Rank Bounds and PIT for $\Sigma^3 \Pi \Sigma \Pi^d$ circuits via a non-linear Edelstein-Kelly theorem

We prove a non-linear Edelstein-Kelly theorem for polynomials of constant degree, fully settling a stronger form of Conjecture 30 in Gupta (2014), and generalizing the main result of Peleg and Shpilka (STOC 2021) from quadratic polynomials to polynomials of any constant degree. As a consequence of our result, we obtain constant rank bounds for depth-4 circuits with top fanin 3 and constant bottom fanin (denoted $\Sigma^{3}\Pi\Sigma\Pi^{d}$ circuits) which compute the zero polynomial. This settles a stronger form of Conjecture 1 in Gupta (2014) when $k=3$, for any constant degree bound; additionally this also makes progress on Conjecture 28 in Beecken, Mittmann, and Saxena (Information \& Computation, 2013). Our rank bounds, when combined with Theorem 2 in Beecken, Mittmann, and Saxena (Information \& Computation, 2013) yield the first deterministic, polynomial time PIT algorithm for $\Sigma^{3}\Pi\Sigma\Pi^{d}$ circuits.

Strong Algebras and Radical Sylvester-Gallai Configurations

In this paper, we prove the following non-linear generalization of the classical Sylvester-Gallai theorem. Let $\mathbb{K}$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$, and $\mathcal{F}=\{F_1,\cdots,F_m\} \subset \mathbb{K}[x_1,\cdots,x_N]$ be a set of irreducible homogeneous polynomials of degree at most $d$ such that $F_i$ is not a scalar multiple of $F_j$ for $i\neq j$. Suppose that for any two distinct $F_i,F_j\in \mathcal{F}$, there is $k\neq i,j$ such that $F_k\in \mathrm{rad}(F_i,F_j)$. We prove that such radical SG configurations must be low dimensional. More precisely, we show that there exists a function $λ: \mathbb{N} \to \mathbb{N}$, independent of $\mathbb{K},N$ and $m$, such that any such configuration $\mathcal{F}$ must satisfy $$ \dim (\mathrm{span}_{\mathbb{K}}{\mathcal{F}}) \leq λ(d). $$ Our result confirms a conjecture of Gupta [Gup14, Conjecture 2] and generalizes the quadratic and cubic Sylvester-Gallai theorems of [S20,OS22]. Our result takes us one step closer towards the first deterministic polynomial time algorithm for the Polynomial Identity Testing (PIT) problem for depth-4 circuits of bounded top and bottom fanins. Our result, when combined with the Stillman uniformity type results of [AH20a,DLL19,ESS21], yields uniform bounds for several algebraic invariants such as projective dimension, Betti numbers and Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of ideals generated by radical SG configurations.

Geometric consistency of Manin's Conjecture

We conjecture that the exceptional set in Manin's Conjecture has an explicit geometric description. Our proposal includes the rational point contributions from any generically finite map with larger geometric invariants. We prove that this set is contained in a thin subset of rational points, verifying there is no counterexample to Manin's Conjecture which arises from an incompatibility of geometric invariants.

Manin's Conjecture and the Fujita invariant of finite covers

We prove a conjecture of Lehmann-Tanimoto about the behaviour of the Fujita invariant (or $a$-constant appearing in Manin's conjecture) under pull-back to generically finite covers. As a consequence we obtain results about geometric consistency of Manin's conjecture.

Manin's b-constant in families

We show that the $b$-constant (appearing in Manin's conjecture) is constant on very general fibers of a family of algebraic varieties. If the fibers of the family are uniruled, then we show that the $b$-constant is constant on general fibers.

Counterexamples to Mercat's Conjecture

For any n>3, we provide examples of curves lying on K3 surfaces and vector bundles on those curves which invalidate Mercat's conjecture for rank n bundles.
