Do Fourier analysis yield reliable amplitude of quantum oscillations?

Quantum oscillations amplitude of multiband metals, such as high T c superconductors in the normal state, heavy fermions or organic conductors are generally determined through Fourier analysis of the data even though the oscillatory part of the signal is field-dependent. It is demonstrated that the amplitude of a given Fourier component can strongly depend on both the nature of the windowing (either flat, Hahn or Blackman window) and, since oscillations are obtained within finite field range, the window width. Consequences on the determination of the Fourier amplitude, hence on the effective mass are examined in order to determine the conditions for reliable data analysis.

Importance of non-local electron correlations in BaNiS$_{2}$ semimetal from quantum oscillations studies

By means of Shubnikov-de-Haas and de-Haas-van-Alphen oscillations, and ab initio calculations, we have studied the Fermi surface of high-quality BaNiS$_2$ single crystals, with mean free path $l \sim 400 ~\textÅ$. The angle and temperature dependence of quantum oscillations indicates a quasi-two-dimensional Fermi surface, made of an electron-like tube centred at $Γ$, and of 4 hole-like cones, generated by Dirac bands, weakly dispersive in the out-of-plane direction. Ab initio electronic structure calculations, in the density functional theory framework, show that the inclusion of screened exchange is necessary to account for the experimental Fermi pockets. Therefore, the choice of the functional becomes crucial. A modified HSE hybrid functional with 7% of exact exchange outperforms both GGA and GGA+U density functionals, signalling the importance of non-local screened-exchange interactions in BaNiS$_2$, and, more generally, in $3d$ compensated semimetals.

de Haas-van Alphen oscillations with non-parabolic dispersions

de Haas-van Alphen oscillation spectrum of two-dimensional systems is studied for general power law energy dispersion, yielding a Fermi surface area of the form $S(E)\propto E^α$ for a given energy $E$. The case $α=1$ stands for the parabolic energy dispersion. It is demonstrated that the periodicity of the magnetic oscillations in inverse field can depend notably on the temperature. We evaluated analytically the Fourier spectrum of these oscillations to evidence the frequency shift and smearing of the main peak structure as the temperature increases.

Quantum oscillations of a linear chain of coupled orbits with small effective masses: the organic metal $θ$-(BETS) 4 CoBr 4 (C 6 H 4 Cl 2 )

De Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) and Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations of the organic metal $θ$-(BETS) 4 CoBr 4 (C 6 H 4 Cl 2) are studied in magnetic fields of up to 55 T at liquid helium temperatures. In line with Fermi surfaces (FS) illustrating the linear chain of coupled orbits, the observed Fourier components are linear combinations of the frequencies linked to the two basic orbits $α$ and $β$, which have small effective masses compared to other organic metals with the same FS topology. Analytical formulas based on a second order development of the free energy within the canonical ensemble, not only account for the field and temperature dependence of the dHvA amplitudes but also for their relative values. In addition, strongly non-Lifshitz-Kosevich behaviours are quantitatively interpreted. In contrast, Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations are not accounted for by this model. short title: Quantum oscillations of $θ$-(BETS) 4 CoBr 4 (C 6 H 4 Cl 2)

Transmission and tunneling probability in two-band metals: influence of magnetic breakdown on the Onsager phase of quantum oscillations

Tunneling amplitude through magnetic breakdown (MB) gap is considered for two bands Fermi surfaces illustrated in many organic metals. In particular, the S-matrix associated to the wave-function transmission through the MB gap for the relevant class of differential equations is the main object allowing the determination of tunneling probabilities and phases. The calculated transmission coefficients include a field-dependent Onsager phase. As a result, quantum oscillations are not periodic in 1/B for finite magnetic breakdown gap. Exact and approximate methods are proposed for computing ratio amplitudes of the wave-function in interacting two-band models.

New insights on frequency combinations and 'forbidden frequencies' in de Haas-van Alphen spectrum of \k{appa}-(ET) 2 Cu(SCN) 2

De Haas-van Alphen oscillations of the organic metal \k{appa}-(ET) 2 Cu(SCN) 2 have been measured up to 55 T at liquid helium temperatures. The Fermi surface of this charge transfer salt is a textbook example of linear chain of orbits coupled by magnetic breakdown. Accordingly, the oscillation spectrum is composed of linear combinations of the frequencies linked to the $α$ and magnetic breakdown-induced $β$ orbits. The field and temperature dependence of all the observed Fourier components, in particular the "forbidden frequency" $β$ -- $α$ which cannot correspond to a classical orbit, are quantitatively accounted for by analytical calculations based on a second order development of the free energy, i.e. beyond the first order Lifshitz-Kosevich formula.

Effect of electronic band dispersion curvature on de Haas-van Alphen oscillations

The effect of electronic band curvature, i.e. the deviation from parabolicity of electronic dispersion, on de Haas-van Alphen oscillations spectra is studied. Although the oscillations amplitude remain unaffected, it is demonstrated that non-quadratic terms of the Landau bands dispersion, which is particularly relevant in the case of Dirac fermions, induces a field- and temperature-dependent Onsager phase. As a result, a temperature-dependent shift of the de Haas-van Alphen oscillations frequency is predicted.

