Theoretical Study of Lithium Ionic Conductors by Electronic Stress Tensor Density and Electronic Kinetic Energy Density

We analyze the electronic structure of lithium ionic conductors, ${\rm Li_3PO_4}$ and ${\rm Li_3PS_4}$, using the electronic stress tensor density and kinetic energy density with special focus on the ionic bonds among them. We find that, as long as we examine the pattern of the eigenvalues of the electronic stress tensor density, we cannot distinguish between the ionic bonds and bonds among metalloid atoms. We then show that they can be distinguished by looking at the morphology of the electronic interface, the zero surface of the electronic kinetic energy density.

Theoretical study of atoms by the electronic kinetic energy density and stress tensor density

We analyze the electronic structure of atoms in the first, second and third periods using the electronic kinetic energy density and stress tensor density, which are local quantities motivated by quantum field theoretic consideration, specifically the rigged quantum electrodynamics. We compute the zero surfaces of the electronic kinetic energy density, which we call the electronic interfaces, of the atoms. We find that their sizes exhibit clear periodicity and are comparable to the conventional atomic and ionic radii. We also compute the electronic stress tensor density and its divergence, tension density, of the atoms, and discuss how their electronic structures are characterized by them.

Electronic stress tensor analysis of molecules in gas phase of CVD process for GeSbTe alloy

We analyze the electronic structure of molecules which may exist in gas phase of chemical vapor deposition process for GeSbTe alloy using the electronic stress tensor, with special focus on the chemical bonds between Ge, Sb and Te atoms. We find that, from the viewpoint of the electronic stress tensor, they have intermediate properties between alkali metals and hydrocarbon molecules. We also study the correlation between the bond order which is defined based on the electronic stress tensor, and energy-related quantities. We find that the correlation with the bond dissociation energy is not so strong while one with the force constant is very strong. We interpret these results in terms of the energy density on the "Lagrange surface", which is considered to define the boundary surface of atoms in a molecule in the framework of the electronic stress tensor analysis.

Study of Simulation Method of Time Evolution of Atomic and Molecular Systems by Quantum Electrodynamics

We discuss a method to follow step-by-step time evolution of atomic and molecular systems based on QED (Quantum Electrodynamics). Our strategy includes expanding the electron field operator by localized wavepackets to define creation and annihilation operators and following the time evolution using the equations of motion of the field operator in the Heisenberg picture. We first derive a time evolution equation for the excitation operator, the product of two creation or annihilation operators, which is necessary for constructing operators of physical quantities such as the electronic charge density operator. We then describe our approximation methods to obtain time differential equations of the electronic density matrix, which is defined as the expectation value of the excitation operator. By solving the equations numerically, we show "electron-positron oscillations", the fluctuations originated from virtual electron-positron pair creations and annihilations, appear in the charge density of a hydrogen atom and molecule. We also show that the period of the electron-positron oscillations becomes shorter by including the self-energy process, in which the electron emits a photon and then absorbs it again, and it can be interpreted as the increase in the electron mass due to the self-energy.

Theoretical study of lithium clusters by electronic stress tensor

We study the electronic structure of small lithium clusters Li_n (n=2-8) using the electronic stress tensor. We find that the three eigenvalues of the electronic stress tensor of the Li clusters are negative and degenerate, just like the stress tensor of liquid. This leads us to propose that we may characterize a metallic bond in terms of the electronic stress tensor. Our proposal is that in addition to the negativity of the three eigenvalues of the electronic stress tensor, their degeneracy characterizes some aspects of the metallic nature of chemical bonding. To quantify the degree of degeneracy, we use the differential eigenvalues of the electronic stress tensor. By comparing the Li clusters and hydrocarbon molecules, we show that the sign of the largest eigenvalue and the differential eigenvalues could be useful indices to evaluate the metallicity or covalency of a chemical bond.

Study of Simulation Method of Time Evolution in Rigged QED

We discuss how we formulate time evolution of physical quantities in the framework of the Rigged QED (Quantum Electrodynamics). The Rigged QED is a theory which has been proposed to treat dynamics of electrons, photons and atomic nuclei in atomic and molecular systems in a quantum field theoretic way. To solve the dynamics in the Rigged QED, we need different techniques from those developed for the conventional QED. As a first step toward this issue, we propose a procedure to expand the Dirac field operator, which represents electrons, by the electron annihilation/creation operators and solutions of the Dirac equation for electrons in nuclear potential. Similarly, the Schrodinger field operators, which represent atomic nuclei, are expanded by nucleus annihilation/creation operators. Then we derive time evolution equations for these annihilation and creation operators and discuss how time evolution of the operators for physical quantities can be calculated. In the end, we propose a method to approximate the evolution equations of the operators by the evolution equations for the density matrices of electrons and atomic nuclei. Under this approximation, we carry out numerical simulation of the time evolution of electron charge density of a hydrogen atom.

