Intelligent Reflecting Surface Deployment for Low-Altitude Coverage: Illumination Geometry, Directional Characteristics, and Optimization

Terrestrial base stations (BSs) are typically configured with fixed downtilt to serve ground users, resulting in weak illumination of low-altitude airspace even under line-of-sight (LoS) propagation. In this paper, we establish a channel model that incorporates BS and intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) radiation patterns for three-dimensional (3D) low-altitude coverage while preserving the existing BS configuration. We formulate a budget-constrained IRS deployment problem that jointly determines candidate-site selection, IRS orientations, and phase shifts to maximize the worst-case signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) over the 3D low-altitude airspace. The selected sites and optimized IRS parameters remain fixed after deployment, yielding a quasi-static IRS configuration. We characterize the illumination geometry between the fixed-downtilt BS and rooftop candidates by deriving the nonnegative installation-height range satisfying the BS main-lobe condition. The separation between the mapped main-lobe height boundaries grows linearly with horizontal BS-to-site distance and decreases inversely with the number of BS antennas. We further derive an analytical lower bound on the regional worst-case normalized array gain achievable through IRS phase design over served directions with different direction spans. The resulting sufficient direction span decreases inversely with the square root of the number of IRS elements when the same worst-case normalized gain guarantee is maintained. We develop a mixed-integer alternating optimization (AO) algorithm to solve the resulting problem. Simulation results validate the analytical characterizations and show that the proposed scheme achieves higher worst-case SNR than benchmarks across different deployment budgets.

Sparse Rotatable Arrays (SRA): Unifying Array Aperture and Antenna Directivity for Wireless Communications

Sparse rotatable array (SRA) is a novel reconfigurable antenna architecture that jointly exploits sparse aperture configuration and antenna directivity to enhance spatial resolution for future wireless communications. Specifically, SRA activates a subset of rotatable antennas over a large candidate aperture and adjusts their boresight directions, thereby creating a directionally selective sparse aperture with reduced hardware requirements and enhanced spatial flexibility. In this paper, we investigate an SRA-aided multi-group communication system, where users are organized into spatial groups with different service requirements. We develop a group-aware SRA design framework by jointly optimizing the sparse-aperture allocation, RA orientations, and transmit beamforming to maximize the weighted max-min signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR). Then, we characterize the operating principles of SRA and reveal that sparse aperture improves spatial resolution by enlarging the effective array aperture, while antenna directivity suppresses inter-group coupling through directional control, thereby enabling simplified group-wise beamforming structures. Guided by these insights, we develop a structured low-complexity alternating optimization algorithm that embeds a closed-form projected group-center RA orientation rule into the sparse-aperture allocation and beamforming design. The proposed algorithm combines analysis-guided initialization, sampled multi-start antenna-allocation search, and bisection-based second-order cone programming for beamforming. Numerical results show that the proposed SRA design closely approaches fully-shared SRA benchmarks and significantly outperforms compact subarray and omni sparse-array schemes.

Multi-User MIMO with Rotatable Antennas and IRS: Joint Antenna Boresight and IRS Orientation Design

In this paper, we investigate an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted multi-user system, where the base station (BS) employs rotatable antennas (RAs) and the IRS can adjust the panel orientation. To alleviate the severe multiplicative path loss of the cascaded channel, the IRS is deployed near the BS, while the user-BS and user-IRS links remain in the far field. We formulate a sum-rate maximization problem by jointly optimizing the receive beamforming, IRS phase shifts, BS antenna boresights, and IRS panel orientation. To tackle the resulting highly coupled and non-convex problem, we first study a single-user case to reveal the structure of the dual-rotation gain, which is shown to be multiplicatively separable in the far field but coupled in the near field. For the general multi-user case, we develop an alternating optimization algorithm, where the receive beamforming is updated in closed form, the IRS phase shifts are optimized by an FP-assisted Riemannian conjugate gradient method, and the BS antenna boresights and IRS panel orientation are updated via projected gradient methods. Simulation results demonstrate the significant sum-rate gains achieved by the proposed coordinated rotation design over fixed-orientation and single-rotation benchmark schemes, and provide useful insights into near-field dual-rotation design.

Joint Transmit and Receive Antenna Orientation Design for Secure MIMO Communications

Physical layer security (PLS) is a promising paradigm for safeguarding 6G wireless networks by exploiting the inherent characteristics of wireless channels. However, the efficiency of conventional PLS is often limited by fixed orientation antennas. This paper investigates a rotatable antenna (RA)-aided secure multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication system, where both the transmitter and the receiver are equipped with RAs in the presence of an eavesdropper. By dynamically optimizing the orientations of RAs, we can proactively reshape the effective MIMO channels to enhance legitimate transmission while simultaneously suppressing information leakage to the eavesdropper. We formulate a secrecy rate maximization problem by jointly optimizing the transmit beamforming, artificial noise (AN) covariance matrix, and the transmit/receive RA orientations, subject to the transmit power budget and antenna orientation constraints. To tackle the resulting highly coupled and non-convex problem, we first study a simplified single-input single-output (SISO) case to reveal the structure of the optimal RA orientation. For the general MIMO case, we develop an alternating optimization algorithm by reformulating the original problem through the minimum mean-square error framework. In particular, the transmit beamforming and AN covariance matrix are derived in semi-closed forms, while the RA orientations are updated via the Riemannian Frank-Wolfe method. The proposed design is further extended to the multi-receiver secure transmission scenario. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme converges rapidly and achieves significant secrecy rate gains over the conventional fixed-orientation scheme.

