Efficiency fluctuations in cyclic machines

We study the statistics of the efficiency in a class of isothermal cyclic machines with realistic coupling between the internal degrees of freedom. We derive, under fairly general assumptions, the probability distribution function for the efficiency. We find that the macroscopic efficiency is always equal to the most likely efficiency, and it lies in an interval whose boundaries are universal as they only depend on the input and output thermodynamic forces, and not on the details of the machine. The machine achieves the upper boundary of such an interval only in the limit of tight coupling. Furthermore, we find that the tight coupling limit is a necessary, yet not sufficient, condition for the engine to perform close to the reversible efficiency. The reversible efficiency is the least likely regardless of the coupling strength, in agreement with previous studies. By using a large deviation formalism we derive a fluctuation relation for the efficiency which holds for any number of internal degrees of freedom in the system.

Autonomous quantum rotator

We consider a minimal model of a quantum rotator composed of a single particle confined in an harmonic potential and driven by two temperature-biased heat reservoirs. In the case the particle potential is rendered asymmetric and rotated an angle, a finite angular momentum develops, corresponding to a directed rotary motion. At variance with the classical case, the thermal fluctuations in the baths give rise to a non-vanishing average torque contribution; this is a genuine quantum effect akin to the Casimir effect. In the steady state the heat current flowing between the two baths is systematically converted into particle rotation. We derive exact expressions for the work rate and heat currents in the case where the system is driven by an external time periodic mechanical force. We show, in agreement with previous works on classical systems, that for this choice of external manipulation protocol, the rotator cannot work either as a heat pump or as a heat engine. We finally use our exact results to extend an ab-initio quantum simulation algorithm to the out-of-equilibrium regime.

A minimal model of an autonomous thermal motor

We consider a model of a Brownian motor composed of two coupled overdamped degrees of freedom moving in periodic potentials and driven by two heat reservoirs. This model exhibits a spontaneous breaking of symmetry and gives rise to directed transport in the case of a non- vanishing interparticle interaction strength. For strong coupling between the particles we derive an expression for the propagation velocity valid for arbitrary periodic potentials. In the limit of strong coupling the model is equivalent to the Büttiker-Landauer model [1-3] for a single particle diffusing in an environment with position dependent temperature. By using numerical calculations of the Fokker-Planck equation and simulations of the Langevin equations we study the model for arbitrary coupling, retrieving many features of the strong coupling limit. In particular, directed transport emerges even for symmetric potentials. For distinct heat reservoirs the heat currents are well-defined quantities allowing a study of the motor efficiency. We show that the optimal working regime occurs for moderate coupling. Finally, we introduce a model with discrete phase space which captures the essential features of the continuous model, can be solved in the limit of weak coupling, and exhibits a larger efficiency than the continuous counterpart.

Exact firing time statistics of neurons driven by discrete inhibitory noise

Neurons in the intact brain receive a continuous and irregular synaptic bombardment from excitatory and inhibitory pre-synaptic neurons, which determines the firing activity of the stimulated neuron. In order to investigate the influence of inhibitory stimulation on the firing time statistics, we consider Leaky Integrate-and-Fire neurons subject to inhibitory instantaneous post-synaptic potentials. In particular, we report exact results for the firing rate, the coefficient of variation and the spike train spectrum for various synaptic weight distributions. Our results are not limited to stimulations of infinitesimal amplitude, but they apply as well to finite amplitude post-synaptic potentials, thus being able to capture the effect of rare and large spikes. The developed methods are able to reproduce also the average firing properties of heterogeneous neuronal populations.

Theoretical description of effective heat transfer between two viscously coupled beads

We analytically study the role of nonconservative forces, namely viscous couplings, on the statistical properties of the energy flux between two Brownian particles kept at different temperatures. From the dynamical model describing the system, we identify an energy flow that satisfies a fluctuation theorem both in the stationary and in transient states. In particular, for the specific case of a linear nonconservative interaction, we derive an exact fluctuation theorem that holds for any measurement time in the transient regime, and which involves the energy flux alone. Moreover, in this regime the system presents an interesting asymmetry between the hot and cold particles. The theoretical predictions are in good agreement with the experimental results already presented in our previous article [B{é}rut et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 068301 (2016)], where we investigated the thermodynamic properties of two Brownian particles, trapped with optical tweezers, interacting through a dissipative hydrodynamic coupling.

