Dwarf Novae in the Shortest Orbital Period Regime: I. A New Short Period Dwarf Nova, OT J055717+683226

We report the observation of a new dwarf nova, OT J055717+683226, during its first-ever recorded superoutburst in December 2006. Our observation shows that this object is an SU UMa-type dwarf nova having a very short superhump period of 76.67+/- 0.03 min (0.05324+/-0.00002 d). The next superoutburst was observed in March 2008. The recurrence time of superoutbursts (supercycle) is, hence, estimated to be ~480 d. The supercycle is much shorter than those of WZ Sge-type dwarf novae having supercycles of >~ 10 yr, which are a major population of dwarf novae in the shortest orbital period regime (<~85 min). Using a hierarchical cluster analysis, we identified seven groups of dwarf novae in the shortest orbital period regime. We identified a small group of objects that have short supercycles, small outburst amplitudes, and large superhump period excesses, compared with those of WZ Sge stars. OT J055717+683226 probably belongs to this group.

Discovery of Multiple High-Velocity Narrow Circumstellar Na I D Lines in Nova V1280 Sco

We discovered multiple high-velocity (ranging from -900 to -650 km/s) and narrow (FWHM = 15 km/s) absorption components corresponding to both the D2 and the D1 lines of Na I on a high dispersion spectrum of V1280 Sco observed on 2009 May 9 (UT), 814 d after the V-band maximum. Subsequent observations carried out on 2009 June and July confirmed at least 11 distinct absorption components in both systems. Some components had deepened during the two months period while their HWHMs and wavelengths remained nearly constant. We suggest these high velocity components originate in cool clumpy gas clouds moving on the line of sight, produced in interactions between pre-existing cool circumstellar gas and high velocity gas ejected in the nova explosion. The optical region spectrum of V1280 Sco in 2009 is dominated by the continuum radiation and exhibits no forbidden line characterizing the nebular phase of typical novae. Permitted Fe II lines show doubly peaked emission profiles and some strong Fe II lines are accompanied by a blue shifted (about -255 km/s) absorption component. However, no high-velocity and narrow components corresponding to those of Na I could be detected in Fe II lines nor in the Balmer lines. The 255 km/s low velocity absorption component is most probably originating in the wind from the nova.

Survey of Period Variations of Superhumps in SU UMa-Type Dwarf Novae

We systematically surveyed period variations of superhumps in SU UMa-type dwarf novae based on newly obtained data and past publications. In many systems, the evolution of superhump period are found to be composed of three distinct stages: early evolutionary stage with a longer superhump period, middle stage with systematically varying periods, final stage with a shorter, stable superhump period. During the middle stage, many systems with superhump periods less than 0.08 d show positive period derivatives. Contrary to the earlier claim, we found no clear evidence for variation of period derivatives between superoutburst of the same object. We present an interpretation that the lengthening of the superhump period is a result of outward propagation of the eccentricity wave and is limited by the radius near the tidal truncation. We interpret that late stage superhumps are rejuvenized excitation of 3:1 resonance when the superhumps in the outer disk is effectively quenched. Many of WZ Sge-type dwarf novae showed long-enduring superhumps during the post-superoutburst stage having periods longer than those during the main superoutburst. The period derivatives in WZ Sge-type dwarf novae are found to be strongly correlated with the fractional superhump excess, or consequently, mass ratio. WZ Sge-type dwarf novae with a long-lasting rebrightening or with multiple rebrightenings tend to have smaller period derivatives and are excellent candidate for the systems around or after the period minimum of evolution of cataclysmic variables (abridged).

Suzaku and Multi-wavelength Observations of OJ 287 during the Periodic Optical Outburst in 2007

Suzaku observations of the blazar OJ 287 were performed in 2007 April 10--13 and November 7--9. They correspond to a quiescent and a flaring state, respectively. The X-ray spectra can be well described with single power-law models in both exposures. The derived X-ray photon index and the flux density at 1 keV were found to be Gamma = 1.65 +- 0.02 and S_{1 keV} = 215 +- 5 nJy, in the quiescent state. In the flaring state, the source exhibited a harder X-ray spectrum (Gamma = 1.50 +- 0.01) with a nearly doubled X-ray flux density S_{1 keV} = 404^{+6}_{-5} nJy. Moreover, significant hard X-ray signals were detected up to ~ 27 keV. In cooperation with the Suzaku, simultaneous radio, optical, and very-high-energy gamma-ray observations were performed with the Nobeyama Millimeter Array, the KANATA telescope, and the MAGIC telescope, respectively. The radio and optical fluxes in the flaring state (3.04 +- 0.46 Jy and 8.93 +- 0.05 mJy at 86.75 Hz and in the V-band, respectively) were found to be higher by a factor of 2--3 than those in the quiescent state (1.73 +- 0.26 Jy and 3.03 +- 0.01 mJy at 86.75 Hz and in the V-band, respectively). No notable gamma-ray events were detected in either observation. The spectral energy distribution indicated that the X-ray spectrum was dominated by inverse Compton radiation in both observations, while synchrotron radiation exhibited a spectral cutoff around the optical frequency. Furthermore, no significant difference in the synchrotron cutoff frequency was found between the quiescent and flaring states. According to a simple synchrotron self-Compton model, the change of the spectral energy distribution is due to an increase in the energy density of electrons with small changes of both the magnetic field strength and the maximum Lorentz factor of electrons.

