Line, Spiral, Dense in Space

Dobbs proved that the second iterate of almost every line in the complex plane under the exponential function is dense in the plane. In this paper, we prove an analogous result for the second iterate of the Zorich map in $\mathbb{R}^3$.

On cubic Blaschke products

We show that every cubic Blaschke product has a unique hyperbolic inflection point in the unit disk and, moreover, this point lies at the hyperbolic midpoint of the two critical points. Using this structure result for cubic Blaschke products, we give an explicit expression in terms of the parameters which determines when cubic Blaschke products are elliptic, parabolic, or hyperbolic.

Interpolating quasiregular power mappings

We construct a quasiregular mapping in $\mathbb{R}^3$ that is the first to illustrate several important dynamical properties: the quasi-Fatou set contains wandering components; these quasi-Fatou components are bounded and hollow; and the Julia set has components that are genuine round spheres. The key tool in this construction is a new quasiregular interpolation in round rings in $\mathbb{R}^3$ between power mappings of differing degrees on the boundary components. We also exhibit the flexibility of constructions based on these interpolations by showing that we may obtain quasiregular mappings which grow as quickly, or as slowly, as desired.

Genus $g$ Cantor sets and germane Julia sets

The primary aim of this paper is to give topological obstructions to Cantor sets in $\mathbb{R}^3$ being Julia sets of uniformly quasiregular mappings. Our main tool is the genus of a Cantor set. We give a new construction of a genus $g$ Cantor set, the first for which the local genus is $g$ at every point, and then show that this Cantor set can be realized as the Julia set of a uniformly quasiregular mapping. These are the first such Cantor Julia sets constructed for $g\geq 3$. We then turn to our dynamical applications and show that every Cantor Julia set of a hyperbolic uniformly quasiregular map has a finite genus $g$; that a given local genus in a Cantor Julia set must occur on a dense subset of the Julia set; and that there do exist Cantor Julia sets where the local genus is non-constant.

Variance of the distance to the boundary of convex domains in $\mathbb{R}^{2}$ and $\mathbb{R}^{3}$

In this paper, we give for the first time a systematic study of the variance of the distance to the boundary for arbitrary bounded convex domains in $\mathbb{R}^2$ and $\mathbb{R}^3$. In dimension two, we show that this function is strictly convex, which leads to a new notion of the centre of such a domain, called the variocentre. In dimension three, we investigate the relationship between the variance and the distance to the boundary, which mathematically justifies claims made for a recently developed algorithm for classifying interior and exterior points with applications in biology.

Phragmén-Lindelöf Principles and Julia Limiting Directions of Quasiregular Mappings

We show that the set of Julia limiting directions of a transcendental-type $K$-quasiregular mapping $f:\mathbb{R}^n\to \mathbb{R}^n$ must contain a component of a certain size, depending on the dimension $n$, the maximal dilatation $K$, and the order of growth of $f$. In particular, we show that if the order of growth is small enough, then every direction is a Julia limiting direction. We also show that if every component of the set of Julia limiting directions is a point, then $f$ has infinite order. The main tool in proving these results is a new version of a Phragmén-Lindelöf principle for sub-$F$-extremals in sectors, where we allow for boundary growth of the form $O( \log |x| )$ instead of the previously considered $O(1)$ bound.

A Unified Approach to Quasiregular Linearization in the Plane

We generalize the classical König's and Böttcher's Theorems in complex dynamics to certain quasiregular mappings in the plane. Our approach to these results is unified in the sense that it does not depend on the local injectivity, or not, of the map at the fixed point. By passing to the logarithmic transform we obtain a quasiconformal mapping in either case. Certain restrictions on the quasiregular mappings are needed in order for there to be a candidate to linearize to. These are provided by requiring a simple infinitesimal space of the mapping at the fixed point and restricting to the BIP mappings introduced by the authors in prior work.

Genus 2 Cantor sets

We construct a geometrically self-similar Cantor set $X$ of genus $2$ in $\mathbb{R}^3$. This construction is the first for which the local genus is shown to be $2$ at every point of $X$. As an application, we construct, also for the first time, a uniformly quasiregular mapping $f:\mathbb{R}^3 \to \mathbb{R}^3$ for which the Julia set $J(f)$ is a genus $2$ Cantor set.

