Incommensurate Magnetic Ordered Phase with Enhanced Low-Temperature Magnetic Specific Heat in SmAu$_3$Al$_7$

Neutron scattering and muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) measurements on single-crystal SmAu$_3$Al$_7$ reveal magnetically ordered states associated with successive transitions at $T_{\rm N}$ = 2.8 K and $T^*$ = 0.9 K. Magnetic Bragg peaks appear below $T_{\rm N}$ with an incommensurate (IC) propagation vector ${\bf q}$ = (0.30, 0, 1.33). $μ$SR detects spontaneous internal fields below $T_{\rm N}$, and the spectral shape is consistent with the IC magnetic ordering. No anomalies are observed at $T^*$, indicating that the magnetic structure remains essentially unchanged below and above $T^*$. The magnetic order is revealed to be a spatially homogeneous long-range ordered state, rather than a partially disordered state proposed in earlier studies. The possible connection between the IC magnetic order and the enhanced low-temperature magnetic specific heat is discussed.

U(1) Dirac quantum spin liquid candidate in triangular-lattice antiferromagnet CeMgAl$_{11}$O$_{19}$

Quantum spin liquid represents an intriguing state where electron spins are highly entangled yet spin fluctuation persists even at 0 K. Recently, the hexaaluminates \textit{R}MgAl$_{11}$O$_{19}$ (\textit{R} = rare earth) have been proposed to be a platform for realizing the quantum spin liquid state with dominant Ising anisotropic correlations. Here, we report detailed low-temperature magnetic susceptibility, muon spin relaxation, and thermodynamic studies on the CeMgAl$_{11}$O$_{19}$ single crystal. Ising anisotropy is revealed by magnetic susceptibility measurements. Muon spin relaxation and ac susceptibility measurements rule out any long-range magnetic ordering or spin freezing down to 50 mK despite the onset of spin correlations below $\sim$0.8 K. Instead, the spins keep fluctuating at a rate of 1.0(2) MHz at 50 mK. Specific heat results indicate a gapless excitation with a power-law dependence on temperature, $C_m(T) \propto T^α$. The quasi-quadratic temperature dependence with $α$ = 2.28(4) in zero field and linear temperature dependence in 0.25 T support the possible realization of the U(1) Dirac quantum spin liquid state.

Fermi-liquid state in $T$*-type La$_{1-x/2}$Eu$_{1-x/2}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ revealed via element substitution effects on magnetism

Despite its unique structural features, the magnetism of single-layered cuprate with five oxygen coordination ($T$*-type structure) has not been investigated thus far. Here, we report the results of muon spin relaxation and magnetic susceptibility measurements to elucidate the magnetism of $T$*-type La$_{1-x/2}$Eu$_{1-x/2}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (LESCO) via magnetic Fe- and non-magnetic Zn-substitution. We clarified the inducement of the spin-glass (SG)-like magnetically ordered state in La$_{1-x/2}$Eu$_{1-x/2}$Sr$_x$Cu$_y$Fe$_{1-y}$O$_4$ with $x = 0.24 + y$, and the non-magnetic state in La$_{1-x/2}$Eu$_{1-x/2}$Sr$_x$Cu$_y$Zn$_{1-y}$O$_4$ with $x$ = 0.24 after the suppression of superconductivity for $y$ $\geq$ 0.025. The SG state lies below $\sim$7 K in a wide Sr concentration range between 0.19 and 0.34 in 5$\%$ Fe-substituted LESCO. The short-range SG state is consistent with that originating from the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction in a metallic state. Thus, the results provide the first evidence for Fermi liquid (FL) state in the pristine $T$*-type LESCO. Taking into account the results of an oxygen $K$-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurement $[$J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 89, 075002 (2020)$]$ reporting the actual hole concentrations in LESCO, our results demonstrate the existence of the FL state in a lower hole-concentration region, compared to that in $T$-type La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$. The emergence of the FL state in a lower hole-concentration region is possibly associated with a smaller charge transfer gap energy in the parent material with five oxygen coordination.

