Reweighting NNPDFs: the W lepton asymmetry

We present a method for incorporating the information contained in new datasets into an existing set of parton distribution functions without the need for refitting. The method involves reweighting the ensemble of parton densities through the computation of the chi-square to the new dataset. We explain how reweighting may be used to assess the impact of any new data or pseudodata on parton densities and thus on their predictions. We show that the method works by considering the addition of inclusive jet data to a DIS+DY fit, and comparing to the refitted distribution. We then use reweighting to determine the impact of recent high statistics lepton asymmetry data from the D0 experiment on the NNPDF2.0 parton set. We find that the D0 inclusive muon and electron data are perfectly compatible with the rest of the data included in the NNPDF2.0 analysis and impose additional constraints on the large-x d/u ratio. The more exclusive D0 electron datasets are however inconsistent both with the other datasets and among themselves, suggesting that here the experimental uncertainties have been underestimated.

On the Impact of NMC Data on NLO and NNLO Parton Distributions and Higgs Production at the Tevatron and the LHC

We discuss the impact of the treatment of NMC structure function data on parton distributions in the context of the NNPDF2.1 global PDF determination at NLO and NNLO. We show that the way these data are treated, and even their complete removal, has no effect on parton distributions at NLO, and at NNLO has an effect which is below one sigma. In particular, the Higgs production cross-section in the gluon fusion channel is very stable.

Precision determination of alpha_s using an unbiased global NLO parton set

We determine the strong coupling alpha_s from a next-to-leading order analysis of processes used for the NNPDF2.1 parton determination, which includes data from neutral and charged current deep-inelastic scattering, Drell-Yan and inclusive jet production. We find alpha_s(M_Z)=0.1191+-0.0006 (exp), where the uncertainty includes all statistical and systematic experimental uncertainties, but not purely theoretical uncertainties. We study the dependence of the results on the dataset, by providing further determinations based respectively on deep-inelastic data only, and on HERA data only. The deep-inelastic fit gives the consistent result alpha_s(M_Z)=0.1177+-0.0009(exp), but the result of the HERA-only fit is only marginally consistent. We provide evidence that individual data subsets can have runaway directions due to poorly determined PDFs, thus suggesting that a global dataset is necessary for a reliable determination.

NLO QCD corrections to the production of two bottom-antibottom pairs at the LHC

We report the results of a computation of the full next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the production of two $b\bar{b}$ pairs at the LHC. This calculation at the parton level provides predictions for well separated $b$-jets. The results show that the next-to-leading order corrections lead to an enhancement of the cross-section for the central scale choice by roughly 50% with respect to the leading order result. The theoretical uncertainty estimated by variation of the renormalization and factorization scales is strongly reduced by the inclusion of next-to-leading order corrections.

The PDF4LHC Working Group Interim Report

This document is intended as a study of benchmark cross sections at the LHC (at 7 TeV) at NLO using modern parton distribution functions currently available from the 6 PDF fitting groups that have participated in this exercise. It also contains a succinct user guide to the computation of PDFs, uncertainties and correlations using available PDF sets. A companion note, also submitted to the archive, provides an interim summary of the current recommendations of the PDF4LHC working group for the use of parton distribution functions and of PDF uncertainties at the LHC, for cross section and cross section uncertainty calculations.

Modern Feynman Diagrammatic One-Loop Calculations

In this talk we present techniques for calculating one-loop amplitudes for multi-leg processes using Feynman diagrammatic methods in a semi-algebraic context. Our approach combines the advantages of the different methods allowing for a fast evaluation of the amplitude while monitoring the numerical stability of the calculation. In phase space regions close to singular kinematics we use a method avoiding spurious Gram determinants in the calculation. As an application of our approach we report on the status of the calculation of the amplitude for the process $pp\to b\bar{b}b\bar{b}+X$.

