Quantum Nernst effect in a bismuth single crystal

We report a theoretical calculation explaining the quantum Nernst effect observed experimentally in a bismuth single crystal. Generalizing the edge-current picture in two dimensions, we show that the peaks of the Nernst coefficient survive in three dimensions due to a van Hove singularity. We also evaluate the phonon-drag effect on the Nernst coefficient numerically. Our result agrees with the experimental result for a bismuth single crystal.

Temperature-dependent screening of the edge state around antidots in the quantum Hall regime

The Aharonov-Bohm (AB) effect in a small array of antidots with large aspect ratio is investigated in the quantum Hall regime. The evolution with temperature of the AB oscillations in the magnetic field vs gate voltage (B-Vg) plane reveals the temperature dependence of the screening. The self-consistently screened potential of the compressible band surrounding an antidot is observed to gain progressively steeper slope with increasing temperature.

Fourier analyses of commensurability oscillations in Fibonacci lateral superlattices

Magnetotransport measurements have been performed on Fibonacci lateral superlattices (FLSLs) -- two-dimensional electron gases subjected to a weak potential modulation arranged in the Fibonacci sequence, LSLLSLS..., with L/S=tau (the golden ratio). Complicated commensurability oscillation (CO) is observed, which can be accounted for as a superposition of a series of COs each arising from a sinusoidal modulation representing the characteristic length scale of one of the self-similar generations in the Fibonacci sequence. Individual CO components can be separated out from the magnetoresistance trace by performing a numerical Fourier band-pass filter. From the analysis of the amplitude of a single-component CO thus extracted, the magnitude of the corresponding Fourier component in the potential modulation can be evaluated. By examining all the Fourier contents observed in the magnetoresistance trace, the profile of the modulated potential seen by the electrons can be reconstructed with some remaining ambiguity about the interrelation of the phase between different components.

Higher order terms in the geometric resonance of open orbits in unidirectional lateral superlattices

The geometric resonance of open orbits in unidirectional lateral superlattices has been examined with high magnetic-field resolution. Magnetoresistance oscillations periodic in 1/B, analogous to the well-known commensurability oscillations but orders of magnitude smaller both in magnitude and in the magnetic-field scale, have been observed superposed on the low-field positive magnetoresistance. The periodicity in 1/B can be interpreted in terms of higher order resonances.

The effect of oscillating Fermi energy on the line shape of the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillation in a two dimensional electron gas

The line shape of the Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillation has been analyzed in detail for a GaAs/AlGaAs two-dimensional electron gas. The line shape, or equivalently the behavior of the Fourier components, of the experimentally observed SdH oscillation is well reproduced by the sinusoidal density of states at the Fermi energy that oscillates with a magnetic field in a saw-tooth shape to keep the electron density constant. This suggests that the broadening of each Landau level by disorder is better described by a Gaussian than by a Lorentzian.

Resistance fluctuations and Aharonov-Bohm-type oscillations in antidot arrays in the quantum Hall regime

Resistance fluctuation phenomenon in antidot lattices in the quantum Hall regime are studied. Magnetoresistance of finite antidot array systems in the quantum Hall plateau transition regime exhibits two types of oscillatory effect. One is the aperiodic resistance fluctuations (RFs) and the other is the Aharonov-Bohm (AB)-type oscillations. Their dependences on the magnetic field and the gate voltage are quite distinct. While the aperiodic RFs are attributed to the complex evolution of the conducting network of compressible channels, the AB-type oscillations are interpreted in terms of edge states formed around individual antidots. The self-consistent screening effect is important for the both phenomenon, whereas, the single electron charging effect plays a minor role in the present case.

Modulation of the Shubnikov-de Haas Oscillation in Unidirectional Lateral Superlattices

The amplitude and phase of Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations have been analyzed in detail for two-dimensional electron gases subjected to a weak unidirectional periodic potential modulation. The amplitude is suppressed, accompanied by inversion of the phase, at the maximum bandwidth conditions at low magnetic fields. The suppression is gradually taken over by the enhancement with the increase of the magnetic fields. The suppression and the enhancement are attributable to the collisional and the diffusion contribution of the modulated potential to the conductivity, respectively, the former (the latter) being dominant at low (high) magnetic fields. A theoretical calculation that takes the two types of contributions into account shows semi-quantitative agreement with experimental traces.

