Cyclic polynomials in two variables

We give a complete characterization of polynomials in two complex variables that are cyclic with respect to the coordinate shifts acting on Dirichlet-type spaces in the bidisk, which include the Hardy space and the Dirichlet space of the bidisk. The cyclicity of a polynomial depends on both the size and nature of the zero set of the polynomial on the distinguished boundary. The techniques in the proof come from real analytic function theory, determinantal representations for stable polynomials, and harmonic analysis on curves

Small particle limits in a regularized Laplacian random growth model

We study a regularized version of Hastings-Levitov planar random growth that models clusters formed by the aggregation of diffusing particles. In this model, the growing clusters are defined in terms of iterated slit maps whose capacities are given by c_n=c|Φ_{n-1}'(e^{σ+iθ_n})|^{-α}, α\geq 0, where c>0 is the capacity of the first particle, {Φ_n}_n are the composed conformal maps defining the clusters of the evolution, {θ_n}_n are independent uniform angles determining the positions at which particles are attached, and σ>0 is a regularization parameter which we take to depend on c. We prove that under an appropriate rescaling of time, in the limit as c converges to 0, the clusters converge to growing disks with deterministic capacities, provided that σdoes not converge to 0 too fast. We then establish scaling limits for the harmonic measure flow, showing that by letting αtend to 0 at different rates it converges to either the Brownian web on the circle, a stopped version of the Brownian web on the circle, or the identity map. As the harmonic measure flow is closely related to the internal branching structure within the cluster, the above three cases intuitively correspond to the number of infinite branches in the model being either 1, a random number whose distribution we obtain, or unbounded, in the limit as c converges to 0. We also present several findings based on simulations of the model with parameter choices not covered by our rigorous analysis.

Cyclicity in Dirichlet-type spaces and extremal polynomials

For functions $f$ in Dirichlet-type spaces we study how to determine constructively optimal polynomials $p_n$ that minimize $\|p f-1\|_α$ among all polynomials $p$ of degree at most $n$. Then we give upper and lower bounds for the rate of decay of $\|p_{n}f-1\|_α$ as $n$ approaches $\infty$. Further, we study a generalization of a weak version of the Brown-Shields conjecture and some computational phenomena about the zeros of optimal polynomials.

Scaling limits of anisotropic Hastings-Levitov clusters

We consider a variation of the standard Hastings-Levitov model HL(0), in which growth is anisotropic. Two natural scaling limits are established and we give precise descriptions of the effects of the anisotropy. We show that the limit shapes can be realised as Loewner hulls and that the evolution of harmonic measure on the cluster boundary can be described by the solution to a deterministic ordinary differential equation related to the Loewner equation. We also characterise the stochastic fluctuations around the deterministic limit flow.

Rescaled Levy-Loewner hulls and random growth

We consider radial Loewner evolution driven by unimodular Lévy processes. We rescale the hulls of the evolution by capacity, and prove that the weak limit of the rescaled hulls exists. We then study a random growth model obtained by driving the Loewner equation with a compound Poisson process. The process involves two real parameters: the intensity of the underlying Poisson process and a localization parameter of the Poisson kernel which determines the jumps. A particular choice of parameters yields a growth process similar to the Hastings-Levitov $\rm{HL}(0)$ model. We describe the asymptotic behavior of the hulls with respect to the parameters, showing that growth tends to become localized as the jump parameter increases. We obtain deterministic evolutions in one limiting case, and Loewner evolution driven by a unimodular Cauchy process in another. We show that the Hausdorff dimension of the limiting rescaled hulls is equal to 1. Using a different type of compound Poisson process, where the Poisson kernel is replaced by the heat kernel, as driving function, we recover one case of the aforementioned model and $\rm{SLE}(κ)$ as limits.
