The $^{7}$Be II Resonance Lines in Two Classical Novae V5668 Sgr and V2944 Oph

We report spectroscopic observations of the resonance lines of singly ionized $^{7}$Be in the blue-shifted absorption line systems found in the post-outburst spectra of two classical novae -- V5668 Sgr (Nova Sagittarii 2015 No.2) and V2944 Oph (Nova Ophiuchi 2015). The unstable isotope, $^{7}$Be, should has been created during the thermonuclear runaway (TNR) of these novae and decays to form $^{7}$Li within a short period (a half-life of 53.22 days). Confirmations of $^{7}$Be are the second and the third ones following the first case found in V339 Del by Tajitsu et al. (2015). The blue-shifted absorption line systems in both novae are clearly divided into two velocity components, both of which contain $^{7}$Be. This means that the absorbing gases in both velocity components consist of products of TNR. We estimate amounts of $^{7}$Be produced during outbursts of both novae and conclude that significant $^{7}$Li should have been created. These findings strongly suggest that the explosive production of $^{7}$Li via the reaction $^{3}$He($α$,$γ$)$^{7}$Be and subsequent decay to $^{7}$Li occurs frequently among classical novae and contributes to the process of the Galactic Li enrichment.

Spectroscopic study of red giants in the Kepler field with asteroseismologically established evolutionary status and stellar parameters

Thanks to the recent very high-precision photometry of red giants from satellites such as Kepler, precise mass and radius values as well as accurate information of evolutionary stages are already established by asteroseismic approach for a large number of G-K giants. Based on the high-dispersion spectra of selected such 55 red giants in the Kepler field with precisely known seismic parameters (among which parallaxes are available for 9 stars), we checked the accuracy of the determination method of stellar parameters previously applied to many red giants by Takeda et al. (2008, PASJ, 60, 781), since it may be possible to discriminate their complex evolutionary status by using the surface gravity vs. mass diagram. We confirmed that our spectroscopic gravity and the seismic gravity satisfactorily agree with each other (to within ~0.1 dex) without any systematic difference. However, the mass values of He-burning red clump giants derived from stellar evolutionary tracks (~2-3 Msun) were found to be markedly larger by ~50% compared to the seismic values (~1-2 Msun) though such discrepancy is not seen for normal giants in the H-burning phase, which reflects the difficulty of mass determination from intricately overlapping tracks on the luminosity vs. effective temperature diagram. This consequence implies that the mass results of many red giants in the clump region determined by Takeda et al. (2008) are likely to be significantly overestimated. We also compare our spectroscopically established parameters with recent literature values, and further discuss the prospect of distinguishing the evolutionary status of red giants based on the conventional (i.e., non-seismic) approach.

Explosive lithium production in the classical nova V339 Del (Nova Delphini 2013)

The origin of lithium (Li) and its production process have long been an unsettled question in cosmology and astrophysics. Candidates environments of Li production events or sites suggested by previous studies include big bang nucleosynthesis, interactions of energetic cosmic rays with interstellar matter, evolved low mass stars, novae, and supernova explosions. Chemical evolution models and observed stellar Li abundances suggest that at least half of the present Li abundance may have been produced in red giants, asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, and novae. However, no direct evidence for the supply of Li from stellar objects to the Galactic medium has yet been found. Here we report on the detection of highly blue-shifted resonance lines of the singly ionized radioactive isotope of beryllium, $^{7}$Be, in the near ultraviolet (UV) spectra of the classical nova V339 Del (Nova Delphini 2013). Spectra were obtained 38 to 48 days after the explosion. $^{7}$Be decays to form $^{7}$Li within a short time (half-life 53.22 days). The spectroscopic detection of this fragile isotope implies that it has been created during the nova explosion via the reaction $^{3}\mbox{He}(α,γ)^{7}\mbox{Be}$, and supports the theoretical prediction that a significant amount of $^{7}$Li could be produced in classical nova explosions. This finding opens a new way to explore $^{7}$Li production in classical novae and provides a clue to the mystery of the Galactic evolution of lithium.

