Challenges in Synchronous & Remote Collaboration Around Visualization

We characterize 16 challenges faced by those investigating and developing remote and synchronous collaborative experiences around visualization. Our work reflects the perspectives and prior research efforts of an international group of 29 experts from across human-computer interaction and visualization sub-communities. The challenges are anchored around five collaborative activities that exhibit a centrality of visualization and multimodal communication. These activities include exploratory data analysis, creative ideation, visualization-rich presentations, joint decision making grounded in data, and real-time data monitoring. The challenges also reflect the changing dynamics of these activities in the face of recent advances in extended reality (XR) and artificial intelligence (AI). As an organizing scheme for future research at the intersection of visualization and computer-supported cooperative work, we align the challenges with a sequence of four sets of research and development activities: technological choices, social factors, AI assistance, and evaluation.

The State of the Art in Visualization Literacy

Research in visualization literacy explores the skills required to engage with visualizations. This state-of-the-art report surveys the current literature in visualization literacy to provide a comprehensive overview of the field. We propose a taxonomy of visualization literacy that organizes the field into competency themes and research categories. To address ambiguity surrounding the term ``visualization literacy'', we provide a framework for operationalizing visualization literacy based on application contexts (including domain, scenario, and audience) and relevant competencies, which are categorized under consumption, construction, critique, and connection. Research contributions are organized into five categories: ontology, assessment, mechanisms, populiteracy, and intervention. For each category, we identify key trends, discuss which competencies are addressed, highlight open challenges, and examine how advancements within these areas inform and reinforce each other, driving progress in the field.

Mastery Learning Improves Performance on Complex Tasks on PCP Literacy Test

Developing literacy with unfamiliar data visualization techniques such as Parallel Coordinate Plots (PCPs) can be a significant challenge for students. We adopted the Revised Bloom's taxonomy to instruct students on Parallel Coordinate Plots (PCPs) using Mastery Learning in the classroom. To evaluate Mastery Learning's impact, we conducted an intervention in a Data Visualization course to teach students about PCPs using the Revised Bloom's taxonomy with and without Mastery Learning. Based on our intervention, we found that while students in both groups performed similarly on the first two (Remember, Understand) modules, the students in the Mastery Learning group performed better on modules that required more advanced thinking (Analyze, Evaluate) and demonstrated a better comprehension of PCPs.
