Slow-roll inflation and CMB anisotropy data

We emphasize that the estimation of cosmological parameters from cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy data, such as the recent high resolution maps from BOOMERanG and MAXIMA-1, requires assumptions about the primordial spectra. The latter are predicted from inflation. The physically best-motivated scenario is that of slow-roll inflation. However, very often, the unphysical power-law inflation scenario is (implicitly) assumed in the CMB data analysis. We show that the predicted multipole moments differ significantly in both cases. We identify several misconceptions present in the literature (and in the way inflationary relations are often combined in popular numerical codes). For example, we do not believe that, generically, inflation predicts the relation n_S - 1 = n_T for the spectral indices of scalar and tensor perturbations or that gravitational waves are negligible. We calculate the CMB multipole moments for various values of the slow-roll parameters and demonstrate that an important part of the space of parameters (n_S, n_T) has been overlooked in the CMB data analysis so far.

Quintessence and Gravitational Waves

We investigate some aspects of quintessence models with a non-minimally coupled scalar field and in particular we show that it can behave as a component of matter with $-3 \lesssim P/ρ\lesssim 0$. We study the properties of gravitational waves in this class of models and discuss their energy spectrum and the cosmic microwave background anisotropies they induce. We also show that gravitational waves are damped by the anisotropic stress of the radiation and that their energy spectrum may help to distinguish between inverse power law potential and supergravity motivated potential. We finish by a discussion on the constraints arising from their density parameter $Ω_\GW$.

Exhaustive Study of Cosmic Microwave Background Anisotropies in Quintessential Scenarios

Recent high precision measurements of the CMB anisotropies performed by the BOOMERanG and MAXIMA-1 experiments provide an unmatched set of data allowing to probe different cosmological models. Among these scenarios, motivated by the recent measurements of the luminosity distance versus redshift relation for type Ia supernovae, is the quintessence hypothesis. It consists in assuming that the acceleration of the Universe is due to a scalar field whose final evolution is insensitive to the initial conditions. Within this framework we investigate the cosmological perturbations for two well-motivated potentials: the Ratra-Peebles and the SUGRA tracking potentials. We show that the solutions of the perturbed equations possess an attractor and that, as a consequence, the insensitivity to the initial conditions is preserved at the perturbed level. Then, we study the predictions of these two models for structure formation and CMB anisotropies and investigate the general features of the multipole moments in the presence of quintessence. We also compare the CMB multipoles calculated with the help of a full Boltzmann code with the BOOMERanG and MAXIMA-1 data. We pay special attention to the location of the second peak and demonstrate that it significantly differs from the location obtained in the cosmological constant case. Finally, we argue that the SUGRA potential is compatible with all the recent data with a standard values of the cosmological parameters. In particular, it fits the MAXIMA-1 data better than a cosmological constant or the Ratra-Peebles potential.

Cosmic microwave background anisotropies seeded by incoherent sources

The cosmic microwave background anisotropies produced by active seeds, such as topological defects, have been computed recently for a variety of models by a number of authors. In this paper we show how the generic features of the anisotropies caused by active, incoherent, seeds (that is the absence of acoustic peaks at small scales) can be obtained semi-analytically, without entering into the model dependent details of their formation, structure and evolution.

Correlated mixtures of adiabatic and isocurvature cosmological perturbations

The Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropies measurements can provide many clues about the Universe. Although the common belief is that they will allow a very precise measurement of the cosmological parameters (that is, the current state of the Universe), they will alternatively give interesting informations about the state of the initial perturbations (that is, the state of the Universe at the end of inflation). In this paper, we study the observational consequences on the CMB anisotropies of some wide set of inital conditions, with a correlated mixture of adiabatic and isocurvature perturbations.

Topological Defects and CMB anisotropies : Are the predictions reliable ?

We consider a network of topological defects which can partly decay into neutrinos, photons, baryons, or Cold Dark Matter. We find that the degree-scale amplitude of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies as well as the shape of the matter power spectrum can be considerably modified when such a decay is taken into account. We conclude that present predictions concerning structure formation by defects might be unreliable.

Correlated mixtures of adiabatic and isocurvature cosmological perturbations

We examine the consequences of the existence of correlated mixtures of adiabatic and isocurvature perturbations on the CMB and large scale structure. In particular, we consider the four types of ``elementary'' totally correlated hybrid initial conditions, where only one of the four matter species (photons, baryons, neutrinos, CDM) deviates from adiabaticity. We then study the height and position of the acoustic peaks with respect to the large angular scale plateau as a function of the isocurvature to adiabatic ratio.

Cosmic microwave background anisotropies seeded by coherent topological defects : a semi-analytic approach

We consider a perfectly homogeneous, isotropic and spatially flat universe which undergoes a sudden phase transition producing topological defects. We assume that these defects form a coherent network which scales like the background density during the radiation and matter dominated eras, and describe them in terms of a few free functions. We carefully model the loss of scaling invariance during the transition from radiation to matter dominated era. We choose a simple set for the free functions, compute the microwave background temperature anisotropies generated by such a network, and compare our results to previous calculations.

Non-Vacuum Initial States for Cosmological Perturbations of Quantum-Mechanical Origin

In the context of inflation, non-vacuum initial states for cosmological perturbations that possess a built in scale are studied. It is demonstrated that this assumption leads to a falsifiable class of models. The question of whether they lead to conflicts with the available observations is addressed. For this purpose, the power spectrum of the Bardeen potential operator is calculated and compared with the CMBR anisotropies measurements and the redshift surveys of galaxies and clusters of galaxies. Generic predictions of the model are: a high first acoustic peak, the presence of a bump in the matter power spectrum and non-Gaussian statistics. The details are controlled by the number of quanta in the non-vacuum initial state. Comparisons with observations show that there exists a window for the free parameters such that good agreement between the data and the theoretical predictions is possible. However, in the case where the initial state is a state with a fixed number of quanta, it is shown that this number cannot be greater than a few. On the other hand, if the initial state is a quantum superposition, then a larger class of initial states could account for the observations, even though the state cannot be too different from the vacuum. Planned missions such as the MAP and Planck satellites and the Sloan Survey, will demonstrate whether the new class of models proposed here represents a viable alternative to the standard theory.
