The spectra of polynomials in free (semi)circular operators

We show that any $L^2$-bounded rational function in free semicircular random variables is a bounded operator, which implies the coincidence of the usual spectrum and $L^2$-spectrum for rational functions. Based on this observation, we also compute the spectra of several polynomials in free circular random variables.

Double $q$-Wigner Chaos and the Fourth Moment

In this paper, we prove the Fourth Moment Theorem for sequences of (noncommutative) random variables given as sums of two stochastic integrals in two different parity orders of chaos, both in the free Wigner chaos setting and a $q$-Gaussian generalization. Specifically, we prove that convergence to the appropriate central limit distribution is mediated entirely by the behavior of the first four (mixed) moments of the two stochastic integrals, which in turn controls the $L^2$ norms of partial integral contractions of those kernels. The key step in both the free and $q$-Gaussian settings is a polarization identity for fourth cumulants of sums which holds only when the two terms have differing parities. These results are analogous to the recent preprint Fourth-Moment Theorems for Sums of Multiple Integrals by Basse-O'Connor, Kramer-Bang, and Svedsen in the classical Wiener-Itô chaos setting.

Operator-valued Khintchine inequality for $ε$-free semicircles

We exhibit several bounds for operator norms of the sum of $ε$-free semicircular random variables introduced in the paper of Speicher and Wysoczański. In particular, using the first and second largest eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix $ε$, we show analogs of the operator-valued Khintchine-type inequality obtained by Haagerup and Pisier.

The strong Haagerup inequality for q-circular systems

Together with Speicher, in 2007 the first author proved the strong Haagerup inequality for operator norms of homogeneous holomorphic polynomials in freely independent $\mathscr{R}$-diagonal elements (including in particular circular random variables); the inequality improved the bound from the original Haagerup inequality to grow with $\sqrt{n}$, rather than linearly in $n$, on homogeneous polynomials of degree $n$. In this paper, we prove a similar inequality for $q$-circular systems for $|q|<1$, generalizing the free case when $q=0$. In particular, we prove the strong Haagerup inequality for systems exhibiting neither free independence nor $\mathscr{R}$-diagonality. As an application, we prove a strong ultracontractivity theorem for the $q$-Ornstein--Uhlenbeck semigroup, and prove sharp rates for the Haagerup and ultracontractive inequalities.

A note on free divergence-free vector fields

We exhibit an orthonormal basis of cyclic gradients and a (non-orthogonal) basis of the homogeneous free divergence-free vector field on the full Fock space and determine the dimension of Voiculescu's free divergence-free vector field of degree k or less. Moreover, we also give a concrete formula for the orthogonal projection onto the space of cyclic gradients as well as the free Leray projection.

A short note on strong convergence of $q$-Gaussians

In this note, we prove strong convergence of $q$-Gaussians with respect to a parameter $q$, which implies the spectrum of any self-adjoint non-commutative polynomial in $q$-Gaussians is continuously deformed with respect to $q$. With Bożejko's Haagerup-type inequality, we follow Brannan's approach to proving the asymptotic strong convergence of the free orthogonal quantum group.

A dual and conjugate system for $q$-Gaussians for all $q$

We provide a concrete formula for a dual system as well as for a conjugate system of $q$-Gaussians represented on the $q$-deformed Fock space. Moreover, using this formula, we prove the existence of a free Gibbs potential and that the non-microstates free Fisher information is finite for any $q$ with $-1<q<1$, which is an improvement on a previous result of Y. Dabrowski. We also indicate how our results can be extended to the more general setting of mixed $q_{ij}$-relations.

Convergence for noncommutative rational functions evaluated in random matrices

One of the main applications of free probability is to show that for appropriately chosen independent copies of $d$ random matrix models, any noncommutative polynomial in these $d$ variables has a spectral distribution that converges asymptotically and can be described with the help of free probability. This paper aims to show that this can be extended to noncommutative rational functions, answering an open question by Roland Speicher. This paper also provides a noncommutative probability approach to approximating the free field. At the algebraic level, its construction relies on the approximation by generic matrices. On the other hand, it admits many embeddings in the algebra of operators affiliated with a $II_1$ factor. A consequence of our result is that, as soon as the generators admit a random matrix model, the approximation of any self-adjoint noncommutative rational function by generic matrices can be upgraded at the level of convergence in distribution.

A characterization of rationality for operators in free semicircular elements

Realizing free semicircular elements on the full Fock space, we prove an equivalence between rationality of operators obtained from them and finiteness of the rank of their commutators with right annihilation operators. This is an analogue of the result for the reduced $C^*$-algebra of the free group by G. Duchamp and C. Reutenauer which was extended by PA. Linnel to densely defined unbounded operators affiliated with the free group factor. Although their result was motivated from quantized calculus in noncommutative geometry, we state our results in terms of free probability theory.
