Dirac Electrons in Molecular Solids

Electrons in solids are characterized by the energy bands, which indicate that electrons are considered to be "elementary particles" with specific effective masses and g-factors reflecting features of each solid. There are cases where these particles obey dispersion relationship similar to those of Dirac electrons. Examples include graphite and bismuth both of which are known for many years, together with graphene, a single layer of graphite, recently addressed intensively after its realization. Another recent example is a molecular solid, alpha-ET2I3, which is described by an equation similar to Weyl equation with massless Dirac cones but the coordinate axis is tilted because of the location of cones at off-symmetry points. Orbital susceptibility of such Dirac electrons in graphite and bismuth has been known to have striking features not present in ordinary band electrons but resulting from the inter-band matrix elements of magnetic field. Results of theoretical studies on not only orbital susceptibility but also Hall effect of such Dirac electrons in molecular solids with tilting are introduced in this paper.

Role of charge fluctuation in Q1D organic superconductor (TMTSF)2ClO4

We have theoretically investigated the spin and charge fluctuations in the quasi-one dimensional organic superconductor (TMTSF)2ClO4. Using the extended multi-site Hubbard model, which contains four sites in a unit cell and the transfer energies obtained by the extended Hückel method, we calculate the linearized gap equation with the random phase approximation, to find novel order parameters of superconductivity due to several kinds of charge fluctuations induced by the anisotropic intersite repulsive interactions. For the singlet state, the order parameter with line nodes appears in the case of the strong charge fluctuation, while the order parameter with anisotropic gap suggested by Shimahara is reproduced in the spin fluctuation. The triplet state is also obtained for the wide parameter range of repulsive interactions due to a cooperation between charge and spin fluctuations.

Tilted-Cone Induced Cusps and Nonmonotonic Structures in Dynamical Polarization Function of Massless Dirac Fermions

The polarization function of electrons with the tilted Dirac cone found in organic conductors is studied using the tilted Weyl equation. The dynamical property is explored based on the analytical treatment of the particle-hole excitation. It is shown that the polarization function as the function of both the frequency and the momentum exhibits cusps and nonmonotonic structures. The polarization function depends not only on the magnitude but also the direction of the external momentum. These properties are characteristic of the tilted Dirac cone, and are contrast to the isotropic case of grapheme. Further, the results are applied to calculate the optical conductivity, the plasma frequency and the screening of Coulomb interaction, which are also strongly influenced by the tilted cone.

Transport Currents and Persistent Currents in Solids: Orbital Magnetism and Hall Effect of Dirac Electrons

Features of electronic currents in solids are truly diverse depending on circumstances, e.g. non-equilibrium transport currents leading to dissipation and persistent currents flowing in equilibrium. Differences between these currents may be clear in many cases, while there are some where they are not. Results of theoretical studies on the latter cases will be introduced briefly focusing on the inter-band effects of magnetic fields in orbital magnetisms and Hall effects of Dirac electrons.

Tilted-Cone-induced easy-plane pseudo-spin ferromagnet and Kosterlitz-Thouless transition in massless Dirac fermions

The possible quantum Hall ferromagnet at a filling factor $ν=0$ is investigated for the zero-energy (N=0) Landau level of the two dimensional massless Dirac fermions in $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ under pressure with tilted cones and a twofold valley degeneracy resulting from time-reversal symmetry. In the case of the Dirac cones without tilting, the long-range Coulomb interaction in the N=0 Landau level exhibits the SU(2) valley-pseudo-spin symmetry even to the order $O(a/l_{\rm H})$, in contrast to $N \ne 0$ Landau levels, where $a$ and $l_{\rm H}$ represent the lattice constant and the magnetic length, respectively. Such a characteristic comes from a fact that zero-energy states in a particular valley are restricted to only one of the spinor components, whereas the other spinor component is necessarily zero. In the case of the tilted Dirac cones as found in $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$, one obtains a non-zero value of the second component and then the ackscattering processes between valleys becomes non-zero. It is shown that this fact can lead to easy-plane pseudospin ferromagnetism (XY-type). In this case, the phase fluctuations of the order parameters can be described by the XY model leading to Kosterlitz-Thouless transition at lower temperature. In view of these theoretical results, experimental findings in resistivity of $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ are discussed.

Electronic Properties Close to Dirac Cone in Two-Dimensional Organic Conductor $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$

A zero-gap state (ZGS) has been found in a bulk system of two-dimensional organic conductor, $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ salt which consists of four sites of donor molecules in a unit cell. In the present paper, the characteristic of the ZGS is analyzed in detail and the electronic properties are examined in the vicinity of the contact point where the conduction and valence bands degenerate to form the zero-gap. The eigenvectors of the energy band have four components of respective sites, where two of them correspond to inequivalent sites and the other two correspond to equivalent sites. It is shown that the former exhibits an exotic momentum dependence around the contact point and the latter shows almost a constant dependence. The density of states of each site close to the Fermi point is calculated to demonstrate the temperature dependence of the local magnetic susceptibility and the local nuclear magnetic relaxation rate. Further, the robust property of the ZGS against the anion potential is also shown by using the second-order perturbation.

