Quantum electrodynamic corrections to the $1s3d$ states of the helium atom

We perform quantum electrodynamic calculations of the ionization energy of the $1s3d$ states of the $^4$He atom, including a complete evaluation of the $mα^6$ correction. We find a large contribution from the nonradiative part of this correction, which has not been accounted for in previous investigations. The additional contribution shifts theoretical predictions for ionization energies by about 10$\,σ$. Despite this shift, we confirm the previously reported systematic deviations between measured experimental results and theoretical predictions for transitions involving $3D$ states. The reason for these deviations remains unknown.

Nuclear structure effects in light muonic atoms

Nuclear structure corrections to energy levels of light muonic atoms are derived with particular attention to the nuclear mass dependence. The obtained result for the 2P-2S transition of 1.717(19) meV serves for determination of the nuclear charge radius from the spectroscopic measurement in muonic deuterium.

Electromagnetic moments of the bound system of charged particles

We consider a bound system of particles interacting via electromagnetic forces in an external electromagnetic field, including leading relativistic corrections. Each particle has a definite mass, charge, spin, and charge radius. We introduce suitable canonical transformations and a perturbation scheme to obtain a Hamiltonian which describes the global dynamics of the system. This enables the derivation of formulas for various electromagnetic moments, such as the magnetic dipole moment, the mean square charge radius, and the electric dipole polarizability.

Pair creation by time-dependent electric fields: Analytic solutions

Exact analytical solutions are presented for the time evolution of the density of pairs produced in the QED vacuum by a uniform electric field that is adiabatically switched on starting at minus infinity. Pair production is described by the Dirac-Heisenberg-Wigner function introduced before [Phys. Rev. D 44, 1825 (1991)]. The explicit solution is obtained by an extension of the method of the spinorial decomposition to deal with a time-varying electric field. The main result of this work is that the pair density is an analytic function of the field strength; it can be expanded into a convergent power series. Therefore, the essential singularity present in the Schwinger formula is to be attributed to the infinitely long duration of the process of pair creation by a time-independent field.