Non-Lifshitz-Kosevich field-and temperature-dependent amplitude of quantum oscillations in the quasi-two dimensional metal $θ$-(ET) 4 ZnBr 4 (C 6 H 4 Cl 2 )

According to band structure calculations, the Fermi surface of the quasi-two dimensional metal $θ$-(ET) 4 ZnBr 4 (C 6 H 4 Cl 2) illustrates the linear chain of coupled orbits model. Accordingly, de Haas-van Alphen oscillations spectra recorded in pulsed magnetic field of up to 55 T evidence many Fourier components, the frequency of which are linear combinations of the frequencies relevant to the closed $α$ and the magnetic breakdown $β$ orbits. The field and temperature dependence of these component's amplitude are quantitatively accounted for by analytic calculations including, beyond the Lifshitz-Kosevich formula, second order terms in damping factors due to the oscillation of the chemical potential as the magnetic field varies. Whereas these second order terms are negligible for the orbits $α$, $β$ and 2$β$ -- $α$, they are solely responsible for the 'forbidden orbit' $β$ -- $α$ and its harmonic and have a significant influence on Fourier components such as 2$α$ and $β$ + $α$, yielding strongly non-Lifshitz-Kosevich behaviour in the latter case.

Quantum oscillations and upper critical magnetic field of the iron-based superconductor FeSe

Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations and upper critical magnetic field ($H\_{c2}$) of the iron-based superconductor FeSe ($T\_c$ = 8.6 K) have been studied by tunnel diode oscillator-based measurements in magnetic fields of up to 55 T and temperatures down to 1.6 K. Several Fourier components enter the SdH oscillations spectrum with frequencies definitely smaller than predicted by band structure calculations indicating band renormalization and reconstruction of the Fermi surface at low temperature, in line with previous ARPES data. The Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg model accounts for the temperature dependence of $H\_{c2}$ for magnetic field applied both parallel (\textbf{H} $\|$ $ab$) and perpendicular (\textbf{H} $\|$ $c$) to the iron conducting plane, suggesting that one band mainly controls the superconducting properties in magnetic fields despite the multiband nature of the Fermi surface. Whereas Pauli pair breaking is negligible for \textbf{H} $\|$ $c$, a Pauli paramagnetic contribution is evidenced for \textbf{H} $\|$ $ab$ with Maki parameter $α$ = 2.1, corresponding to Pauli field $H\_{P}$ = 36.5 T

De Haas-van Alphen oscillations in the compensated organic metal alpha-'pseudo-kappa'-(ET)4H3O[Fe(C2O4)3].(C6H4Br2)

Field-, temperature- and angle-dependent Fourier amplitude of de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations are calculated for compensated two-dimensional (2D) metals with textbook Fermi surface (FS) composed of one hole and two electron orbits connected by magnetic breakdown. It is demonstrated that, taking into account the opposite sign of electron and hole orbits, a given Fourier component involves combination of several orbits, the contribution of which must be included in the calculations. Such FS is observed in the strongly 2D organic metal alpha-'pseudo-kappa'-(ET)4H3O[Fe(C2O4)3].(C6H4Br2), dHvA oscillations of which have been studied up to 55 T for various directions of the magnetic field with respect to the conducting plane. Calculations are in good quantitative agreement with the data.

Tunnel diode oscillator measurements of the upper critical magnetic field of FeTe0:5Se0:5

Temperature dependence of the upper critical magnetic field (Hc2) of single crystalline FeTe0.5Se0.5 (Tc = 14.5 K) have been determined by tunnel diode oscillator-based measurements in magnetic fields of up to 55 T and temperatures down to 1.6 K. The Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg model accounts for the data for magnetic field applied both parallel (H || ab) and perpendicular (H || c) to the iron conducting plane, in line with a single band superconductivity. Whereas Pauli pair breaking is negligible for H || c, Pauli contribution is evidenced for H || ab with Maki parameter alpha= 1.4, corresponding to Pauli field HP = 79 T. As a result, the Hc2 anisotropy (= Habc2 /Hcc2) which is already rather small at Tc (gamma = 1.6) further decreases as the temperature decreases and becomes smaller than 1 at liquid helium temperatures.

Recent developments in the determination of the amplitude and phase of quantum oscillations for the linear chain of coupled orbits

De Haas-van Alphen oscillations are studied for Fermi surfaces (FS) illustrating the model proposed by Pippard in the early sixties, namely the linear chain of orbits coupled by magnetic breakdown. This FS topology is relevant for many multiband quasi-two dimensional (q-2D) organic metals such as $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu(NCS)$_2$ and $θ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_4$CoBr$_4$(C$_6$H$_4$Cl$_2$) which are considered in detail. Whereas the Lifshits-Kosevich model only involves a first order development of field- and temperature-dependent damping factors, second order terms may have significant contribution on the Fourier components amplitude for such q-2D systems at high magnetic field and low temperature. The strength of these second order terms depends on the relative value of the involved damping factors, which are in turns strongly dependent on parameters such as the magnetic breakdown field, effective masses and, most of all, effective Landé factors. In addition, the influence of field-dependent Onsager phase factors on the oscillation spectra is considered.

