Higgs Boson Pair Production via Gluon Fusion: Higher-Order Corrections and Theoretical Uncertainties

In this contribution, the higher-order QCD and electroweak corrections to Standard Model Higgs boson pair production via the gluon-fusion mechanism, $gg\to hh$, are summarized and the different sources of theoretical uncertainty are assessed. The discussion includes finite top quark mass effects, matching to parton showers, approximate NNLO and N$^3$LO QCD corrections, NLO electroweak effects, and uncertainties associated with the top quark mass scheme and perturbative scale choices. In addition, we provide an updated state-of-the-art recommendation for the inclusive gluon-fusion Higgs boson pair production cross section and the corresponding Higgs boson pair invariant-mass distribution.

Light-by-light scattering: asymptotic expansions, Coulomb resummation and NLO corrections

Light-by-light (LbL) scattering is one of the earliest predictions of quantum electrodynamics (QED). Interest in this process has been renewed following its experimental observation at the LHC and the prospects of future measurements at free-electron laser facilities. In this paper, we refine theoretical predictions for LbL scattering by improving the full fermion-mass-dependent two-loop QCD and QED helicity amplitudes using high- and low-energy asymptotic expansions, and by performing Coulomb resummation in the threshold region. We present state-of-the-art predictions for LbL cross sections in the Standard Model and provide a new event generator, LbLatNLO, for Monte Carlo simulations of LbL scattering.

FKS subtraction for quarkonium production at NLO

We extend the local infrared-divergence subtraction formalism, originally proposed by Frixione, Kunszt and Signer (FKS), to calculate short-distance (differential) cross section for any inclusive process involving a quarkonium particle in non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorisation at next-to-leading order (NLO) accuracy in the strong coupling constant $α_s$. The new formulas are generally applicable to the production of an S- or P-wave quarkonium state in association with any number of elementary particles. The main new ingredients derived in this paper are the local and integrated soft counterterms for the colour-singlet and colour-octet P-wave bound states. It, therefore, paves the way to the automation of the NLO calculations for heavy quarkonium inclusive and associated production processes.

Two-loop massive QCD and QED helicity amplitudes for light-by-light scattering

We present the analytic and compact two-loop helicity amplitudes for QCD and QED corrections to the light-by-light scattering process with massive internal fermions. We express the master integrals either in terms of multiple polylogarithms or in terms of iterated integrals with dlog one-forms. We also elaborate on optimizing the analytic results for each phase-space region. This makes the numerical evaluation of the scattering amplitudes fast, stable and suitable for phenomenological applications.

Light-by-Light Scattering at Next-to-Leading Order in QCD and QED

The recent experimental observation of Light-by-Light (LbL) scattering at the Large Hadron Collider has revived interest in this fundamental process, and especially of the accurate prediction of its cross-section, which we present here for the first time at Next-to-Leading Order (NLO) in both QCD and QED. We compare two radically different computational approaches, both exact in the fermion mass dependence, thus offering a strong cross-check of our results. The first approach is a fully analytic method to calculate compact and well-organized two-loop helicity amplitudes. The second one is entirely numerical and leverages the Local Unitarity construction. Our two calculations agree with each other and conclude that including the exact fermion mass contribution typically increases the size of the NLO corrections. Moreover, we find that the exact result converges slowly to the massless limit of the high-energy regime, thus emphasizing the importance of including the full mass dependence at NLO. We also compare our results with the ATLAS measurement of LbL in ultra-peripheral lead-lead collisions, and find that the inclusion of exact NLO corrections reduces, but does not eliminate, the existing tension with theoretical predictions.

Resummed prediction for Higgs boson production through $b\bar{b}$ annihilation at N$^3$LL

We present an accurate theoretical prediction for the production of Higgs boson through bottom quark annihilation at the LHC up to next-to-next-to-next-to leading order (N$^3$LO) plus next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (N$^3$LL) accuracy. We determine the third order perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) correction to the process dependent constant in the resummed expression using the three loop bottom quark form factor and third order quark soft distribution function. Thanks to the recent computation of N$^3$LO corrections to this production cross-section from all the partonic channels, an accurate matching can be obtained for a consistent predictions at N$^3$LO+N$^3$LL accuracy in QCD. We have studied in detail the impact of resummed threshold contributions to inclusive cross-sections at various centre-of-mass energies and also discussed their sensitivity to renormalization and factorization scales at next-to-next-to leading order (NNLO) matched with next-to-next-to leading logarithm (NNLL). At N$^3$LO+N$^3$LL, we predict the cross-section for different centre-of-mass energies using the recently available results in \cite{Duhr:2019kwi} as well as study the renormalization scale dependence at the same order.

NNLO QCD$\oplus$QED corrections to Higgs production in bottom quark annihilation

We present next-to-next-to leading order (NNLO) quantum electrodynamics (QED) corrections to the production of the Higgs boson in bottom quark annihilation at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in the five flavor scheme. We have systematically included the NNLO corrections resulting from the interference of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and QED interactions. We have investigated the infrared (IR) structure of the bottom quark form factor up to two loop level in QED and in QCD$\times$QED using K+G equation. We find that the IR poles in the form factor are controlled by the universal cusp, collinear and soft anomalous dimensions. In addition, we derive the QED as well as QCD$\times$QED contributions to soft distribution function as well as to the ultraviolet renormalization constant of the bottom Yukawa coupling up to second order in strong coupling and fine structure constant. Finally, we report our findings on the numerical impact of the NNLO results from QED and QCD$\times$QED at the LHC energies taking into account the dominant NNLO QCD corrections.

Higgs pair production from bottom quark annihilation to NNLO in QCD

We present the first results on the two-loop massless QCD corrections to the four-point amplitude $b+\overline{b} \rightarrow H+H$ in the five flavor scheme, treating bottom quarks as massless. This amplitude is sensitive to the trilinear Higgs boson coupling. Our two-loop result for this amplitude constitutes of purely virtual contributions to the next-to-next-to-leading order QCD predictions for the production of a pair of Higgs bosons at the Large Hadron Collider. Using these two loop amplitudes and exploiting the universality of the soft contributions in perturbative QCD, we obtain the NNLO QCD effects in the soft plus virtual approximation. We find that the inclusion of higher order terms reduce the uncertainties resulting from the unphysical renormalisation and factorisation scales.
