Induced-Minor-Closed Classes have Linear, Square-Root, or Sub-Polynomial Tree-Independence

An independent set in a graph $G$ is a set of pairwise non-adjacent vertices. A tree decomposition of $G$ is a pair $(T, χ)$ where $T$ is a tree and $χ: V(T) \rightarrow 2^{V(G)}$ is a function satisfying two axioms: for every edge $uv \in E(G)$ there is an $x \in V(T)$ such that $\{u,v\} \subseteq χ(x)$, and for every vertex $u \in V(G)$ the set $\{x \in V(T) | u \in χ(x)\}$ induces a non-empty and connected subtree of $T$. The sets $χ(x)$ for $x \in V(T)$ are called the bags of the tree decomposition. The tree-independence number of $G$ is the minimum taken over all tree decompositions of $G$ of the maximum size of an independent set of the graph induced by a bag of the decomposition. A graph $H$ is an induced minor of a graph $G$ if a graph isomorphic to $H$ can be obtained from $G$ by vertex deletions and edge contractions. We prove that for every $t\in\mathbb{N}$ there exists an $ε> 0$ such that every graph $G$ either contains the complete bipartite graph $K_{t,t}$ or the wall $W_{t\times t}$ as an induced minor, or has tree-independence at most $O(2^{O((\log n)^{1-ε})})$. This leads to algorithms with running time $2^{n^{o(1)}}$, for a wide range of problems on $\{K_{t,t}, W_{t\times t}\}$-induced minor free graphs. Our result is a substantial generalization of existing bounds for the tree-independence and tree-width on various graph classes, and a partial resolution of the conjecture of Chudnovsky, E S, and Lokshtanov [Arxiv, 2025] that $\{K_{t,t}, W_{t\times t}\}$-induced minor free graphs have poly-logarithmic tree independence number. The generality comes at the cost of a sub-polynomial, rather than poly-logarithmic upper bound. Our result leads to a complete classification of induced-minor closed classes into ones that have sub-polynomial tree-independence, tree-independence equal to $\tilde{O}(\sqrt{n})$, and linear tree-independence.

(Treewidth, Clique)-Boundedness and Poly-logarithmic Tree-Independence

An independent set in a graph $G$ is a set of pairwise non-adjacent vertices. A tree decomposition of $G$ is a pair $(T, χ)$ where $T$ is a tree and $χ: V(T) \rightarrow 2^{V(G)}$ is a function satisfying the following two axioms: for every edge $uv \in V(G)$ there is a $x \in V(T)$ such that $\{u,v\} \subseteq χ(x)$, and for every vertex $u \in V(G)$ the set $\{x \in V(T) ~:~ u \in χ(X)\}$ induces a non-empty and connected subtree of $T$. The sets $χ(x)$ for $x \in V(T)$ are called the bags of the tree decomposition. The tree-independence number of $G$ is the minimum taken over all tree decompositions of $G$ of the maximum size of an independent set of the graph induced by a bag of the tree decomposition. The study of graph classes with bounded tree-independence number has attracted much attention in recent years, in part due its improtant algorithmic implications. A conjecture of Dallard, Milanič and Štorgel, connecting tree-independence number to the classical notion of treewidth, was one of the motivating problems in the area. This conjecture was recently disproved, but here we prove a slight variant of it, that retains much of the algorithmic significance. As part of the proof we introduce the notion of independence-containers, which can be viewed as a generalization of the set of all maximal cliques of a graph, and is of independent interest.

Induced Minors and Coarse Tree Decompositions

Let $G$ be a graph, $S \subseteq V(G)$ be a vertex set in $G$ and $r$ be a positive integer. The distance $r$-independence number of $S$ is the size of the largest subset $I \subseteq S$ such that no pair $u$, $v$ of vertices in $I$ have a path on at most $r$ edges between them in $G$. It has been conjectured [Chudnovsky et al., arXiv, 2025] that for every positive integer $t$ there exist positive integers $c$, $d$ such that every graph $G$ that excludes both the complete bipartite graph $K_{t,t}$ and the grid $\boxplus_t$ as an induced minor has a tree decomposition in which every bag has (distance $1$) independence number at most $c(\log n)^d$. We prove a weaker version of this conjecture where every bag of the tree decomposition has distance $16(\log n + 1)$-independence number at most $c(\log n)^d$. On the way we also prove a version of the conjecture where every bag of the decomposition has distance $8$-independence number at most $2^{c (\log n)^{1-(1/d)}}$.

