Decay of Color Gauge Fields in Heavy Ion Collisions and Nielsen-Olesen Instability

We analyze the behavior of unstable modes in the glasma produced in high energy heavy ion collisions, using a simple model with effective homogeneous longitudinal color electric and magnetic fields. The unstable modes are approximately described as Nielsen-Olesen unstable modes under the homogeneous longitudinal gauge fields. We find that the Nielsen-Olesen unstable modes show properties very similar to those of the exponentially increasing unstable modes in the glasma recently shown by Romatschke and Venugopalan. Although initial gauge fields in the glasma are much stronger than the ones in our model, they decay with the production of the Nielsen-Olesen unstable modes. We discuss why we can reproduce the features of the glasma by using the effective homogeneous weak magnetic fields. Our analysis supports an idea that the decay of the gauge fields in the glasma is caused by Nielsen-Olesen instability.

Thermalization of Color Gauge Fields in High Energy Heavy Ion Collisions

We discuss quantum mechanical decay of color magnetic field generated initially at high energy heavy ion collisions. It is caused by Nielsen-Olesen unstable modes and is accomplished possibly in a period $<1$fm/c. We show that the decay products, i.e. incoherent gluons may be thermalized in a sufficiently short period ($< 1$fm/c). The precise determination of the period is made by calculating two point function of the color magnetic field in a model of color glass condensate.

Two Dimensional Quantum Well of Gluons in Color Ferromagnetic Quark Matter

We have recently pointed out that color magnetic field is generated in dense quark matter, i.e. color ferromagnetic phase of quark matter. Using light cone quantization, we show that gluons occupying the lowest Landau level under the color magnetic field effectively form a two dimensional quantum well (layer), in which infinitely many zero modes of the gluons are present. We discuss that the zero modes of the gluons form a quantum Hall state by interacting repulsively with each other, just as electrons do in semiconductors. Such a ferromagnetic quark matter with the layer structure of the gluons is a possible origin of extremely strong magnetic field observed in magnetars.

Light Cone Quantization and Savvidy Instability in Dense Quark Matter

Solving instability of Savvidy vacuum in QCD is a longstanding problem. Using light cone quantization we analyze the problem not in the real confining vacuum but in dense quark matter where gluons interact weakly with each other. We find a stable ferromagnetic ground state of gluons which carry a single longitudinal momentum. Their states are composed as if they are confined in a two dimensional quantum well. This supports our previous result that gluons form a quantum Hall state in dense quark matter.

Spontaneous Breakdown of U(1) symmetry in DLCQ without Zero Mode

We show that the spontaneous breakdown of U(1) symmetry in a Higgs model can be described in discretized light cone formulation even by neglecting zero mode. We obtain correctly the energy of a ground state with the symmetry breakdown. We also show explicitly the presence of a Goldstone mode and its absence when the U(1) symmetry is gauged. In spite of obtaining the favorable results, we lose a merit in the formulation without zero modes that a naive Fock vacuum is the true ground state.

Color Glass Condensates in dense quark matter and quantum Hall states of gluons

We apply the effective theory of color glass condensate to the analysis of gluon states in dense quark matter, in which the saturation region of gluons is also present. We find that in the region two point function of gluons shows algebraic long range order. The order is completely the same as the one gluons show in the dense quark matter, which form quantum Hall states. The order leads to the vanishing of massless gluon pole. We also find that the saturation region of gluons extends from small $x$ to even large $x\lesssim 1$ in much dense quark matter. We point out a universality that the color glass condensate is a property of hadrons at high energy and of quark matter at high baryon density.

Color Ferromagnetic Quark Matter in Neutron Stars

We show that color ferromagnetic phase of quark matter is energetically more favored than color superconducting phases in neutron stars. Namely, increasing baryon density in neutron stars transforms nuclear matter into the quark matter of the color ferromagnetic phase. Further increase of the density makes the quark matter take the color superconducting phases. We find that a critical mass of the neutron star with such an internal structure is about $1.6M_{\odot}$. We stress that analysis of gluon dynamics is crucial for exploring dense quark matter.

