Correlation effects on topological crystalline insulators

We study interaction effects on the topological crystalline insulators protected by time-reversal ($T$) and reflection symmetry ($R$) in two and three spatial dimensions. From the stability analysis of the edge states with bosonization, we find that the classification of the two-dimensional SPT phases protected by $Z_2\times[\mbox{U(1)}\rtimes T]$ symmetry is reduced from $\mathbb{Z}$ to $\mathbb{Z}_4$ by interactions, where the $Z_2$ symmetry denotes the reflection whose mirror plane is the two-dimensional plane itself. By extending the approach recently proposed by Isobe and Fu, we show that the classification of the three-dimensional SPT phases (i.e., topological crystalline insulators) protected by $R\times[\mbox{U(1)}\rtimes T]$ symmetry is reduced from $\mathbb{Z}$ to $\mathbb{Z}_8$ by interactions.

Anderson localization and the topology of classifying spaces

We construct the generic phase diagrams encoding the topologically distinct localized and delocalized phases of noninteracting fermionic quasiparticles for any symmetry class from the tenfold way in one, two, and three dimensions. To this end, we start from a massive Dirac Hamiltonian perturbed by a generic disorder for any dimension of space and for any one of the ten symmetry classes from the tenfold way. The physics of Anderson localization is then encoded by a two-dimensional phase diagram that we deduce from the topology of the space of normalized Dirac masses. This approach agrees with previously known results and gives an alternative explanation for the even-odd effect in the one-dimensional chiral symmetry classes. We also give a qualitative explanation for the Gade singularity and Griffiths effects in the density of states using the first homotopy group of the normalized Dirac masses in two dimensions. Finally, this approach is used to analyze the stability of massless Dirac fermions on the surface of three-dimensional topological crystalline insulators.

Charge and spin transport in edge channels of a $ν=0$ quantum Hall system on the surface of topological insulators

Three-dimensional topological insulators of finite thickness can show the quantum Hall effect (QHE) at the filling factor $ν=0$ under an external magnetic field if there is a finite potential difference between the top and bottom surfaces. We calculate energy spectra of surface Weyl fermions in the $ν=0$ QHE and find that gapped edge states with helical spin structure are formed from Weyl fermions on the side surfaces under certain conditions. These edge channels account for the nonlocal charge transport in the $ν=0$ QHE which is observed in a recent experiment on (Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_x$)$_2$Te$_3$ films. The edge channels also support spin transport due to the spin-momentum locking. We propose an experimental setup to observe various spintronics functions such as spin transport and spin conversion.

Z_3 symmetry-protected topological phases in the SU(3) AKLT model

We study $\mathbb{Z}_3$ symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases in one-dimensional spin systems with $Z_3 \times Z_3$ symmetry. We construct ground-state wave functions of the matrix product form for nontrivial $\mathbb{Z}_3$ phases and their parent Hamiltonian from a cocycle of the group cohomology $H^2(Z_3\times Z_3,U(1))$. The Hamiltonian is an SU(3) version of the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT) model, consisting of bilinear and biquadratic terms of su(3) generators in the adjoint representation. A generalization to the SU($N$) case, the SU($N$) AKLT Hamiltonian, is also presented which realizes nontrivial $\mathbb{Z}_N$ SPT phases. We use the infinite-size variant of the density matrix renormalization group (iDMRG) method to determine the ground-state phase diagram of the SU(3) bilinear-biquadratic model as a function of the parameter $θ$ controlling the ratio of the bilinear and biquadratic coupling constants. The nontrivial $\mathbb{Z}_3$ SPT phase is found for a range of the parameter $θ$ including the point of vanishing biquadratic term ($θ=0$) as well as the SU(3) AKLT point [$θ=\arctan(2/9)$]. A continuous phase transition to the SU(3) dimer phase takes place at $θ\approx -0.027π$, with a central charge $c\approx3.2$. For SU(3) symmetric cases we define string order parameters for the $\mathbb{Z}_3$ SPT phases in a similar way to the conventional Haldane phase. We propose simple spin models that effectively realize the SU(3) and SU(4) AKLT models.