Muon spin relaxation in mixed perovskite (LaAlO$_3$)$_{x}$(SrAl$_{0.5}$Ta$_{0.5}$O$_3$)$_{1-x}$ with $x\simeq 0.3$

We report on muon spin relaxation ($μ^+$SR) measurements in a mixed perovskite compound, (LaAlO$_3$)$_{x}$(SrAl$_{0.5}$Ta$_{0.5}$O$_3$)$_{1-x}$ with $x\simeq 0.3$ (LSAT), which is widely used as a single-crystalline substrate for thin film deposition. In zero applied field (ZF), muon depolarization due to the distribution of nuclear dipole fields was observed in the temperature range from 4 K to 270 K. Interestingly, $μ^+$SR time spectra in ZF maintained a Gaussian-like feature over the entire range, while the depolarization rate exhibited a monotonic decrease with increasing temperature. This behavior may be attributed to the thermally activated diffusion of muons between a few adjacent sites within a confined space of the angstrom scale, where the motionally averaged local field that each muon experiences can remain non-zero and result in maintaining the Gaussian-like line shape. The spatial distribution of electrostatic potential at lattice interstices evaluated via density functional theory calculations suggests that such a restriction of muon diffusion paths can be caused by the random distribution of cations with different nominal valences in the mixed perovskite lattice.

Quantum Criticality in YbCu4Ni

We report on the quantum criticality of YbCu$_4$Ni as revealed by our combined micro- and macro-measurements. We determine the crystal structure of YbCu$_4$Ni with site mixing by neutron diffraction measurements, which suggests the possible presence of Kondo disorder. However, decreasing the local spin susceptibility distribution and the development of spin fluctuations below 10 K at ambient pressure by muon spin rotation and relaxation measurements suggests that YbCu4Ni exhibits quantum criticality. Therefore, our experimental results indicate that YbCu4Ni is a new material that exhibits quantum criticality under a zero magnetic field and ambient pressure.

Magnetic Instability of Pr3Ru4Sn13

We report on the quantum criticality of Pr$_3$Ru$_4$Sn$_{13}$ revealed by our new material research. Pr$_3$Ru$_4$Sn$_{13}$ has been synthesized by flux growth and characterized by single X-ray, powder X-ray, and powder neutron diffraction measurements. The compound adopts a Yb$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$-type structure with a cubic Pm$\bar{3}$n. From the magnetization at 1 T, the effective magnetic moment was estimated to be 3.58 $μ_B$ per Pr$^{3+}$, suggesting that the magnetism is mainly contributed by Pr$^{3+}$ ions. The specific heat and magnetization show an anomaly at $T_{N} = 7.5$ ~ K owing to the phase transition. The muon spin rotation and relaxation ($μ$SR) time spectra exhibit clear oscillations below $T_N$. This suggests that the phase is magnetically ordered. The volume fraction of the magnetic phase estimated from the initial asymmetry is around ten percent. In addition, spin fluctuations were observed at low temperatures. These results provide microscopic evidence that the material is closest to the antiferromagnetically quantum critical point with a partial order among Pr$_3$$T_4$Sn$_{13}$ ($T= $ Co, Ru, Rh).

Persistent spin dynamics in magnetically ordered honeycomb cobalt oxides

In the quest to find quantum spin liquids, layered cobalt oxides Na2Co2TeO6 and Na3Co2SbO6 have been proposed as promising candidates for approximating the Kitaev honeycomb model. Yet, their suitability has been thrown into question due to observed long-range magnetic order at low temperatures and indications of easy-plane, rather than Kitaev-type, spin anisotropy. Here we use muon spin relaxation to reveal an unexpected picture: contrary to the anticipated static nature of the long-range order, the systems show prevalent spin dynamics with spatially uneven distribution and varied correlation times. This underlines that the magnetic ground states cannot be solely described by the long-range order, suggesting a significant role of quantum fluctuations. Our findings not only shed new light on the complex physics of these systems but also underscore the need for a refined approach in the search for realizable quantum spin liquids.

