Large and robust mechanical squeezing of optomechanical systems in a highly unresolved sideband regime via Duffing nonlinearity and intracavity squeezed light

We propose a scheme to generate strong and robust mechanical squeezing in an optomechanical system in the highly unresolved sideband (HURSB) regime with the help of the Duffing nonlinearity and intracavity squeezed light. The system is formed by a standard optomechanical system with the Duffing nonlinearity (mechanical nonlinearity) and a second-order nonlinear medium (optical nonlinearity). In the resolved sideband regime, the second-order nonlinear medium may play a destructive role in the generation of mechanical squeezing. However, it can significantly increase the mechanical squeezing (larger than 3dB) in the HURSB regime. Finally, we show the mechanical squeezing is robust against thermal fluctuations of the mechanical resonator. The generation of large and robust mechanical squeezing in the HURSB regime is a combined effect of the mechanical and optical nonlinearities.

Large mechanical squeezing beyond 3dB of hybrid atom-optomechanical systems in highly unresolved sideband regime

We propose a scheme for the generation of strong mechanical squeezing beyond 3dB in hybrid atom-optomechanical systems in the highly unresolved sideband (HURSB) regime where the decay rate of cavity is much larger than the frequency of the mechanical oscillator. The system is formed by two two-level atomic ensembles and an optomechanical system with cavity driven by two lasers with different amplitudes. In the HURSB regime, the squeezing of the movable mirror can not be larger than 3dB if no atomic ensemble or only one atomic ensemble is put into the optomechanical system. However, if two atomic ensembles are put into the optomechanical system, the strong mechanical squeezing beyond 3dB is achieved even in the HURSB regime. Our scheme paves the way toward the implementation of strong mechanical squeezing beyond 3dB in hybrid atom-optomechanical systems in experiments.

General corner states in 2D SSH model with intracelluar next-nearest-neighbour hopping

We investigate corner states in a photonic two-dimensional (2D) Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model on a square lattice with zero gauge flux. By considering intracelluar next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) hoppings, we discover a broad class of corner states in the 2D SSH model, and show that they are robust against certain fabrication disorders. Moreover, these corner states are located around the corners, but not at the corner points, so we refer to them as general corner states. We analytically identify that the general corner states are induced by the intracelluar NNN hoppings (long-range interactions) and split off from the edge-state bands. Our work show a simple way to induce unique corner states by the long-range interactions, and offers opportunities for designing novel photonic devices.

Room temperature high-fidelity non-adiabatic holonomic quantum computation on solid-state spins in Nitrogen-Vacancy centers

The high-speed implementation and robustness against of non-adiabatic holonomic quantum computation provide a new idea for overcoming the difficulty of quantum system interacting with the environment easily decoherence, which realizing large-scale quantum computer construction. Here, we show that a high-fidelity quantum gates to implement non-adiabatic holonomic quantum computation under solid-state spin in Nitrogen-Vacancy(NV) centers, providing an extensible experimental platform that has the potential for room-temperature quantum computing, which has increased attention recent years. Compared with the previous method, we can implement both the one and two-qubit gates by varying the amplitude and phase of the microwave pulse applied to control the non-Abelian geometric phase acquired by NV centers. We also find that our proposed scheme may be implemented in the current experiment to discuss the gate fidelity with the experimental parameters. Therefore, the scheme adopts a new method to achieve high-fidelity non-adiabatic holonomic quantum computation.

Enantiomeric excess determination based on nonreciprocal transition induced spectral line elimination

The spontaneous emission spectrum of a multi-level atom or molecule with nonreciprocal transition is investigated. It is shown that the nonreciprocal transition can lead to the elimination of a spectral line in the spontaneous emission spectrum. As an application, we show that nonreciprocal transition arises from the phase-related driving fields in chiral molecules with cyclic three-level transitions, and the elimination of a spectral line induced by nonreciprocal transition provides us a method to determine the enantiomeric excess for the chiral molecules without requiring the enantio-pure samples.

Nonreciprocity via nonlinearity and synthetic magnetism

We propose how to realize nonreciprocity for a weak input optical field via nonlinearity and synthetic magnetism. We show that the photons transmitting from a linear cavity to a nonlinear cavity (i.e., an asymmetric nonlinear optical molecule) exhibit nonreciprocal photon blockade but no clear nonreciprocal transmission. Both nonreciprocal transmission and nonreciprocal photon blockade can be observed, when one or two auxiliary modes are coupled to the asymmetric nonlinear optical molecule to generate an artificial magnetic field. Similar method can be used to create and manipulate nonreciprocal transmission and nonreciprocal photon blockade for photons bi-directionally transport in a symmetric nonlinear optical molecule. Additionally, a photon circulator with nonreciprocal photon blockade is designed based on nonlinearity and synthetic magnetism. The combination of nonlinearity and synthetic magnetism provides us an effective way towards the realization of quantum nonreciprocal devices, e.g., nonreciprocal single-photon sources and single-photon diodes.

