Theorem of three squares across three geometries

In Euclidean geometry, the Pythagorean theorem is presented as an equation involving three squares. This paper explores how analogous expressions may be identified in spherical and hyperbolic geometries.

A Proof of Irrationality of $π$ by Contraposition

We point out that the proof of irrationality of $π$ by Niven can be modified to a proof by contraposition. As a warm-up, we also give a proof of irrationality of $\sqrt{2}$ and $\sqrt{3}$ in a similar way.

On the maximal volume of three-dimensional hyperbolic complete orthoschemes

A three-dimensional orthoscheme is defined as a tetrahedron whose base is a right-angled triangle and an edge joining the apex and a non-right-angled vertex is perpendicular to the base. A generalization, called complete orthoschemes, of orthoschemes is known in hyperbolic geometry. Roughly speaking, complete orthoschemes consist of three kinds of polyhedra; either compact, ideal or truncated. We consider a particular family of hyperbolic complete orthoschemes, which share the same base. They are parametrized by the "height", which represents how far the apex is from the base. We prove that the volume attains maximal when the apex is ultraideal in the sense of hyperbolic geometry, and that such a complete orthoscheme is unique in the family.

Strongly invertible knots, rational-fold branched coverings and hyperbolic spatial graphs

A construction of a spatial graph from a strongly invertible knot was developed by the second author, and a necessary and sufficient condition for the given spatial graph to be hyperbolic was provided as well. The condition is improved in this paper. This enable us to show that certain classes of knots can yield hyperbolic spatial graphs via the construction.

A classification of hyperbolic manifolds related to the three-dimensional torus

L. Paoluzzi constructed a family of compact orientable three-dimensional hyperbolic manifolds with totally geodesic boundary, which were, by construction, closely related to the three-dimensional torus. This paper gives their complete classification up to isometry, and also their isometry groups. The key tool is the so-called canonical decomposition of hyperbolic manifolds.

A volume formula for hyperbolic tetrahedra in terms of edge lengths

We give a closed formula for volumes of generic hyperbolic tetrahedra in terms of edge lengths. The cue of our formula is by the volume conjecture for the Turaev-Viro invariant of closed 3-manifolds, which is defined from the quantum 6j-symbols. This formula contains the dilogarithm functions, and we specify the adequate branch to get the actual value of the volumes.

A volume formula for generalized hyperbolic tetrahedra

A generalized hyperbolic tetrahedra is a polyhedron (possibly non-compact) with finite volume in hyperbolic space, obtained from a tetrahedron by the polar truncation at the vertices lying outside the space. In this paper it is proved that a volume formula for ordinary hyperbolic tetrahedra devised by J. Murakami and M. Yano can be applied to such ones. There are two key tools for the proof; one is so-called Schlafli's differential formula for hyperbolic polyhedra, and the other is a necessary and sufficient condition for given numbers to be the dihedral angles of a generalized hyperbolic simplex with respect to their dihedral angles.