Na-ion Dynamics in the Solid Solution Na$_{\rm x}$Ca$_{1- \rm x}$Cr$_2$O$_4$ Studied by Muon Spin Rotation and Neutron Diffraction

In this work we present systematic set of measurements carried out by muon spin rotation/relaxation ($μ^+$SR) and neutron powder diffraction (NPD) on the solid solution Na$_{\rm x}$Ca$_{1- \rm x}$Cr$_2$O$_4$. This study investigates Na-ion dynamics in the quasi-1D (Q1D) diffusion channels created by the honeycomb-like arrangement of CrO$_6$ octahedra, in the presence of defects introduced by Ca doping. With increasing Ca content, the size of the diffusion channels is enlarged, however, this effect does not enhance the Na ion mobility. Instead the overall diffusivity is hampered by the local defects and the Na hopping probability is lowered. The diffusion mechanism in Na$_{\rm x}$Ca$_{1- \rm x}$Cr$_2$O$_4$ was found to be interstitial and the activation energy as well as diffusion coefficient were determined for all the members of the solid solution.

Pyrochlore Oxide Hg2Os2O7 on Verge of Metal-Insulator Boundary

Semimetallic osmium pyrochlore oxide Cd2Os2O7 undergoes a magnetic transition to an all-in-all-out (AIAO)-type order at 227 K, followed by a crossover to an AIAO insulator at around 210 K. Here, we studied the isostructural and isoelectronic compound Hg2Os2O7 through thermodynamic measurements, muSR spectroscopy and neutron diffraction experiments. A similar magnetic transition, probably to an AIAO-type order, was observed at 88 K, while the resistivity showed a decrease at the transition and remained metallic down to 2 K. Thus, the ground state of Hg2Os2O7 is most likely an AIAO semimetal, which is analogous to the intermediate-temperature state of Cd2Os2O7. Hg2Os2O7 exists on the verge of the metal-insulator boundary on the metal side and provides an excellent platform for studying the electronic instability of 5d electrons with moderate electron correlations and strong spin-orbit interactions.

Dimensional reduction by geometrical frustration in a cubic antiferromagnet composed of tetrahedral clusters

Dimensionality is a critical factor in determining the properties of solids and is an apparent built-in character of the crystal structure. However, it can be an emergent and tunable property in geometrically frustrated spin systems. Here, we study the spin dynamics of the tetrahedral cluster antiferromagnet, pharmacosiderite, via muon spin resonance and neutron scattering. We find that the spin correlation exhibits a two-dimensional characteristic despite the isotropic connectivity of tetrahedral clusters made of spin 5/2 Fe3+ ions in the three-dimensional cubic crystal, which we ascribe to two-dimensionalisation by geometrical frustration based on spin wave calculations. Moreover, we suggest that even one-dimensionalisation occurs in the decoupled layers, generating low-energy and one-dimensional excitation modes, causing large spin fluctuation in the classical spin system. Pharmacosiderite facilitates studying the emergence of low-dimensionality and manipulating anisotropic responses arising from the dimensionality using an external magnetic field.

Extreme Suppression of Antiferromagnetic Order and Critical Scaling in a Two-Dimensional Random Quantum Magnet

Sr$_2$CuTeO$_6$ is a square-lattice Néel antiferromagnet with superexchange between first-neighbor $S=1/2$ Cu spins mediated by plaquette centered Te ions. Substituting Te by W, the affected impurity plaquettes have predominantly second-neighbor interactions, thus causing local magnetic frustration. Here we report a study of Sr$_2$CuTe$_{1-x}$W$_x$O$_6$ using neutron diffraction and $μ$SR techniques, showing that the Néel order vanishes already at $x = 0.025 \pm 0.005$. We explain this extreme order suppression using a two-dimensional Heisenberg spin model, demonstrating that a W-type impurity induces a deformation of the order parameter that decays with distance as $1/r^2$ at temperature $T=0$. The associated logarithmic singularity leads to loss of order for any $x>0$. Order for small $x>0$ and $T>0$ is induced by weak interplane couplings. In the nonmagnetic phase of Sr$_2$CuTe$_{1-x}$W$_x$O$_6$, the $μ$SR relaxation rate exhibits quantum critical scaling with a large dynamic exponent, $z \approx 3$, consistent with a random-singlet state.

