All principal congruence link groups

We enumerate all the principal congruence link complements in $S^3$, there by answering a question of W. Thurston. Related articles: "Technical Report: All Principal Congruence Link Groups" (arXiv:1902.04722), "All Known Principal Congruence Links" (arXiv:1902.04426).

Technical Report: All Principal Congruence Link Groups

This is a technical report accompanying the paper "All Principal Congruence Link Groups" (arXiv:1802.01275) classifying all principal congruence link complements in S^3 by the same authors. It provides a complete overview of all cases (d,I) that had to be considered, as well as describes the necessary computations and computer programs written for the classification result.

Embedding arithmetic hyperbolic manifolds

We prove that any arithmetic hyperbolic $n$-manifold of simplest type can either be geodesically embedded into an arithmetic hyperbolic $(n+1)$-manifold or its universal $\mathrm{mod}~2$ Abelian cover can.

Profinite rigidity and surface bundles over the circle

If $M$ is a compact 3-manifold whose first betti number is 1, and $N$ is a compact 3-manifold such that $π_1N$ and $π_1M$ have the same finite quotients, then $M$ fibres over the circle if and only if $N$ does. We prove that groups of the form $F_2\rtimes\mathbb{Z}$ are distinguished from one another by their profinite completions. Thus, regardless of betti number, if $M$ and $N$ are punctured torus bundles over the circle and $M$ is not homeomorphic to $N$, then there is a finite group $G$ such that one of $π_1M$ and $π_1N$ maps onto $G$ and the other does not.

Determining Fuchsian groups by their finite quotients

Let $\C(Γ)$ be the set of isomorphism classes of the finite groups that are homomorphic images of $Γ$. We investigate the extent to which $\C(Γ)$ determines $Γ$ when $Γ$ is a group of geometric interest. If $Γ_1$ is a lattice in ${\rm{PSL}}(2,\R)$ and $Γ_2$ is a lattice in any connected Lie group, then $\C(Γ_1) = \C(Γ_2)$ implies that $Γ_1$ is isomorphic to $Γ_2$. If $F$ is a free group and $Γ$ is a right-angled Artin group or a residually free group (with one extra condition), then $\C(F)=\C(Γ)$ implies that $F\congΓ$. If $Γ_1<{\rm{PSL}}(2,\Bbb C)$ and $Γ_2< G$ are non-uniform arithmetic lattices, where $G$ is a semi-simple Lie group with trivial centre and no compact factors, then $\C(Γ_1)= \C(Γ_2)$ implies that $G \cong {\rm{PSL}}(2,\Bbb C)$ and that $Γ_2$ belongs to one of finitely many commensurability classes. These results are proved using the theory of profinite groups; we do not exhibit explicit finite quotients that distinguish among the groups in question. But in the special case of two non-isomorphic triangle groups, we give an explicit description of finite quotients that distinguish between them.

Nilpotent completions of groups, Grothendieck pairs, and four problems of Baumslag

Two groups are said to have the same nilpotent genus if they have the same nilpotent quotients. We answer four questions of Baumslag concerning nilpotent completions. (i) There exists a pair of finitely generated, residually torsion-free-nilpotent groups of the same nilpotent genus such that one is finitely presented and the other is not. (ii) There exists a pair of finitely presented, residually torsion-free-nilpotent groups of the same nilpotent genus such that one has a solvable conjugacy problem and the other does not. (iii) There exists a pair of finitely generated, residually torsion-free-nilpotent groups of the same nilpotent genus such that one has finitely generated second homology $H_2(-,\Z)$ and the other does not. (iv) A non-trivial normal subgroup of infinite index in a finitely generated parafree group cannot be finitely generated. In proving this last result, we establish that the first $L^2$ betti number of a finitely generated parafree group of rank $r$ is $r-1$. It follows that the reduced $C^*$-algebra of the group is simple if $r\ge 2$, and that a version of the Freiheitssatz holds for parafree groups.