Chemical Abundances and Dust in the Halo Planetary Nebula K648 in M15: Its Origin and Evolution based on an Analysis of Multiwavelength Data

We report an investigation of the extremely metal-poor and C-rich planetary nebula (PN) K648 in the globular cluster M15 using the UV to far-IR data obtained using the Subaru, HST, FUSE, Spitzer, and Herschel. We determined the nebular abundances of ten elements. The enhancement of F ([F/H]=+0.96) is comparable to that of the halo PN BoBn1. The central stellar abundances of seven elements are determined. The stellar C/O ratio is similar to the nebular C/O ratios from recombination line and from collisionally excited line (CEL) within error, and the stellar Ne/O ratio is also close to the nebular CEL Ne/O ratio. We found evidence of carbonaceous dust grains and molecules including Class B 6-9 um and 11.3 um polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and the broad 11 um feature. The profiles of these bands are similar to those of the C-rich halo PNe H4-1 and BoBn1. Based on the theoretical model, we determined the physical conditions of the gas and dust and their masses, i.e., 0.048 Msun and 4.95x10^{-7} Msun, respectively. The observed chemical abundances and gas mass are in good agreement with an asymptotic giant branch nucleosynthesis model prediction for stars with an initial 1.25 Msun plus a 2.0x10^{-3} Msun partial mixing zone (PMZ) and stars with an initial mass of 1.5 Msun without a PMZ. The core-mass of the central star is approximately 0.61-0.63 Msun. K648 is therefore likely to have evolved from a progenitor that experienced coalescence or tidal disruption during the early stages of evolution, and became a ~1.25-1.5 Msun blue straggler.

Spectroscopic Study on the Beryllium Abundances of Red Giant Stars

An extensive spectroscopic study was carried out for the beryllium abundances of 200 red giants (mostly of late G and early K type), which were determined from the near-UV Be II 3131.066 line based on high-dispersion spectra obtained by Subaru/HDS, with an aim of investigating the nature of surface Be contents in these evolved giants; e.g., dependence upon stellar parameters, degree of peculiarity along with its origin and build-up timing. We found that Be is considerably deficient (to widely different degree from star to star) in the photosphere of these evolved giants by ~1-3 dex (or more) compared to the initial abundance. While the resulting Be abundances (A(Be)) appear to weakly depend upon T_eff, log g, [Fe/H], M, age, and v_sin i, this may be attributed to the metallicity dependence of A(Be) coupled with the mutual correlation between these stellar parameters, since such tendencies almost disappear in the metallicity-scaled Be abundance ([Be/Fe]). By comparing the Be abundances (as well as their correlations with Li and C) to the recent theoretical predictions based on sophisticated stellar evolution calculations, we concluded that such a considerable extent/diversity of Be deficit is difficult to explain only by the standard theory of first dredge-up in the envelope of red giants, and that some extra mixing process (such as rotational or thermohaline mixing) must be responsible, which presumably starts to operate already in the main-sequence phase. This view is supported by the fact that appreciable Be depletion is seen in less evolved intermediate-mass B-A type stars near to the main sequence.

Chemical abundances in the extremely Carbon and Xenon-rich halo planetary nebula H4-1

We performed detailed chemical abundance analysis of the extremely metal-poor ([Ar/H]-2) halo planetary nebula H4-1 based on the multi-wavelength spectra from Subaru/HDS, GALEX, SDSS, and Spitzer/IRS and determined the abundances of 10 elements. The C and O abundances were derived from collisionally excited lines (CELs) and are almost consistent with abundances from recombination lines (RLs). We demonstrated that the large discrepancy in the C abundance between CEL and RL in H4-1 can be solved using the temperature fluctuation model. We reported the first detection of the [Xe III]5846 A line in H4-1 and determination of its elemental abundance ([Xe/H]>+0.48). H4-1 is the most Xe-rich PN among the Xe-detected PNe. The observed abundances are close to the theoretical prediction by a ~2.0 Msun single star model with initially r-process element rich ([r/Fe]=+2.0 dex). The observed Xe abundance would be a product of the r-process in primordial SNe. The [C/O]-[Ba/(Eu or Xe)] diagram suggests that the progenitor of H4-1 shares the evolution with two types of carbon-enhanced metal-poor stars (CEMP), CEMP-r/s and CEMP-no stars. The progenitor of H4-1 is a presumably binary formed in an r-process rich environment.

