Maturing Markov Decision Processes: Decision Making under Increasing Information and Shrinking Action Sets

Sequential decision problems often exhibit an asymmetric evolution of information and decision flexibility: as a decision cycle unfolds, the agent receives richer information while feasible actions expire due to operational cutoffs, commitments, or resource constraints. Standard MDP formulations typically flatten this structure into stage-dependent state descriptions and action masks, thereby obscuring the nested information--action asymmetry that determines which decisions are urgent and which can be deferred. We introduce Maturing Markov Decision Processes (MMDPs), a formulation built around this information--action asymmetry. We characterize one of its key consequences through an expiring-action priority principle, which identifies the actions that must be resolved before the next stage. Motivated by this structure, we develop a structure-aware reinforcement learning framework with stage-aware policy design, expiring-action abstraction, and search-augmented learning with distillation. Experiments on a controlled multi-supplier replenishment problem, simplified cash-management environments of increasing complexity, and a production-scale simulator show that explicitly modeling this asymmetry improves learning efficiency and becomes increasingly valuable as decision problems scale.

STDec: Spatio-Temporal Stability Guided Decoding for dLLMs

Diffusion Large Language Models (dLLMs) have achieved rapid progress, viewed as a promising alternative to the autoregressive paradigm. However, most dLLM decoders still adopt a global confidence threshold, and do not explicitly model local context from neighboring decoded states or temporal consistency of predicted token IDs across steps. To address this issue, we propose a simple spatio-temporal stability guided decoding approach, named STDec. We observe strong spatio-temporal stability in dLLM decoding: newly decoded tokens tend to lie near decoded neighbors, and their predicted IDs often remain consistent across several denoising steps. Inspired by this stability, our STDec includes spatial-aware decoding and temporal-aware decoding. The spatial-aware decoding dynamically generates the token-adaptive threshold by aggregating the decoded states of nearby tokens. The temporal-aware decoding relaxes the decoding thresholds for tokens whose predicted token IDs remain consistent over denoising steps. Our STDec is training-free and remains compatible with cache-based acceleration methods. Across textual reasoning and multimodal understanding benchmarks, STDec substantially improves throughput while maintaining comparable task performance score. Notably, on MBPP with LLaDA, STDec achieves up to 14.17x speedup with a comparable score. Homepage: https://yzchen02.github.io/STDec.

A Multi-Strategy Framework for Enhancing Shatian Pomelo Detection in Real-World Orchards

Shatian pomelo detection in orchards is essential for yield estimation and lean production, but models tuned to ideal datasets often degrade in practice due to device-dependent tone shifts, illumination changes, large scale variation, and frequent occlusion. We introduce STP-AgriData, a multi-scenario dataset combining real-orchard imagery with curated web images, and apply contrast/brightness augmentations to emulate unstable lighting. To better address scale and occlusion, we propose REAS-Det, featuring Global-Selective Visibility Convolution (GSV-Conv) that expands the visible feature space under global semantic guidance while retaining efficient spatial aggregation, plus C3RFEM, MultiSEAM, and Soft-NMS for refined separation and localization. On STP-AgriData, REAS-Det achieves 86.5% precision, 77.2% recall, 84.3% mAP@0.50, and 53.6% mAP@0.50:0.95, outperforming recent detectors and improving robustness in real orchard environments. The source code is available at: https://github.com/Genk641/REAS-Det.

SDE-DET: A Precision Network for Shatian Pomelo Detection in Complex Orchard Environments

Pomelo detection is an essential process for their localization, automated robotic harvesting, and maturity analysis. However, detecting Shatian pomelo in complex orchard environments poses significant challenges, including multi-scale issues, obstructions from trunks and leaves, small object detection, etc. To address these issues, this study constructs a custom dataset STP-AgriData and proposes the SDE-DET model for Shatian pomelo detection. SDE-DET first utilizes the Star Block to effectively acquire high-dimensional information without increasing the computational overhead. Furthermore, the presented model adopts Deformable Attention in its backbone, to enhance its ability to detect pomelos under occluded conditions. Finally, multiple Efficient Multi-Scale Attention mechanisms are integrated into our model to reduce the computational overhead and extract deep visual representations, thereby improving the capacity for small object detection. In the experiment, we compared SDE-DET with the Yolo series and other mainstream detection models in Shatian pomelo detection. The presented SDE-DET model achieved scores of 0.883, 0.771, 0.838, 0.497, and 0.823 in Precision, Recall, mAP@0.5, mAP@0.5:0.95 and F1-score, respectively. SDE-DET has achieved state-of-the-art performance on the STP-AgriData dataset. Experiments indicate that the SDE-DET provides a reliable method for Shatian pomelo detection, laying the foundation for the further development of automatic harvest robots.

Photonic quasicrystal of spin angular momentum

Quasicrystals, characterized by long-range order without translational symmetry, have catalyzed transformative advances in various fields, including optics in terms of field quasicrystals. Here,we present the first demonstration of photonic quasicrystals formed by spin angular momentum, unveiling novel spin-orbit coupling effects absent in traditional field quasicrystals.A de Bruijn tiling like theoretical framework was built elucidating the formation mechanism of spin quasicrystals for diverse symmetries. Moreover, the configurations of these spin textures can be manipulated through the adjustments of the wavefronts, among which phason-like discontinuous dynamics is observed and quantitatively measured. Unlike optical quasicrystals shaped by electromagnetic fields, these spin-governed quasicrystals exhibit quasi-periodic properties of kinematic parameters, extending their potential applications to other physical systems. These findings hold promise for novel advancements in optical trapping, quasicrystal fabrication, and optical encryption systems.

