Construction and Commissioning of Mid-Infrared SASE FEL at cERL

The mid-infrared range is an important spectrum range where materials exhibit a characteristic response corresponding to their molecular structure. A free-electron laser (FEL) is a promising candidate for a high-power light source with wavelength tunability to investigate the nonlinear response of materials. Although the self-amplification spontaneous emission (SASE) scheme is not usually adopted in the mid-infrared wavelength range, it may have advantages such as layout simplicity, the possibility of producing a single pulse, and scalability to a short-wavelength facility. To demonstrate the operation of a mid-infrared SASE FEL system in an energy recovery linac (ERL) layout, we constructed an SASE FEL setup in cERL, a test facility of the superconducting linac with the ERL configuration. Despite the adverse circumstance of space charge effects due to the given boundary condition of the facility, we successfully established the beam condition at the undulators, and observed FEL emission at a wavelength of 20 $\mu$m. The results show that the layout of cERL has the potential for serving as a mid-infrared light source.

Charge and spin interplay in a molecular-dimer-based organic Mott insulator

Triangular lattice quasi-two-dimensional Mott insulators based on BEDT-TTF molecule and its analogies present a possibility to produce exotic phases by coupling charge and spin degrees of freedom. In this work we discuss magnetic properties of one of such materials, $\kappa$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Hg(SCN)$_2$Cl, which is found at the border of the phase transition between a Mott insulator into a charge ordered state. Our magnetic susceptibility and cantilever magnetisation measurements demonstrate how the charge degree of freedom defines magnetic properties for few different charge phases observed in this material as a function of temperature. Between $T_{CO}=30~K$ and $T_S=24~K$ we observe charge and spin separation due to one-dimensional charge stripes formed in this material below $T_{CO}=30~K$. Below $T_S=24~K$ charge and spin degrees of freedom demonstrate coupling. Spin singlet correlations develop below 24~K, however melting of charge order below 15~K prevents the spin singlet state formation, leaving the system in the inhomogeneous state with charge ordered spin singlet domains and charge and spin fluctuating ones.

Ferromagnetism out of charge fluctuation of strongly correlated electrons in $\kappa$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Hg(SCN)$_2$Br

We perform magnetic susceptibility and magnetic torque measurements on the organic $\kappa$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Hg(SCN)$_2$Br, which is recently suggested to host an exotic quantum dipole-liquid in its low-temperature insulating phase. Below the metal-insulator transition temperature, the magnetic susceptibility follows a Curie-Weiss law with a positive Curie-Weiss temperature, and a particular $M\propto \sqrt{H}$ curve is observed. The emergent ferromagnetically interacting spins amount to about 1/6 of the full spin moment of localized charges. Taking account of the possible inhomogeneous quasi-charge-order that forms a dipole-liquid, we construct a model of antiferromagnetically interacting spin chains in two adjacent charge-ordered domains, which are coupled via fluctuating charges on a Mott-dimer at the boundary. We find that the charge fluctuations can draw a weak ferromagnetic moment out of the spin singlet domains.

Beam tuning and bunch length measurement in the bunch compression operation at the cERL

Realization of a short bunch beam by manipulating the longitudinal phase space distribution with a finite longitudinal dispersion following an off-crest accelera- tion is a widely used technique. The technique was applied in a compact test accelerator of an energy-recovery linac scheme for compressing the bunch length at the return loop. A diagnostic system utilizing coherent transition radiation was developed for the beam tuning and for estimating the bunch length. By scanning the beam parameters, we experimentally found the best condition for the bunch compression. The RMS bunch length of 250+-50 fs was obtained at a bunch charge of 2 pC. This result confirmed the design and the tuning pro- cedure of the bunch compression operation for the future energy-recovery linac (ERL).

A Symmetry Property of Momentum Distribution Functions in the Nonequilibrium Steady State of Lattice Thermal Conduction

We study a symmetry property of momentum distribution functions in the steady state of heat conduction. When the equation of motion is symmetric under change of signs for all dynamical variables, the distribution function is also symmetric. This symmetry can be broken by introduction of an asymmetric term in the interaction potential or the on-site potential, or employing the thermal walls as heat reservoirs. We numerically find differences of behavior of the models with and without the on-site potential.

Heat conduction in one-dimensional lattice dynamical systems far from equilibrium

We study heat conduction in one dimensional lattice dynamical systems far from equilibrium. The Fermi-Pasta-Ulam model and the $ϕ^4$ model are numerically compared to elucidate differences between momentum-conserving and nonconserving systems. As a results, it is found that the heat flux in the $ϕ^4$ model does not increase monotonically as the temperature differences at the ends of the lattice is increased, while it does in the FPU chain.