A Search for CO(J=3-2) Emission from the Host Galaxy of GRB 980425 with the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment

We report on a deep search for CO(J=3-2) line emission from the host galaxy of GRB 980425 with the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment (ASTE). We observed five points of the galaxy covering the entire region. After combining all of the spectra, we obtained a global spectrum with the rms noise level of 3.3 mK in T_mb scale at a velocity resolution of 10 km s^-1. No significant emission was detected, though we find a marginal emission feature in the velocity range corresponding to the redshift of the galaxy. We derive 3 sigma upper limits on the global properties: the velocity-integrated CO(3-2) intensity of I_CO(3-2) < 0.26 K km s^-1 by adopting a velocity width of 67 km s^-1; the H_2 column density of N(H_2) < 3 x 10^20 cm^-2; the molecular gas mass of M(H_2) < 3 x 10^8 M_sun, by assuming a CO line luminosity to H_2 molecular gas mass conversion factor of X_CO = 5.0 x 10^20 cm^-2 (K km s^-1)^-1; and the star formation rate of SFR < 0.1 M_sun yr^-1, based on the Schmidt law. The SFR is consistent with the previous results of H_alpha and mid-IR observations, thereby suggesting that there is no significant obscured star formation in the host galaxy of GRB 980425. This result implies that there is a variety of GRB hosts with regard to the presence of obscured star formation.

A Revised Estimate of the CO (J=1-0) Emission from the Host Galaxy of GRB 030329 Using the Nobeyama Millimeter Array

A sensitive observation of the CO (J=1-0) molecular line emission in the host galaxy of GRB 030329 (z =0.1685) has been performed using the Nobeyama Millimeter Array in order to detect molecular gas and hidden star formation. No sign of CO emission was detected, which invalidates our previous report on the presence of molecular gas. The 3sigma upperlimit on the CO line luminosity (L'_CO) of the host galaxy is 6.9 x 10^8 K km s^-1 pc^2. The lowerlimit of the host galaxy's metallicity is estimated to be 12+log(O/H) ~ 7.9, which yields a CO line luminosity to H_2 conversion factor of alpha_CO = 40 Msun (K km s^-1 pc^2)^-1. Assuming this alpha_CO factor, the 3sigma upperlimit on the molecular gas mass of the host galaxy is 2.8 x 10^10 Msun. Based on the Schmidt law, the 3sigma upperlimit of the total star formation rate (SFR) of the host galaxy is estimated to be 38 Msun yr^-1. These results independently confirm the inferences of previous observations in the optical, submillimeter, and X-ray band, which regard this host galaxy as a compact dwarf galaxy, and not a massive, aggressively star forming galaxy.

ASTE CO(3-2) Observations of the Barred Spiral Galaxy M 83: I. Correlation between CO(3-2)/CO(1-0) Ratios and Star Formation Efficiencies

We present CO(J=3-2) emission observations with the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment (ASTE) toward the 5' x 5' (or 6.6 x 6.6 kpc at the distance D = 4.5 Mpc) region of the nearby barred spiral galaxy M 83. We successfully resolved the major structures, i.e., the nuclear starburst region, bar, and inner spiral arms in CO(J=3-2) emission at a resolution of 22'' (or 480 pc), showing a good spatial coincidence between CO(J=3-2) and 6 cm continuum emissions. We found a global CO(J=3-2) luminosity L'_CO(3-2) of 5.1 x 10^8 K km s^-1 pc^2 within the observed region. We also found L'_CO(3-2) in the disk region (0.5 < r < 3.5 kpc) of 4.2 x 10^8 K km s^-1 pc^2, indicating that CO(J=3-2) emission in the disk region significantly contributes to the global L'_CO(3-2). From a comparison of a CO(J=3-2) data with CO(J=1-0) intensities measured with Nobeyama 45-m telescope, we found that the radial profile of CO(J=3-2)/CO(J=1-0) integrated intensity ratio R_3-2/1-0 is almost unity in the central region (r < 0.25 kpc), whereas it drops to a constant value, 0.6--0.7, in the disk region. The radial profile of star formation efficiencies (SFEs), determined from 6 cm radio continuum and CO(J=1-0) emission, shows the same trend as that of R_3-2/1-0. At the bar-end (r ~ 2.4 kpc), the amounts of molecular gas and the massive stars are enhanced when compared with other disk regions, whereas there is no excess of R_3-2/1-0 and SFE in that region. This means that a simple summation of the star forming regions at the bar-end and the disk cannot reproduce the nuclear starburst of M 83, implying that the spatial variation of the dense gas fraction traced by R_3-2/1-0 governs the spatial variation of SFE in M 83.