Top production at the LHC: the impact of PDF uncertainties and correlations

In this contribution we discuss the impact of PDF uncertainties on t\bar{t} and t-channel single-top production at the LHC. We present predictions for total cross-sections computed at NLO accuracy with different PDF sets. For single- top production, we point out that the uncertainty arising from the choice of the bottom quark mass is one of the dominant theoretical uncertainties on the total cross-section. Finally, the possibility of using PDF induced correlations between top quark and electroweak vector boson production cross-sections to improve the accuracy of LHC measurements is investigated.

Recent Progress in the Golem Project

We report on the current status of the Golem project which aims at the construction of a general one-loop evaluator for matrix elements. We construct the one-loop matrix elements from Feynman diagrams in a highly automated way and provide a library for the reduction and numerically stable evaluation of the tensor integrals involved in this approach. Furthermore, we present applications to physics processes relevant for the LHC.

NLO QCD corrections to 4 b-quark production

In this talk we present the recent calculation of the NLO QCD corrections to the production of four b-quarks induced by initial state quarks at the CERN LHC. We describe the details of the calculation using the GOLEM approach for the virtual corrections and MadEvent/MadDipole for the real emission part and present some results.

Fitting Parton Distribution Data with Multiplicative Normalization Uncertainties

We consider the generic problem of performing a global fit to many independent data sets each with a different overall multiplicative normalization uncertainty. We show that the methods in common use to treat multiplicative uncertainties lead to systematic biases. We develop a method which is unbiased, based on a self--consistent iterative procedure. We demonstrate the use of this method by applying it to the determination of parton distribution functions with the NNPDF methodology, which uses a Monte Carlo method for uncertainty estimation.

A first unbiased global NLO determination of parton distributions and their uncertainties

We present a determination of the parton distributions of the nucleon from a global set of hard scattering data using the NNPDF methodology: NNPDF2.0. Experimental data include deep-inelastic scattering with the combined HERA-I dataset, fixed target Drell-Yan production, collider weak boson production and inclusive jet production. Next-to-leading order QCD is used throughout without resorting to K-factors. We present and utilize an improved fast algorithm for the solution of evolution equations and the computation of general hadronic processes. We introduce improved techniques for the training of the neural networks which are used as parton parametrization, and we use a novel approach for the proper treatment of normalization uncertainties. We assess quantitatively the impact of individual datasets on PDFs. We find very good consistency of all datasets with each other and with NLO QCD, with no evidence of tension between datasets. Some PDF combinations relevant for LHC observables turn out to be determined rather more accurately than in any other parton fit.

Combined PDF and strong coupling uncertainties at the LHC with NNPDF2.0

We present predictions for relevant LHC observables obtained with the NNPDF2.0 set. We compute the combined PDFs uncertainties on these observables, and show that combining errors in quadrature yields an excellent approximation to exact error propagation. We then compare the NNPDF2.0 results to the other global PDF fits using a common value of $α_s$. At LHC 7 TeV, reasonable agreement, both in central values and in uncertainties, is found for NNPDF2.0, CTEQ6.6 and MSTW08.

NLO Cross Sections for the LHC using GOLEM: Status and Prospects

In this talk we review the GOLEM approach to one-loop calculations and present an automated implementation of this technique. This method is based on Feynman diagrams and an advanced reduction of one-loop tensor integrals which avoids numerical instabilities. We have extended our one-loop integral library golem95 with an automated one-loop matrix element generator to compute the virtual corrections of the process $q\bar{q}\to b\bar{b}b\bar{b}$. The implementation of the virtual matrix element has been interfaced with tree-level Monte Carlo programs to provide the full result for the above process.

