Direct laser micromachining of superconducting terahertz Josephson plasma emitters

We demonstrate a rapid, maskless fabrication method for superconducting terahertz Josephson plasma emitters (JPEs) based on direct ultraviolet laser micromachining of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi-2212) single crystals. Although machining debris is formed near the processed regions, uniform stacks of intrinsic Josephson junctions are preserved inside the crystal, enabling stable terahertz emission. Devices fabricated with Ag, Cu, and Cr electrodes all exhibited terahertz radiation, with Cu electrodes showing performance comparable to Ag while offering a low-cost alternative. Spectroscopic and polarization analyses indicate that the emitted radiation is elliptically polarized and dominated by the geometrical cavity resonance mode. Structural and electrical characterizations reveal that the machining width and depth are not limited by the optical spot size but are governed by the anisotropic thermal conductivity of Bi-2212, consistent with a thermally dominated laser ablation process. This direct laser micromachining approach provides a fast and versatile fabrication technique for JPEs and is broadly applicable to superconducting electronics and terahertz devices.

Simulation of Collective Excitations in the Stack of Long Josephson Junctions

The phase dynamics of the stack of long Josephson junctions has been studied. Both inductive and capacitive couplings between Josephson junctions have been taken into account in the calculations. The IV--curve, bias current dependence of radiation power and dynamics of each JJs of the stack have been investigated. The coexistence of the charge traveling wave and fluxon states has been observed. This state can be considered as a new collective excitation in the system of coupled Josephson junctions. We demonstrate that the observed collective excitation leads to the decreasing of radiation power from the system.

Shift of Shapiro Step in High-Temperature Superconductor

Influence of the charge imbalance effect on the system of intrinsic Josephson junctions of high temperature superconductors under external electromagnetic radiation are investigated. We demonstrate that the charge imbalance is responsible for a slope in the Shapiro step in the IV-characteristic. The nonperiodic boundary conditions shift the Shapiro step from the canonical position which determined by a frequency of external radiation. We also demonstrate how the system parameters affect on the shift of Shapiro step.
