Compensation of Beer-Lambert attenuation using non-diffracting Bessel beams

We report on a versatile method to compensate the linear attenuation in a medium, independently of its microscopic origin. The method exploits diffraction-limited Bessel beams and tailored on-axis intensity profiles which are generated using a phase-only spatial light modulator. This technique for compensating one of the most fundamental limiting processes in linear optics is shown to be efficient for a wide range of experimental conditions (modifying the refractive index and the attenuation coefficient). Finally, we explain how this method can be advantageously exploited in applications ranging from bio-imaging light sheet microscopy to quantum memories for future quantum communication networks.

Optical nanofiber interferometer and resonator

We report the fabrication and characterization of photonic structures using tapered optical nanofibers. Thanks to the extension of the evanescent electromagnetic field outside of the nanofiber two types of devices can be built: a ring interferometer and a knot resonator. We propose a general approach to predict the properties of these structures using the linear coupling theory. In addition, we describe a new source of birefringence due to the ovalization of a nanofiber under strong bending, known in mechanical engineering as the Brazier effect.

Full control of polarization in tapered optical nanofibers

We report on a protocol to achieve full control of the polarization in a nanofiber. The protocol relies on studying the light scattered out from a nanofiber by means of two optical systems with $45^\circ$ camera angle difference. By studying the disturbance of the nanofiber on the radiation of embedded scatterers, we propose an explanation for the observed reduced scattering contrast of the nanofiber. Thanks to this approach, we demonstrate an accuracy of the polarization control larger than 95\%.

Generating strong anti-bunching by interfering with coherent states

The second order correlation function is traditionally used to characterize the photon statistics and to distinguish between classical and quantum states of light. In this article we study a simple setup offering the possibility to generate strong anti-bunched light. This is achieved by mixing on a beam splitter a coherent state with a state with a non-negative Wigner function, such as squeezed states or weak Schrödinger cat states. We elucidate the interference mechanism generating such strong antibunching and relate it to unconventionnal photon blockade. We also detail how this effect can be used to measure weak squeezing.

Photonic crystal nanobeam cavities with optical resonances around 800 nm

We report on the design and the fabrication of 1D photonic crystal (PhC) nanobeam cavities with optical resonances around 800 nm, compatible with Rubidium, Cesium or Argon atomic transitions. The cavities are made of Indium Gallium Phosphide (InGaP) material, a III-V semi-conductor compound which has a large index of refraction ($n \simeq 3.3$) favoring strong optical confinement and small mode volumes. Nanobeam cavities with inline and side coupling have been designed and fabricated, and quality factors up to $2\times 10^4$ have been measured.

CdSe/CdS dot-in-rods nanocrystals fast blinking dynamics

The blinking dynamics of colloidal core-shell CdSe/CdS dot-in-rods is studied in detail at the single particle level. Analyzing the autocorrelation function of the fluorescence intensity, we demonstrate that these nanoemitters are characterized by a short value of the mean duration of bright periods (ten to a few hundreds of microseconds). The comparison of the results obtained for samples with different geometries shows that not only the shell thickness is crucial but also the shape of the dot- in-rods. Increasing the shell aspect ratio results in shorter bright periods suggesting that surface traps impact the stability of the fluorescence intensity.

Coherent merging of counter-propagating exciton-polariton superfluids

We report the formation of a macroscopic coherent state emerging from colliding polariton fluids. Four lasers with random relative phases, arranged in a square, pump resonantly a planar microcavity, creating four coherent polariton fluids propagating toward each other. When the density (interactions) increases, the four fluids synchronise and the topological excitations (vortex or soliton) disappear to form a single superfluid.

Multiphoton nonclassical light from clusters of single-photon emitters

We study nonclassical features of multiphoton light emitted by clusters of single-photon emitters. As signatures of nonclassicality, we use violation of inequalities for normalized correlation functions of different orders or the probabilities of multiphoton detection. In experiment, for clusters of 2 to 14 colloidal CdSe/CdS dot-in-rods we observe nonclassical behavior, which gets even more pronounced for larger clusters.

Polarisation control of linear dipole radiation using spin-momentum locking of light

We experimentally demonstrate that a linear dipole is not restricted to emit linearly polarised light, provided it is embedded in the appropriate nanophotonic environment. We observe emission of various elliptical polarisations by a linear dipole including circularly polarised light, without the need for birefringent components. We further show that the emitted state of polarisation can theoretically span the entire Poincare sphere. The experimental demonstration is based on elongated gold nanoparticles (nanorods) deposited on an optical nanofibre and excited by a free-space laser beam. The light directly collected in the guided mode of the nanofibre is analysed in regard to the azimuthal position and orientation of the nanorods, observed by means of scanning electron microscopy. This work constitutes a demonstration of the mapping between purely geometrical degrees of freedom of a light source and all polarisation states and could open the way to new methods for polarisation control of light sources at the nanoscale.

Sustained propagation and control of topological excitations in polariton superfluid

We present a simple method to compensate for losses in a polariton superfluid. Based on a weak support field, it allows for an extended propagation of a resonantly driven polariton superfluid at a minimal energetic cost. Moreover, this setup based on optical bistability, leads to a significant release of the phase constraint imposed by the resonant driving. This release, together with the macroscopic polariton propagation, offers a unique opportunity to study the hydrodynamics of topological excitations of polariton superfluids such as quantized vortices and dark solitons. We numerically study how the coherent field supporting the superfluid flow interacts with the vortices and how it can be used to control them. Interestingly, we show that standard hydrodynamics does not apply for this driven-dissipative fluid and new behaviours are identified.

