Polysymplectic formulation for BF gravity with Immirzi parameter

The polysymplectic formulation of the CMPR action, which is a BF-type formulation of General Relativity that involves an arbitrary Immirzi parameter, is performed. We implement a particular scheme within this covariant Hamiltonian approach to analyze the constraints that characterize the CMPR model. By means of the privileged $(n-1)$-forms and the Poisson-Gerstenhaber bracket, inherent to the polysymplectic framework, the BF field equations associated to the CMPR action are obtained and, in consequence, the Einstein equations naturally emerge by solving the simplicity constraints of the theory. Further, from the polysymplectic analysis of the CMPR action the De Donder-Weyl Hamiltonian formulation of the Holst action is recovered, which is consistent with the Lagrangian analysis of this model as reported in the literature.

Polymeric quantum mechanics and the zeros of the Riemann zeta function

We analize the Berry-Keating model and the Sierra and Rodríguez-Laguna Hamiltonian within the polymeric quantization formalism. By using the polymer representation, we obtain for both models, the associated polymeric quantum Hamiltonians and the corresponding stationary wave functions. The self-adjointness condition provide a proper domain for the Hamiltonian operator and the energy spectrum, which turned out to be dependent on an introduced scale parameter. By performing a counting of semiclassical states, we prove that the polymer representation reproduces the smooth part of the Riemann-von Mangoldt formula, and introduces a correction depending on the energy and the scale parameter, which resembles the fluctuation behavior of the Riemann zeros.

De Donder-Weyl Hamiltonian formalism of MacDowell-Mansouri gravity

We analyse the behaviour of the MacDowell-Mansouri action with internal symmetry group $\mathrm{SO}(4,1)$ under the covariant Hamiltonian formulation. The field equations, known in this formalism as the De Donder-Weyl equations, are obtained by means of the graded Poisson-Gerstenhaber bracket structure present within the covariant formulation. The decomposition of the internal algebra $\mathfrak{so}(4,1)\simeq\mathfrak{so}(3,1)\oplus\mathbb{R}^{3,1}$ allows the symmetry breaking $\mathrm{SO}(4,1)\to\mathrm{SO}(3,1)$, which reduces the original action to the Palatini action without the topological term. We demonstrate that, in contrast to the Lagrangian approach, this symmetry breaking can be performed indistinctly in the covariant Hamiltonian formalism either before or after the variation of the De Donder-Weyl Hamiltonian has been done, recovering Einstein's equations via the Poisson-Gerstenhaber bracket.

Polymer Quantum Mechanics as a Deformation Quantization

We analyze the polymer representation of quantum mechanics within the deformation quantization formalism. In particular, we construct the Wigner function and the star-product for the polymer representation as a distributional limit of the Schrödinger representation for the Weyl algebra in a Gaussian weighted measure, and we observe that the quasi-probability distribution limit of this Schrödinger representation agrees with the Wigner function for Loop Quantum Cosmology. Further, the introduced polymer star-product fulfills Bohr's correspondence principle even though not all the operators are well defined in the polymer representation. Finally, within our framework, we also derive a generalized uncertainty principle which is consistent to the ones usually obtained in theories assuming a fundamental minimal length in their formulation.

Polysymplectic formulation for topologically massive Yang-Mills field theory

We analyze the De Donder-Weyl covariant field equations for the topologically massive Yang-Mills theory. These equations are obtained through the Poisson-Gerstenhaber bracket described within the polysymplectic framework. Even though the Lagrangian defining the system of our interest is singular, we show that by appropriately choosing the polymomenta one may obtain an equivalent regular Lagrangian, thus avoiding the standard analysis of constraints. Further, our simple treatment allows us to only consider the privileged $(n-1)$-forms in order to obtain the correct field equations, in opposition to certain examples found in the literature.

Unruh effect detection through chirality in curved graphene

We analyze a generalization of the analogue Unruh effect based on curved graphene. To this end, we consider the fourth order in derivatives field theoretic version of the Pais-Uhlenbeck oscillator, for which the Unruh effect may be interpreted as the creation of two different particles with different masses, corresponding to two Klein-Gordon subsystems. For our model, unlike the standard case, electron chirality on the graphene sheet plays a main role as chirality is essential to distinguish the couple of particles predicted by the Unruh effect associated to the Pais-Uhlenbeck field model.