Weyl and Dirac semimetals with Z_2 topological charge

We study the stability of gap-closing (Weyl or Dirac) points in the three-dimensional Brillouin zone of semimetals using Clifford algebras and their representation theory. We show that a pair of Weyl points with $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological charge are stable in a semimetal with time-reversal and reflection symmetries when the square of the product of the two symmetry transformations equals minus identity. We present toy models of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ Weyl semimetals which have surface modes forming helical Fermi arcs. We also show that Dirac points with $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological charge are stable in a semimetal with time-reversal, inversion, and SU(2) spin rotation symmetries when the square of the product of time-reversal and inversion equals plus identity. Furthermore, we briefly discuss the topological stability of point nodes in superconductors using Clifford algebras.

Spin-directed network model for the surface states of weak three-dimensional $\mathbb{Z}^{\,}_{2}$ topological insulators

A two-dimensional spin-directed $\mathbb{Z}^{\,}_{2}$ network model is constructed that describes the combined effects of dimerization and disorder for the surface states of a weak three-dimensional $\mathbb{Z}^{\,}_{2}$ topological insulator. The network model consists of helical edge states of two-dimensional layers of $\mathbb{Z}^{\,}_{2}$ topological insulators which are coupled by time-reversal symmetric interlayer tunneling. It is argued that, without dimerization of interlayer couplings, the network model has no insulating phase for any disorder strength. However, a sufficiently strong dimerization induces a transition from a metallic phase to an insulating phase. The critical exponent $ν$ for the diverging localization length at metal-insulator transition points is obtained by finite-size scaling analysis of numerical data from simulations of this network model. It is shown that the phase transition belongs to the two-dimensional symplectic universality class of Anderson transition.

Stability of surface states of weak $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological insulators and superconductors

We study the stability against disorder of surface states of weak $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological insulators (superconductors) which are stacks of strong $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological insulators (superconductors), considering representative Dirac Hamiltonians in the Altland-Zirnbauer symmetry classes in various spatial dimensions. We show that, in the absence of disorder, surface Dirac fermions of weak $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological insulators (superconductors) can be gapped out by a Dirac mass term which couples surface Dirac cones and leads to breaking of a translation symmetry (dimerization). The dimerization mass is a unique Dirac mass term in the surface Dirac Hamiltonian, and the two dimerized gapped phases which differ in the sign of the Dirac mass are distinguished by a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ index. In other words the dimerized surfaces can be regarded as a strong $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological insulator (superconductor). We argue that the surface states are not localized by disorder when the ensemble average of the Dirac mass term vanishes.

Composite pairing and superfluidity in a one-dimensional resonant Bose-Fermi mixture

We study the ground-state properties of one-dimensional mixtures of bosonic and fermionic atoms resonantly coupled to fermionic Feshbach molecules. When the particle densities of fermionic atoms and Feshbach molecules differ, the system undergoes various depletion transitions between binary and ternary mixtures, as a function of the detuning parameter. However, when the particle densities of fermionic atoms and Feshbach molecules are identical, the molecular conversion and disassociation processes induce a gap in a sector of low-energy excitations, and the remaining system can be described by a two-component Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid. Using a bosonization scheme, we derive the effective low-energy Hamiltonian for the system, which has a similar form as that of the two-chain problem of coupled Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids. With the help of improved perturbative renormalization group analysis of the latter problem, we determine the ground-state phase diagram and find that it contains a phase dominated by composite superfluid or pairing correlations between the open and closed resonant channels.

Topological classification with additional symmetries from Clifford algebras

We classify topological insulators and superconductors in the presence of additional symmetries such as reflection or mirror symmetries. For each member of the 10 Altland-Zirnbauer symmetry classes, we have a Clifford algebra defined by operators of the generic (time-reversal, particle-hole, or chiral) symmetries and additional symmetries, together with gamma matrices in Dirac Hamiltonians representing topological insulators and superconductors. Following Kitaev's approach, we classify gapped phases of non-interacting fermions under additional symmetries by examining all possible distinct Dirac mass terms which can be added to the set of generators of the Clifford algebra. We find that imposing additional symmetries in effect changes symmetry classes and causes shifts in the periodic table of topological insulators and superconductors. Our results are in agreement with the classification under reflection symmetry recently reported by Chiu et al. Several examples are discussed including a topological crystalline insulator with mirror Chern numbers and mirror superconductors.

