Shaping the Future of Mathematics in the Age of AI

Artificial intelligence is transforming mathematics at a speed and scale that demand active engagement from the mathematical community. We examine five areas where this transformation is particularly pressing: values, practice, teaching, technology, and ethics. We offer recommendations on safeguarding our intellectual autonomy, rethinking our practice, broadening curricula, building academically oriented infrastructure, and developing shared ethical principles - with the aim of ensuring that the future of mathematics is shaped by the community itself.

The Tetrahedral (or $6j$) Symbol

We will attach a scalar invariant to a tetrahedron whose edges are labelled by irreducible representations of a ternary orthogonal group $\mathrm{SO}_3$ over a local field. This generalizes the $6j$ symbol whose theory was developed by Racah, Wigner, and Regge. We give several formulas for this invariant, including in terms of hypergeometric-type integrals and functions, and show that it admits a symmetry by the the $23040$-element Weyl group of $\mathrm{Spin}_{12}$. We then interpret these results in terms of relative Langlands duality, where the dual story comes from the action of $\mathrm{Spin}_{12}$ on a $16$-dimensional cone of spinors.

Cohomology of Fuchsian groups and Fourier interpolation

We give a new proof of a Fourier interpolation result first proved by Radchenko-Viazovska, deriving it from a vanishing result of the first cohomology of a Fuchsian group with coefficients in the Weil representation.

Relative Langlands Duality

We propose a duality in the relative Langlands program. This duality pairs a Hamiltonian space for a group $G$ with a Hamiltonian space under its dual group $\check{G}$, and recovers at a numerical level the relationship between a period on $G$ and an $L$-function attached to $\check{G}$; it is an arithmetic analog of the electric-magnetic duality of boundary conditions in four-dimensional supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory.

Universal Facial Encoding of Codec Avatars from VR Headsets

Faithful real-time facial animation is essential for avatar-mediated telepresence in Virtual Reality (VR). To emulate authentic communication, avatar animation needs to be efficient and accurate: able to capture both extreme and subtle expressions within a few milliseconds to sustain the rhythm of natural conversations. The oblique and incomplete views of the face, variability in the donning of headsets, and illumination variation due to the environment are some of the unique challenges in generalization to unseen faces. In this paper, we present a method that can animate a photorealistic avatar in realtime from head-mounted cameras (HMCs) on a consumer VR headset. We present a self-supervised learning approach, based on a cross-view reconstruction objective, that enables generalization to unseen users. We present a lightweight expression calibration mechanism that increases accuracy with minimal additional cost to run-time efficiency. We present an improved parameterization for precise ground-truth generation that provides robustness to environmental variation. The resulting system produces accurate facial animation for unseen users wearing VR headsets in realtime. We compare our approach to prior face-encoding methods demonstrating significant improvements in both quantitative metrics and qualitative results.

Some Singular Examples of Relative Langlands Duality

Relative Langlands duality structures the study of automorphic periods around a putative duality between certain group actions of Langlands dual reductive groups. In this article, after giving a self-contained exposition of the relevant ingredients from relative Langlands duality, we examine this proposal for some interesting pairs of singular spaces: one pair arising from the cone of nilpotent (3 x 3)-matrices, and the other pair arising from the nilpotent cone of (2,2,2)-tensors. These relate, respectively, to Rankin--Selberg integrals discovered by Ginzburg and Garrett.

Eisenstein cocycles in motivic cohomology

Several authors have studied homomorphisms from first homology groups of modular curves to the second K-group of a cyclotomic ring or a modular curve X. These maps send Manin symbols in the homology groups to Steinberg symbols of cyclotomic or Siegel units. We give a new construction of these maps and a direct proof of their Hecke equivariance, analogous to the construction of Siegel units using the universal elliptic curve. Our main tool is a 1-cocycle from GL_2(Z) to the second K-group of the function field of a suitable group scheme over X, from which the maps of interest arise by specialization.

Symplectic $L$-functions and symplectic Reidemeister torsion (mod squares)

We propose (and prove under some restrictions) that the square class of the central value of the $L$-function of an everywhere unramified symplectic Galois representation is given by a universal cohomological formula. This phenomenon is parallel to the appearance of metaplectic groups in quantization. In the course of the proof we also establish a topological analogue of this statement, concerning Reidemeister torsion of $3$-manifolds.

Cross-domain Variational Capsules for Information Extraction

In this paper, we present a characteristic extraction algorithm and the Multi-domain Image Characteristics Dataset of characteristic-tagged images to simulate the way a human brain classifies cross-domain information and generates insight. The intent was to identify prominent characteristics in data and use this identification mechanism to auto-generate insight from data in other unseen domains. An information extraction algorithm is proposed which is a combination of Variational Autoencoders (VAEs) and Capsule Networks. Capsule Networks are used to decompose images into their individual features and VAEs are used to explore variations on these decomposed features. Thus, making the model robust in recognizing characteristics from variations of the data. A noteworthy point is that the algorithm uses efficient hierarchical decoding of data which helps in richer output interpretation. Noticing a dearth in the number of datasets that contain visible characteristics in images belonging to various domains, the Multi-domain Image Characteristics Dataset was created and made publicly available. It consists of thousands of images across three domains. This dataset was created with the intent of introducing a new benchmark for fine-grained characteristic recognition tasks in the future.