Detection of Low-Level Activities in Solar-Analog Stars from the Emission Strengths of Ca II 3934 Line

Activity studies of solar-type stars, especially with reference to the status of our current Sun among them, have exposed the importance of (1) homogeneously selecting the sample stars and (2) reliably evaluating their activities down to a considerably low level. Motivated by these requirements, we conducted an extensive study on the activities of 118 solar-analog stars (of sufficiently similar properties to each other) by measuring the emission strength at the core of Ca II 3933.663 line (K line) on the high-dispersion spectrogram obtained by Subaru/HDS, where special attention was paid to correctly detecting the chromospheric emission by removing the wing-fitted photospheric profile calculated from the classical solar model atmosphere. This enabled us to detect low-level activities down to log R' ~ -5.4 (R' is the ratio of the chromospheric core emission flux to the total bolometric flux), by which we could detect subtle activity differences which were indiscernible in previous studies. Regarding the Sun, we found log R'sun = -5.33 near to the low end of the distribution, which means that it belongs to the distinctly low activity group among solar analogs. This excludes the once-suggested possibility for the high frequency of Maunder-minimum stars showing appreciably lower activities than the minimum-Sun.

Examination of the mass-dependent Li depletion hypothesis by the Li abundances of the very metal-poor double-lined spectroscopic binary G166-45

The Li abundances of the two components of the very metal-poor ([Fe/H]=-2.5) double-lined spectroscopic binary G166-45 (BD+26 2606) are determined separately based on high resolution spectra obtained with the Subaru Telescope High Dispersion Spectrograph and its image slicer. From the photometric colors and the mass ratio the effective temperatures of the primary and secondary components are estimated to be 6350+/-100K and 5830+/-170K, respectively. The Li abundance of the primary (A(Li)=2.23) agrees well with the Spite plateau value, while that of the secondary is slightly lower (A(Li)=2.11). Such a discrepancy of the Li abundances between the two components is previously found in the extremely metal-poor, double-lined spectroscopic binary CS22876-032, however, the discrepancy in G166-45 is much smaller. The results agree with the trends found for Li abundance as a function of effective temperature (and of stellar mass) of main-sequence stars with -3.0<[Fe/H]<-2.0, suggesting that the depletion of Li at Teff ~ 5800K is not particularly large in this metallicity range. The significant Li depletion found in CS22876-032B is a phenomenon only found in the lowest metallicity range ([Fe/H]<-3).

The image slicer for the Subaru Telescope High Dispersion Spectrograph

We report on the design, manufacturing, and performance of the image slicer for the High Dispersion Spectrograph (HDS) on the Subaru Telescope. This instrument is a Bowen-Walraven type image slicer providing five 0.3 arcsec x 1.5 arcsec images with a resolving power of R= 110,000. The resulting resolving power and line profiles are investigated in detail, including estimates of the defocusing effect on the resolving power. The throughput in the wavelength range from 400 to 700 nm is higher than 80%, thereby improving the efficiency of the spectrograph by a factor of 1.8 for 0.7 arcsec seeing.

Beryllium Abundances of Solar-Analog Stars

An extensive beryllium abundance analysis was conducted for 118 solar analogs (along with 87 FGK standard stars) by applying the spectrum synthesis technique to the near-UV region comprising the Be II line at 3131.066 A, in an attempt to investigate whether Be suffers any depletion such as the case of Li showing a large diversity. We found that, while most of these Sun-like stars are superficially similar in terms of their A(Be) (Be abundances) around the solar value within ~ +/- 0.2dex, 4 out of 118 samples turned out strikingly Be-deficient (by more than ~2 dex) and these 4 stars belong to the group of lowest v_e sin i (projected rotation velocity). Moreover, even for the other majority showing an apparent similarity in Be, we can recognize a tendency that A(Be) gradually increases with an increase in v_e sin i. These observational facts suggest that any solar analog star (including the Sun) generally suffers some kind of Be depletion during their lives, where the rotational velocity (or the angular momentum) plays an important role in the sense that depletion tends to be enhanced by slower rotation. Hence, our findings require that the occasionally stated view "G-type dwarfs with T_eff ~< 6000 K are essentially homogeneous in Be with their original composition retained" should be revised. Also, our analysis indicates that the difference of ~0.2 dex in A(Be) between the solar photosphere and the meteorite really exists, implying that "UV missing opacity" is irrelevant at least for this Be II line.

