Incommensurate Magnetic Ordered Phase with Enhanced Low-Temperature Magnetic Specific Heat in SmAu$_3$Al$_7$

Neutron scattering and muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) measurements on single-crystal SmAu$_3$Al$_7$ reveal magnetically ordered states associated with successive transitions at $T_{\rm N}$ = 2.8 K and $T^*$ = 0.9 K. Magnetic Bragg peaks appear below $T_{\rm N}$ with an incommensurate (IC) propagation vector ${\bf q}$ = (0.30, 0, 1.33). $μ$SR detects spontaneous internal fields below $T_{\rm N}$, and the spectral shape is consistent with the IC magnetic ordering. No anomalies are observed at $T^*$, indicating that the magnetic structure remains essentially unchanged below and above $T^*$. The magnetic order is revealed to be a spatially homogeneous long-range ordered state, rather than a partially disordered state proposed in earlier studies. The possible connection between the IC magnetic order and the enhanced low-temperature magnetic specific heat is discussed.

Highly fluctuating double-$q$ magnetic order in the van der Waals metal CeTe$_3$

CeTe$_3$ is a van der Waals antiferromagnet composed of magnetic [CeTe]$^+$ layers coupled to highly conducting Te$^{0.5-}$ square nets. Its simple quasi-two-dimensional electronic structure and cleavable nature make it an appealing platform for exploring correlated magnetism in reduced dimensions. To clarify the nature of its low-temperature state, we performed single-crystal neutron diffraction down to 0.3 K, complemented by scanning tunneling microscopy. A magnetic transition near 1.5 K gives rise to incommensurate Bragg peaks at $q_{\pm}\sim(\pm0.17,0,0.31)$, consistent with a double-$q$ magnetic order whose moments are predominantly aligned along the $c$ axis. The strongly reduced ordered moment is consistent with enhanced quantum fluctuations driven by $c$-$f$ hybridization, while the deviation of the propagation vectors from simple nesting suggests a coupling to residual charge-density-wave instabilities of the quasi-one-dimensional Te-derived bands. These results indicate that CeTe$_3$ hosts a correlated magnetic ground state where spin and itinerant charge degrees of freedom are intimately linked in the van der Waals limit.

Directional selection of field-induced phases by weak anisotropy in triangular-lattice K$_2$Mn(SeO$_3$)$_2$

Triangular-lattice systems host a variety of ground states, ranging from quantum spin liquids to magnetically ordered phases, the latter of which can exhibit a sequence of magnetic phase transitions under applied magnetic fields. Here, we report magnetic and thermodynamic measurements, combined with powder and single-crystal neutron diffraction, on a high-spin, nearly isotropic Mn$^{2+}$ triangular-lattice system K$_2$Mn(SeO$_3$)$_2$. The compound undergoes long-range magnetic ordering below $T_\mathrm{N} \sim 4$~K in zero field. Contrary to expectations for an ideal Heisenberg system, the compound adopts an up-down-zero (UD0) magnetic structure down to the lowest temperature (0.05 K), rather than the commonly expected Y-type structure. This UD0 state is, however, highly sensitive to external magnetic fields. For fields applied along the $c$ axis, it is readily destabilized and replaced by the Y-type structure, followed by an up-up-down (UUD) phase corresponding to the 1/3 magnetization plateau. In contrast, when the field is applied within the triangular plane, the system evolves into a canted Y state at a higher critical field. These results reveal that weak anisotropy, though small in magnitude, exerts a strongly orientation-dependent influence, playing a key role in selecting the field-induced phases in this frustrated magnet.

