Superconductivity in Ru substituted BaFe2-xRuxAs2

The occurrence of bulk superconductivity at ~22 K is reported in polycrystalline samples of BaFe2-xRuxAs2 for nominal Ru content in the range of x=0.75 to 1.125. A systematic suppression of the spin density wave transition temperature (TSDW) precedes the appearance of superconductivity in the system. A phase diagram is proposed based on the measured TSDW and superconducting transition temperature (TC) variations as a function of Ru composition. Band structure calculations, indicate introduction of electron carriers in the system upon Ru substitutiom. The calculated magnetic moment on Fe shows a minimum at x=1.0, suggesting that the suppression of the magnetic moment is associated with the emergence of superconductivity. Results of low temperature and high field Mossbauer measurements are presented. These indicate weakening of magnetic interaction with Ru substitution

Asymmetric diffusion at the interfaces in multilayers

Nanoscale diffusion at the interfaces in multilayers plays a vital role in controlling their physical properties for a variety of applications. In the present work depth-dependent interdiffusion in a Si/Fe/Si trilayer has been studied with sub-nanometer depth resolution, using x ray standing waves. High depth-selectivity of the present technique allows one to measure diffusion at the two interfaces of Fe namely, Fe-on-Si and Si-on-Fe, independently, yielding an intriguing result that Fe diffusivity at the two interfaces is not symmetric. It is faster at the Fe-on-Si interface. While the values of activation energy at the two interfaces are comparable, the main difference is found in the pre-exponent factor suggesting different mechanisms of diffusion at the two interfaces. This apparently counter-intuitive result has been understood in terms of an asymmetric structure of the interfaces as revealed by depth selective conversion electron Mossbauer spectroscopy. A difference in the surface free energies of Fe and Si can lead to such differences in the structure of the two interfaces.

Iron self-diffusion in FeZr/$^{57}$FeZr multilayers measured by neutron reflectometry: Effect of applied compressive stress

Iron self-diffusion in nano-composite FeZr alloy has been investigated using neutron reflectometry technique as a function of applied compressive stress. A composite target of (Fe+Zr) and (57Fe+Zr) was alternatively sputtered to deposit chemically homogeneous multilayer (CHM) structure, [Fe75Zr25/57Fe75Zr25]10. The multilayers were deposited on to a bent Si wafer using a 3-point bending device. Post-deposition, the bending of the substrate was released which results in an applied compressive stress on to the multilayer. In the as-deposited state, the alloy multilayer forms an amorphous phase, which crystallizes into a nano-composite phase when heated at 373 K. Bragg peaks due to isotopic contrast were observed from CHM, when measured by neutron reflectivity, while x-ray reflectivity showed a pattern corresponding to a single layer. Self-diffusion of iron was measured with the decay of the intensities at the Bragg peaks in the neutron reflectivity pattern after thermal annealing at different temperatures. It was found that the self-diffusion of iron slows down with an increase in the strength of applied compressive stress.