Stochastic thermodynamics in many-particle systems

We study the thermodynamic properties of a microscopic model of coupled oscillators that exhibits a dynamical phase transition from a desynchronized to a synchronized phase. We consider two different configurations for the thermodynamic forces applied on the oscillators, one resembling the macroscopic power grids, and one resembling autonomous molecular motors. We characterize the input and the output power as well as the efficiency at maximum power, providing analytic expressions for such quantities near the critical coupling strength. We discuss the role of the quenched disorder in the thermodynamic force distributions and show that such a disorder may lead to an enhancement of the efficiency at maximum power.

Heat transport in harmonic oscillator systems with correlated baths: Application to optomechanical arrays

We investigate the transport of phonons between $N$ harmonic oscillators in contact with independent thermal baths and coupled to a common oscillator, and derive an expression for the steady state heat flow between the oscillators in the weak coupling limit. We apply these results to an optomechanical array consisting of a pair of mechanical resonators coupled to a single quantised electromagnetic field mode by radiation pressure as well as to thermal baths with different temperatures. In the weak coupling limit this system is shown to be equivalent to two mutually-coupled harmonic oscillators in contact with an effective common thermal bath in addition to their independent baths. The steady state occupation numbers and heat flows are derived and discussed in various regimes of interest.

Heat flow in chains driven by thermal noise

We consider the large deviation function for a classical harmonic chain composed of N particles driven at the end points by heat reservoirs, first derived in the quantum regime by Saito and Dhar and in the classical regime by Saito and Dhar and Kundu et al. Within a Langevin description we perform this calculation on the basis of a standard path integral calculation in Fourier space. The cumulant generating function yielding the large deviation function is given in terms of a transmission Green's function and is consistent with the fluctuation theorem. We find a simple expression for the tails of the heat distribution which turn out to decay exponentially. We, moreover, consider an extension of a single particle model suggested by Derrida and Brunet and discuss the two-particle case. We also discuss the limit for large N and present a closed expression for the cumulant generating function. Finally, we present a derivation of the fluctuation theorem on the basis of a Fokker-Planck description. This result is not restricted to the harmonic case but is valid for a general interaction potential between the particles.

Heat fluctuations and fluctuation theorems in the case of multiple reservoirs

We consider heat fluctuations and fluctuation theorems for systems driven by multiple reservoirs. We establish a fundamental symmetry obeyed by the joint probability distribution for the heat transfers and system coordinates. The symmetry leads to a generalisation of the asymptotic fluctuation theorem for large deviations at large times. As a result the presence of multiple reservoirs influence the tails in the heat distribution. The symmetry, moreover, allows for a simple derivation of a recent exact fluctuation theorem valid at all times. Including a time dependent work protocol we also present a derivation of the integral fluctuation theorem.

Exact fluctuation theorem without ensemble quantities

Evaluating the entropy production (EP) along a stochastic trajectory requires the knowledge of the system probability distribution, an ensemble quantity notoriously difficult to measure. In this paper, we show that the EP of nonautonomous systems in contact with multiple reservoirs can be expressed solely in terms of physical quantities measurable at the single trajectory level with a suitable preparation of the initial condition. As a result, we identify universal energy and particle fluctuation relations valid for any measurement time. We apply our findings to an electronic junction model which may be used to verify our prediction experimentally.

Sisyphus Effect in Pulse Coupled Excitatory Neural Networks with Spike-Timing Dependent Plasticity

The collective dynamics of excitatory pulse coupled neural networks with spike timing dependent plasticity (STDP) is studied. Depending on the model parameters stationary states characterized by High or Low Synchronization can be observed. In particular, at the transition between these two regimes, persistent irregular low frequency oscillations between strongly and weakly synchronized states are observable, which can be identified as infraslow oscillations with frequencies 0.02 - 0.03 Hz. Their emergence can be explained in terms of the Sisyphus Effect, a mechanism caused by a continuous feedback between the evolution of the coherent population activity and of the average synaptic weight. Due to this effect, the synaptic weights have oscillating equilibrium values, which prevents the neuronal population from relaxing into a stationary macroscopic state.