Magnetic Order of Dresselhaus-type Antiferromagnet EuIr$_4$In$_2$Ge$_4$ Studied by Single Crystal Neutron Diffraction

The magnetic order of EuIr$_4$In$_2$Ge$_4$, which crystallizes in a Dresselhaus-type noncentrosymmetric tetragonal structure, was investigated using two complementary single-crystal neutron diffraction approaches. Time-of-flight single-crystal diffraction reveals antiferromagnetic Bragg reflections with propagation vector $q = (1, 0, 0)$ below the Néel temperature $T_{\rm N}$ = 2.5 K, indicating a breaking of body-centered translational symmetry. Polarized neutron diffraction on a triple-axis spectrometer demonstrates that the ordered Eu$^{2+}$ $4f$ moments lie within the basal plane and form a collinear antiferromagnetic structure with antiparallel alignment between corner and body-center sites. Despite the Dresselhaus-type spin splitting in the conduction bands, the magnetic order remains simple, implying weak coupling between localized moments and itinerant electrons.

Easy-plane multi-$\mathbf{q}$ magnetic ground state of Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$

Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$ is a potential Kitaev magnet with a monoclinic layered crystal structure. Recent investigations of the $C_3$-symmetric sister compound Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ have uncovered a unique triple-$\mathbf{q}$ magnetic ground state, as opposed to a single-$\mathbf{q}$ (zigzag) one, prompting us to examine the influence of the reduced structural symmetry of Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$ on its ground state. Neutron diffraction data obtained on a twin-free crystal reveal that the ground state remains a multi-$\mathbf{q}$ state, despite the system's strong in-plane anisotropy. This robustness of multi-$\mathbf{q}$ orders suggests that they are driven by a common mechanism in the honeycomb cobaltates, such as higher-order magnetic interactions. Spin-polarized neutron diffraction results show that the ordered moments are entirely in-plane, with each staggered component orthogonal to the propagating wave vector. The inferred ground state favors a so-called XXZ easy-plane anisotropic starting point for the microscopic model over a Kitaev one, and features unequal ordered moments reduced by strong quantum fluctuations.

Cycloidal Magnetic Ordering in Noncentrosymmetric EuIrGe$_3$

Successive magnetic phase transitions at $T_{\text{N}}$=12.2 K, $T_{\text{N}}^{\;\prime}$=7.0 K, and $T_{\text{N}}^{\;*}$=5.0 K in EuIrGe$_3$, an intermetallic compound with a body centered tetragonal lattice belonging to a polar space group $I4mm$, has been investigated by neutron diffraction and resonant X-ray diffraction. It is shown that EuIrGe$_3$ exhibits an incommensurate longitudinal sinusoidal order with $q\sim (0, 0, 0.792)$ and $m_{q} \parallel c\text{-axis}$ in the high temperature phase ($T_{\text{N}}^{\;\prime}< T < T_{\text{N}}$), which changes to a cycloidal order with $q=(δ', 0, 0.8)$ ($δ'\sim 0.017$) and $m_{q} \parallel ac\text{-plane}$ in the intermediate phase ($T_{\text{N}}^{\;*} < T < T_{\text{N}}^{\;\prime}$). In the low temperature phase ($T < T_{\text{N}}^{\;*}$), the cycloidal plane rotates by $45^{\circ}$ to have $q=(δ, δ, 0.8)$ ($δ\sim 0.012$). It is also pointed out that the X-ray scattering amplitude from odd-parity magnetic quadrupole due to the polar environment interfere with that from normal even-parity magnetic dipole in the magnetic ordered phase.

Superconductivity-driven ferromagnetism and spin manipulation using vortices in the magnetic superconductor EuRbFe4As4

Magnetic superconductors are specific materials exhibiting two antagonistic phenomena, superconductivity and magnetism, whose mutual interaction induces various emergent phenomena, such as the reentrant superconducting transition associated with the suppression of superconductivity around the magnetic transition temperature (Tm), highlighting the impact of magnetism on superconductivity. In this study, we report the experimental observation of the ferromagnetic order induced by superconducting vortices in the high-critical-temperature (high-Tc) magnetic superconductor EuRbFe4As4. Although the ground state of the Eu2+ moments in EuRbFe4As4 is helimagnetism below Tm, neutron diffraction and magnetization experiments show a ferromagnetic hysteresis of the Eu2+ spin alignment. We demonstrate that the direction of the Eu2+ moments is dominated by the distribution of pinned vortices based on the critical state model. Moreover, we demonstrate the manipulation of spin texture by controlling the direction of superconducting vortices, which can help realize spin manipulation devices using magnetic superconductors.