Sparsity of Integral Points on Moduli Spaces of Varieties

Let $X$ be a quasi-projective variety over a number field, admitting (after passage to $\mathbb{C}$) a geometric variation of Hodge structure whose period mapping has zero-dimensional fibers. Then the integral points of $X$ are sparse: the number of such points of height $\leq B$ grows slower than any positive power of $B$. For example, homogeneous integral polynomials in a fixed number of variables and degree, with discriminant divisible only by a fixed set of primes, are sparse when considered up to integral linear substitutions.

The derived Hecke algebra for dihedral weight one forms

We study the action of the derived Hecke algebra in the setting of dihedral weight one forms, and prove a conjecture of the second- and fourth- named authors relating this action to certain Stark units associated to the symmetric square L-function. The proof exploits the theta correspondence between various Hecke modules as well as ideas of Merel and Lecouturier on higher Eisenstein elements.

The Galois action on symplectic $K$-theory

We study a symplectic variant of algebraic $K$-theory of the integers, which comes equipped with a canonical action of the absolute Galois group of $\mathbf{Q}$. We compute this action explicitly. The representations we see are extensions of Tate twists $\mathbf{Z}_p(2k-1)$ by a trivial representation, and we characterize them by a universal property among such extensions. The key tool in the proof is the theory of complex multiplication for abelian varieties.

The orbit method and analysis of automorphic forms

We develop the orbit method in a quantitative form, along the lines of microlocal analysis, and apply it to the analytic theory of automorphic forms. Our main global application is an asymptotic formula for averages of Gan--Gross--Prasad periods in arbitrary rank. The automorphic form on the larger group is held fixed, while that on the smaller group varies over a family of size roughly the fourth root of the conductors of the corresponding $L$-functions. Ratner's results on measure classification provide an important input to the proof. Our local results include asymptotic expansions for certain special functions arising from representations of higher rank Lie groups, such as the relative characters defined by matrix coefficient integrals as in the Ichino--Ikeda conjecture.

Diophantine problems and $p$-adic period mappings

We give an alternative proof of Faltings's theorem (Mordell's conjecture): a curve of genus at least two over a number field has finitely many rational points. Our argument utilizes the set-up of Faltings's original proof, but is in spirit closer to the methods of Chabauty and Kim: we replace the use of abelian varieties by a more detailed analysis of the variation of $p$-adic Galois representations in a family of algebraic varieties. The key inputs into this analysis are the comparison theorems of $p$-adic Hodge theory, and explicit topological computations of monodromy. By the same methods we show that, in sufficiently large dimension and degree, the set of hypersurfaces in projective space, with good reduction away from a fixed set of primes, is contained in a proper Zariski-closed subset of the moduli space of all hypersurfaces. This uses in an essential way the Ax--Schanuel property for period mappings, recently established by Bakker and Tsimerman.

Effective equidistribution and property tau

We prove a quantitative equidistribution statement for adelic homogeneous subsets whose stabilizer is maximal and semisimple. Fixing the ambient space, the statement is uniform in all parameters. We explain how this implies certain equidistribution theorems which, even in a qualitative form, are not accessible to measure-classification theorems. As another application, we describe another proof of property tau for arithmetic groups.

Derived Hecke algebra and cohomology of arithmetic groups

We describe a graded extension of the usual Hecke algebra: it acts in a graded fashion on the cohomology of an arithmetic group $Γ$. Under favorable conditions, the cohomology is freely generated in a single degree over this graded Hecke algebra. From this construction we extract an action of certain $p$-adic Galois cohomology groups on $H^*(Γ, \mathbb{Q}_p)$, and formulate the central conjecture: the motivic $\mathbb{Q}$-lattice inside these Galois cohomology groups preserves $H^*(Γ,\mathbb{Q})$.

Derived Galois deformation rings

We define a derived version of Mazur's Galois deformation ring. It is a pro-simplicial ring $\mathcal{R}$ classifying deformations of a fixed Galois representation to simplicial coefficient rings; its zeroth homotopy group $π_0 \mathcal{R}$ recovers Mazur's deformation ring. We give evidence that these rings $\mathcal{R}$ occur in the wild: For suitable Galois representations, the Langlands program predicts that $π_0 \mathcal{R}$ should act on the homology of an arithmetic group. We explain how the Taylor--Wiles method can be used to upgrade such an action to a graded action of $π_* \mathcal{R}$ on the homology.

Derived Hecke algebra for weight one forms

We study the action of the derived Hecke algebra on the space of weight one forms. By analogy with the topological case, we formulate a conjecture relating this to a certain Stark unit. We verify the truth of the conjecture numerically, for the weight one forms of level $23$ and $31$, and many derived Hecke operators at primes less than $200$. Our computation depends in an essential way on Merel's evaluation of the pairing between the Shimura and cuspidal subgroups of $J_0(q)$.
