Energy-Efficient GPU DVFS for Fine-Tuning of SLMs on Resource-constrained Embedded Devices

Dynamic Voltage Frequency Scaling (DVFS) on resource-constrained embedded GPU platforms is essential for energy-efficient small language model (SLM) fine-tuning, as privacy- and personalization-driven adaptation increasingly requires local execution and involves repeated forward-backward optimization over many mini-batches, making it substantially more time- and energy-intensive than single-pass inference. To this end, 1) we first characterize the fine-tuning behavior of representative encoder-only SLMs of BERT variants, and autoregressive decoder-only SLMs of Pythia variants on GLUE benchmarks. In addition to the characterizations, 2) we propose a simple yet effective ML-based model selection that selects energy-optimal GPU DVFS settings on resource-constrained embedded platforms. Our results on NVIDIA Jetson AGX Orin demonstrate average 13.11% energy savings (up to 26.73%) over MAXN Mode 0, which has no explicit power cap.

CNN and ViT Efficiency Study on Tiny ImageNet and DermaMNIST Datasets

This study evaluates the trade-offs between convolutional and transformer-based architectures on both medical and general-purpose image classification benchmarks. We use ResNet-18 as our baseline and introduce a fine-tuning strategy applied to four Vision Transformer variants (Tiny, Small, Base, Large) on DermatologyMNIST and TinyImageNet. Our goal is to reduce inference latency and model complexity with acceptable accuracy degradation. Through systematic hyperparameter variations, we demonstrate that appropriately fine-tuned Vision Transformers can match or exceed the baseline's performance, achieve faster inference, and operate with fewer parameters, highlighting their viability for deployment in resource-constrained environments.

AI Generated Text Detection

The rapid development of large language models has led to an increase in AI-generated text, with students increasingly using LLM-generated content as their own work, which violates academic integrity. This paper presents an evaluation of AI text detection methods, including both traditional machine learning models and transformer-based architectures. We utilize two datasets, HC3 and DAIGT v2, to build a unified benchmark and apply a topic-based data split to prevent information leakage. This approach ensures robust generalization across unseen domains. Our experiments show that TF-IDF logistic regression achieves a reasonable baseline accuracy of 82.87%. However, deep learning models outperform it. The BiLSTM classifier achieves an accuracy of 88.86%, while DistilBERT achieves a similar accuracy of 88.11% with the highest ROC-AUC score of 0.96, demonstrating the strongest overall performance. The results indicate that contextual semantic modeling is significantly superior to lexical features and highlight the importance of mitigating topic memorization through appropriate evaluation protocols. The limitations of this work are primarily related to dataset diversity and computational constraints. In future work, we plan to expand dataset diversity and utilize parameter-efficient fine-tuning methods such as LoRA. We also plan to explore smaller or distilled models and employ more efficient batching strategies and hardware-aware optimization.

Congenital Heart Disease recognition using Deep Learning/Transformer models

Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) remains a leading cause of infant morbidity and mortality, yet non-invasive screening methods often yield false negatives. Deep learning models, with their ability to automatically extract features, can assist doctors in detecting CHD more effectively. In this work, we investigate the use of dual-modality (sound and image) deep learning methods for CHD diagnosis. We achieve 73.9% accuracy on the ZCHSound dataset and 80.72% accuracy on the DICOM Chest X-ray dataset.