Wireless Communication with Cross-Linked Rotatable Antenna Array: Architecture Design and Rotation Optimization

Rotatable antenna (RA) technology can harness additional spatial degrees of freedom by enabling the dynamic three-dimensional orientation control of each antenna. Unfortunately, the hardware cost and control complexity of traditional RA systems is proportional to the number of RAs. To address the issue, we consider a cross-linked (CL) RA structure, which enables the coordinated rotation of multiple antennas, thereby offering a cost-effective solution. To evaluate the performance of the CL-RA array, we investigate a CL-RA-aided uplink system. Specifically, we first establish system models for both antenna element-level and antenna panel-level rotation. Then, we formulate a sum rate maximization problem by jointly optimizing the receive beamforming at the base station and the rotation angles. For the antenna element-level rotation, we derive the optimal solution of the CL-RA array under the single-user case. Subsequently, for two rotation schemes, we propose an alternating optimization algorithm to solve the formulated problem in the multi-user case, where the receive beamforming and the antenna rotation angles are obtained by applying the minimum mean square error method and feasible direction method, respectively. In addition, considering the hardware limitations, we apply the genetic algorithm to address the discrete rotation angles selection problem. Simulation results show that by carefully designing the row-column partition scheme, the performance of the CL-RA architecture is quite close to that of the flexible antenna orientation scheme. Moreover, the CL antenna element-level scheme surpasses the CL antenna panel-level scheme by 25% and delivers a 128% performance improvement over conventional fixed-direction antennas.

Channel Estimation and Beamforming Design for MF-RIS-Aided Communication Systems

In this letter, we study the beamforming design for channel estimation of multi-functional reconfigurable intelligent surface (MF-RIS)-aided multi-user communications that supports simultaneous signal reflection, refraction, and amplification. A least square (LS) based channel estimator is proposed for MF-RIS by considering both the coupled MF-RIS beams and the introduced thermal noise. With the discrete fourier transform (DFT)-matrix, the MF-RIS beamforming design problem is simplified under the proposed LS channel estimator. The optimal MF-RIS beamforming design that achieves the Cram\'er-Rao lower bound (CRLB) of channel estimator is obtained with the proposed alternating optimization algorithm. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed beamforming design in reducing the impact of thermal noise.

Energy-Efficient Robust Beamforming for Multi-Functional RIS-Aided Wireless Communication under Imperfect CSI

The robust beamforming design in multi-functional reconfigurable intelligent surface (MF-RIS) assisted wireless networks is investigated in this work, where the MF-RIS supports signal reflection, refraction, and amplification to address the double-fading attenuation and half-space coverage issues faced by traditional RISs. Specifically, we aim to maximize the system energy efficiency by jointly optimizing the transmit beamforming vector and MF-RIS coefficients in the case of imperfect channel state information (CSI). We first leverage the S-procedure and Bernstein-Type Inequality approaches to transform the formulated problem into tractable forms in the bounded and statistical CSI error cases, respectively. Then, we optimize the MF-RIS coefficients and the transmit beamforming vector alternately by adopting an alternating optimization framework, under the quality of service constraint for the bounded CSI error model and the rate outage probability constraint for the statistical CSI error model. Simulation results demonstrate the significant performance improvement of MF-RIS compared to benchmark schemes. In addition, it is revealed that the cumulative CSI error caused by increasing the number of RIS elements is larger than that caused by increasing the number of transmit antennas.

Multi-Functional RIS Integrated Sensing and Communications for 6G Networks

In this paper, we propose a novel multi-functional reconfigurable intelligent surface (MF-RIS) that supports signal reflection, refraction, amplification, and target sensing simultaneously. Our MF-RIS aims to enhance integrated communication and sensing (ISAC) systems, particularly in multi-user and multi-target scenarios. Equipped with reflection and refraction components (i.e., amplifiers and phase shifters), MF-RIS is able to adjust the amplitude and phase shift of both communication and sensing signals on demand. Additionally, with the assistance of sensing elements, MF-RIS is capable of capturing the echo signals from multiple targets, thereby mitigating the signal attenuation typically associated with multi-hop links. We propose a MF-RIS-enabled multi-user and multi-target ISAC system, and formulate an optimization problem to maximize the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) of sensing targets. This problem involves jointly optimizing the transmit beamforming and MF-RIS configurations, subject to constraints on the communication rate, total power budget, and MF-RIS coefficients. We decompose the formulated non-convex problem into three sub-problems, and then solve them via an efficient iterative algorithm. Simulation results demonstrate that: 1) The performance of MF-RIS varies under different operating protocols, and energy splitting (ES) exhibits the best performance in the considered MF-RIS-enabled multi-user multi-target ISAC system; 2) Under the same total power budget, the proposed MF-RIS with ES protocol attains 52.2%, 73.5% and 60.86% sensing SINR gains over active RIS, passive RIS, and simultaneously transmitting and reflecting RIS (STAR-RIS), respectively; 3) The number of sensing elements will no longer improve sensing performance after exceeding a certain number.

Enhancing NOMA Networks via Reconfigurable Multi-Functional Surface

By flexibly manipulating the radio propagation environment, reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a promising technique for future wireless communications. However, the single-side coverage and double-fading attenuation faced by conventional RISs largely restrict their applications. To address this issue, we propose a novel concept of multi-functional RIS (MF-RIS), which provides reflection, transmission, and amplification simultaneously for the incident signal. With the aim of enhancing the performance of a non-orthogonal multiple-access (NOMA) downlink multiuser network, we deploy an MF-RIS to maximize the sum rate by jointly optimizing the active beamforming and MF-RIS coefficients. Then, an alternating optimization algorithm is proposed to solve the formulated non-convex problem by exploiting successive convex approximation and penalty-based method. Numerical results show that the proposed MF-RIS outperforms conventional RISs under different settings.