Twist of generalized skyrmions and spin vortices in a polariton superfluid

We study the spin vortices and skyrmions coherently imprinted into an exciton-polariton condensate on a planar semiconductor microcavity. We demonstrate that the presence of a polarization anisotropy can induce a complex dynamics of these structured topologies, leading to the twist of their circuitation on the Poincaré sphere of polarizations. The theoretical description of the results carries the concept of generalized quantum vortices in two-component superfluids, which are conformal with polarization loops around an arbitrary axis in the pseudospin space.

Optical trapping of nanoparticles by full solid-angle focusing

Optical dipole-traps are used in various scientific fields, including classical optics, quantum optics and biophysics. Here, we propose and implement a dipole-trap for nanoparticles that is based on focusing from the full solid angle with a deep parabolic mirror. The key aspect is the generation of a linear-dipole mode which is predicted to provide a tight trapping potential. We demonstrate the trapping of rod-shaped nanoparticles and validate the trapping frequencies to be on the order of the expected ones. The described realization of an optical trap is applicable for various other kinds of solid-state targets. The obtained results demonstrate the feasibility of optical dipole-traps which simultaneously provide high trap stiffness and allow for efficient interaction of light and matter in free space.

Injection of orbital angular momentum and storage of quantized vortices in polariton superfluids

We report the experimental investigation and theoretical modeling of a rotating polariton superfluid relying on an innovative method for the injection of angular momentum. This novel, multi-pump injection method uses four coherent lasers arranged in a square, resonantly creating four polariton populations propagating inwards. The control available over the direction of propagation of the superflows allows injecting a controllable non-quantized amount of optical angular momentum. When the density at the center is low enough to neglect polariton-polariton interactions, optical singularities, associated to an interference pattern, are visible in the phase. In the superfluid regime resulting from the strong nonlinear polariton-polariton interaction, the interference pattern disappears and only vortices with the same sign are persisting in the system. Remarkably the number of vortices inside the superfluid region can be controlled by controlling the angular momentum injected by the pumps.

Interaction-Shaped Vortex-Antivortex Lattices in Polariton Fluids

Topological defects such as quantized vortices are one of the most striking manifestations of the superfluid nature of Bose-Einstein condensates and typical examples of quantum mechanical phenomena on a macroscopic scale. Here we demonstrate the formation of a lattice of vortex-antivortex pairs and study, for the first time, its properties in the non-linear regime at high polarion-density where polariton-polariton interactions dominate the behaviour of the system. In this work first we demonstrate that the array of vortex-antivortex pairs can be generated in a controllable way in terms of size of the array and in terms of size and shape of it fundamental unit cell. Then we demonstrate that polariton-polariton repulsion can strongly deform the lattice unit cell and determine the pattern distribution of the vortex-antivortex pairs, reaching a completely new behaviour with respect to geometrically generated vortex lattices whose shape is determined only by the geometry of the system.

Ultra-Fast Stark-Induced Control of Polaritonic States

A laser pulse, several meV red-detuned from the excitonic line of a quantum well, has been shown to induce an almost instantaneous and rigid shift of the lower and upper polariton branches. Here we demonstrate that through this shift, ultra-fast all-optical control of the polariton population in a semiconductor microcavity should be achievable. In the proposed setup a Stark field is used to bring the lower polariton branch in or out of resonance with a quasi-resonant continuous-wave laser, thereby favoring or inhibiting the injection of polaritons into the cavity. Moreover we show that this technique allows for the implementation of optical switches with extremely high repetition rates.

Polarimetry-based analysis of dipolar transitions of single colloidal CdSe/CdS dot-in-rods

We prove experimentally, upon polarization analysis performed on a large statistic of single nanoemitters, that high quality core/shell CdSe/CdS dot-in-rods behave as linear dipoles. Moreover, the dipole in-plane and out-of-plane orientations could be assessed. We demonstrate in particular that, contrary to expectations, the emitting dipole is not aligned with the elongated axis of the dot-in-rod. Besides, the polarimetric measurements prove that the excitation transition cannot be approximated by a single linear dipole, contrary to the emission transition. Finally, we highlight that non-radiative channels of charge carrier recombination do not affect the dipolar nature of the radiative transitions.

All-optical polariton transistor

While optical technology provides the best solution for the transmission of information, optical logics still calls for qualitative new concepts to be explored. Exciton-polaritons are composite particles, resulting from the strong coupling between excitons and photons, which have recently demonstrated exceptional properties like huge non-linearities, long range coherence and suppression of scattering. Here we demonstrate a switching scheme for polaritons moving in the plane of a microcavity which satisfy all the requirements for an all-optical transistor. Under resonant excitation, the power threshold for the nonlinear increase of the polariton density is varied by a weak control beam, obtaining up to 19 times amplification with switching energies in the range of attojoule per square micron. Polariton propagation in the plane of the microcavity is then used to control the switching of a second, spatially separated transistor, opening the way to the implementation of polariton integrated circuits.

Atomic-ensemble-based quantum memory for sideband modulations

Interaction of a control and a signal field with an ensemble of three-level atoms allows direct mapping of the quantum state of the signal field into long lived coherences of an atomic ground state. For a vapor of cesium atoms, using Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT) and Zeeman coherences, we compare the case where a tunable single-sideband is stored independently of the other one to the case where the two symmetrical sidebands are stored using the same transparency window. We study the conditions in which simultaneous storage of two non-commuting variables carried by light and subsequent read-out is possible. We show that excess noise associated with spontaneous emission and spin relaxation is small, and we evaluate the quantum performance of our memory by measuring the signal transfer coefficient T and the conditional variance V and using the T-V criterion as a state independent benchmark.
