Observability of wave and plate equations with rough coefficients and interfaces: a multiplier approach

The goal of this article is to derive observability properties for wave and plate equations with rough coefficients in the principal part, including the case of interfaces, through a regularization process. Specifically, we demonstrate that if a singular coefficient can be approximated by a sequence of smooth coefficients corresponding to uniformly observable systems, then the observability inequalities can be passed to the limit. This allows us to derive observability properties for the limit system. While this strategy is natural, we show that it can be used to establish new observability results in several settings, particularly in the presence of interfaces meeting the boundary, or multiple interfaces intersecting at a point, under a suitable multiplier-type condition that imposes sign constraints on the jumps of the coefficients at the interfaces. A key advantage of this approach is that it avoids the need for a detailed analysis of the regularity of solutions near the sets where the coefficients are singular.

Simultaneous reconstruction of two potentials for a nonconservative Schr\"odinger equation with dynamic boundary conditions

In this article, we consider an inverse problem involving the simultaneous reconstruction of two real valued potentials for a Schr\"odinger equation with mixed boundary conditions: a dynamic boundary condition of Wentzell type and a Dirichler boundary condition. The main result of this paper is a Lipschitz stability estimate for such potentials from a single measurement of the flux. This result is deduced using the Bukhgeim-Klibanov method and a suitable Carleman estimate where the weight function depends on Minkowski's functional.

Local null controllability of a cubic Ginzburg-Landau equation with dynamic boundary conditions

This paper deals with controllability properties of a cubic Ginzburg-Landau equation with dynamic boundary conditions. More precisely, we prove a local null controllability result by using a single control supported in a small subset of the domain. In order to achieve this result, we firstly linearize the system around the origin and we analyze it by the duality approach and an appropriate Carleman estimate. Then, by using an inverse function theorem, the local null controllability of the nonlinear system is proven.

Exact Controllability for a Schr\"odinger equation with dynamic boundary conditions

In this paper, we study the controllability of a Schr\"odinger equation with mixed boundary conditions on disjoint subsets of the boundary: dynamic boundary condition of Wentzell type, and Dirichlet boundary condition. The main result of this article is given by new Carleman estimates for the associated adjoint system, where the weight function is constructed specially adapted to the geometry of the domain. Using these estimates, we prove the exact controllability of the system with a boundary control acting only in the part of the boundary where the Dirichlet condition is imposed. Also, we obtain a distributed exact controllability result for the system.

An inverse problem for Moore-Gibson-Thompson equation arising in high intensity ultrasound

In this article we study the inverse problem of recovering a space-dependent coefficient of the Moore-Gibson-Thompson (MGT) equation, from knowledge of the trace of the solution on some open subset of the boundary. We obtain the Lipschitz stability for this inverse problem, and we design a convergent algorithm for the reconstruction of the unknown coefficient. The techniques used are based on Carleman inequalities for wave equations and properties of the MGT equation.

Lipschitz stability in an inverse problem for the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation

This paper presents an inverse problem for the nonlinear 1-d Kuramoto-Sivashinsky (K-S) equation. More precisely, we study the nonlinear inverse problem of retrieving the anti-diffusion coefficient from the measurements of the solution on a part of the boundary and at some positive time everywhere. Uniqueness and Lipschitz stability for this inverse problem are proven with the Bukhgeim-Klibanov method. The proof is based on a global Carleman estimate for the linearized K-S equation.

An inverse problem for Schrödinger equations with discontinuous main coefficient

This paper concerns the inverse problem of retrieving a stationary potential for the Schrödinger evolution equation in a bounded domain of RN with Dirichlet data and discontinuous principal coefficient a(x) from a single time-dependent Neumann boundary measurement. We consider that the discontinuity of a is located on a simple closed hyper-surface called the interface, and a is constant in each one of the interior and exterior domains with respect to this interface. We prove uniqueness and lipschitz stability for this inverse problem under certain convexity hypothesis on the geometry of the interior domain and on the sign of the jump of a at the interface. The proof is based on a global Carleman inequality for the Schrödinger equation with discontinuous coefficients, result also interesting by itself.

A global Carleman estimate in a transmission wave equation and application to a one-measurement inverse problem

We consider a transmission wave equation in two embedded domains in $R^2$, where the speed is $a1 > 0$ in the inner domain and $a2 > 0$ in the outer domain. We prove a global Carleman inequality for this problem under the hypothesis that the inner domain is strictly convex and $a1 > a2$ . As a consequence of this inequality, uniqueness and Lip- schitz stability are obtained for the inverse problem of retrieving a stationary potential for the wave equation with Dirichlet data and discontinuous principal coefficient from a single time-dependent Neumann boundary measurement.