Color Ferromagnetism of Quark Matter ; a Possible Origin of Strong Magnetic Field in Magnetars

We show a possibility that strong ``magnetic field'' $\sim 10^{15} $G is produced by color ferromagnetic quark matter in neutron stars. In the quark matter a color magnetic field is generated spontaneously owing to Savvidy mechanism and a gluon condensate arises for the stabilization of the field. Since the quark matter is electrically charged in the neutron stars, the rotation of the quarks around the color magnetic field produces the strong ``magnetic field''.

Quantum Hall States of Gluons in Quark Matter

We have recently shown that dense quark matter possesses a color ferromagnetic phase in which a stable color magnetic field arises spontaneously. This ferromagnetic state has been known to be Savvidy vacuum in the vacuum sector. Although the Savvidy vacuum is unstable, the state is stabilized in the quark matter. The stabilization is achieved by the formation of quantum Hall states of gluons, that is, by the condensation of the gluon's color charges transmitted from the quark matter. The phase is realized between the hadronic phase and the color superconducting phase. After a review of quantum Hall states of electrons in semiconductors, we discuss the properties of quantum Hall states of gluons in quark matter in detail. Especially, we evaluate the energy of the states as a function of the coupling constant. We also analyze solutions of vortex excitations in the states and evaluate their energies. We find that the states become unstable as the gauge coupling constant becomes large, or the chemical potential of the quarks becomes small, as expected. On the other hand, with the increase of the chemical potential, the color superconducting state arises instead of the ferromagnetic state. We also show that the quark matter produced by heavy ion collisions generates observable strong magnetic field $\sim 10^{15}$ Gauss when it enters the ferromagnetic phase.

Color Ferromagnetism in Quark Matter

We show a possibility that there exists a color ferromagnetic state in quark matter, in which a color magnetic field is spontaneously generated. The state arises between the hadronic state and the color superconducting state when the density of quarks is varied.Although the state (Savvidy state) has been known to involve unstablemodes of gluons, we show that the modes compose a quantum Hall state to stabilize the ferromagnetic state. Such a quantum Hall statecan arise only when quarks matter is present. We also show that the order of the phase transition between the state andthe quark gluon plasma is of the first order.

Vortex Excitations in $α$ Cluster Condensed Nuclei

We point out an intriguing possibility that there exist topological soliton-like excitations in nuclei with $α$ cluster condensation. The excitations are vortices in superfluid, a property possessed by such Bose condensed nuclei. We show that the vortex-like states possess quantum numbers $J^{P}=n^{(-1)^n}$ and energies $\sim $ several MeV, measured from the ground state energies of the $n α$ condensed states. We point out actual candidates, for instance, $2^{+}(3 {MeV})$ for $^{8}$Be, $3^{-}(9.6 {MeV})$ for $^{12}$C, etc, although the topological nature as a vortex is obscure in such light nuclei.

PseudoSkyrmion Effects on Tunneling Conductivity in Coherent Bilayer Quantum Hall States at $ν=1$

We present a mechamism why interlayer tunneling conductivity in coherent bilayer quantum Hall states at $ν=1$ is anomalously large, but finite in the recent experiment. According to the mechanism, pseudoSkyrmions causes the finite conductivity, although there exists an expectation that dissipationless tunneling current arises in the state. PseudoSkyrmions have an intrinsic polarization field perpendicular to the layers, which causes the dissipation. Using the mechanism we show that the large peak in the conductivity remains for weak parallel magnetic field, but decay rapidly after its strength is beyond a critical one, $\sim 0.1$ Tesla.

