Altermagnetic Shastry-Sutherland fullerene networks

The interplay between quantum magnetism and many-body physics is of fundamental importance in condensed matter physics. %Magnetic exchange interactions in frustrated lattices give rise to rich phase diagrams. Molecular building blocks provide a versatile platform for exploring the exotic quantum phases arising from complex orderings in frustrated lattices. Here we demonstrate a showcase system based on altermagnetic Shastry-Sutherland fullerene networks, which can be constructed from a C$_{40}$ molecular synthon with two effective spin-1/2 sites due to the resonance structures. The charge-neutral, pure-carbon systems exhibit an altermagnetic ground state with fully compensated spins arranged in alternating C$_{40}$ units in a 2D rutile-like lattice, leading to $d$-wave splitting of the spin-polarised electronic band structure and strong chiral-split magnons. We report a rich phase diagram including altermagentic, quantum spin liquid, plaquette, and dimer phases, which can be accessed via moderate strains. Our findings open a new avenue for exploring quantum many-body physics based on scalable, chemically-feasible, molecular quantum materials.

Experimentally tunable QED in dipolar-octupolar quantum spin ice

We propose a readily achievable experimental setting where an external magnetic field is used to tune the emergent quantum electrodynamics (eQED) of dipolar-octupolar quantum spin ice (DO-QSI). In $U(1)_\pi$ DO-QSI -- the proposed ground state of QSI candidates Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$, Ce$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$ and Ce$_2$Hf$_2$O$_7$ -- we show that the field can be used to control the emergent speed of light (and, consequently, the emergent fine structure constant). Depending on the field's alignment with the crystal, one may induce different speeds for the two polarizations of the emergent photons, in a fascinating analogue of the electro-optic Kerr effect. In $U(1)_0$ DO-QSI -- yet to be uncovered experimentally -- we find a number of unusual field-induced transitions, including a transition between $0$- and $\pi$-flux QSI phases, as well as phases with frustrated flux configurations. We discuss experimental signatures of these effects in the spinon excitation spectrum, which can be readily accessed for instance in inelastic neutron scattering measurements. Our proposal opens the gate to a plethora of experimentally accessible, engineerable eQED phenomena in the emergent universes of quantum spin ice.

Vison crystal in quantum spin ice on the breathing pyrochlore lattice

Recent excitement in the quantum spin ice community has come from the experimental discovery of pseudospin-$1/2$ breathing pyrochlores, including Ba$_3$Yb$_2$Zn$_5$O$_{11}$, in which inversion symmetry is broken by the `up' and `down' tetrahedra taking different physical sizes. We show here that the often-neglected $J_{z\pm}$ coupling between Kramers ions, in combination with the breathing nature of the lattice, can produce an imaginary ring flip term. This can lead to an unconventional '$U(1)_{\pi/2}$ phase', corresponding to a maximally dense packing of visons on the lattice. Coherent dynamics persists in all phases, together with its emergent QED description, in a manner reminiscent of fragmentation in spinon crystals. We characterize the enlarged QSI phase diagram and its excitations, showing that the imaginary ring flip acts both as a chemical potential for visons and as an effective three-photon vertex akin to strong light-matter coupling. The novel coupling causes a structured high-energy continuum to emerge above the photon dispersion, which is naturally interpreted as three photon up-conversion in a nonlinear optical crystal.