Electronic stress tensor analysis of hydrogenated palladium clusters

We study the chemical bonds of small palladium clusters Pd_n (n=2-9) saturated by hydrogen atoms using electronic stress tensor. Our calculation includes bond orders which are recently proposed based on the stress tensor. It is shown that our bond orders can classify the different types of chemical bonds in those clusters. In particular, we discuss Pd-H bonds associated with the H atoms with high coordination numbers and the difference of H-H bonds in the different Pd clusters from viewpoint of the electronic stress tensor. The notion of "pseudo-spindle structure" is proposed as the region between two atoms where the largest eigenvalue of the electronic stress tensor is negative and corresponding eigenvectors forming a pattern which connects them.

Inverted-sandwich-type and open-lantern-type dinuclear transition metal complexes: theoretical study of chemical bonds by electronic stress tensor

We study the electronic structure of two types of transition metal complexes, the inverted-sandwich-type and open-lantern-type, by the electronic stress tensor. In particular, the bond order b_e measured by the energy density which is defined from the electronic stress tensor is studied and compared with the conventional MO based bond order. We also examine the patterns found in the largest eigenvalue of the stress tensor and corresponding eigenvector field, the "spindle structure" and "pseudo-spindle structure". As for the inverted-sandwich-type complex, our bond order b_e calculation shows that relative strength of the metal-benzene bond among V, Cr and Mn complexes is V > Cr > Mn which is consistent with the MO based bond order. As for the open-lantern-type complex, we find that our energy density based bond order can properly describe the relative strength of Cr--Cr and Mo--Mo bonds by the surface integration of the energy density over the "Lagrange surface" which can take into account the spatial extent of the orbitals.

Theoretical Study of Hydrogenated Tetrahedral Aluminum Clusters

We report on the structures of aluminum hydrides derived from a tetrahedral aluminum Al4 cluster using ab initio quantum chemical calculation. Our calculation of binding energies of the aluminum hydrides reveals that stability of these hydrides increases as more hydrogen atoms are adsorbed, while stability of Al-H bonds decreases. We also analyze and discuss the chemical bonds of those clusters by using recently developed method based on the electronic stress tensor.

Electronic stress tensor of the hydrogen molecular ion: Comparison between the exact wave function and approximate wave functions using Gaussian basis sets

We investigate the electronic stress tensor of the hydrogen molecular ion for the ground state using the exact wave function and wave functions approximated by gaussian function basis set expansion. The spatial distribution of the largest eigenvalue, corresponding eigenvectors, tension and kinetic energy density are compared. We find that the cc-pV6Z basis set gives the spindle structure very close to the one calculated from the exact wave function. Similarly, energy density at the Lagrange point is very well approximated by the cc-pV5Z or cc-pV6Z basis sets.

Stress Tensor of the Hydrogen Molecular Ion

The electronic stress tensor of the hydrogen molecule ion H_2^+ is investigated for the ground state (sigma_g 1s) and the first excited state (sigma_u^* 1s) using their exact wave functions. A map of its largest eigenvalue and corresponding eigenvector is shown to be closely related to the nature of chemical bonding. For the ground state, we also show the spatial distribution of interaction energy density to describe in which part of the molecule stabilization and destabilization take place.

A Theoretical Study on a Reaction of Iron(III) Hydroxide with Boron Trichloride by Ab Initio Calculation

We investigate a reaction of boron trichloride (BCl3) with iron(III) hydroxide (Fe(OH)3) by ab initio quantum chemical calculation as a simple model for a reaction of iron impurities in BCl3 gas. We also examine a reaction with water. We find that compounds such as Fe(Cl)(OBCl2)2(OHBCl2) and Fe(Cl)2(OBCl2)(OHBCl2) are formed while producing HCl and reaction paths to them are revealed. We also analyze the stabilization mechanism of these paths using newly-developed interaction energy density derived from electronic stress tensor in the framework of the Regional DFT (Density Functional Theory) and Rigged QED (Quantum ElectroDynamics).
