EFT Pathways to $|ΔB| =2$: Chiral Constructions and Phenomenology

We develop a systematic effective field theory framework for studying $|ΔB|=2$ interactions across energy scales. Using chiral symmetry, we construct the complete and non-redundant set of operators governing these interactions at low energies and establish their connection to the corresponding operators in the Standard Model effective field theory, as well as to their realizations in baryon chiral perturbation theory. The framework is then applied to the phenomenology of baryon-antibaryon oscillations and dinucleon decay. While oscillations probe only a limited subset of operator structures, dinucleon decay is sensitive to a significantly broader class, including transitions that are otherwise inaccessible. In addition, we identify previously unexplored dinucleon decay channels, which can probe these unconstrained regions of parameter space. More generally, this formalism makes explicit the complementarity of different probes and provides a consistent way to trace baryon-number-violating effects from their ultraviolet origin to low-energy hadronic observables, thereby providing a basis for systematic studies of ultraviolet models generating such interactions.

Minimal Flavor Protection for TeV-scale New Physics

We determine how much TeV-scale new physics can deviate from flavor universality, $U(3)^5$, while respecting stringent bounds on flavor-changing neutral currents. The minimal continuous subgroup that must be approximately preserved is identified as $SU(2)_{q} \times U(1)_{X}$. With only a few symmetry-breaking spurions of $\mathcal{O}(10^{-2})$, all observed fermion hierarchies may be reproduced, offering a new perspective on the SM flavor puzzle. Remarkably, this framework provides structural flavor protection for generic TeV-scale new physics within the SMEFT, enlarging the space of collider-accessible scenarios beyond MFV and $U(2)^5$ and allowing for richer patterns of flavor violation.

EFT for Neutrino Oscillations: Theory Developments and Application to JUNO

We contribute to the systematic analysis of New Physics effects in neutrino experiments using Effective Field Theory (EFT) methods. We review and extend the quantum field-theoretical formalism for generic neutrino interactions, discussing the inclusion of matter effects and deriving the connection with the density matrix formalism. On the phenomenological side, we apply this framework for the first time to medium-baseline reactor neutrino experiments. We derive analytical expressions for the relevant oscillation observables and perform a first EFT analysis of the recent JUNO dataset, extracting bounds on the leading non-standard interaction parameters.

The KSVZ Atlas: A Unified SMEFT-ALP Framework

We develop a general framework for matching KSVZ-like ultraviolet completions featuring vector-like fermions and a spontaneously broken $\mathrm{U}(1)_{\mathrm{PQ}}$ symmetry onto the Standard Model Effective Field Theory and the low-energy axion-like particle effective theory. The framework applies to arbitrary vector-like fermion representations and PQ-charge assignments, and systematically captures the effective interactions generated in both sectors. We then perform a comprehensive phenomenological analysis of the resulting SMEFT operators, based on global fits to electroweak precision, Higgs, and flavor observables, obtaining robust bounds on the corresponding Wilson coefficients that are largely independent of the details of the ultraviolet realization. These constraints can subsequently be translated into the QCD axion and ALP parameter space, providing indirect probes of ALP couplings. We further investigate several representative examples of the interplay between the SMEFT and ALP sectors, illustrating how direct ALP searches and indirect precision and flavor observables provide complementary information on the same underlying dynamics. We find that, over large regions of parameter space, indirect constraints derived from the SMEFT analysis dominate over direct ALP probes, except in scenarios where the PQ-charge assignment permits mass mixing with Standard Model fermions. Overall, our results establish a unified framework for connecting ultraviolet completions, SMEFT analyses, and ALP searches, enabling both the interpretation of existing constraints and the exploration of future signals within a common theoretical setting.

Implications of Flavor Symmetries for Baryon Number Violation

In the Standard Model, baryon number is an accidental symmetry, whose violation would constitute unambiguous evidence of new physics, with proton decay providing its most prominent experimental signature. At the same time, the peculiar structure of flavor can serve as a guiding principle for exploring possible new-physics effects. In this work, we present a systematic classification of dimension-six baryon-number-violating (BNV) SMEFT operators across several flavor-symmetry assumptions and analyze the resulting phenomenology. Interestingly, in certain flavor scenarios the non-trivial interplay with tiny neutrino masses leads to proton-decay constraints compatible with BNV scales in the multi-TeV range. Finally, we complement the EFT analysis by identifying one-particle UV completions of the BNV operators, revealing scenarios in which the leading-order EFT description may not fully account for their underlying dynamics.