The Unruh effect for higher derivative field theory

We analyse the emergence of the Unruh effect within the context of a field Lagrangian theory associated to the Pais-Uhlenbeck fourth order oscillator model. To this end, we introduce a transformation that brings the Hamiltonian bounded from below and is consistent with $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric quantum mechanics. We find that, as far as we consider different frequencies within the Pais-Uhlenbeck model, a particle together with an antiparticle of different masses are created as may be traced back to the Bogoliubov transformation associated to the interaction between the Unruh-DeWitt detector and the higher derivative scalar field. On the contrary, whenever we consider the equal frequencies limit, no particle creation is detected as the pair particle/antiparticle annihilate each other. Further, following Moschella and Schaeffer, we construct a Poincaré invariant two-point function for the Pais-Uhlenbeck model, which in turn allows us to perform the thermal analysis for any of the emanant particles.

Causal Poisson bracket via deformation quantization

Starting with the well-defined product of quantum fields at two spacetime points, we explore an associated Poisson structure for classical field theories within the deformation quantization formalism. We realize that the induced star-product is naturally related to the standard Moyal product through an appropriate causal Green's functions connecting points in the space of classical solutions to the equations of motion. Our results resemble the Peierls-DeWitt bracket analyzed in the multisymplectic context. Once our star-product is defined we are able to apply the Wigner-Weyl map in order to introduce a generalized version of Wick's theorem. Finally, we include some examples to explicitly test our method: the real scalar field, the bosonic string and a physically motivated nonlinear particle model. For the field theoretic models we have encountered causal generalizations of the creation/annihilation relations, and also a causal generalization of the Virasoro algebra for the bosonic string. For the nonlinear particle case, we use the approximate solution in terms of the Green's function in order to construct a well-behaved causal bracket.

Hamiltonian analysis for linearly acceleration-dependent Lagrangians

We study the constrained Ostrogradski-Hamilton framework for the equations of motion provided by mechanical systems described by second-order derivative actions with a linear dependence in the accelerations. We stress out the peculiar features provided by the surface terms arising for this type of theories and we discuss some important properties for this kind of actions in order to pave the way for the construction of a well defned quantum counterpart by means of canonical methods. In particular, we analyse in detail the constraint structure for these theories and its relation to the inherent conserved quantities where the associated energies together with a Noether charge may be identifed. The constraint structure is fully analyzed without the introduction of auxiliary variables, as proposed in recent works involving higher order Lagrangians. Finally, we also provide some examples where our approach is explicitly applied and emphasize the way in which our original arrangement results in propitious for the Hamiltonian formulation of covariant feld theories.

Virtual beams and the Klein paradox for the Klein-Gordon equation

Whenever we consider any relativistic quantum wave equation we are confronted with the Klein paradox, which asserts that incident particles will suffer a surplus of reflection when dispersed by a discontinuous potential. Following recent results on the Dirac equation, we propose a solution to this paradox for the Klein-Gordon case by introducing virtual beams in a natural well-posed generalization of the method of images in the theory of partial differential equations. Thus, our solution considers a global reflection coefficient obtained from the two contributions, the reflected particles plus the incident virtual particles. Despite its simplicity, this method allows a reasonable understanding of the paradox within the context of the quantum relativistic theory of particles (according to the original setup for the Klein paradox) and without resorting to any quantum field theoretic issues.

Deformation quantization of the Pais-Uhlenbeck fourth order oscillator

We analyze the quantization of the Pais-Uhlenbeck fourth order oscillator within the framework of deformation quantization. Our approach exploit the Noether symmetries of the system by proposing integrals of motion as the variables to obtain a solution to the -genvalue equation, namely the Wigner function. We also obtain, by means of a quantum canonical transformation the wave function associated to the Schrödinger equation of the system. We show that unitary evolution of the system is guaranteed by means of the quantum canonical transformation and via the properties of the constructed Wigner function, even in the so called equal frequency limit of the model, in agreement with recent results.

Quantum modified Regge-Teitelboim cosmology

The canonical quantization of the modified geodetic brane cosmology which is implemented from the Regge-Teitelboim model and the trace of the extrinsic curvature of the brane trajectory, K, is developed. As a second-order derivative model, on the grounds of the Ostrogradski Hamiltonian method and the Dirac's scheme for constrained systems, we find suitable first- and second-class constraints which allow for a proper quantization. We also find that the first-class constraints obey a sort of truncated Virasoro algebra. The effective quantum potential emerging in our approach is exhaustively studied where it shows that an embryonic epoch is still present. The quantum nucleation is sketched where we observe that it is driven by an effective cosmological constant.

