Hybrid Workflow Composition for Extreme-Scale Data Processing: A Case Study on the HL-LHC (Extended Version)

High-Throughput Computing (HTC) environments tailored for high-concurrency resource efficiency require sophisticated orchestration to manage petabyte-scale data across heterogeneous resources. A critical but often overlooked challenge is workflow composition: the strategic grouping of tasksets within a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) to mitigate execution overhead while maximizing resource utilization. This paper presents a novel simulation framework for characterizing the interplay between taskset granularity and system-level constraints (e.g., job latency, failure rate, throughput, and I/O bandwidth). By exploring a high-dimensional parameter space, we quantify the performance sensitivity of diverse workflow topologies. Our results demonstrate that hybrid composition strategies, which dynamically balance taskset independence with execution grouping, can yield up to 3.8x throughput increase and a 14.9x reduction in network overhead. We further propose a multi-metric objective function that enables policy-driven optimization, allowing system architects to navigate the Pareto frontier between throughput, I/O cost, and CPU efficiency. These findings provide a rigorous foundation for automated workflow synthesis in distributed systems, offering a scalable model for next-generation scientific pipelines. CMS Token Transition

Within the LHC community, a momentous transition has been occurring in authorization. For nearly 20 years, services within the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG) have authorized based on mapping an identity, derived from an X.509 credential, or a group/role, derived from a VOMS extension issued by the experiment. A fundamental shift is occurring to capabilities: the credential, a bearer token, asserts the authorizations of the bearer, not the identity. By the HL-LHC era, the CMS experiment plans for the transition to tokens, based on the WLCG Common JSON Web Token profile, to be complete. Services in the technology architecture include the INDIGO Identity and Access Management server to issue tokens; a HashiCorp Vault server to store and refresh access tokens for users and jobs; a managed token bastion server to push credentials to the HTCondor CredMon service; and HTCondor to maintain valid tokens in long-running batch jobs. We will describe the transition plans of the experiment, current status, configuration of the central authorization server, lessons learned in commissioning token-based access with sites, and operational experience using tokens for both job submissions and file transfers.

Analysis Cyberinfrastructure: Challenges and Opportunities

Analysis cyberinfrastructure refers to the combination of software and computer hardware used to support late-stage data analysis in High Energy Physics (HEP). For the purposes of this white paper, late-stage data analysis refers specifically to the step of transforming the most reduced common data format produced by a given experimental collaboration (for example, nanoAOD for the CMS experiment) into histograms. In this white paper, we reflect on observations gathered from a recent experience with data analysis using a recent, python-based analysis framework, and extrapolate these experiences though the High-Luminosity LHC era as way of highlighting potential R\&D topics in analysis cyberinfrastructure.