Role of Interlayer Electron Hopping for Spin Density Wave State in the Zero-Gap Organic Conductor

We investigate the formation of density waves in the zero-gap state (ZGS) which has been found in the quasi-two-dimensional organic conductor $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ salt under the hydrostatic pressure. The ZGS exhibits the cone-like dispersion for both the conduction band and the valence band which degenerate each other at the two-dimensional wave vectors, $\pm\mib{k}_0$ forming a zero gap. By using the extended Hubbard model with repulsive interaction we calculate the onset temperature of the spin density wave (SDW) as a function of the interlayer electron hopping, which by itself does not break the cone-like dispersion. It is shown that the SDW with wave number $2\mib{k}_0$ is induced by the combined effect of the interaction, the inter-band excitation across the zero-gap and the interlayer hopping.

Pressure-Induced Zero-Gap Semiconducting State in Organic Conductor $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ Salt

We show a zero-gap semiconducting (ZGS) state in the quasi-two-dimensional organic conductor $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ salt, which emerges under uniaxial pressure along the a-axis (the stacking axis of the BEDT-TTF molecule). The ZGS state is the state in which a Dirac cone with the band spectrum of a linear dispersion exists around the Fermi point connecting an unoccupied (electron) band with an occupied (hole) band. The spectrum exhibits a large anisotropy in velocity, which depends on the direction from the Fermi point. By varying the magnitude of several transfer energies of a tight-binding model with four sites per unit cell, it is shown that the ZGS state exists in a wide pressure range, and is attributable to the large anisotropy of the transfer energies along the stacking axis.

Electric Conductivity of the Zero-gap Semiconducting State in Alpha-(BEDT-TTF)2I3 Salt

The electric conductivity which reveals the zero gap semiconducting (ZGS) state has been investigated as the function of temperature $T$ and life time $τ$ in order to understand the ZGS state in quarter-filled $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ salt with four sites in the unit cell. By treating $τ$ as a parameter and making use of the one-loop approximation, it is found that the conductivity is proportional to $T$ and $τ$ for $k_B\gg\hbar/τ$ and independent of $T$ and $τ$ for $k_B T\ll\hbar/τ$. Further the conductivity being independent of $T$ in the ZGS state is examined in terms of Born approximation for the impurity cattering.

On the Magnetic Excitation Spectra of High Tc Cu Oxides up to the Energies far above the Resonance Energy

Magnetic excitation spectra c"(q,w) of YBa2Cu3Oy and La214 systems have been studied. For La1.88Sr0.12CuO4, c"(q,w) have been measured up to ~30 meV and existing data have been analyzed up to the energy w~150 meV by using the phenomenological expression of the generalized magnetic susceptibility c(q,w)=c0(q,w)/{1+J(q)c0(q,w)}, where c0(q,w) is the susceptibility of the electrons without the exchange coupling J(q) among them. In the relatively low energy region up to slightly above the resonance energy Er, it has been reported by the authors' group that the expression can explain characteristics of the q- and w-dependence of the spectra of YBa2Cu3Oy (YBCO or YBCOy). Here, it is also pointed out that the expression can reproduce the rotation of four incommensurate peaks of c"(q,w) within the a*-b* plane about (p/a, p/a) {or so-called (p, p)} point by 45 degree, which occurs as w goes to the energy region far above Er from E below Er. For La2-xSrxCuO4 and La2-xBaxCuO4, agreements between the observed results and the calculations are less satisfactory than for YBCO, indicating that we have to take account of the existence of the "stripes" to consistently explain the observed c"(q,w) of La214 system especially near x=1/8.

Studies on Magnetic Excitation Spectra of High-Tc Superconductors

Magnetic excitation spectra c"(q,w) of YBa2Cu3Oy, La2-xSrxCuO4, La2-y-xNdySrxCuO4 and Nd2-xCexCuO4 are compared with those of model calculations, where q and w are the wave vector and the energy of the excitations. In the model, the dynamical spin susceptibility is calculated by the expression c(q,w)= c0(q,w)/{1+J(q)c0(q,w)}, where c0(q,w) is obtained by adopting the effective energy dispersion of the quasi particles which can reproduce the shapes of the Fermi surface, and J(q) is the exchange coupling between the Cu-Cu electrons. It is important to consider the experimentally observed quasi particle broadening (G) to reproduce the observed spectra of YBa2Cu3Oy, while to reproduce the data of La2-xSrxCuO4 and La2-y-xNdySrxCuO4, very small G values have to be used, even in the phases without the static "stripe" order. This may be caused by the existence of the "stripe" correlations or "stripe" fluctuations.