Dust and Chemical Abundances of the Sagittarius dwarf Galaxy Planetary Nebula Hen2-436

We have estimated elemental abundances of the planetary nebula (PN) Hen2-436 in the Sagittarius (Sgr) spheroidal dwarf galaxy using ESO/VLT FORS2, Magellan/MMIRS, and Spitzer/IRS spectra. We have detected candidates of [F II] 4790A, [Kr III] 6826A, and [P II] 7875A lines and successfully estimated the abundances of these elements ([F/H]=+1.23, [Kr/H]=+0.26, [P/H]=+0.26) for the first time. We present a relation between C, F, P, and Kr abundances among PNe and C-rich stars. The detections of F and Kr support the idea that F and Kr together with C are synthesized in the same layer and brought to the surface by the third dredge-up. We have estimated the N^2+ and O^2+ abundances using optical recombination lines (ORLs) and collisionally excited lines (CELs). The discrepancy between the abundance derived from the O ORL and that derived from the O CEL is >1 dex. To investigate the status of the central star of the PN, nebula condition, and dust properties, we construct a theoretical SED model with CLOUDY. By comparing the derived luminosity and temperature of the central star with theoretical evolutionary tracks, we conclude that the initial mass of the progenitor is likely to be ~1.5-2.0 Msun and the age is ~3000 yr after the AGB phase. The observed elemental abundances can be explained by a theoretical nucleosynthesis model with a star of initial mass 2.25 Msun, Z=0.008 and LMC compositions. We have estimated the dust mass to be 2.9x10^-4 Msun (amorphous carbon only) or 4.0x10^-4 Msun (amorphous carbon and PAH). Based on the assumption that most of the observed dust is formed during the last two thermal pulses and the dust-to-gas mass ratio is 5.58x10^-3, the dust mass-loss rate and the total mass-loss rate are <3.1x10^-8 Msun / yr and <5.5x10^-6 Msun / yr, respectively. Our estimated dust mass-loss rate is comparable to a Sgr dwarf galaxy AGB star with similar metallicity and luminosity.

Lyman Alpha Emitters at z=7 in the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Survey Field: Photometric Candidates and Luminosity Function

We conducted a deep narrowband NB973 (FWHM = 200 A centered at 9755 A) survey of z=7 Lyman alpha emitters (LAEs) in the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Survey Field, using the fully depleted CCDs newly installed on the Subaru Telescope Suprime-Cam, which is twice more sensitive to z=7 Lyman alpha at ~ 1 micron than the previous CCDs. Reaching the depth 0.5 magnitude deeper than our previous survey in the Subaru Deep Field that led to the discovery of a z=6.96 LAE, we detected three probable z=7 LAE candidates. Even if all the candidates are real, the Lyman alpha luminosity function (LF) at z=7 shows a significant deficit from the LF at z=5.7 determined by previous surveys. The LAE number and Lyman alpha luminosity densities at z=7 is ~ 7.7-54% and ~5.5-39% of those at z=5.7 to the Lyman alpha line luminosity limit of L(Ly-alpha) >~ 9.2 x 10^{42} erg s^{-1}. This could be due to evolution of the LAE population at these epochs as a recent galaxy evolution model predicts that the LAE modestly evolves from z=5.7 to 7. However, even after correcting for this effect of galaxy evolution on the decrease in LAE number density, the z=7 Lyman alpha LF still shows a deficit from z=5.7 LF. This might reflect the attenuation of Lyman alpha emission by neutral hydrogen remaining at the epoch of reionization and suggests that reionization of the universe might not be complete yet at z=7. If we attribute the density deficit to reionization, the intergalactic medium (IGM) transmission for Lyman alpha photons at z=7 would be 0.4 <= T_{Ly-alpha}^{IGM} <= 1, supporting the possible higher neutral fraction at the earlier epochs at z > 6 suggested by the previous surveys of z=5.7-7 LAEs, z ~ 6 quasars and z > 6 gamma-ray bursts.

