Sensitivity of a low-shear heliotron configuration to localised ferrite-steel perturbations

The influence of ferritic steel on low-shear stellarator/heliotron magnetic configurations is investigated for the Heliotron J device using a point dipole magnetisation model. By numerically evaluating ferritic steel plates assumed at several locations inside the Heliotron J vacuum vessel, the changes in the rotational transform and magnetic island width are shown to be sensitive to the installation location. This location sensitivity arises from the toroidal variation of poloidal mode coupling between the background nonaxisymmetric field and ferritic-steel perturbation, rather than being determined solely by the perturbation amplitude. The resulting mode coupling can enhance the resonant vacuum magnetic perturbation at specific locations. Ferritic steel plates placed on the outer side of a straight section produce the most significant changes in the magnetic topology and exhibit the highest sensitivity to violations of the $M=4$ toroidal periodicity. Additionally, we show that appropriate arrangements of passive magnetic dipoles can reduce the effective helical ripple while preserving the vacuum magnetic well depth in Heliotron J, and can induce a stellarator-asymmetric boundary perturbation in low-field experiments.

Why epithelial cells collectively move against a traveling signal wave

The response of cell populations to external stimuli plays a central role in biological mechanical processes such as epithelial wound healing and developmental morphogenesis. Wave-like propagation of a signal of ERK MAP kinase has been shown to direct collective migration in one direction; however, the mechanism based on continuum mechanics under a traveling wave is not fully understood. To elucidate how the traveling wave of the ERK kinase signal directs collective migration, we constructed the mechanical model of the epithelial cell monolayer by considering the signal-dependent coordination of contractile stress and cellular orientation. The proposed model was studied by using an optogenetically-controlled cell system where we found that local signal activation induces changes in cell density and orientation with the direction of propagation. The net motion of the cell population occurred relative to the wave, and the migration velocity showed a maximum in resonance with the velocity of the ERK signal wave. The presented mechanical model was further validated in \textit{in vitro} wound healing process.

Direct measurement of single soft lipid nano-tubes: nano-scale information extracted in non-invasive manner

We investigated the dynamics of single soft nano-tubes of phospholipids to extract nano-scale information such as size of tube, which are several tens to hundreds of nano-meters thick. The scaling law of the nano-tube dynamics in quasi-2-dimensional space was revealed to be constituent with that of a polymer. The dynamic properties of the tubes obtained from direct observation by fluorescent microscopy, such as their persistence length, enable us to access the nano-scale characteristics through a simple elastic model of the membrane. The present methodology should be applicable to the nano-sized membrane structure in living cells.