Electromagnetic and thermal responses in topological matter: topological terms, quantum anomalies and D-branes

We discuss the thermal (or gravitational) responses in topological superconductors and in topological phases in general. Such thermal responses (as well as electromagnetic responses for conserved charge) provide a definition of topological insulators and superconductors beyond the single-particle picture. In two-dimensional topological phases, the Strěda formula for the electric Hall conductivity is generalized to the thermal Hall conductivity. Applying this formula to the Majorana surface states of three-dimensional topological superconductors predicts cross-correlated responses between the angular momentum and thermal polarization (entropy polarization). We also discuss a use of D-branes in string theory as a systematic tool to derive all such topological terms and topological responses. In particular, we relate the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ index of topological insulators introduced by Kane and Mele (and its generalization to other symmetry classes and to arbitrary dimensions) to the K-theory charge of non-BPS D-branes, and vice versa. We thus establish a link between the stability of non-BPS D-branes and the topological stability of topological insulators.

Ground-state phase diagram of a spin-1/2 frustrated ferromagnetic XXZ chain: Haldane dimer phase and gapped/gapless chiral phases

The ground-state phase diagram of a spin-1/2 XXZ chain with competing ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor (J_1<0) and antiferromagnetic second-neighbor (J_2>0) exchange couplings is studied by means of the infinite time evolving block decimation algorithm and effective field theories. For the SU(2)-symmetric (Heisenberg) case, we show that the nonmagnetic phase in the range -4<J_1/J_2<0 has a small but finite ferromagnetic dimer order. We argue that this spontaneous dimer order is associated with effective spin-1 degrees of freedom on dimerized bonds, which collectively form a valence bond solid state as in the spin-1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain (the Haldane spin chain). We thus call this phase the Haldane dimer phase. With easy-plane anisotropy, the model exhibits a variety of phases including the vector chiral phase with gapless excitations and the even-parity dimer and Neel phases with gapped excitations, in addition to the Haldane dimer phase. Furthermore, we show the existence of gapped phases with coexisting orders in narrow regions that intervene between the gapless chiral phase and any one of Haldane dimer, even-parity dimer, and Neel phases. Possible implications for quasi-one-dimensional edge-sharing cuprates are discussed.

Global phase diagram of two-dimensional Dirac fermions in random potentials

Anderson localization is studied for two flavors of massless Dirac fermions in 2D space perturbed by static disorder that is invariant under a chiral symmetry (chS) and a time-reversal symmetry (TRS) operation which, when squared, is equal either to plus or minus the identity. The former TRS (symmetry class BDI) can for example be realized when the Dirac fermions emerge from spinless fermions hopping on a 2D lattice with a linear energy dispersion such as the honeycomb lattice (graphene) or the square lattice with $π$-flux per plaquette. The latter TRS is realized by the surface states of 3D $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$-topological band insulators in symmetry class CII. In the phase diagram parametrized by the disorder strengths, there is an infrared stable line of critical points for both symmetry classes BDI and CII. Here we discuss a "global phase diagram" in which disordered Dirac fermion systems in all three chiral symmetry classes, AIII, CII, and BDI, occur in 4 quadrants, sharing one corner which represents the clean Dirac fermion limit. This phase diagram also includes symmetry classes AII [e.g., appearing at the surface of a disordered 3D $\mathbb{Z}_2$-topological band insulator in the spin-orbit (symplectic) symmetry class] and D (e.g., the random bond Ising model in two dimensions) as boundaries separating regions of the phase diagram belonging to the three chS classes AIII, BDI, and CII. Moreover, we argue that physics of Anderson localization in the CII phase can be presented in terms of a non-linear-sigma model (NLsM) with a $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$-topological term. We thereby complete the derivation of topological or Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten terms in the NLsM description of disordered fermionic models in all 10 symmetry classes relevant to Anderson localization in two spatial dimensions.