Skyrmion $\leftrightarrow$ pseudoSkyrmion Transition in Bilayer Quantum Hall States at $ν=1$

Bilayer quantum Hall states at $ν=1$ have been demonstrated to possess a distinguished state with interlayer phase coherence. The state has both excitations of Skyrmion with spin and pseudoSkyrmion with pseudospin. We show that Skyrmion $\leftrightarrow$ pseudoSkyrmion transition arises in the state by changing imbalance between electron densities in both layers; PseudoSkyrmion is realized at balance point, while Skyrmion is realized at large imbalance. The transition can be seen by observing the dependence of activation energies on magnetic field parallel to the layers.

Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays and Gamma Ray Bursts from Axion Stars

We propose a model in which ultra high energy cosmic rays and gamma ray bursts are produced by collisions between neutron stars and axion stars. The acceleration of such a cosmic ray is made by the electric field, $\sim 10^{15} (B/10^{12} {G}) {eV} {cm}^{-1}$, which is induced in an axion star by relatively strong magnetic field $B>10^{12}$ G of a neutron star. On the other hand, similar collisions generate gamma ray bursts when magnetic field is relatively small, e.g. $\leq 10^{10}$ G. Assuming that the axion mass is $\sim 10^{-9}$ eV, we can explain huge energies of the gamma ray bursts $\sim 10^{54}$ erg as well as the ultra high energies of the cosmic rays $\sim 10^{20}$ eV. We estimate rate of energy release in the collisions and we find that the rate roughly agrees with observations. In addition, we show that these axion stars are plausible candidates for MACHOs. Since the axion star induces oscillating electric current under the magnetic field, observable monochromatic radiations are emitted.

Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays from Axion Stars

We propose a model in which ultra high energy cosmic rays are produced by collisions between neutron stars and axion stars. The acceleration of such a cosmic ray is made by the electric field, $\sim 10^{15} (B/10^{12} {G}) {eV} {cm}^{-1}$, which is induced in an axion star by the strong magnetic field $B>10^{12}$ G of a neutron star. As we have shown previously, similar collisions generate gamma ray bursts when the magnetic field is much smaller, e.g. $\sim 10^{10}$ G. If we assume that the axion mass is $\sim 10^{-9}$ eV, we can explain huge energies of the gamma ray bursts $\sim 10^{54}$ erg as well as the ultra high energies of the cosmic rays $\sim 10^{20}$ eV. In addition, it turns out that these axion stars are plausible candidates for MACHOs. We point out a possibility of observing monochromatic radiations emitted from the axion stars.

Emission of Radio Waves in Gamma Ray Bursts and Axionic Boson Stars

We point out that the bursts of photons with the energy of the axion mass may appear coincidentally with gamma ray bursts if the gamma ray bursts are caused by collisions between neutron stars and axionic boson stars. In this mechanism, jets are formed in the collisions with large Lorentz factors $\geq 10^2$. We explain qualitatively time-dependent complex structures of gamma ray bursts as well as the large energy problem. Therefore, with detection of the monochromatic photons we can test the model and determine the axion mass.

X Rays from Old Neutron Stars Heated by Axion Stars

We show that axionic boson stars collide with isolated old neutron stars with strong magnetic field ($>10^8$ Gauss) and causes the neutron stars to radiate X ray by heating them. Surface temperatures of such neutron stars becomes$10^5 K \sim 10^6 K$. We suggest that these are possible candidates for X ray sources observed in ROSAT Survey. We discuss a possible way of identifying such neutron stars. We also point out that the collision generates a burst of monochromatic radiations with frequency given by axion mass.

A Possible Origin of Gamma Ray Bursts and Axionic Boson Stars

We indicate a possible mechanism of generating gamma ray bursts. They are generated by a collision between an axionic boson star and a neutron star. The axionic boson star can dissipates its whole energy $10^{50}$ erg in the magnetized conducting medium of the neutron star. This dissipation arises only around envelope of the neutron star so that a fire ball with small baryon contamination is expected. We have evaluated roughly a rate of the collision per year and per galaxy which is consistent with observations, under plausible assumptions. We also point out that cosmic rays with extremely high energy, $10^{21}$eV, can be produced in the similar collisions with the neutron stars with strong magnetic fields $\sim 10^{14}$G.