Magnetic structures and phase transitions of A-site Ordered Double-Perovskite SmBaMn2O6

Magnetic structures and the relationship between spin and charge-orbital orderings of an A-site ordered double-perovskite manganite SmBaMn2O6, an anticipated multiferroic material, were investigated by means of neutron diffraction. The spin arrangement in MnO2 planes perpendicular to the c axis is revealed to be the same as that in the A-site disordered half-doped manganites CE-type but the stacking pattern is found to be different displaying a unique twofold period. The temperature dependence of the superlattice magnetic and nuclear reflections clarifies that the antiferromagnetic spin ordering occurs at a temperature slightly lower than the temperature at which a rearrangement of the charge-orbital orderings occurs. The result evidences that the rearrangement leads the spin ordering. The intensities of the magnetic reflections are found to change across Tf = 10 K, suggesting a spin-flop by 90 [deg.] while keeping the Mn spin ordering pattern unchanged.

Hybridization-gap Formation and Superconductivity in the Pressure-induced Semimetallic Phase of the Excitonic Insulator Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$

The excitonic insulator Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$ experiences a first-order structural transition under pressure from rippled to flat layer-structure at Ps = 3 GPa, which drives the system from an almost zero-gap semiconductor to a semimetal. The pressure-induced semimetal, with lowering temperature, experiences a transition to another semimetal with a partial-gap of 0.1-0.2 eV, accompanied with a monoclinic distortion analogous to that occurs at the excitonic transition below Ps. We argue that the partial-gap originates primarily from a symmetry-allowed hybridization of Ta-conduction and Ni-valence bands due to the lattice distortion, indicative of the importance of electron-lattice coupling. The transition is suppressed with increasing pressure to Pc = 8 GPa. Superconductivity with a maximum Tsc = 1.2 K emerges around Pc, likely mediated by strongly electron-coupled soft phonons. The electron-lattice coupling is as important ingredient as the excitonic instability in Ta2NiSe5.

Charge-Density-Wave Order and Multiple Magnetic Transitions in Divalent Europium Compound EuAl$_4$

Multiple transition phenomena in divalent Eu compound EuAl$_4$ with the tetragonal structure were investigated via the single-crystal time-of-flight neutron Laue technique. At 30.0 K below a charge-density-wave (CDW) transition temperature of $T_{\rm CDW}$ = 140 K, superlattice peaks emerge near nuclear Bragg peaks described by an ordering vector $q_{\rm CDW}$=(0 0 $δ_c$) with $δ_c{\sim}$0.19. In contrast, magnetic peaks appear at $q_2 = (δ_2 δ_2 0)$ with $δ_2$ = 0.085 in a magnetic-ordered phase at 13.5 K below $T_{\rm N1}$ = 15.4 K. By further cooling to below $T_{\rm N3}$ = 12.2 K, the magnetic ordering vector changes into $q_1 = (δ_1 0 0)$ with $δ_1$ = 0.17 at 11.5 K and slightly shifts to $δ_1$ = 0.194 at 4.3 K. No distinct change in the magnetic Bragg peak was detected at $T_{\rm N2}$=13.2 K and $T_{\rm N4}$=10.0 K. The structural modulation below $T_{\rm CDW}$ with $q_{\rm CDW}$ is characterized by the absence of the superlattice peak in the (0 0 $l$) axis. As a similar CDW transition was observed in SrAl$_4$, the structural modulation with $q_{\rm CDW}$ could be mainly ascribed to the displacement of Al ions within the tetragonal $ab$-plane. Complex magnetic transitions are in stark contrast to a simple collinear magnetic structure in isovalent EuGa$_4$. This could stem from different electronic structures with the CDW transition between two compounds.