Parameterized Approximation of Rectangle Stabbing

In the Rectangle Stabbing problem, input is a set ${\cal R}$ of axis-parallel rectangles and a set ${\cal L}$ of axis parallel lines in the plane. The task is to find a minimum size set ${\cal L}^* \subseteq {\cal L}$ such that for every rectangle $R \in {\cal R}$ there is a line $\ell \in {\cal L}^*$ such that $\ell$ intersects $R$. Gaur et al. [Journal of Algorithms, 2002] gave a polynomial time $2$-approximation algorithm, while Dom et al. [WALCOM 2009] and Giannopolous et al. [EuroCG 2009] independently showed that, assuming FPT $\neq$ W[1], there is no algorithm with running time $f(k)(|{\cal L}||{\cal R}|)^{O(1)}$ that determines whether there exists an optimal solution with at most $k$ lines. We give the first parameterized approximation algorithm for the problem with a ratio better than $2$. In particular we give an algorithm that given ${\cal R}$, ${\cal L}$, and an integer $k$ runs in time $k^{O(k)}(|{\cal L}||{\cal R}|)^{O(1)}$ and either correctly concludes that there does not exist a solution with at most $k$ lines, or produces a solution with at most $\frac{7k}{4}$ lines. We complement our algorithm by showing that unless FPT $=$ W[1], the Rectangle Stabbing problem does not admit a $(\frac{5}{4}-ε)$-approximation algorithm running in $f(k)(|{\cal L}||{\cal R}|)^{O(1)}$ time for any function $f$ and $ε> 0$.

Beyond Exact Fairness: Envy-Free Incomplete Connected Fair Division

We study the problem of Envy-Free Incomplete Connected Fair Division, where exactly p vertices of an undirected graph must be allocated to agents such that each agent receives a connected share and does not envy another agent's share. Focusing on agents with additive valuations, we show that the problem remains computationally hard when parameterized by p and the number of agents. This result holds even for star graphs and with the input numbers given in unary representation, thereby resolving an open problem posed by Gahlawat and Zehavi (FSTTCS 2023). In stark contrast, we show that if one is willing to tolerate even the slightest amount of envy, then the problem becomes efficient with respect to the natural parameters. Specifically, we design an Efficient Parameterized Approximation Scheme parameterized by p and the number of agent types. Our algorithm works on general graphs and remains efficient even when the input numbers are provided in binary representation.

A Quasi-Polynomial Time Algorithm for 3-Coloring Circle Graphs

A graph $G$ is a circle graph if it is an intersection graph of chords of a unit circle. We give an algorithm that takes as input an $n$ vertex circle graph $G$, runs in time at most $n^{O(\log n)}$ and finds a proper $3$-coloring of $G$, if one exists. As a consequence we obtain an algorithm with the same running time to determine whether a given ordered graph $(G, \prec)$ has a $3$-page book embedding. This gives a partial resolution to the well known open problem of Dujmović and Wood [Discret. Math. Theor. Comput. Sci. 2004], Eppstein [2014], and Bachmann, Rutter and Stumpf [J. Graph Algorithms Appl. 2024] of whether 3-Coloring on circle graphs admits a polynomial time algorithm.

An Improved Exact Algorithm for Knot-Free Vertex Deletion

A knot $K$ in a directed graph $D$ is a strongly connected component of size at least two such that there is no arc $(u,v)$ with $u \in V(K)$ and $v\notin V(K)$. Given a directed graph $D=(V,E)$, we study Knot-Free Vertex Deletion (KFVD), where the goal is to remove the minimum number of vertices such that the resulting graph contains no knots. This problem naturally emerges from its application in deadlock resolution since knots are deadlocks in the OR-model of distributed computation. The fastest known exact algorithm in literature for KFVD runs in time $\mathcal{O}^\star(1.576^n)$. In this paper, we present an improved exact algorithm running in time $\mathcal{O}^\star(1.4549^n)$, where $n$ is the number of vertices in $D$. We also prove that the number of inclusion wise minimal knot-free vertex deletion sets is $\mathcal{O}^\star(1.4549^n)$ and construct a family of graphs with $Ω(1.4422^n)$ minimal knot-free vertex deletion sets