Implicit and Explicit Language Guidance for Diffusion-based Visual Perception

Text-to-image diffusion models have shown powerful ability on conditional image synthesis. With large-scale vision-language pre-training, diffusion models are able to generate high-quality images with rich texture and reasonable structure under different text prompts. However, it is an open problem to adapt the pre-trained diffusion model for visual perception. In this paper, we propose an implicit and explicit language guidance framework for diffusion-based perception, named IEDP. Our IEDP comprises an implicit language guidance branch and an explicit language guidance branch. The implicit branch employs frozen CLIP image encoder to directly generate implicit text embeddings that are fed to diffusion model, without using explicit text prompts. The explicit branch utilizes the ground-truth labels of corresponding images as text prompts to condition feature extraction of diffusion model. During training, we jointly train diffusion model by sharing the model weights of these two branches. As a result, implicit and explicit branches can jointly guide feature learning. During inference, we only employ implicit branch for final prediction, which does not require any ground-truth labels. Experiments are performed on two typical perception tasks, including semantic segmentation and depth estimation. Our IEDP achieves promising performance on both tasks. For semantic segmentation, our IEDP has the mIoU$^\text{ss}$ score of 55.9% on AD20K validation set, which outperforms the baseline method VPD by 2.2%. For depth estimation, our IEDP outperforms the baseline method VPD with a relative gain of 11.0%.

The hidden spin-momentum locking and topological defects in unpolarized light fields

Electromagnetic waves characterized by intensity, phase, and polarization degrees of freedom are widely applied in data storage, encryption, and communications. However, these properties can be substantially affected by phase disorders and disturbances, whereas high-dimensional degrees of freedom including momentum and angular momentum of electromagnetic waves can offer new insights into their features and phenomena, for example topological characteristics and structures that are robust to these disturbances. Here, we discover and demonstrate theoretically and experimentally spin-momentum locking and topological defects in unpolarized light. The coherent spin is locked to the kinetic momentum except for a small coupling spin term, due to the simultaneous presence of transverse magnetic and electric components in unpolarized light. To cancel the coupling term, we employ a metal film acting as a polarizer to form some skyrmion-like spin textures at the metal/air interface. Using an in-house scanning optical microscopic system to image the out-of-plane spin density of the focused unpolarized vortex light, we obtained experimental results that coincide well with our theoretical predictions. The theory and technique promote the applications of topological defects in optical data storage, encryption, and decryption, and communications.

Spin decomposition and topological properties in a generic electromagnetic field

Electromagnetic spins, including longitudinal and transverse ones, have been playing important roles in light-matter interactions. Here, we formulate a unified equation to uncover the physical origins and topological properties of longitudinal and transverse spins in a generic electromagnetic field. The equation reveals universally that the transverse spin is locked with the kinetic momentum and originated from the transverse inhomogeneities of field, whereas the helix-dependent longitudinal spin orients parallel to the local wavevector. Remarkably, a hidden extraordinary helix-dependent transverse spin possessing helix-dependent spin-momentum locking is discovered and the number of locking states consistent with the nontrivial topological spin Chern number. Furthermore, this spin which determines the inverted helical components is related to the Berry curvature closely. The findings, which are demonstrated experimentally by measuring the three-dimensional spin components in the focusing configuration, will deepen the understanding the underlying physics of spins and open an avenue for chiral quantum optical applications.

Photonic spin lattices: symmetry constraints for skyrmion and meron topologies

Symmetry governs many electronic and photonic phenomena in optics and condensed matter physics. Skyrmions and merons are prominent topological structures in magnetic materials, with the topological features determined by the interplay between anisotropy of a material and its magnetization. Here we theoretically show and experimentally demonstrate that the symmetry of the electromagnetic field determines the spin topological properties of the guided modes via spin-orbit coupling and may only result in either hexagonal spin-skyrmion or square spin-meron lattices. We also show that in the absence of spin-orbit coupling these spin topologies are degenerated in dynamic field-skyrmions, unifying description of electromagnetic field topologies. The results provide new understanding of electromagnetic field topology and its transformations as well as new opportunities for applications in quantum optics, spin-optics and topological photonics.

Deep-subwavelength features of photonic skyrmions in a confined electromagnetic field with orbital angular momentum

In magnetic materials, skyrmions are nanoscale regions where the orientation of electron spin changes in a vortex-type manner. Here we show that spin-orbit coupling in a focused vector beam results in a skyrmion-like photonic spin distribution of the excited waveguided fields. While diffraction limits the spatial size of intensity distributions, the direction of the field, defining photonic spin, is not subject to this limitation. We demonstrate that the skyrmion spin structure varies on the deep-subwavelength scales down to 1/60 of light wavelength, which corresponds to about 10 nanometre lengthscale. The application of photonic skyrmions may range from high-resolution imaging and precision metrology to quantum technologies and data storage where the spin structure of the field, not its intensity, can be applied to achieve deep-subwavelength optical patterns.