Muon Spin Relaxation and fluctuating magnetism in the pseudogap phase of YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$

We report results of a muon spin relaxation study of slow magnetic fluctuations in the pseudogap phase of underdoped single-crystalline YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$, $y = 6.77$ and 6.83. The dependence of the dynamic muon spin relaxation rate on applied magnetic field yields the rms magnitude~$B\mathrm{_{loc}^{rms}}$ and correlation time~$τ_c$ of fluctuating local fields at muon sites. The observed relaxation rates do not decrease with decreasing temperature~$T$ below the pseudogap onset at $T^\ast$, as would be expected for a conventional magnetic transition; both $B\mathrm{_{loc}^{rms}}$ and $τ_c$ are roughly constant in the pseudogap phase down to the superconducting transition. Corresponding NMR relaxation rates are estimated to be too small to be observable. Our results put strong constraints on theories of the anomalous pseudogap magnetism in YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$.

Origin of magnetovolume effect in a cobaltite

The layered perovskite PrBaCo2O5.5+x demonstrates a strong negative thermal expansion (NTE) which holds potential for being fabricated into composites with zero thermal expansion. The NTE was found to be intimately associated with the spontaneous magnetic ordering, known as magnetovolume effect (MVE). Here we report with compelling evidences that the continuous-like MVE in PrBaCo2O5.5+x is intrinsically of discontinuous character, originating from an magnetoelectric transition from an antiferromagnetic insulating large-volume (AFILV) phase to a ferromagnetic metallic small-volume (FMSV) phase. Furthermore, the magnetoelectric effect (ME) shows high sensitivity to multiple external stimuli such as temperature, carrier doping, hydrostatic pressure, magnetic field etc. In contrast to the well-known ME such as colossal magnetoresistance and multiferroic effect which involve symmetry breaking of crystal structure, the ME in the cobaltite is purely isostructural. Our discovery provides a new pathway to realizing the ME as well as the NTE, which may find applications in new techniques.

Oxidation annealing effects on the spin-glass-like magnetism and appearance of superconductivity in T*-type La$_{1-x/2}$Eu$_{1-x/2}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (0.14 $\leq x \leq$ 0.28)

We investigated the magnetism and superconductivity in as-sintered (AS) and oxidation annealed (OA) T*-type La$_{1-x/2}$Eu$_{1-x/2}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (LESCO) with 0.14 $\leq x \leq$ 0.28 by the first comprehensive muon spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR), magnetic susceptibility, and electrical resistivity measurements. In OA superconducting samples, no evidence of magnetic order was observed, whereas AS semiconducting samples exhibited evidence of a disordered magnetic state in the measured temperature range between $\sim$4 K and $\sim$8 K. Therefore, the ground state in LESCO drastically varies with oxidation annealing and the magnetic phase competitively exists with the superconducting (SC) phase. The magnetic phase in the AS LESCO is quite robust against Sr doping, while the SC phase degrades with increasing $x$. A monotonous decrease of the SC transition temperature from 24.5 K in $x$ = 0.14 to 9.0 K in $x$ = 0.28 suggests the disappearance of the SC phase at $x$ $\sim$ 0.34. Furthermore, we clarified the simultaneous development of (quasi) static magnetism and the electrical resistivity at a low temperature in AS samples, suggesting the inducement of magnetism by the suppression of carrier mobility. The variation in magnetism due to annealing is discussed from a viewpoint of structural defects, which was previously reported from neutron diffraction measurements.

Development of Ferromagnetic Fluctuations in Heavily Overdoped (Bi,Pb)_2_Sr_2_CuO_6+delta_ Copper Oxides

We demonstrate the presence of ferromagnetic (FM) fluctuations in the superconducting and non-superconducting heavily overdoped regimes of high-temperature superconducting copper oxides, using (Bi,Pb)_2_Sr_2_CuO_6+delta_ (Bi-2201) single crystals. Magnetization curves exhibit a tendency to be saturated in high magnetic fields at low temperatures in the heavily overdoped crystals, which is probably a precursor phenomenon of a FM transition at a lower temperature. Muon spin relaxation detects the enhancement of spin fluctuations at high temperatures below 200 K. Correspondingly, the ab-plane resistivity follows a 4/3 power law in a wide temperature range, which is characteristic of metals with two-dimensional FM fluctuations due to itinerant electrons. As the Wilson ratio evidences the enhancement of spin fluctuations with hole doping in the heavily overdoped regime, it is concluded that two-dimensional FM fluctuations reside in the heavily overdoped Bi-2201 cuprates, which is probably related to the decrease in the superconducting transition temperature in the heavily overdoped cuprates.