Decomposing Multitwists

The Decomposition Problem in the class $LIP(\mathbb{S}^2)$ is to decompose any bi-Lipschitz map $f:\mathbb{S}^2 \to \mathbb{S}^2$ as a composition of finitely many maps of arbitrarily small isometric distortion. In this paper, we construct a decomposition for certain bi-Lipschitz maps which spiral around every point of a Cantor set $X$ of Assouad dimension strictly smaller than one. These maps are constructed by considering a collection of Dehn twists on the Riemann surface $\mathbb{S}^2 \setminus X$. The decomposition is then obtained via a bi-Lipschitz path which simultaneously unwinds these Dehn twists. As part of our construction, we also show that $X \subset \mathbb{S}^2$ is uniformly disconnected if and only if the Riemann surface $\mathbb{S}^2 \setminus X$ has a pants decomposition whose cuffs have hyperbolic length uniformly bounded above, which may be of independent interest.

Normal families and quasiregular mappings

Beardon and Minda gave a characterization of normal families of holomorphic and meromorphic functions in terms of a locally uniform Lipschitz condition. Here, we generalize this viewpoint to families of mappings in higher dimensions that are locally uniformly continuous with respect to a given modulus of continuity. Our main application is to the normality of families of quasiregular mappings through a locally uniform Hölder condition. This provides a unified framework in which to consider families of quasiregular mappings, both recovering known results of Miniowitz, Vuorinen and others, and yielding new results. In particular, normal quasimeromorphic mappings, Yosida quasiregular mappings and Bloch quasiregular mappings can be viewed as classes of quasiregular mappings which arise through consideration of various metric spaces for the domain and range. We give several characterizations of these classes and obtain upper bounds on the rate of growth in each class.

On uniformly disconnected Julia sets

It is well-known that the Julia set of a hyperbolic rational map is quasisymmetrically equivalent to the standard Cantor set. Using the uniformization theorem of David and Semmes, this result comes down to the fact that such a Julia set is both uniformly perfect and uniformly disconnected. We study the analogous question for Julia sets of UQR maps in $\mathbb{S}^n$, for $n\geq 2$. Introducing hyperbolic UQR maps, we show that the Julia set of such a map is uniformly disconnected if it is totally disconnected. Moreover, we show that if $E$ is a compact, uniformly perfect and uniformly disconnected set in $\mathbb{S}^n$, then it is the Julia set of a hyperbolic UQR map $f:\mathbb{S}^N \to \mathbb{S}^N$ where $N=n$ if $n=2$ and $N=n+1$ otherwise.

The maximum modulus set of a quasiregular map

We study, for the first time, the maximum modulus set of a quasiregular map. It is easy to see that these sets are necessarily closed, and contain at least one point of each modulus. Blumenthal showed that for entire maps these sets are either the whole plane, or a countable union of analytic curves. We show that in the quasiregular case, by way of contrast, any closed set containing at least one point of each modulus can be attained as the maximum modulus set of a quasiregular map. These examples are all of polynomial type. We also show that, subject to an additional constraint, such sets can even be attained by quasiregular maps of transcendental type.

Chaotic dynamics of a quasiregular sine mapping

This article studies the iterative behaviour of a quasiregular mapping S:\R^d\to\R^d that is an analogue of a sine function. We prove that the periodic points of S form a dense subset of \R^d. We also show that the Julia set of this map is \R^d in the sense that the forward orbit under S of any non-empty open set is the whole space \R^d. The map S was constructed by Bergweiler and Eremenko who proved that the escaping set I(S) is also dense in \R^d.

Iteration of quasiregular tangent functions in three dimensions

We define a new quasiregular mapping T in three dimensions that generalizes the tangent function on the complex plane and shares a number of its geometric properties. We investigate the dynamics of the family λT for λ>0, establishing results analogous to those of Devaney and Keen for the meromorphic family λtan z, λ>0, although the methods used are necessarily original.