Discovery of Multiple High-Velocity Narrow Circumstellar Na I D Lines in Nova V1280 Sco

We discovered multiple high-velocity (ranging from -900 to -650 km/s) and narrow (FWHM = 15 km/s) absorption components corresponding to both the D2 and the D1 lines of Na I on a high dispersion spectrum of V1280 Sco observed on 2009 May 9 (UT), 814 d after the V-band maximum. Subsequent observations carried out on 2009 June and July confirmed at least 11 distinct absorption components in both systems. Some components had deepened during the two months period while their HWHMs and wavelengths remained nearly constant. We suggest these high velocity components originate in cool clumpy gas clouds moving on the line of sight, produced in interactions between pre-existing cool circumstellar gas and high velocity gas ejected in the nova explosion. The optical region spectrum of V1280 Sco in 2009 is dominated by the continuum radiation and exhibits no forbidden line characterizing the nebular phase of typical novae. Permitted Fe II lines show doubly peaked emission profiles and some strong Fe II lines are accompanied by a blue shifted (about -255 km/s) absorption component. However, no high-velocity and narrow components corresponding to those of Na I could be detected in Fe II lines nor in the Balmer lines. The 255 km/s low velocity absorption component is most probably originating in the wind from the nova.

High-Dispersion Spectroscopic Study of Solar Twins: HIP 56948, HIP 79672, and HIP 100963

An intensive spectroscopic study was performed for three representative solar twins (HIP 56948, HIP 79672, and HIP 100963) as well as for the Sun (Moon; reference standard), with an intention of (1) quantitatively discussing the relative-to-Sun similarities based on the precisely established differential parameters and (2) investigating the reason causing the Li abundance differences despite their similarities. It was concluded that HIP 56948 most resembles the Sun in every respect including the Li abundance (though not perfectly similar) among the three and deserves the name of "closest-ever solar twin", while HIP 79672 and HIP 100963 have somewhat higher effective temperature and appreciably higher surface Li composition. While there is an indication of Li being rotation-dependent because the projected rotation in HIP 56948 (and the Sun) is slightly lower than the other two, the rotational difference alone does not seem to be so large as to efficiently produce the marked change in Li. Rather, this may be more likely to be attributed (at least partly) to the slight difference in T_eff via some T_eff-sensitive Li-controlling mechanism. Since the abundance of beryllium was found to be essentially solar for all stars irrespective of Li, any physical process causing the Li diversity should work only on Li without affecting Be.

Detection of Fluorine in the Halo Planetary Nebula BoBn 1: Evidence For a Binary Progenitor Star

We have found the fluorine lines [F IV] 3996.92A,4059.90A in the extremely metal-poor ([Ar/H] = -2.10+/-0.21) halo planetary nebula (PN) BoBn 1 in high-dispersion spectra from the 8.2-m VLT/UVES archive. Chemical abundance analysis shows that the fluorine abundance is [F/H] = +1.06+/-0.08, making BoBn 1 the most fluorine-enhanced and metal-poor PN among fluorine-detected PNe and providing new evidence that fluorine is enhanced by nucleosynthesis in low mass metal-poor stars. A comparison with the abundances of carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars suggests that BoBn 1 shares their origin and evolution with CEMP-s stars such as HE1305+0132. BoBn 1 might have evolved from a binary consisting of ~2 Msun primary and ~0.8 Msun secondary stars.