Onsager phase factor of quantum oscillations in the organic metal theta-(BEDT-TTF)4CoBr4(C6H4Cl2)

De Haas-van Alphen oscillations are studied for Fermi surfaces illustrating the Pippard's model, commonly observed in multiband organic metals. Field- and temperature-dependent amplitude of the various Fourier components, linked to frequency combinations arising from magnetic breakdown between different bands, are considered. Emphasis is put on the Onsager phase factor of these components. It is demonstrated that, in addition to the usual Maslov index, field-dependent phase factors must be considered to precisely account for the data at high magnetic field. We present compelling evidence of the existence of such contributions for the organic metal theta-(BEDT-TTF)4CoBr4(C6H4Cl2).

Organic conductors in high magnetic fields: model systems for quantum oscillations physics

Even though organic conductors have complicated crystalline structure with low symmetry and large unit cell, band structure calculations predict multiband quasi-two dimensional electronic structure yielding very simple Fermi surface in most cases. Although few puzzling experimental results are observed, data of numerous compounds are in agreement with calculations which make them suitable systems for studying magnetic quantum oscillations in networks of orbits connected by magnetic breakdown. The state of the art of this problematics is reviewed.

Quantum oscillations in the linear chain of coupled orbits: the organic metal with two cation layers theta-(ET)(4)CoBr(4)(C(6)H(4)Cl(2))

Analytical formulae for de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations in linear chain of coupled two-dimensional (2D) orbits (Pippard's model) are derived systematically taking into account the chemical potential oscillations in magnetic field. Although corrective terms are observed, basic (alpha) and magnetic breakdown-induced (beta and 2beta - alpha) orbits can be accounted for by the Lifshits-Kosevich (LK) and Falicov-Stachowiak semiclassical models in the explored field and temperature ranges. In contrast, the 'forbidden orbit' beta - alpha amplitude is described by a non-LK equation involving a product of two classical orbit amplitudes. Furthermore, strongly non-monotonic field and temperature dependence may be observed for the second harmonics of basic frequencies such as 2alpha and the magnetic breakdown orbit beta + alpha, depending on the value of the spin damping factors. These features are in agreement with the dHvA oscillation spectra of the strongly 2D organic metal theta- theta-(ET)(4)CoBr(4)(C(6)H(4)Cl(2)).

Temperature- and pressure-dependent metallic states in (BEDT-TTF)8[Hg4Br12(C6H5Br)2]

Temperature-driven metal-insulator and pressure-driven insulator-metal transitions observed in(BEDT-TTF)8[Hg4X12(C6H5Y)2]] with X = Y = Br are studied through band structure calculations based on X-ray crystal structure determination and Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations spectra, respectively. In connection with chemical pressure effect, the transition, which is not observed for X = Cl, is due to gap opening linked to structural changes as the temperature decreases. Even though many body interactions can be inferred from the pressure dependence of the SdH oscillations spectra, all the data can be described within a Fermi liquid picture.

Quantum oscillations in underdoped YBa_2Cu_3O_6.5

Shubnikov-de Haas and de Haas-van Alphen effects have been measured in the underdoped high temperature superconductor YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.51}$. Data are in agreement with the standard Lifshitz-Kosevitch theory, which confirms the presence of a coherent Fermi surface in the ground state of underdoped cuprates. A low frequency $F = 530 \pm 10$ T is reported in both measurements, pointing to small Fermi pocket, which corresponds to 2% of the first Brillouin zone area only. This low value is in sharp contrast with that of overdoped Tl$_2$Ba$_2$CuO$_{6+δ}$, where a high frequency $F = 18$ kT has been recently reported and corresponds to a large hole cylinder in agreement with band structure calculations. These results point to a radical change in the topology of the Fermi surface on opposing sides of the cuprate phase diagram.

Multiple Quantum Oscillations in the de Haas van Alphen Spectra of the Underdoped High Temperature Superconductor YBa_2Cu_3O_6.5

By improving the experimental conditions and extensive data accumulation, we have achieved very high-precision in the measurements of the de Haas-van Alphen effect in the underdoped high-temperature superconductor YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6.5}$. We find that the main oscillation, so far believed to be single-frequency, is composed of three closely spaced frequencies. We attribute this to bilayer splitting and warping of a single quasi-2D Fermi surface, indicating that \emph{c}-axis coherence is restored at low temperature in underdoped cuprates. Our results do not support the existence of a larger frequency of the order of 1650 T reported recently in the same compound [S.E. Sebastian {\it et al}., Nature {\bf 454}, 200 (2008)].
