Latin American HECAP Physics Briefing Book 2025

The first process for the Latin American Strategy Forum for Research Infrastructure for High Energy, Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics (LASF4RI-HECAP) came to a conclusion in October 2020, with a Physics Briefing Book (PBB) presented in (2104.06852). Here we present an updated PBB, the result of the first update of LASF4RI-HECAP. The update process began with a call for White Papers from the HECAP community. The submitted contributions were presented at the III LASF4RI for HECAP Symposium: Update of the Strategic Plan, held at ICTP-SAIFR in S\~ao Paulo in August 26-29, 2024, with the participation of the Preparatory Group, High Level Strategy Group, Funding Agencies and representatives of similar efforts from around the globe. This updated PBB was written by the Preparatory Group based mainly on 46 White Papers submitted by the community and is organized around seven working groups: Astronomy, Astrophysics and Astroparticle Physics; Cosmology; Dark Matter; Neutrinos; Electroweak and Strong Interactions, Higgs Physics, CP and Flavour Physics and BSM; Instrumentation and Computing; Advanced Training and Capacity Building. It is intended to provide the essential input for the creation of a long-term HECAP strategy in the region.

An Andean Deep-Valley Detector for High-Energy Tau Neutrinos

High-energy astrophysical neutrinos, recently discovered by IceCube up to energies of several PeV, opened a new window to the high-energy Universe. Yet much remains to be known. IceCube has excellent muon flavor identification, but tau flavor identification is challenging. This limits its ability to probe neutrino physics and astrophysics. To address this limitation, we present a concept for a large-scale observatory of astrophysical tau neutrinos in the 1-100 PeV range, where a flux is guaranteed to exist. Its detection would allow us to characterize the neutrino sources observed by IceCube, to discover new ones, and test neutrino physics at high energies. The deep-valley air-shower array concept that we present provides highly background-suppressed neutrino detection with pointing resolution <1 degree, allowing us to begin the era of high-energy tau-neutrino astronomy.

Using a portable muon detector for radioactive source measurements and identification

We have re-purposed portable plastic scintillator muon detectors, designed by the CosmicWatch project, for the measurement of electrons emitted by the decay of radioactive sources. For the latter purpose we have first calibrated the detectors using the local atmospheric muon flux, performing angular distribution and attenuation measurements. In addition, we have simulated the detector using Geant4 in a detailed fashion for a cross-check and better understanding of the device. Then, we have developed a method to evaluate the activity of $\beta$-sources and to discriminate different $\beta$-sources by looking into their respective voltage spectrum output.

Testing quantum decoherence at DUNE

We address some theoretical issues of the quantum decoherence phenomenon within the neutrino oscillation framework and carry out various tests under DUNE simulated experimental environment. On the theoretical side, we provide a general expression for an invariant decoherence matrix under a quantum basis rotation. On the simulated experimental side, considering a rotation invariant and a non-invariant decoherence matrix, we study the impact on the fitting of the standard oscillation parameters, the sensitivity in the mass hierarchy and CP violation, combining the neutrino and antineutrino mode and all available neutrino oscillation probabilities channels. Furthermore, a sensitivity for the decoherence parameter of order $10^{-24}\text{GeV}$ at 3$\sigma$, is obtained for our best case.