Nonreciprocal transition between two nondegenerate energy levels

Stimulated emission and absorption are two fundamental processes of light-matter interaction, and the coefficients of the two processes should be equal in general. However, we will describe a generic method to realize significant difference between the stimulated emission and absorption coefficients of two nondegenerate energy levels, which we refer to as nonreciprocal transition. As a simple implementation, a cyclic three-level atom system, comprising two nondegenerate energy levels and one auxiliary energy level, is employed to show nonreciprocal transition via a combination of synthetic magnetism and reservoir engineering. Moreover, a single-photon nonreciprocal transporter is proposed using two one dimensional semi-infinite coupled-resonator waveguides connected by an atom with nonreciprocal transition effect. Our work opens up a route to design atom-mediated nonreciprocal devices in a wide range of physical systems.

Generation of single entangled photon-phonon pairs via an atom-photon-phonon interaction

Quantum blockade and entanglement play important roles in quantum information and quantum communication as quantum blockade is an effective mechanism to generate single photons (phonons) and entanglement is a crucial resource for quantum information processing. In this work, we propose a method to generate single entangled photon-phonon pairs in a hybrid optomechanical system. We show that photon blockade, phonon blockade, and photon-phonon correlation and entanglement can be observed via the atom-photon-phonon (tripartite) interaction, under the resonant atomic driving. The correlated and entangled single photons and single phonons, i.e., single entangled photon-phonon pairs, can be generated in both the weak and strong tripartite interaction regimes. Our results may have important applications in the development of highly complex quantum networks.

Enhancing quadratic optomechanical coupling via nonlinear medium and lasers

We propose a scheme to significantly increase quadratic optomechanical couplings of optomechanical systems with the help of a nonlinear medium and two driving lasers. The nonlinear medium is driven by one laser and the optical cavity mode is driven by a strong laser. We derive an effective Hamiltonian using squeezing transformation and rotating wave approximation. The effective quadratic optomechanical coupling strength can be larger than the decay rate of the cavity mode by adjusting the two optical driving fields. The thermal noise of squeezed cavity mode can be suppressed totally with the help of a squeezed vacuum field. Then, a driving field is applied to the mechanical mode. We investigate the equal-time second order correlations and find there are photon, phonon, and photon-phonon blockades even the original single-photon quadratic coupling is much smaller than the decay rate of the optical mode. In addition, the sub-Poissonian window of the two-time second order correlations can be controlled by the mechanical driving field. Finally, we show the squeezing and entanglement of the model could be tuned by the driving fields of the nonlinear medium and mechanical mode.

Nonreciprocal photon blockade via quadratic optomechanical coupling

We propose to manipulate the statistic properties of the photons transport nonreciprocally via quadratic optomechanical coupling. We present a scheme to generate quadratic optomechanical interactions in the normal optical modes of a whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) optomechanical system by eliminating the linear optomechanical couplings via anticrossing of different modes. By optically pumping the WGM optomechanical system in one direction, the effective quadratic optomechanical coupling in that direction will be enhanced significantly, and nonreciprocal photon blockade will be observed consequently. Our proposal has potential applications for the on-chip nonreciprocal single-photon devices.

Generalized Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model in one dimensional optomechanical arrays

We propose an implementation of a generalized Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model based on optomechanical arrays. The topological properties of the generalized SSH model depend on the effective optomechanical interactions enhanced by strong driving optical fields. Three phases including one trivial and two distinct topological phases are found in the generalized SSH model. The phase transition can be observed by turning the strengths and phases of the effective optomechanical interactions via adjusting the external driving fields. Moreover, four types of edge states can be created in generalized SSH model of an open chain under single-particle excitation, and the dynamical behaviors of the excitation in the open chain are related to the topological properties under the periodic boundary condition. We show that the edge states can be pumped adiabatically along the optomechanical arrays by periodically modulating the amplitude and frequency of the driving fields. The generalized SSH model based on the optomechanical arrays provides us a tunable platform to engineer topological phases for photons and phonons, which may have potential applications in controlling the transport of photons and phonons.

Cross-correlation between photons and phonons in quadratically coupled optomechanical systems

We study photon, phonon statistics and the cross-correlation between photons and phonons in a quadratically coupled optomechanical system. Photon blockade, phonon blockade and strongly anticorrelated photons and phonons can be observed in the same parameter regime with the effective nonlinear coupling between the optical and mechanical modes, enhanced by a strong optical driving field. Interestingly, an optimal value of the effective nonlinear coupling strength for the photon blockade is not within the strong nonlinear coupling regime. This abnormal phenomenon results from the destructive interference between different paths for two-photon excitation in the optical mode with a moderate effective nonlinear coupling strength. Further more, we show that phonon (photon) pairs and correlated photons and phonons can be generated in the strong nonlinear coupling regime with a proper detuning between the weak mechanical driving field and mechanical mode. Our results open up a way to generate anticorrelated and correlated photons and phonons, which may have important applications in quantum information processing.