UV origins of CP-violating leptonic Yukawa couplings

Probing the CP nature of the Higgs Yukawa couplings is a promising avenue for unraveling new physics effects. In this work, we investigate the possible single- and two-field UV origins of CP-violating leptonic Yukawa couplings, using the Standard Model Effective Field Theory as a stepping stone. We demonstrate a rich set of constraints on the UV model parameters, including direct Higgs measurements, electric and magnetic dipole moments of leptons, charged lepton flavor violating observables, and electroweak precision tests. Studying representative flavor assumptions we find that the precision constraints are often, but not always, more constraining than the dedicated LHC analyses of modified leptonic Yukawa couplings.

Expanding the Landscape of Exotic Muon Decays

We chart new-physics models that produce exotic, high-multiplicity muon decays featuring prompt or displaced $e^+e^-$ pairs and/or photons, with or without missing energy, such as $μ\to 5e$, $μ\to 7e$, etc. Starting from an effective-field-theory perspective, we estimate the reach on the ultraviolet scale and identify conditions under which lower-multiplicity modes are suppressed or occur at comparable rates. We then construct explicit realizations in minimal dark-sector models with light, feebly interacting particles, such as flavor-protected scalars, dark photons, inelastic dark matter, and axion-like particles. The predicted novel signatures can be probed at MEG II and Mu3e, as well as during calibration runs of COMET and Mu2e. A future discovery would provide valuable insights into short-distance dynamics and the mechanism of lepton-flavor symmetry breaking.

A Guide to Functional Methods Beyond One-Loop Order

Functional methods can be applied to the quantum effective action to efficiently determine counterterms and matching conditions for effective field theories. We extend the toolbox to two-loop order and beyond and show how to evaluate the expansion of the path integral in a manifestly gauge-covariant manner. We also generalize the method to theories with mixed spin statistics and prove the validity of the hard-region matching formula to all loop orders. The methods are exemplified with a two-loop matching calculation of the Euler-Heisenberg Lagrangian resulting from decoupling the electron in QED.

Leptonic Flavor from Modular $A_4$: UV Mediators and SMEFT Realizations

The absence of direct evidence for new physics at current collider energies motivates the study of indirect effects within the framework of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). In this work, we investigate the role of the $A_4$ discrete flavor symmetry in constraining the UV dynamics, giving rise to dimension-6 SMEFT operators involving leptons. We consider renormalizable interactions between SM fields and heavy mediators, classified according to their $A_4$ transformation properties in the modular framework, where Yukawa structures are encoded in modular forms. Restricting our analysis to UV interactions with at most a single modular form insertion, we study the resulting classification of $A_4$ UV mediator irreps and explore their implications across a range of observables, including both lepton-flavor-conserving and lepton-flavor-violating processes. A detailed phenomenological analysis is carried out, incorporating both tree-level and one-loop matching contributions for scalar and fermionic mediators, as well as leading-log RGE effects in case of vectors.

Discrete Leptonic Flavor Symmetries: UV Mediators and Phenomenology

Given the absence of a definitive top-down indication for understanding the peculiar structure of the lepton sector, discrete flavor symmetries offer a profound perspective for examining the intricate patterns of lepton masses and mixings. In this work, drawing upon previous studies on the interplay of flavor symmetries with the potential UV completions from a purely bottom-up perspective, three well-motivated discrete flavor groups, suitable for portraying the leptonic sector as well as the neutrino masses, specifically $A_4$, $A_5$ and $S_4$, are explored within this framework, leading to the comprehensive classification of the NP mediators, along with the tree-level matching relations onto dimension-6 SMEFT operators. Particular emphasis is placed on the discrete leptonic directions, for which a phenomenological analysis is carried out in order to constrain various NP mediators, where significant focus is directed towards the examination of the cLFV operators, which, for the wide range of applicable cases, offer the leading constraint.

