The Local Index Formula in Semifinite von Neumann Algebras II: The Even Case

We generalise the even local index formula of Connes and Moscovici to the case of spectral triples for a *-subalgebra \A of a general semifinite von Neumann algebra. The proof is a variant of that for the odd case which appears in Part I. To allow for algebras with a non-trivial centre we have to establish a theory of unbounded Fredholm operators in a general semifinite von Neumann algebra and in particular prove a generalised McKean-Singer formula.

Holonomy on D-Branes

This paper shows how to construct anomaly free world sheet actions in string theory with $D$-branes. Our method is to use Deligne cohomology and bundle gerbe theory to define geometric objects which are naturally associated to $D$-branes and connections on them. The holonomy of these connections can be used to cancel global anomalies in the world sheet action.

Spectral flow in Fredholm modules, eta invariants and the JLO cocycle

We give a comprehensive account of an analytic approach to spectral flow along paths of self-adjoint Breuer-Fredholm operators in a type $I_{\infty}$ or $II_\infty$ von Neumann algebra ${\mathcal N}$. The framework is that of {\it odd unbounded} $θ$-{\it summable} {\it Breuer-Fredholm modules} for a unital Banach *-algebra, $\mathcal A$. In the type $II_{\infty}$ case spectral flow is real-valued, has no topological definition as an intersection number and our formulae encompass all that is known. We borrow Ezra Getzler's idea (suggested by I. M. Singer) of considering spectral flow (and eta invariants) as the integral of a closed one-form on an affine space. Applications in both the type I and type II cases include a general formula for the relative index of two projections, representing truncated eta functions as integrals of one forms and expressing spectral flow in terms of the JLO cocycle to give the pairing of the $K$-homology and $K$-theory of $\mathcal A$.

Seiberg-Witten-Floer Homology and Gluing Formulae

This paper gives a detailed construction of Seiberg-Witten-Floer homology for a closed oriented 3-manifold with a non-torsion $\spinc$ structure. Gluing formulae for certain 4-dimensional manifolds splitting along an embedded 3-manifold are obtained.

The universal gerbe, Dixmier-Douady class, and gauge theory

We clarify the relation between the Dixmier-Douady class on the space of self adjoint Fredholm operators (`universal B-field') and the curvature of determinant bundles over infinite-dimensional Grassmannians. In particular, in the case of Dirac type operators on a three dimensional compact manifold we obtain a simple and explicit expression for both forms.

Loop groups, anyons and the Calogero-Sutherland model

The positive energy representations of the loop group of U(1) are used to construct a boson-anyon correspondence. We compute all the correlation functions of our anyon fields and study an anyonic W-algebra of unbounded operators with a common dense domain. This algebra contains an operator with peculiar exchange relations with the anyon fields. This operator can be interpreted as a second quantised Calogero-Sutherland (CS) Hamiltonian and may be used to solve the CS model. In particular, we inductively construct all eigenfunctions of the CS model from anyon correlation functions, for all particle numbers and positive couplings.

Correspondences, von Neumann algebras and holomorphic L^2 torsion

Given a holomorphic Hilbertian bundle on a compact complex manifold, we introduce the notion of holomorphic $L^2$ torsion, which lies in the determinant line of the twisted $L^2$ Dolbeault cohomology and represents a volume element there. Here we utilise the theory of determinant lines of Hilbertian modules over finite von Neumann algebras as developed in an earlier paper by the authors. This specialises to the Ray-Singer-Quillen holomorphic torsion in the finite dimensional case. We compute a metric variation formula for the holomorphic $L^2$ torsion, which shows that it is not in general independent of the choice of Hermitian metrics on the complex manifold and on the holomorphic Hilbertian bundle, which are needed to define it. We therefore initiate the theory of correspondences of determinant lines, that enables us to define a relative holomorphic $L^2$ torsion for a pair of flat Hilbertian bundles, which we prove is independent of the choice of Hermitian metrics on the complex manifold and on the flat Hilbertian bundles.

Principal Bundles and the Dixmier Douady Class

A systematic consideration of the problem of the reduction and extension of the structure group of a principal bundle is made and a variety of techniques in each case are explored and related to one another. We apply these to the study of the Dixmier-Douady class in various contexts including string structures, U-res bundles and other examples motivated by considerations from quantum field theory.

Von Neumann spectra near the spectral gap

In this paper we study some new von Neumann spectral invariants associated to the Laplacian acting on L^2 differential forms on the universal cover of a closed manifold. These invariants coincide with the Novikov-Shubin invariants whenever there is no spectral gap in the spectrum of the Laplacian, and are homotopy invariants in this case. In the presence of a spectral gap, they differ in character and value from the Novikov-Shubin invariants. Under a positivity assumption on these invariants, we prove that certain L^2 theta and L^2 zeta functions defined by metric dependent combinatorial Laplacians acting on $L^2$ cochains associated with a triangulation of the manifold, converge uniformly to their analytic counterparts, as the mesh of the triangulation goes to zero.