Precision determination of electroweak parameters and the strange content of the proton from neutrino deep-inelastic scattering

We use recent neutrino dimuon production data combined with a global deep-inelastic parton fit to construct a new parton set, NNPDF1.2, which includes a determination of the strange and antistrange distributions of the nucleon. The result is characterized by a faithful estimation of uncertainties thanks to the use of the NNPDF methodology, and is free of model or theoretical assumptions other than the use of NLO perturbative QCD and exact sum rules. Better control of the uncertainties of the strange and antistrange parton distributions allows us to reassess the determination of electroweak parameters from the NuTeV dimuon data. We perform a direct determination of the |V_cd| and |V_cs| CKM matrix elements, obtaining central values in agreement with the current global CKM fit: specifically we find |V_cd|=0.244\pm 0.019 and |V_cs|=0.96\pm 0.07. Our result for |V_cs| is more precise than any previous direct determination. We also reassess the uncertainty on the NuTeV determination of \sin^2θ_W through the Paschos-Wolfenstein relation: we find that the very large uncertainties in the strange valence momentum fraction are sufficient to bring the NuTeV result into complete agreement with the results from precision electroweak data.

The NNPDF1.2 parton set: implications for the LHC

Recently a new set of Parton Distribution Functions (NNPDF1.2) has been produced and released by the NNPDF Collaboration. The inclusion of dimuon data in the analysis allows a determination of the strange content of the proton with faithful uncertainty estimation together with a precision determination of electroweak parameters. In this contribution, we discuss some of the implications of the NNPDF1.2 set, and in particular of its uncertainty determination of the strange PDFs, for LHC phenomenology. First of all, we study the impact on the electroweak boson production cross-section, with special attention to the Z/W ratio. Then we revisit the top pair production cross-section, and perform a comparison of partonic fluxes between various PDF sets. Finally, we discuss the potential of using associated production of W with a charm quark at the Tevatron and the LHC to constrain the proton strangeness.

The Bjorken sum rule with Monte Carlo and Neural Network techniques

Determinations of structure functions and parton distribution functions have been recently obtained using Monte Carlo methods and neural networks as universal, unbiased interpolants for the unknown functional dependence. In this work the same methods are applied to obtain a parametrization of polarized Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) structure functions. The Monte Carlo approach provides a bias--free determination of the probability measure in the space of structure functions, while retaining all the information on experimental errors and correlations. In particular the error on the data is propagated into an error on the structure functions that has a clear statistical meaning. We present the application of this method to the parametrization from polarized DIS data of the photon asymmetries $A_1^p$ and $A_1^d$ from which we determine the structure functions $g_1^p(x,Q^2)$ and $g_1^d(x,Q^2)$, and discuss the possibility to extract physical parameters from these parametrizations. This work can be used as a starting point for the determination of polarized parton distributions.

A determination of parton distributions with faithful uncertainty estimation

We present the determination of a set of parton distributions of the nucleon, at next-to-leading order, from a global set of deep-inelastic scattering data: NNPDF1.0. The determination is based on a Monte Carlo approach, with neural networks used as unbiased interpolants. This method, previously discussed by us and applied to a determination of the nonsinglet quark distribution, is designed to provide a faithful and statistically sound representation of the uncertainty on parton distributions. We discuss our dataset, its statistical features, and its Monte Carlo representation. We summarize the technique used to solve the evolution equations and its benchmarking, and the method used to compute physical observables. We discuss the parametrization and fitting of neural networks, and the algorithm used to determine the optimal fit. We finally present our set of parton distributions. We discuss its statistical properties, test for its stability upon various modifications of the fitting procedure, and compare it to other recent parton sets. We use it to compute the benchmark W and Z cross sections at the LHC. We discuss issues of delivery and interfacing to commonly used packages such as LHAPDF.

Update on Neural Network Parton Distributions: NNPDF1.1

We present recent progress within the NNPDF parton analysis framework. After a brief review of the results from the DIS NNPDF analysis, NNPDF1.0, we discuss results from an updated analysis with independent parametrizations for the strange and anti-strange distributions, denoted by NNPDF1.1. We examine the phenomenological implications of this improved analysis for the strange PDFs.