Origin of positive magnetoresistance in small-amplitude unidirectional lateral superlattices

We report quantitative analysis of positive magnetoresistance (PMR) for unidirectional-lateral-superlattice samples with relatively small periods (a=92-184 nm) and modulation amplitudes (V_0=0.015-0.25 meV). By comparing observed PMR's with ones calculated using experimentally obtained mobilities, quantum mobilities, and V_0's, it is shown that contribution from streaming orbits (SO) accounts for only small fraction of the total PMR. For small V_0, the limiting magnetic field B_e of SO can be identified as an inflection point of the magnetoresistance trace. The major part of PMR is ascribed to drift velocity arising from incompleted cyclotron orbits obstructed by scatterings.

Harmonic Content of Strain-induced Potential Modulation in Unidirectional Lateral Superlattices

Detailed analysis of the commensurability oscillation (CO) has been performed on unidirectional lateral superlattices with periods ranging from a=92 to 184 nm. Fourier analysis reveals the second (and the third) harmonics along with the fundamental oscillation for a>=138 nm (184 nm) at low-enough temperature, evincing the presence of corresponding harmonics in the profile of the potential modulation. The harmonics manifest themselves in CO with demagnified amplitude due to the low-pass filtering action of the thermal damping factor; with a suitable consideration of the damping effect, the harmonics of the modulation potential are found to have the amplitudes V_2 and V_3 up to roughly 30% of that of the fundamental component V_1, despite the small ratio of the period a to the depth d = 99 nm of the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) from the surface. The dependence of V_n on a indicates that the fundamental component originates at the surface, while the higher harmonics arise from the effect of the strain that penetrates down into subsurface. The manipulation of high harmonics thus provides a useful technique to introduce small length-scale modulation into high-mobility 2DEGs located deep inside the wafer.

Dependence of Modulation Amplitude on Electron Density in Unidirectional Lateral Superlattices: The Effect of the Thickness of the Two-dimensional Electron Gas

The amplitude V_0 of unidirectional periodic potential modulation introduced by a surface grating into a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) formed at AlGaAs/GaAs heterointerface is measured as a function of electron density n_e by analyzing commensurability oscillation of the magnetoresistance. The electron density is varied either by applying a bias to a metallic back gate or by illumination. The amplitude decreases with increasing density, with the rate |dV_0/dn_e| roughly an order of magnitude larger for the former method. The result is interpreted in terms of the rate, dE_1/d(delta E_c), of the change in the first subband level E_1 in response to the variation of the conduction-band edge delta E_c above the heterointerface. The rate crucially depends on the thickness of the 2DEG.

New class of small amplitude low-field magnetoresistance oscillation in unidirectional lateral superlattice: Geometric resonance of Bragg-reflected cyclotron orbit

We have uncovered a new class of small amplitude magnetoresistance oscillation in unidirectional lateral superlattice (ULSL). The oscillation is observed in a low-field regime, typically |B| =< 0.03 T, as small undulation on top of well-known positive magnetoresistance background. Positions of maxima of the oscillation shift to lower field side with the increase of the electron concentration n_e roughly proportionally to n_e^{-1/2}, and also with the increase of period a of ULSL samples. The oscillation is attributed to commensurability between the period a and the width of open orbits originating from the miniband structure.
