Convergence Analysis of a Fully Discrete Observer For Data Assimilation of the Barotropic Euler Equations

We study the convergence of a discrete Luenberger observer for the barotropic Euler equations in one dimension, for measurements of the velocity only. We use a mixed finite element method in space and implicit Euler integration in time. We use a modified relative energy technique to show an error bound comparing the discrete observer to the original system's solution. The bound is the sum of three parts: an exponentially decaying part, proportional to the difference in initial value, a part proportional to the grid sizes in space and time and a part that is proportional to the size of the measurement errors as well as the nudging parameter. The proportionality constants of the second and third parts are independent of time and grid sizes. To the best of our knowledge, this provides the first error estimate for a discrete observer for a quasilinear hyperbolic system, and implies uniform-in-time accuracy of the discrete observer for long-time simulations.

Improving Weak PINNs for Hyperbolic Conservation Laws: Dual Norm Computation, Boundary Conditions and Systems

We consider the approximation of entropy solutions of nonlinear hyperbolic conservation laws using neural networks. We provide explicit computations that highlight why classical PINNs will not work for discontinuous solutions to nonlinear hyperbolic conservation laws and show that weak (dual) norms of the PDE residual should be used in the loss functional. This approach has been termed "weak PINNs" recently. We suggest some modifications to weak PINNs that make their training easier, which leads to smaller errors with less training, as shown by numerical experiments. Additionally, we extend wPINNs to scalar conservation laws with weak boundary data and to systems of hyperbolic conservation laws. We perform numerical experiments in order to assess the accuracy and efficiency of the extended method.

Step scaling with gradient flow and finite temperature

We combine gradient flow, step-scaling, and finite-temperature boundary conditions to scale-set 2+1+1 flavor QCD lattices with physical HISQ quarks at multiple spacings down to a=0.01378 fm, such that they represent the same temperature at the percent level and the same quark mass to a few percent. This preparatory work will allow the evaluation and continuum extrapolation of the topological susceptibility at up to 1 GeV temperatures with good control over quark-mass effects.

Misalignment vs Topology in Axion-Like Models

Cosmological axions, an important dark matter candidate, are generated when a scalar field with a spontaneously broken O(2) invariance develops an explicitly O(2)-breaking tilt cosmologically, leading to coherent production of long-wavelength modes which could be dark matter. It appears that the production efficiency of this mechanism is low, despite possible production from topological structures. To understand this better, we examine production in O(N) generalizations. In particular we highlight the importance of how fast the explicit O(N)-breaking potential turns on.