Local spin structure of the $α$-RuCl$_3$ honeycomb-lattice magnet observed via muon spin rotation/relaxation

We report a muon spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) study of single-crystalline samples of the $α$-RuCl$_3$ honeycomb magnet, which is presumed to be a model compound for the Kitaev-Heisenberg interaction. It is inferred from magnetic susceptibility and specific-heat measurements that the present samples exhibit successive magnetic transitions at different critical temperatures $T_{\rm N}$ with decreasing temperature, eventually falling into the $T_{\rm N}=7$ K antiferromagnetic (7 K) phase that has been observed in only single-crystalline specimens with the least stacking fault. Via $μ$SR measurements conducted under a zero external field, we show that such behavior originates from a phase separation induced by the honeycomb plane stacking fault, yielding multiple domains with different $T_{\rm N}$'s. We also perform $μ$SR measurements under a transverse field in the paramagnetic phase to identify the muon site from the muon-Ru hyperfine parameters. Based on a comparison of the experimental and calculated internal fields at the muon site for the two possible spin structures inferred from neutron diffraction data, we suggest a modulated zig-zag spin structure for the 7 K phase, with the amplitude of the ordered magnetic moment being significantly reduced from that expected for the orbital quenched spin-1/2 state.

Magnetic Properties of One-Dimensional Quantum Spin System Rb2Cu2Mo3O12 Studied by Muon Spin Relaxation

Magnetic properties of a one-dimensional frustrated quantum spin system Rb2Cu2Mo3O12 is investigated by the muon spin relaxation (muSR) technique. Although this system shows an incommensurate spin correlation in neutron scattering, it has not yet been determined whether the ground state reaches to a nonmagnetic spin-singlet state or not. In this study, our zero-field (ZF) muSR result undoubtedly reveals a nonmagnetic ground state, which establishes formation of the nonmagnetic incommensurate spin-singlet state in combination of the previous neutron scattering study. Furthermore, we found that the internal field is slightly enhanced below ~7 K. This temperature dependence resembles that of electric polarization under the magnetic field reported recently, indicating a possibility that a small change occurs even under ZF. In longitudinal-field measurements, a fast fluctuation around a narrowing region is observed. This relaxation is expected to reflect characteristics of formation of the spin-singlet state.

Structural anomalies and short-range magnetic correlations in the orbitally degenerated system Sr$_2$VO$_4$

We report on the electronic ground state of a layered perovskite vanadium oxide Sr$_2$VO$_4$ studied by the combined use of synchrotron radiation x-ray diffraction (SR-XRD) and muon spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) techniques, where $μ$SR measurements were extended down to 30 mK. We found an intermediate orthorhombic phase between $T_{\rm c2} \sim$~130 K and $T_{\rm c1} \sim$~100 K, whereas a tetragonal phase appears for $T > T_{\rm c2}$ and $T < T_{\rm c1}$. The absence of long-range magnetic order was confirmed by $μ$SR at the reentrant tetragonal phase below $T_{\rm c1}$, where the relative enhancement in the $c$-axis length versus that of the $a$-axis length was observed. However, no clear indication of the lowering of the tetragonal lattice symmetry with superlattice modulation, which is expected in the orbital order state with superstructure of $d_{yz}$ and $d_{zx}$ orbitals, was observed by SR-XRD below $T_{\rm c1}$. Instead, it was inferred from $μ$SR that a magnetic state developed below $T_{\rm c0} \sim$~10 K, which was characterized by the highly inhomogeneous and fluctuating local magnetic fields down to 30 mK. We argue that the anomalous magnetic ground state below $T_{\rm c0}$ originates from the coexistence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic correlations.