Efficiency at maximum power of motor traffic on networks

We study motor traffic on Bethe networks subject to hard-core exclusion for both tightly coupled one-state machines and loosely coupled two-state machines that perform work against a constant load. In both cases we find an interaction-induced enhancement of the efficiency at maximum power (EMP) as compared to non-interacting motors. The EMP enhancement occurs for a wide range of network and single motor parameters and is due to a change in the characteristic load-velocity relation caused by phase transitions in the system. Using a quantitative measure of the trade-off between the EMP enhancement and the corresponding loss in the maximum output power we identify parameter regimes where motor traffic systems operate efficiently at maximum power without a significant decrease in the maximum power output due to jamming effects.

Statistical properties of the energy exchanged between two heat baths coupled by thermal fluctuations

We study both experimentally and theoretically the statistical properties of the energy exchanged between two electrical conductors, kept at different temperature by two different heat reservoirs, and coupled by the electric thermal noise. Such a system is ruled by the same equations as two Brownian particles kept at different temperatures and coupled by an elastic force. We measure the heat flowing between the two reservoirs, the thermodynamic work done by one part of the system on the other, and we show that these quantities exhibit a long time fluctuation theorem. Furthermore, we evaluate the fluctuating entropy, which satisfies a conservation law. These experimental results are fully justified by the theoretically analysis. Our results give more insight into the energy transfer in the famous Feymann ratchet widely studied theoretically but never in an experiment.

Maximum power operation of interacting molecular motors

We study the mechanical and thermodynamic properties of different traffic models for kinesin which are relevant in biological and experimental contexts. We find that motor-motor interactions play a fundamental role by enhancing the thermodynamic efficiency at maximum power of the motors, as compared to the non-interacting system, in a wide range of biologically compatible scenarios. We furthermore consider the case where the motor-motor interaction directly affects the internal chemical cycle and investigate the effect on the system dynamics and thermodynamics.

Entropy-generated power and its efficiency

We propose a simple model for a motor that generates mechanical motion by exploiting an entropic force arising from the topology of the underlying phase space. We show that the generation of mechanical forces in our system is surprisingly robust to local changes in kinetic and topological parameters. Furthermore, we find that the efficiency at maximum power may show discontinuities.

Emergence of slow collective oscillations in neural networks with spike timing dependent plasticity

The collective dynamics of excitatory pulse coupled neurons with spike timing dependent plasticity (STDP) is studied. The introduction of STDP induces persistent irregular oscillations between strongly and weakly synchronized states, reminiscent of brain activity during slow-wave sleep. We explain the oscillations by a mechanism, the Sisyphus Effect, caused by a continuous feedback between the synaptic adjustments and the coherence in the neural firing. Due to this effect, the synaptic weights have oscillating equilibrium values, and this prevents the system from relaxing into a stationary macroscopic state.

On the heat flux and entropy produced by thermal fluctuations

We report an experimental and theoretical analysis of the energy exchanged between two conductors kept at different temperature and coupled by the electric thermal noise. Experimentally we determine, as functions of the temperature difference, the heat flux, the out-of- equilibrium variance and a conservation law for the fluctuating entropy, which we justify theoretically. The system is ruled by the same equations of two Brownian particles kept at different temperatures and coupled by an elastic force. Our results set strong constrains on the energy exchanged between coupled nano-systems kept at different temperature.}

Bound particle coupled to two thermostats

We consider a harmonically bound Brownian particle coupled to two distinct heat reservoirs at different temperatures. We show that the presence of a harmonic trap does not change the large deviation function from the case of a free Brownian particle discussed by Derrida and Brunet and Visco. Likewise, the Gallavotti-Cohen fluctuation theorem related to the entropy production at the heat sources remains in force. We support the analytical results with numerical simulations.