Nonreciprocal single-photon frequency converter via multiple semi-infinite coupled-resonator waveguides

We propose to construct a nonreciprocal single-photon frequency converter via multiple semi-infinite coupled-resonator waveguides (CRWs). We first demonstrate that the frequency of a single photon can be converted nonreciprocally through two CRWs, which are coupled indirectly by optomechanical interactions with two nondegenerate mechanical modes. Based on such nonreciprocity, two different single-photon circulators are proposed in the T-shaped waveguides consisting of three semi-infinite CRWs, which are coupled in pairwise by optomechanical interactions. One circulator is proposed by using two nondegenerate mechanical modes and the other one is proposed by using three nondegenerate mechanical modes. Nonreciprocal single-photon frequency conversion is induced by breaking the time-reversal symmetry, and the optimal conditions for nonreciprocal frequency conversion are obtained. These proposals can be used to realize nonreciprocal frequency conversion of single photons in any two distinctive waveguides with different frequencies and they can allow for dynamic control of the direction of frequency conversion by tuning the phases of external driving lasers, which may have versatile applications in hybrid quantum networks.

Phononic Josephson oscillation and self-trapping with two-phonon exchange interaction

We propose a bosonic Josephson junction (BJJ) in two nonlinear mechanical resonator coupled through two-phonon exchange interaction induced by quadratic optomechanical couplings. The nonlinear dynamic equations and effective Hamiltonian are derived to describe behaviors of the BJJ. We show that the BJJ can work in two different dynamical regimes: Josephson oscillation and macroscopic self-trapping. The system can transfer from one regime to the other one when the self-interaction and asymmetric parameters exceed their critical values. We predict that a transition from Josephson oscillation to macroscopic self-trapping can be induced by the phonon damping in the asymmetric BJJs. Our results opens up a way to demonstrate BJJ with two-phonon exchange interaction and can be applied to other systems, such as the optical and microwave systems.

Single-photon nonreciprocal transport in one-dimensional coupled-resonator waveguides

We study the transport of a single photon in two coupled one-dimensional semi-infinite coupled-resonator waveguides (CRWs), in which both end sides are coupled to a dissipative cavity. We demonstrate that a single photon can transfer from one semi-infinite CRW to the other nonreciprocally. Based on such nonreciprocity, we further construct a three-port single-photon circulator by a T-shaped waveguide, in which three semi-infinite CRWs are pairwise mutually coupled to each other. The single-photon nonreciprocal transport is induced by the breaking of the time-reversal symmetry and the optimal conditions for these phenomena are obtained analytically. The CRWs with broken time-reversal symmetry will open up a kind of quantum devices with versatile applications in quantum networks.

Phonon blockade in a nanomechanical resonator resonantly coupled to a qubit

We study phonon statistics in a nanomechanical resonator (NAMR) which is resonantly coupled to a qubit. We find that there are two different mechanisms for phonon blockade in such a resonantly coupled NAMR-qubit system. One is due to the strong anharmonicity of the NAMR-qubit system with large coupling strength; the other one is due to the destructive interference between different paths for two-phonon excitation in the NAMR-qubit system with a moderate coupling strength. We find that the phonon blockade is fragile towards thermal mode occupations and can only be observed for NAMR being at ultracold effective temperature. In order to enlarge the mean phonon number for strong phonon antibunching with a moderate NAMR-qubit coupling strength, we assume that two external driving fields are applied to the NAMR and qubit, respectively. In this case, we find that the phonon blockades under two mechanisms can appear at the same frequency regime by optimizing the strength ratio and phase difference of the two external driving fields.

Nonreciprocal conversion between microwave and optical photons in electro-optomechanical systems

We propose to demonstrate nonreciprocal conversion between microwave and optical photons in an electro-optomechanical system where a microwave mode and an optical mode are coupled indirectly via two non-degenerate mechanical modes. The nonreciprocal conversion is obtained in the broken time-reversal symmetry regime, where the conversion of photons from one frequency to the other is enhanced for constructive quantum interference while the conversion in the reversal direction is suppressed due to destructive quantum interference. It is interesting that the nonreciprocal response between the microwave and optical modes in the electro-optomechanical system appears at two different frequencies with opposite directions. The proposal can be used to realize nonreciprocal conversion between photons of any two distinctive modes with different frequencies. Moreover, the electro-optomechanical system can also be used to construct a three-port circulator for three optical modes with distinctively different frequencies by adding an auxiliary optical mode coupled to one of the mechanical modes.

Thermal effects on bipartite and multipartite correlations in fiber coupled cavity arrays

We investigate the thermal influence of fibers on the dynamics of bipartite and multipartite correlations in fiber coupled cavity arrays where each cavity is resonantly coupled to a two-level atom. The atom-cavity systems connected by fibers can be considered as polaritonic qubits. We first derive a master equation to describe the evolution of the atom-cavity systems. The bipartite (multipartite) correlations is measured by concurrence and discord (spin squeezing). Then, we solve the master equation numerically and study the thermal effects on the concurrence, discord, and spin squeezing of qubits. On the one hand, at zero temperature, there are steady-state bipartite and multipartite correlations. One the other hand, the thermal fluctuations of a fiber may blockade the generation of entanglement of two qubits connected directly by the fiber while the discord can be generated and stored for a long time. This thermal-induced blockade effects of bipartite correlations may be useful for quantum information processing. The bipartite correlations of a longer chain of qubits is more robust than a shorter one in the presence of thermal fluctuations.