Constraints on subleading interactions in beta decay Lagrangian

We discuss the effective field theory (EFT) for nuclear beta decay. The general quark-level EFT describing charged-current interactions between quarks and leptons is matched to the nucleon-level non-relativistic EFT at the O(MeV) momentum scale characteristic for beta transitions. The matching takes into account, for the first time, the effect of all possible beyond-the-Standard-Model interactions at the subleading order in the recoil momentum. We calculate the impact of all the Wilson coefficients of the leading and subleading EFT Lagrangian on the differential decay width in allowed beta transitions. As an example application, we show how the existing experimental data constrain the subleading Wilson coefficients corresponding to pseudoscalar, weak magnetism, and induced tensor interactions. The data display a 3.5 sigma evidence for nucleon weak magnetism, in agreement with the theory prediction based on isospin symmetry.

Functional Matching and Renormalization Group Equations at Two-Loop Order

We present a systematic method for determining the two-loop effective Lagrangian resulting from integrating out a set of heavy particles in an ultraviolet scalar theory. We prove that the matching coefficients are entirely determined from the (double-)hard region of the loop integrals and present a master formula for matching, applicable to both diagrammatic and functional approaches. We further employ functional methods to determine compact expressions for the effective Lagrangian that do not rely on any previous knowledge of its structure or symmetries. The same methods are also applicable to the computation of renormalization group equations. We demonstrate the application of the functional approach by computing the two-loop matching coefficients and renormalization group equations in a scalar toy model.

Leading directions in the SMEFT: Renormalization Effects

The stability of the electroweak scale, challenged by the absence of deviations in flavor physics, prompts the consideration of SMEFT scenarios governed by approximate SM flavor symmetries. This study examines microscopic theories that match onto a set of $U(3)^5$-symmetric dimension-6 operators. Renormalization group mixing from the ultraviolet to the electroweak scale yields significant phenomenological constraints, particularly pronounced for UV-motivated directions. To demonstrate this, we explore a complete suite of tree-level models featuring new spin-0, 1/2, and 1 fields, categorized by their irreducible representations under the flavor group. We find that for the leading directions, corresponding to a single-mediator dominance, RG mixing effects occasionally serve as the primary indirect probe.

Adding Flavor to the SMEFT

We study the flavor structure of the lepton and baryon number--conserving dimension-6 operators in the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT). Building on the work of [1], we define several well-motivated flavor symmetries and symmetry-breaking patterns that serve as competing hypotheses about the ultraviolet (UV) dynamics beyond the SM, not far above the TeV scale. In particular, we consider four different structures in the quark sector and seven in the charged lepton sector. The set of flavor-breaking spurions is (almost) always taken to be the minimal one needed to reproduce the observed charged fermion masses and mixings. For each case, we explicitly construct and count the operators to the first few orders in the spurion expansion, providing ready-for-use setups for phenomenological studies and global fits. We provide a Mathematica package SMEFTflavor to facilitate similar analyses for flavor symmetries not covered in this work.

Leading directions in the SMEFT

Short-distance new physics at (or slightly) above the TeV scale should not excessively violate the approximate flavor symmetries of the SM in order to comply with stringent constraints from flavor-changing neutral currents. In this respect, flavor symmetries provide an effective organizing principle for the vast parameter space of the SMEFT. In this work, we classify all possible irreducible representations under $U(3)^5$ flavor symmetry of new heavy spin-0, 1/2, and 1 fields which integrate out to dimension-6 operators at the tree level. For a general perturbative UV model, the resulting flavor-symmetric interactions are very restrictive and, in most cases, predict a single Hermitian operator with a definite sign. These leading directions in the SMEFT space deserve particular attention. We derive an extensive set of present experimental constraints by utilizing the existing global SMEFT fits, which incorporate data from top quark, Higgs boson, and electroweak measurements, along with constraints on dilepton and 4-lepton contact interactions. The derived set of bounds comprehensively summarises the present knowledge from indirect searches of flavor-blind new physics mediators.
