Lagrangian and Hamiltonian constraints for guiding-center Hamiltonian theories

A consistent guiding-center Hamiltonian theory is derived by Lie-transform perturbation method, with terms up to second order in magnetic-field nonuniformity. Consistency is demonstrated by showing that the guiding-center transformation presented here satisfies separate Jacobian and Lagrangian constraints that have not been explored before. A new first-order term appearing in the guiding-center phase-space Lagrangian is identified through a calculation of the guiding-center polarization. It is shown that this new polarization term also yields a simpler expression of the guiding-center toroidal canonical momentum, which satisfies an exact conservation law in axisymmetric magnetic geometries. Lastly, an application of the guiding-center Lagrangian constraint on the guiding-center Hamiltonian yields a natural interpretation for its higher-order corrections.

Guiding-center transformation of the radiation-reaction force in a nonuniform magnetic field

In this paper, we present the guiding-center transformation of the radiation-reaction force of a classical point charge traveling in a nonuniform magnetic field. The transformation is valid as long as the gyroradius of the charged particles is much smaller than the magnetic field nonuniformity length scale, so that the guiding-center Lie-transform method is applicable. Elimination of the gyromotion time scale from the radiation-reaction force is obtained with the Poisson bracket formalism originally introduced by [A. J. Brizard, Phys. Plasmas 11 4429 (2004)], where it was used to eliminate the fast gyromotion from the Fokker-Planck collision operator. The formalism presented here is applicable to the motion of charged particles in planetary magnetic fields as well as in magnetic confinement fusion plasmas, where the corresponding so-called synchrotron radiation can be detected. Applications of the guiding-center radiation-reaction force include tracing of charged particle orbits in complex magnetic fields as well as kinetic description of plasma when the loss of energy and momentum due to radiation plays an important role, e.g., for runaway electron dynamics in tokamaks.

Exact conservation laws for truncated gyrokinetic Vlasov-Poisson equations

The purpose of the current work is adapting the results of the Noether method derivation of momentum transport equation for the gyrokinetic Vlasov-Poisson system to numerical implementations. In particular, we are considering the delta-f truncated Gyrokinetic Vlasov-Poisson system and we derive the exact momentum conservation laws via the Noether method.

Monte Carlo implementation of a guiding-center Fokker-Planck kinetic equation

A Monte Carlo method for the collisional guiding-center Fokker-Planck kinetic equation is derived to include the effects of background magnetic-field nonuniformity. It is shown that, in the limit of a homogeneous magnetic field, the guiding-center Monte Carlo collision operators reduce to the standard Coulomb operators. The coefficients required for the implementation of the method are also given.

Hamiltonian formulation of reduced Vlasov-Maxwell equations

The Hamiltonian formulation of the reduced Vlasov-Maxwell equations is expressed in terms of the macroscopic fields D and H. These macroscopic fields are themselves expressed in terms of the functional Lie-derivative generated by the functional S with the Poisson bracket [.,.] for the exact Vlasov-Maxwell equations. Hence, the polarization vector P= (D-E)/(4pi) and the magnetization vector M=(B-H)/(4pi) are defined in terms of the expressions 4pi P=[S,E]+... and 4pi M =-[S,B]+..., where lowest-order terms yield dipole contributions.

Comment on "Geometric phase of the gyromotion for charged particles in a time-dependent magnetic field" [Phys. Plasmas 18, 072505 (2011)]

The geometric analysis of the gyromotion for charged particles in a time-dependent magnetic field by J. Liu and H. Qin [Phys. Plasmas 18, 072505 (2011)] is reformulated in terms of the spatial angles that represent the instantaneous orientation of the magnetic field. This new formulation, which includes the equation of motion for the pitch angle, clarifies the decomposition of the gyroangle-averaged equation of motion for the gyrophase into its dynamic and geometric contributions.

Hamiltonian Theory of Adiabatic Motion of Relativistic Charged Particles

A general Hamiltonian theory for the adiabatic motion of relativistic charged particles confined by slowly-varying background electromagnetic fields is presented based on a unified Lie-transform perturbation analysis in extended phase space (which includes energy and time as independent coordinates) for all three adiabatic invariants. First, the guiding-center equations of motion for a relativistic particle are derived from the particle Lagrangian. Covariant aspects of the resulting relativistic guiding-center equations of motion are discussed and contrasted with previous works. Next, the second and third invariants for the bounce motion and drift motion, respectively, are obtained by successively removing the bounce phase and the drift phase from the guiding-center Lagrangian. First-order corrections to the second and third adiabatic invariants for a relativistic particle are derived. These results simplify and generalize previous works to all three adiabatic motions of relativistic magnetically-trapped particles.