Lattice dynamics coupled to charge and spin degrees of freedom in the molecular dimer-Mott insulator $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu[N(CN)$_{2}$]Cl

Inelastic neutron scattering measurements on the molecular dimer-Mott insulator $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu[N(CN)$_{2}$]Cl reveal a phonon anomaly in a wide temperature range. Starting from $T_{\rm ins}\sim50$-$60$ K where the charge gap opens, the low-lying optical phonon modes become overdamped upon cooling towards the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature $T_\mathrm{N} = 27$ K, where also a ferroelectric ordering at $T_{\rm FE} \approx T_{\rm N}$ occurs. Conversely, the phonon damping becomes small again when spins and charges are ordered below $T_\mathrm{N}$, while no change of the lattice symmetry is observed across $T_\mathrm{N}$ in neutron diffraction measurements. We assign the phonon anomalies to structural fluctuations coupled to charge and spin degrees of freedom in the BEDT-TTF molecules.

A molecular diamond lattice antiferromagnet as a Dirac semimetal candidate

The ground state of a molecular diamond-lattice compound (ET)Ag$_4$(CN)$_5$ is investigated by the magnetization and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. We found that the system exhibits antiferromagnetic long-range ordering with weak ferromagnetism at a high temperature of 102 K owing to the strong electron correlation. The spin susceptibility is well fitted into the diamond-lattice Heisenberg model with a nearest neighbor exchange coupling of 230 K, indicating the less frustrated interactions. The transition temperature elevates up to $\sim$195 K by applying pressure of 2 GPa, which records the highest temperature among organic molecular magnets. The first-principles band calculation suggests that the system is accessible to a three-dimensional topological semimetal with nodal Dirac lines, which has been extensively searched for a half-filling diamond lattice.

Unique Helical Magnetic Order and Field-Induced Phase in Trillium Lattice Antiferromagnet EuPtSi

Magnetic transition phenomena in cubic chiral antiferromagnet EuPtSi with $T_{\rm N}$=4.0~K were investigated by means of single crystal neutron diffraction. At 0.3~K in the ground state, magnetic peaks emerge at positions represented by an ordering vector ${q}_{1}$=$(0.2, 0.3, 0)$ and its cyclic permutation. Upon heating, an additional magnetic peak splitting with hysteresis was uncovered at around $T^*_{\rm N}{\sim}$2.5~K, indicating the presence of a first-order commensurate-incommensurate transition with ${q}^*_{1}$=$(0.2, 0.3, δ)$ ($δ_{\rm max}{\simeq}$0.04) at $T^*_{\rm N}$. A half-polarized neutron scattering experiment for polarization parallel to the scattering vector revealed that polarization antiparallel to the scattering vector has stronger intensity in both magnetic phases. This feature clarifies the single chiral character of the helical structure with moments lying perpendicular to the ordering vector in both ordered states. Under a vertical magnetic field of 1.2~T for ${B}{\parallel}$[1,1,1] at 1.9~K entering into the so-called $A$ phase, magnetic peaks form characteristic hexagonal patterns in the equatorial scattering plane around nuclear peaks. An ordering vector ${q}_{A}{\simeq}({\pm}0.09, {\pm}0.20, {\mp}0.28)$ of the $A$-phase has similar periodic length as $q_{1}$, and could be the hallmark of a formation of skyrmion lattice in EuPtSi.

