The dispersion generalized Benjamin-Ono equation

We consider the well-posedness of the family of dispersion generalized Benjamin-Ono equations. Earlier work of Herr-Ionescu-Kenig-Koch established well-posedness with data in $L^2$, by using a discretized gauge transform in the setting of Bourgain spaces. In this article, we remain in the simpler functional setting of Sobolev spaces, and instead combine a pseudodifferential gauge transform, a paradifferential normal form, and a variable coefficient Strichartz analysis to establish well-posedness in negative-exponent Sobolev spaces. Our result coincides with the classical well-posedness results obtained at the Benjamin-Ono and KdV endpoints.

Low regularity well-posedness for the generalized surface quasi-geostrophic front equation

We consider the well-posedness of the generalized surface quasi-geostrophic (gSQG) front equation. By using the null structure of the equation via a paradifferential normal form analysis, we obtain balanced energy estimates, which allow us to prove the local well-posedness of the non-periodic gSQG front equation at a low level of regularity (in the SQG case, at only one-half derivatives above scaling). In addition, we establish global well-posedness for small and localized rough initial data, as well as modified scattering, by using the testing by wave packet approach of Ifrim-Tataru.

Low regularity solutions for the surface quasi-geostrophic front equation

In this article we consider the low regularity well-posedness of the surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) front equation. Recent work on other quasilinear models, including the gravity water waves system and nonlinear waves, have demonstrated that in presence of a null structure, a normal form analysis can substantially improve the low regularity theory. In the current article, we observe a null structure in the context of SQG fronts, and establish improved local and global well-posedness results.

Improved low regularity theory for gravity-capillary waves

This article concerns the Cauchy problem for the gravity-capillary water waves system in general dimensions. We establish local well-posedness for initial data in $H^s$, with $s > \frac{d}{2} + 2 - \mu$, with $\mu = \frac{3}{14}$ and $\mu = \frac37$ in the cases $d = 1$ and $d \geq 2$ respectively. This represents an improvement over the the state-of-the-art low regularity theory in $d \geq 2$ dimensions.

Well-posedness for the surface quasi-geostrophic front equation

We consider the well-posedness of the surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) front equation. Hunter-Shu-Zhang [9] established well-posedness under a small data condition as well as a convergence condition on an expansion of the equation's nonlinearity. In the present article, we establish unconditional large data local well-posedness of the SQG front equation, while also improving the low regularity threshold for the initial data. In addition, we establish global well-posedness theory in the rough data regime by using the testing by wave packet approach of Ifrim-Tataru.

Two dimensional gravity waves at low regularity I: Energy estimates

This article represents the first installment of a series of papers concerned with low regularity solutions for the water wave equations in two space dimensions. Our focus here is on sharp cubic energy estimates. Precisely, we introduce and develop the techniques to prove a new class of energy estimates, which we call \emph{balanced cubic estimates}. This yields a key improvement over the earlier cubic estimates of Hunter-Ifrim-Tataru [15], while preserving their scale invariant character and their position-velocity potential holomorphic coordinate formulation. Even without using any Strichartz estimates, these results allow us to significantly lower the Sobolev regularity threshold for local well-posedness, drastically improving earlier results obtained by Alazard-Burq-Zuily [5, 6], Hunter-Ifrim-Tataru [15] and Ai [2].

The time-like minimal surface equation in Minkowski space: low regularity solutions

It has long been conjectured that for nonlinear wave equations which satisfy a nonlinear form of the null condition, the low regularity well-posedness theory can be significantly improved compared to the sharp results of Smith-Tataru for the generic case. The aim of this article is to prove the first result in this direction, namely for the time-like minimal surface equation in the Minkowski space-time. Further, our improvement is substantial, namely by $3/8$ derivatives in two space dimensions and by $1/4$ derivatives in higher dimensions.

Two dimensional gravity waves at low regularity II: Global solutions

This article represents the second installment of a series of papers concerned with low regularity solutions for the water wave equations in two space dimensions. Our focus here is on global solutions for small and localized data. Such solutions have been proved to exist earlier in [15, 7, 10, 12] in much higher regularity. Our goal in this paper is to improve these results and prove global well-posedness under minimal regularity and decay assumptions for the initial data. One key ingredient here is represented by the balanced cubic estimates in our first paper. Another is the nonlinear vector field Sobolev inequalities, an idea first introduced by the last two authors in the context of the Benjamin-Ono equations [14].

Well-posedness for the dispersive Hunter-Saxton equation

This article represents a first step towards understanding the well-posedness for the dispersive Hunter-Saxton equation. This problem arises in the study of nematic liquid crystals, and although the equation has formal similarities with the KdV equation, the lack of $L^2$ control gives it a quasilinear character, with only continuous dependence on initial data. Here, we prove the local and global well-posedness of the Cauchy problem using a normal form approach to construct modified energies, and frequency envelopes in order to prove the continuous dependence with respect to the initial data.

Low regularity solutions for gravity water waves II: The 2D case

The gravity water waves equations describe the evolution of the surface of an incompressible, irrotational fluid in the presence of gravity. The classical regularity threshold for the well-posedness of this system requires initial velocity field in $H^s$, with $s > \frac{1}{2} + 1$, and can be obtained by proving standard energy estimates. This threshold was improved by additionally proving Strichartz estimates with loss. In this article, we establish the well-posedness result for $s > \frac{1}{2} + 1 - \frac{1}{8}$, corresponding to proving lossless Strichartz estimates. This provides the sharp regularity threshold with respect to the approach of combining Strichartz estimates with energy estimates.

Low regularity solutions for gravity water waves

We prove local well-posedness for the gravity water waves equations without surface tension, with initial velocity field in $H^s$, $s > \frac{d}{2} + 1 - μ$, where $μ= \frac{1}{10}$ in the case $d = 1$ and $μ= \frac{1}{5}$ in the case $d \geq 2$, extending previous results of Alazard-Burq-Zuily. The improvement primarily arises in two areas. First, we perform an improved analysis of the regularity of the change of variables from Eulerian to Lagrangian coordinates. Second, we perform a time-interval length optimization of the localized Strichartz estimates.

One-bit compressed sensing with non-Gaussian measurements

In one-bit compressed sensing, previous results state that sparse signals may be robustly recovered when the measurements are taken using Gaussian random vectors. In contrast to standard compressed sensing, these results are not extendable to natural non-Gaussian distributions without further assumptions, as can be demonstrated by simple counter-examples. We show that approximately sparse signals that are not extremely sparse can be accurately reconstructed from single-bit measurements sampled according to a sub-gaussian distribution, and the reconstruction comes as the solution to a convex program.

Sylvester-Gallai type theorems for approximate collinearity

We study questions in incidence geometry where the precise position of points is `blurry' (e.g. due to noise, inaccuracy or error). Thus lines are replaced by narrow tubes, and more generally affine subspaces are replaced by their small neighborhood. We show that the presence of a sufficiently large number of approximately collinear triples in a set of points in d dimensional complex space implies that the points are close to a low dimensional affine subspace. This can be viewed as a stable variant of the Sylvester-Gallai theorem and its extensions. Building on the recently found connection between Sylvester-Gallai type theorems and complex Locally Correctable Codes (LCCs), we define the new notion of stable LCCs, in which the (local) correction procedure can also handle small perturbations in the euclidean metric. We prove that such stable codes with constant query complexity do not exist. No impossibility results were known in any such local setting for more than 2 queries.