Gonality and genus of canonical components of character varieties

Let M be a two cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold and let M(r) be the result of r Dehn filling of a fixed cusp of M. We study canonical components of the SL(2,C) character varieties of M(r). We show that the gonality of these sets is bounded, independent of the filling parameter. We also obtain bounds, depending on r, for the genus of these sets. We compute the gonality for the double twist knots, demonstrating canonical components with arbitrarily large gonality.

All finite groups are involved in the Mapping Class Group

Let $Γ_g$ denote the orientation-preserving Mapping Class Group of the genus $g\geq 1$ closed orientable surface. In this paper we show that for fixed $g$, every finite group occurs as a quotient of a finite index subgroup of $Γ_g$.

Collisions at infinity in hyperbolic manifolds

For a complete, finite volume real hyperbolic n-manifold M, we investigate the map between homology of the cusps of M and the homology of $M$. Our main result provides a proof of a result required in a recent paper of Frigerio, Lafont, and Sisto.

Simon's conjecture for 2-bridge knots

It is conjectured that for each knot $K$ in $S^3$, the fundamental group of its complement surjects onto only finitely many distinct knot groups. Applying character variety theory we obtain an affirmative solution of the conjecture for a class of small knots that includes 2-bridge knots.

The genus spectrum of a hyperbolic 3-manifold

In this article we study the spectrum of totally geodesic surfaces of a finite volume hyperbolic 3-manifold. We show that for arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifolds that contain a totally geodesic surface, this spectrum determines the commensurability class. In addition, we show that any finite volume hyperbolic 3-manifold has many pairs of non-isometric finite covers with identical spectra. Forgetting multiplicities, we can also construct pairs where the volume ratio is unbounded.

Covering spaces of arithmetic 3-orbifolds

Let G be an arithmetic Kleinian group, and let O be the associated hyperbolic 3-orbifold or 3-manifold. In this paper, we prove that, in many cases, G is large, which means that some finite index subgroup admits a surjective homomorphism onto a non-abelian free group. This has many consequences, including that O has infinite virtual first Betti number and G has super-exponential subgroup growth. Our first result, which forms the basis for the entire paper, is that G is commensurable with a lattice containing the Klein group of order 4. Our second result is that if G has a finite index subgroup with first Betti number at least 4, then G is large. This is known to hold for many arithmetic lattices. In particular, we show that it is always the case when G contains A_4, S_4 or A_5. Our third main result is that the Lubotzky-Sarnak conjecture and the geometrisation conjecture together imply that any arithmetic Kleinian group G is large. We also give a new 'elementary' proof that arithmetic Kleinian groups do not have the congruence subgroup property, which avoids the use of the Golod-Shafarevich inequality.

Length and eigenvalue equivalence

Two Riemannian manifolds are called eigenvalue equivalent when their sets of eigenvalues of the Laplace-Beltrami operator are equal (ignoring multiplicities). They are (primitive) length equivalent when the sets of lengths of their (primitive) closed geodesics are equal. We give a general construction of eigenvalue equivalent and primitive length equivalent Riemannian manifolds. For example we show that every finite volume hyperbolic $n$--manifold has pairs of eigenvalue equivalent finite covers of arbitrarily large volume ratio. We also show the analogous result for primitive length equivalence.

Commensurability classes of 2-bridge knot complements

We show that a hyperbolic 2-bridge knot complement is the unique knot complement in its commensurability class. We also discuss constructions of commensurable hyperbolic knot complements and put forth a conjecture on the number of hyperbolic knot complements in a commensurability class.

A combination theorem for Veech subgroups of the mapping class group

In this paper we prove a combination theorem for Veech subgroups of the mapping class group analogous to the first Klein-Maskit combination theorem for Kleinian groups in which two Fuchsian subgroups are amalgamated along a parabolic subgroup. As a corollary, we construct subgroups of the mapping class group (for all genus at least 2), which are isomorphic to non-abelian closed surface groups in which all but one conjugacy class (up to powers) is pseudo-Anosov.

The co-rank conjecture for 3-manifold groups

In this paper we construct explicit examples of both closed and non-compact finite volume hyperbolic manifolds which provide counterexamples to the conjecture that the co-rank of a 3-manifold group (also known as the cut number) is bounded below by one-third the first Betti number.
