Avoiding 3-Term Geometric Progressions in Hurwitz Quaternions

Several recent papers have considered the problem of how large a subset of integers can be without containing any 3-term geometric progressions. This problem has also recently been generalized to rings of integers in quadratic number fields and polynomial rings over finite fields. We study the analogous problem in the Hurwitz quaternion order to see how non-commutativity affects the problem. We compute an exact formula for the density of a 3-term geometric-progression-free set of Hurwitz quaternions arising from a greedy algorithm and derive upper and lower bounds for the supremum of upper densities of 3-term geometric-progression-free sets of Hurwitz quaternions.

In this expository article, we present a brief introduction to the theory of Hilbert modular forms and Galois representations, and describe what it means to attach a compatible system of Galois representations to a Hilbert modular form.

Filtering cohomology of ordinary and Lagrangian Grassmannians

This paper studies, for a positive integer $m$, the subalgebra of the cohomology ring of the complex Grassmannians generated by the elements of degree at most $m$. We build in two ways upon a conjecture for the Hilbert series of this subalgebra due to Reiner and Tudose. The first reinterprets it in terms of the operation of $k$-conjugation, suggesting two conjectural bases for the subalgebras that would imply their conjecture. The second introduces an analogous conjecture for the cohomology of Lagrangian Grassmannians.

Smocked Metric Spaces and their Tangent Cones

We introduce the notion of a smocked metric spaces and explore the balls and geodesics in a collection of different smocked spaces. We find their rescaled Gromov-Hausdorff limits and prove these tangent cones at infinity exist, are unique, and are normed spaces. We close with a variety of open questions suitable for advanced undergraduates, masters students, and doctoral students.

The Checkered Smocked Space and its Tangent Cone

Smocked metric spaces were first defined in arXiv:1906.03403 and it was proved that if a norm on the Euclidean space uniformly estimates the pseudometric of a smocked metric space, then the tangent cone at infinity is unique and is a norm vector space with that estimating norm. In this paper, we explicitly calculate the norm approximating the pseudometric of the checkered smocked space and find the tangent cone at infinity.