Charge fluctuation induced superconducting state in two-dimensional quarter-filled electron systems

We investigate the superconducting (SC) state in two-dimensional extended Hubbard model at a quarter-filling with the on-site repulsive interaction ($U$) and the nearest-neighbor one ($V$), which lead to the spin fluctuation and the charge fluctuation, respectively. The effect of the charge fluctuation on the onset of the SC state is calculated by estimating the pairing interaction within the random phase approximation. Solving the linearized Eliashberg equation with the anomalous self-energy as the function of both momentum and frequency, we examined the singlet SC state on the plane of $U$ and $V$ with the fixed temperature. We found a novel result that the SC state with the $d_{xy}$ symmetry retains for most parameters of $U$ and $V$, although the pairing interaction changes the sign from repulsive one into attractive one with increasing $V$. The reentrant transition as the function of temperature occurs close to the onset of the SC state.

Effects of "Stripes" on the Magnetic Excitation Spectra of La1.48Nd0.4Sr0.12CuO4

The wave vector(q)- and energy(w)-dependent magnetic excitation spectra c"(q,w), have been studied in the temperature(T) range of 10 K<T<150 K on single crystals of La1.48Nd0.4Sr0.12CuO4, which has the static "stripe" order in the low temperature phase. The incommensurability d of the peak of c"(q,w) found by the q-scans and the peak width Dq exhibit characteristic T-dependences. Observed profiles show clear incommensurate structure even at rather high temperatures. The results indicate that effects of the slowly fluctuating "stripes" exist not only in the low temperature tetragonal (LTT) phase but also in the orthorhombic phase(LTO1) of the present system. The persistence of the local structural characteristics of the low-T phase seems to be important.

Detailed Structure of the Magnetic Excitation Spectra of YBa2Cu3Oy and Its Implication on the Physical Characteristics of the Electron System

Detailed structure of the magnetic excitation spectra x"(q,w) of the superconducting oxide YBa2Cu3O6.5(the transition temperature Tc ~ 52 K) in the wave vector (q)- and the energy(w)-space, and its temperature (T) dependence have been studied. By adopting an effective energy dispersion of the quasi particles which can reproduce the shape of the Fermi surface and by introducing the exchange interaction between the Cu spins, a rather satisfactory agreement between the calculation and the experimentally observed data can be obtained. In the study, it has been found that the effects of the quasi particle- energy broadening on the excitation spectra x"(q,w) is important. The sharp resonance peak observed at w ~ 40 meV for the optimally doped system of YBa2Cu3Oy can be naturally reproduced by the present model

Phase Diagram of the Electron-Doped Cuprate Superconductors

We investigate the phase diagram of the electron-doped systems in high-Tc cuprates. We calculate the superconducting transition temperature Tc, the antiferromagnetic transition temperature TN, the NMR relaxation rate 1/T1 with the antiferromagnetic fluctuations in the fluctuation-exchange (FLEX) approximation and with the superconducting fluctuations in the self-consistent t-matrix approximation. Obtained phase diagram has common features as those in the hole-doped systems, including the antiferromagnetic state, the superconducting state and the spin gap phenomenon. Doping-dependences of TN, Tc and Tsg (spin gap temperature) are, however, different with those in the hole-doped systems. These differences are due to the intrinsic nature of the ingap states which are intimately related with the Zhang-Rice singlets in the hole-doped systems and are correlated d-electrons in the electron-doped systems, respectively, which has been shown in the d-p model.

Pseudogap Phenomena and Phase Diagram in the 2-Band Hubbard Model

High-Tc superconducting materials (HTSC) have anomalous properties such as the pseudo-gap or spin-gap etc., in Hall coefficient, 1/T1T and the density of states etc. First including effects of strong on-site repulsion between d-electrons at Cu-sites, we obtain quasi-particles with super-exchange interaction Js, whose band width tends to zero, i.e., the system goes to insulator, as the hole-doping rate tends to zero. The quasi-particles correspond to Zhang-Rice singlet states. Js larger than the band width combined with the 2-dimensional character of the system induces strong antiferro-magnetic (AF) and superconducting (SC) fluctuations. We treat effects of the AF ones in the FLEX approximation and those of the SC ones in the self-consistent t-matrix approximation to show that both fluctuations in the under-doped region start to increase at T0 as T decreases from T>>Tc, the AF ones dominate the SC ones at T>Tsg, while SC ones dominate at T<Tsg. This cross-over of the fluctuations causes the anomalous phenomena in the under-doped region. We also obtain the phase diagram of HTSC consistent to one observed in experiments.

Pseudogap Induced by Superconducting Fluctuation in the d-p Model

Using the d-p model, we demonstrate that the pseudogap, which is induced by the superconducting fluctuation, plays key roles in the determination of the phase diagram observed in high-Tc superconducting materials. We take the pairing interaction mediated by the spin fluctuation and calculate the superconducting transition temperature Tc, the NMR relaxation rate 1/T1 and the single-particle spectrum by treating both the superconducting fluctuation and spin fluctuation in a consistent fashion. As temperature decreases, 1/T1T increases at high temperatures, and it reaches a maximum followed by a sharp drop in the underdoped region, due to the evolution of the pseudogap in the single-particle spectrum. The evolution is also consistent with those of ARPES experiments.