Time-reversal symmetric Kitaev model and topological superconductor in two dimensions

A time-reversal invariant Kitaev-type model is introduced in which spins (Dirac matrices) on the square lattice interact via anisotropic nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor exchange interactions. The model is exactly solved by mapping it onto a tight-binding model of free Majorana fermions coupled with static Z_2 gauge fields. The Majorana fermion model can be viewed as a model of time-reversal invariant superconductor and is classified as a member of symmetry class DIII in the Altland-Zirnbauer classification. The ground-state phase diagram has two topologically distinct gapped phases which are distinguished by a Z_2 topological invariant. The topologically nontrivial phase supports both a Kramers' pair of gapless Majorana edge modes at the boundary and a Kramers' pair of zero-energy Majorana states bound to a 0-flux vortex in the π-flux background. Power-law decaying correlation functions of spins along the edge are obtained by taking the gapless Majorana edge modes into account. The model is also defined on the one-dimension ladder, in which case again the ground-state phase diagram has Z_2 trivial and non-trivial phases.

Cross-Correlated Responses of Topological Superconductors and Superfluids

We study nontrivial responses of topological superconductors and superfluids to the temperature gradient and rotation of the system. In two-dimensional gapped systems, the Strěda formula for the electric Hall conductivity is generalized to the thermal Hall conductivity. Applying this formula to the Majorana surface states of three-dimensional topological superconductors predicts cross-correlated responses between the orbital angular momentum and thermal polarization (entropy polarization). These results can be naturally related to the gravitoelectromagnetism description of three-dimensional topological superconductors and superfluids, analogous to the topological magnetoelectric effect in ${\mathbb{Z}}_2$ topological insulators.

Competing phases in spin-1/2 J1-J2 chain with easy-plane anisotropy

We summarize our theoretical findings on the ground-state phase diagram of the spin-1/2 XXZ chain having competing nearest-neighbor (J1) and antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor (J2) couplings. Our study is mainly concerned with the case of ferromagnetic J1, and the case of antiferromagnetic J1 is briefly reviewed for comparison. The phase diagram contains a rich variety of phases in the plane of J1/J2 versus the XXZ anisotropy Delta: vector-chiral phases, Néel phases, several dimer phases, and Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid phases. We discuss the vector-chiral order that appears for a remarkably wide parameter space, successive Néel-dimer phase transitions, and an emergent nonlocal string order in a narrow region of ferromagnetic J1 side.

Chain of Majorana States from Superconducting Dirac Fermions at a Magnetic Domain Wall

We study theoretically a strongly type-II s-wave superconducting state of two-dimensional Dirac fermions in proximity to a ferromagnet having in-plane magnetization. It is shown that a magnetic domain wall can host a chain of equally spaced vortices in the superconducting order parameter, each of which binds a Majorana fermion state. The overlap integral of neighboring Majorana states is sensitive to the position of the chemical potential of the Dirac fermions. This leads to a characteristic V-shaped dependence of thermal conductivity of Majorana fermions on the chemical potential.

Quantum impurity spin in Majorana edge fermions

We show that Majorana edge modes of two-dimensional spin-triplet topological superconductors have Ising-like spin density whose direction is determined by the d-vector characterizing the spin-triplet pairing symmetry. Exchange coupling between an impurity spin (S=1/2) and Majorana edge modes is thus Ising-type. Under external magnetic field perpendicular to the Ising axis, the system can be mapped to a two-level system with Ohmic dissipation, which is equivalent to the anisotropic Kondo model. The magnetic response of the impurity spin can serve as a local experimental probe for the order parameter.

Conformal invariance, multifractality, and finite-size scaling at Anderson localization transitions in two dimensions

We generalize universal relations between the multifractal exponent α_0 for the scaling of the typical wave function magnitude at a (Anderson) localization-delocalization transition in two dimensions and the corresponding critical finite size scaling (FSS) amplitude Λ_c of the typical localization length in quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) geometry: (i) When open boundary conditions are imposed in the transverse direction of Q1D samples (strip geometry), we show that the corresponding critical FSS amplitude Λ_c^o is universally related to the boundary multifractal exponent α_0^s for the typical wave function amplitude along a straight boundary (surface). (ii) We further propose a generalization of these universal relations to those symmetry classes whose density of states vanishes at the transition. (iii) We verify our generalized relations [Eqs. (6) and (7)] numerically for the following four types of two-dimensional Anderson transitions: (a) the metal-to-(ordinary insulator) transition in the spin-orbit (symplectic) symmetry class, (b) the metal-to-(Z_2 topological insulator) transition which is also in the spin-orbit (symplectic) class, (c) the integer quantum Hall plateau transition, and (d) the spin quantum Hall plateau transition.