Neutron-scattering study of yttrium iron garnet

The nuclear and magnetic structure and full magnon dispersions of yttrium iron garnet Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ have been studied by neutron scattering. The refined nuclear structure is distorted to a trigonal space group of $R\bar{3}$. The highest-energy dispersion extends up to 86 meV. The observed dispersions are reproduced by a simple model with three nearest-neighbor-exchange integrals between 16$a$ (octahedral) and 24$d$ (tetrahedral) sites, $J_{aa}$, $J_{ad}$, and $J_{dd}$, which are estimated to be 0.00$\pm$0.05, $-$2.90$\pm$0.07, and $-$0.35$\pm$0.08 meV, respectively. The lowest-energy dispersion below 14 meV exhibits a quadratic dispersion as expected from ferromagnetic magnons. The imaginary part of $q$-integrated dynamical spin susceptibility $χ$"($E$) exhibits a square-root energy-dependence in the low energies. The magnon density of state is estimated from the $χ$"($E$) obtained on an absolute scale. The value is consistent with a single polarization mode for the magnon branch expected theoretically.

Mn$_2$VAl Heusler alloy thin films: Appearance of antiferromagnetism and an exchange bias in a layered structure with Fe

Mn$_2$VAl Heusler alloy films were epitaxially grown on MgO(100) single crystal substrates by means of ultra-high-vacuum magnetron sputtering. A2 and L2$_1$ type Mn$_2$VAl order was controlled by the deposition temperatures. A2-type Mn$_2$VAl films showed no spontaneous magnetization and L2$_1$-type Mn$_2$VAl films showed ferrimagnetic behavior with a maximum saturation magnetization of 220 emu/cm$^3$ at room temperature. An antiferromagnetic reflection was observed with neutron diffraction at room temperature for an A2-type Mn$_2$VAl film deposited at 400$^\circ$C. A bilayer sample of the antiferromagnetic A2 Mn$_2$VAl and Fe showed an exchange bias of 120 Oe at 10 K.

Magnetic structure of divalent europium compound EuGa$_4$ studied by single crystal time-of-flight neutron diffraction

The magnetic structure of the intermetallic compound EuGa$_4$ was investigated using single-crystal neutron diffraction with the time-of-flight (TOF) Laue technique on the new diffractometer SENJU at MLF of J-PARC. In spite of high neutron absorption of Eu, a vast number of diffraction spots were observed without isotope enrichment. The magnetic reflections were appeared at the positions with the diffraction indices of $h+k+l{\neq}2n$ below 16 K, indicating that the ordering vector is ${\bf q}=(0~0~0)$. Continuous evolution of magnetic reflection intensity below $T_{\rm N}$ follows a squared Brillouin function for $S$=7/2. By adopting a wavelength-dependent absorption collection, the magnetic structure of EuGa$_4$ was revealed that a nearly full magnetic moment of 6.4$~μ_{\rm B}$ of Eu lies within the basal plane of the lattice. The present study reveals a well-localized divalent Eu magnetism in EuGa$_4$ and demonstrates a high ability of SENJU to investigate materials with high neutron absorption.

Spin state of Co$^{3+}$ in LaCo$_{1-x}$Rh$_{x}$O$_{3}$ investigated by structural phenomena

Neutron diffraction for a polycrystalline sample of LaCo$_{0.8}$Rh$_{0.2}$O$_{3}$ and synchrotron x-ray diffraction for polycrystalline samples of LaCo$_{0.9}$Rh$_{0.1}$O$_{3}$ and LaCo$_{0.8}$Rh$_{0.2}$O$_{3}$ have been carried out in order to investigate the structural properties related with the spin state of Co$^{3+}$ ions. We have found that the values of the Co(Rh)-O bond lengths in the Co(Rh)O$_{6}$ octahedron of LaCo$_{0.8}$Rh$_{0.2}$O$_{3}$ are nearly identical at 10 K. The lattice volume for the Rh$^{3+}$ substituted samples decreases with the thermal expansion coefficient similar to that of LaCoO$_{3}$ from room temperature, and ceases to decrease around 70 K. These experimental results favor a mixed state consisting of the high-spin-state and low-spin-state Co$^{3+}$ ions, and suggest that the high-spin-state Co$^{3+}$ ions are thermally excited in addition to those pinned by the substituted Rh$^{3+}$ ions.