Evidence for a companion to BM Gem, a silicate carbon star

Balmer and Paschen continuum emission as well as Balmer series lines of P Cygni-type profile from H_gamma through H_23 are revealed in the violet spectra of BM Gem, a carbon star associated with an oxygen-rich circumstellar shell (`silicate carbon star') observed with the high dispersion spectrograph (HDS) on the Subaru telescope. The blue-shifted absorption in the Balmer lines indicates the presence of an outflow, the line of sight velocity of which is at least 400 km s^-1, which is the highest outflow velocity observed to date in a carbon star. We argue that the observed unusual features in BM Gem are strong evidence for the presence of a companion, which should form an accretion disk that gives rise to both an ionized gas region and a high velocity, variable outflow. The estimated luminosity of ~0.2 (0.03-0.6) L_sun for the ionized gas can be maintained by a mass accretion rate to a dwarf companion of ~10^-8 M_sun yr^-1, while ~10^-10 M_sun yr^-1 is sufficient for accretion to a white dwarf companion. These accretion rates are feasible for some detached binary configurations on the basis of the Bond-Hoyle type accretion process. We concluded that the carbon star BM Gem is in a detached binary system with a companion of low mass and low luminosity. However, we are unable to determine whether this companion object is a dwarf or a white dwarf. The upper limits for binary separation are 210 AU and 930 AU for a dwarf and a white dwarf, respectively. We also note that the observed features of BM Gem mimic those of Mira (omi Cet), which may suggest actual similarities in their binary configurations and circumstellar structures.

Chemical Abundances in the Secondary Star of the Black Hole Binary V4641 Sagittarii (SAX J1819.3-2525)

We report on detailed spectroscopic studies performed for the secondary star in the black hole binary (micro-quasar) V4641 Sgr in order to examine its surface chemical composition and to see if its surface shows any signature of pollution by ejecta from a supernova explosion. High-resolution spectra of V4641 Sgr observed in the quiescent state in the blue-visual region are compared with those of the two bright well-studied B9 stars (14 Cyg and $ν$ Cap) observed with the same instrument. The effective temperature of V4641 Sgr (10500 $\pm$ 200 K) is estimated from the strengths of He~{\sc i} lines, while its rotational velocity, $\it v$ sin $\it i$ (95 $\pm$ 10 km s${}^{-1}$), is estimated from the profile of the Mg~{\sc ii} line at 4481 Å. We obtain abundances of 10 elements and find definite over-abundances of N (by 0.8 dex or more) and Na (by 0.8 dex) in V4641 Sgr. From line-by-line comparisons of eight other elements (C, O, Mg, Al, Si, Ti, Cr, and Fe) between V4641 Sgr and the two reference stars, we conclude that there is no apparent difference in the abundances of these elements between V4641 Sgr and the two normal late B-type stars, which have been reported to have solar abundances. An evolutionary model of a massive close binary system has been constructed to explain the abundances observed in V4641 Sgr. The model suggests that the progenitor of the black hole forming supernova was as massive as ~ 35 Msun on the main-sequence and, after becoming a ~ 10 Msun He star, underwent "dark" explosion which ejected only N and Na-rich outer layer of the He star without radioactive $^{56}$Ni.

Time-Variable Complex Metal Absorption Lines in the Quasar HS1603+3820

We present a new spectrum of the quasar HS1603+3820 taken 1.28 years (0.36 years in the quasar rest frame) after a previous observation with Subaru+HDS. The new spectrum enables us to search for time variability as an identifier of intrinsic narrow absorption lines (NALs). This quasar shows a rich complex of C IV NALs within 60,000 km/s of the emission redshift. Based on covering factor analysis, Misawa et al. found that the C IV NAL system at z_abs= 2.42--2.45 (System A, at a shift velocity of v_sh = 8,300--10,600 km/s relative to the quasar) was intrinsic to the quasar. With our new spectrum, we perform time variability analysis as well as covering factor analysis to separate intrinsic NALs from intervening NALs for 8 C IV systems. Only System A, which was identified as an intrinsic system in the earlier paper by Misawa et al., shows a strong variation in line strength (W_obs ~ 10.4A -> 19.1A). We speculate that a broad absorption line (BAL) could be forming in this quasar. We illustrate the plausibility of this suggestion with the help of a simulation. Under the assumption that a change of ionization state causes the variability, a lower limit can be placed on the electron density (n_e > 3x10^4 cm^-3) and an upper limit on the distance from the continuum source (r < 6 kpc). On the other hand, if the motion of clumpy gas causes the variability (a more likely scenario), the crossing velocity and the distance from the continuum source are estimated to be v_cross > 8,000 km/s and r < 3 pc. In this case, the absorber does not intercept any flux from the broad emission line region, but only flux from the UV continuum source. If we adopt the dynamical model of Murray et al., we can obtain a much more strict constraint on the distance of the gas parcel from the continuum source, r < 0.2 pc.