Anti-Correlation of the Near-Infrared and X-Ray Variations of the Microquasar GRS 1915+105 in Soft State

We report detailed, long term near-infrared (NIR) light curves of GRS 1915+105 in 2007-2008, covering its long "soft state" for the first time. From our NIR monitoring and the X-ray data of the All Sky Monitor (ASM) onboard Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE), we discovered that the NIR flux dropped by > 1 mag during short X-ray flares with a time-scale of days. With the termination of the soft state, the H-Ks color reddened and the anti-correlation pattern was broken. The observed H-Ks color variation suggests that the dominant NIR source was an accretion disk during the soft state. The short X-ray flares during the soft state were associated with spectral hardening in X-rays and increasing radio emission indicating jet ejection. The temporal NIR fading during the X-ray flares, hence, implies a sudden decrease of the contribution of the accretion disk when the jet is ejected.

Photometric and Spectroscopic Observations of V1280 Sco

Photometries of B, V, Rc, Ic, y, J, and Ks bands and low dispersion optical spectroscopic observations of Nova V1280 Sco, started soon after the outburst, are reported. We show that V1280 Sco is an Fe II nova and it is going through the historically slowest spectroscopic evolution. The rapid decline observed in the early phase was caused by formation of a dust shell. We estimate the abundances of CNO using the absorption lines on a spectrum at pre-maximum, and find over-abundances by [C/Fe] ~ 1.4, [N/Fe] > 2.0 and [O/Fe] ~ 1.1.

Detection of Polarimetric Variations Associated with the Shortest Time-Scale Variability in S5 0716$ + $714

We present the result of near-infrared and optical observations of the BL Lac object S5 0716$ + $714 carried out by the KANATA telescope. S5 0716$ + $714 has both a long term high-amplitude variability and a short-term variability within a night. The shortest variability (microvariability) time-scale is important for understanding the geometry of jets and magnetic field, because it provides a possible minimum size of variation sources. Here, we report the detection of 15-min variability in S5 0716$ + $714, which is one of the shortest time-scales in optical and near-infrared variations observed in blazars. The detected microvariation had an amplitude of $0.061{\pm}0.005$ mag in $V$ band and a blue color of $Δ(V-J)=-0.025{\pm}0.011$. Furthermore, we successfully detected an unprecedented, short time-scale polarimetric variation which correlated with the brightness change. We revealed that the microvariation had a specific polarization component. The polarization degree of the variation component was higher than that of the total flux. These results suggest that the microvariability originated from a small and local region where the magnetic field is aligned.

Science with UT's Dichroic-Mirror Camera (DMC), 15-band simultaneous imager

We introduce the Dichroic-Mirror Camera (DMC), an instrument developed at the University of Tokyo which is capable of performing simultaneous imaging in fifteen bands. The main feature of the DMC is the dichroic mirrors, which split incoming light into red and blue components. Combination of dichroic mirrors split light from the telescope focus into fifteen intermediate-width bands across 390 -- 950 nm. The fifteen bands of DMC provide measurements of the object's spectral energy distribution (SED) at fifteen wavelength points. During May -- June 2007 and March 2008, observing run of the DMC was carried out at Higashi-Hiroshima Observatory, Japan. We observed several objects i.e. planets, asteroids, standard stars & star clusters, planetary nebulae, galaxies, and supernovae. We describe several early scientific results from the DMC.

The 2006 November outburst of EG Aquarii: the SU UMa nature revealed

We report time-resolved CCD photometry of the cataclysmic variable EG Aquarii during the 2006 November outburst During the outburst, superhumps were unambiguously detected with a mean period of 0.078828(6) days, firstly classifying the object as an SU UMa-type dwarf nova. It also turned out that the outburst contained a precursor. At the end of the precursor, immature profiles of humps were observed. By a phase analysis of these humps, we interpreted the features as superhumps. This is the second example that the superhumps were shown during a precursor. Near the maximum stage of the outburst, we discovered an abrupt shift of the superhump period by ${\sim}$ 0.002 days. After the supermaximum, the superhump period decreased at the rate of $\dot{P}/P$=$-8.2{\times}10^{-5}$, which is typical for SU UMa-type dwarf novae. Although the outburst light curve was characteristic of SU UMa-type dwarf novae, long-term monitoring of the variable shows no outbursts over the past decade. We note on the basic properties of long period and inactive SU UMa-type dwarf novae.

Chemical Abundances in the Secondary Star of the Black Hole Binary V4641 Sagittarii (SAX J1819.3-2525)

We report on detailed spectroscopic studies performed for the secondary star in the black hole binary (micro-quasar) V4641 Sgr in order to examine its surface chemical composition and to see if its surface shows any signature of pollution by ejecta from a supernova explosion. High-resolution spectra of V4641 Sgr observed in the quiescent state in the blue-visual region are compared with those of the two bright well-studied B9 stars (14 Cyg and $ν$ Cap) observed with the same instrument. The effective temperature of V4641 Sgr (10500 $\pm$ 200 K) is estimated from the strengths of He~{\sc i} lines, while its rotational velocity, $\it v$ sin $\it i$ (95 $\pm$ 10 km s${}^{-1}$), is estimated from the profile of the Mg~{\sc ii} line at 4481 Å. We obtain abundances of 10 elements and find definite over-abundances of N (by 0.8 dex or more) and Na (by 0.8 dex) in V4641 Sgr. From line-by-line comparisons of eight other elements (C, O, Mg, Al, Si, Ti, Cr, and Fe) between V4641 Sgr and the two reference stars, we conclude that there is no apparent difference in the abundances of these elements between V4641 Sgr and the two normal late B-type stars, which have been reported to have solar abundances. An evolutionary model of a massive close binary system has been constructed to explain the abundances observed in V4641 Sgr. The model suggests that the progenitor of the black hole forming supernova was as massive as ~ 35 Msun on the main-sequence and, after becoming a ~ 10 Msun He star, underwent "dark" explosion which ejected only N and Na-rich outer layer of the He star without radioactive $^{56}$Ni.
