Low-energy Muon-Nucleon scattering experiment: LUNE (White Paper)

The HIAF will provide high-intensity, high-quality muon beams with momenta from 0.5 to 7.5 GeV/c. This energy range is uniquely suited for precision muon scattering, bridging the gap between low-energy electron facilities and future high-energy lepton-ion colliders. In particular, HIAF will enable precision measurements with both positive and negative muon beams over a broad kinematic range, complementing existing electron-scattering facilities such as JLab, EicC and EIC. Based on HIAF muon source, the LUNE Collaboration has been established to address several fundamental questions in nuclear and particle physics, including the proton charge radius puzzle, nucleon electromagnetic structure, and the dynamics of quantum electrodynamics and hadronic interactions. The program proceeds in two phases, from elastic scattering to nucleon structure and beyond-Standard-Model searches. The experiment is expected to determine the proton charge radius with a precision of approximately 1.0\% using elastic muon-proton scattering. It will also perform systematic measurements of the proton electromagnetic form factors with both $μ^+$ and $μ^-$ beams, enabling precise studies of two-photon exchange effects and stringent tests of quantum electrodynamics. Beyond elastic scattering, LUNE will investigate TMD, gravitational form factors, and nuclear charge radii, providing new insights into the 3D structure of nucleons and nuclei. The experiment will further address important topics including Coulomb-distortion corrections, nuclear medium effects, and possible signatures of physics beyond the Standard Model. This white paper presents the scientific motivation, detector concept, expected performance, and long-term strategy of LUNE.

Hyperon-Nucleon Spectrometer

Chirality lies at the heart of low-energy QCD, governing the symmetry structure that shapes hadron masses and strong interaction dynamics. Among the most compelling open questions tied to chiral dynamics and spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking is the longstanding $Λ$ polarization puzzle, in which $Λ$ hyperons produced in unpolarized hadronic collisions exhibit a surprisingly large transverse polarization that remains theoretically unexplained. This whitepaper presents the proposal for the Hyperon-Nucleon Spectrometer (H-NS) at the High-Intensity heavy-ion Accelerator Facility (HIAF). Leveraging the high energy and high intensity of HIAF's proton and heavy-ion beams, the H-NS experiment will perform systematic studies of hyperon polarization phenomena and their underlying mechanisms in proton-proton ($pp$), proton-nucleus ($pA$), and nucleus-nucleus ($AA$) collisions in the fixed target mode. A wide-range beam energy scan, including proton beams from 3 GeV up to 9.3 GeV (HIAF) and up to 32 GeV (upgraded HIAF), will be conducted to examine the dependence of polarization on collision energy. The spectrometer is designed with specialized detectors capable of high-precision reconstruction of final-state baryon polarizations. Among its many interesting and important measurements, H-NS will simultaneously measure hyperon and proton spin observables to explore the polarization mechanism in hadronic interactions and the spin structure of baryons. Furthermore, the use of $pA$ and $AA$ collisions will enable detailed investigations of cold and hot nuclear matter effects on spin polarization. Its physics program and detector development will significantly benefit the future Electron-ion Collider in China.

Design and Performance Simulation of the Electromagnetic Calorimeter at EicC

The electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) is a key detector component for precise electron and photon measurements in electron-ion collision experiments. At the Electron-Ion Collider in China (EicC), high-performance calorimetry is essential for exploring the internal structure of nucleons and studying the dynamics of quarks and gluons within quantum chromodynamics (QCD). This paper presents the optimized design and performance simulation of the EicC ECAL system. The ECAL consists of three specialized sections tailored to distinct detection environments: (1) an electron-Endcap employing high-resolution pure Cesium Iodide (pCsI) crystals, (2) a central barrel, and (3) an ion-Endcap, both adopting a cost-effective Shashlik-style sampling calorimeter with improved light yield. Each segment's geometry and material composition have been systematically optimized through Geant4 simulations to achieve excellent energy and position resolutions as well as strong electron-pion discrimination. The simulated performance indicates that the ECAL can achieve energy resolutions of 2 percent divided by sqrt(E) for pCsI crystals and 5 percent divided by sqrt(E) for Shashlik modules, meeting the design goals of the EicC detector.

Exclusive Charmonium Production at the Electron-ion collider in China

We investigate the exclusive $J/ψ$ production at the future Electron-ion collider in China by utilizing the eSTARlight event generator. We model the cross-section and kinematics by fitting to the world data of $J/ψ$ photoproduction. Projected statistical uncertainties on $J/ψ$ production are based on the design of a central detector, which consists of a tracker and vertex subsystem. The precision of the pseudo-data allows us to probe the near-threshold mechanism, e.g. the re-scattering effect. The significance of the forward amplitudes is discussed as well. The design and optimization of the detector enhance the potential for exploring the near-threshold region and the realm of high four-momentum transfer squared, which is of particular interest on several physics topics..

Study of charm hadronization and in-medium modification at the Electron-ion Collider in China

Charm quark production and its hadronization in ep and eA collisions at the future Electron-Ion Collider in China (EicC) will help us understand the quark/gluon fragmentation processes and the hadronization mechanisms in the nuclear medium, especially within a poorly constrained kinematic region ($x<0.1$). In this paper, we report a study on the production of charmed hadrons, $D^0$ and $Λ_c^+$, reconstructed with a dedicated GEANT4 simulation of vertex$\,\&\,$tracking detectors designed for EicC. The $Λ_c^+$/$D^0$ ratios as functions of multiplicity and $p_T$, as well as the $D^0$ double ratio are presented with projected statistical precision.

Lambda polarization at Electron-ion collider in China

Lambda polarization can be measured through its self-analyzing weak decay, making it an ideal candidate for studying spin effects in high energy scatterings. In lepton-nucleon deeply inelastic scatterings (DIS), Lambda polarization measurements can probe the polarized parton distribution functions (PDFs) and the polarized fragmentation functions (FFs). One of the most promising facilities for high-energy nuclear physics research is the proposed Electron-ion collider in China (EicC). As a next-generation facility, EicC is set to propel our understandings of nuclear physics to new heights. In this article, we study the Lambda production in electron-proton collision at EicC energy, in particular Lambda's reconstruction based on the performance of the designed EicC detector. In addition, taking spontaneous transverse polarization as an example, we provide a theoretical prediction with statistical projection based on one month of EicC data taking, offering valuable insights into future research prospects.

Probing gluon distributions with $D^0$ production at the EicC

The Electron-Ion Collider in China (EicC) has been proposed to study the inner structure of matter and fundamental laws of strong interactions. In this paper, we will present a conceptual design of the tracking system based on the state-of-art silicon detector and Micro-Pattern Gaseous Detector at the EicC and demonstrate that it will enable us to reconstruct charm hadron with good significance, hence study gluonic parton distribution functions in nucleons and nuclei, as well as gluon helicity distributions. The impact study using reweighting techniques shows that the impact of the EicC will be mainly in the large $x$ region. It complements similar physics programs at the Electron-Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory.

Track Finding at Belle II

This paper describes the track-finding algorithm that is used for event reconstruction in the Belle II experiment operating at the SuperKEKB B-factory in Tsukuba, Japan. The algorithm is designed to balance the requirements of a high efficiency to find charged particles with a good track parameter resolution, a low rate of spurious tracks, and a reasonable demand on CPU resources. The software is implemented in a flexible, modular manner and employs a diverse selection of global and local track-finding algorithms to achieve an optimal performance.