Modified geodetic brane cosmology

We explore the cosmological implications provided by the geodetic brane gravity action corrected by an extrinsic curvature brane term, describing a codimension-1 brane embedded in a 5D fixed Minkowski spacetime. In the geodetic brane gravity action, we accommodate the correction term through a linear term in the extrinsic curvature swept out by the brane. We study the resulting geodetic-type equation of motion. Within a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker metric, we obtain a generalized Friedmann equation describing the associated cosmological evolution. We observe that, when the radiation-like energy contribution from the extra dimension is vanishing, this effective model leads to a self-(non-self)-accelerated expansion of the brane-like universe in dependence on the nature of the concomitant β-parameter associated with the correction, which resembles an analogous behaviour in the DGP brane cosmology. Several possibilities in the description for the cosmic evolution of this model are embodied and characterized by the involved density parameters related in turn to the cosmological constant, the geometry characterizing the model, the introduced β-parameter as well as the dark like-energy and the matter content on the brane.

Quantum charged rigid membrane

The early Dirac proposal to model the electron as a charged membrane is reviewed. A rigidity term, instead of the natural membrane tension, involving linearly the extrinsic curvature of the worldvolume swept out by the membrane is considered in the action modeling the bubble in the presence of an electromagnetic field. We set up this model as a genuine second-order derivative theory by considering a non-trivial boundary term which plays a relevant part in our formulation. The Lagrangian in question is linear in the bubble acceleration and by means of the Ostrogradski-Hamiltonian approach we observed that the theory comprises the management of both first- and second-class constraints. We show thus that our second-order approach is robust allowing for a proper quantization. We found an effective quantum potential which permits to compute bounded states for the system. We comment on the possibility of describing brane world universes by invoking this kind of second-order correction terms.

Ostrogradski approach for the Regge-Teitelboim type cosmology

We present an alternative geometric inspired derivation of the quantum cosmology arising from a brane universe in the context of {\it geodetic gravity}. We set up the Regge-Teitelboim model to describe our universe, and we recover its original dynamics by thinking of such field theory as a second-order derivative theory. We refer to an Ostrogradski Hamiltonian formalism to prepare the system to its quantization. Our analysis highlights the second-order derivative nature of the RT model and the inherited geometrical aspect of the theory. A canonical transformation brings us to the internal physical geometry of the theory and induces its quantization straightforwardly. By using the Dirac canonical quantization method our approach comprises the management of both first- and second-class constraints where the counting of degrees of freedom follows accordingly. At the quantum level our Wheeler-De Witt Wheeler equation agrees with previous results recently found. On these lines, we also comment upon the compatibility of our approach with the Hamiltonian approach proposed by Davidson and coworkers.

Geometrical dynamics of Born-Infeld objects

We present a geometrical inspired study of the dynamics of $Dp$-branes. We focus on the usual nonpolynomial Dirac-Born-Infeld action for the worldvolume swept out by the brane in its evolution in general background spacetimes. We emphasize the form of the resulting equations of motion which are quite simple and resemble Newton's second law, complemented with a conservation law for a worldvolume bicurrent. We take a closer look at the classical Hamiltonian analysis which is supported by the ADM framework of general relativity. The constraints and their algebra are identified as well as the geometrical role they play in phase space. In order to illustrate our results, we review the dynamics of a $D1$-brane immersed in a $AdS_3 \times S^3$ background spacetime. We exhibit the mechanical properties of Born-Infeld objects paving the way to a consistent quantum formulation.

Superselection sectors in the Ashtekar-Horowitz-Boulware model

We investigate refined algebraic quantisation of the constrained Hamiltonian system introduced by Boulware as a simplified version of the Ashtekar-Horowitz model. The dimension of the physical Hilbert space is finite and asymptotes in the semiclassical limit to 1/(2π\hbar) times the volume of the reduced phase space. The representation of the physical observable algebra is irreducible for generic potentials but decomposes into irreducible subrepresentations for certain special potentials. The superselection sectors are related to singularities in the reduced phase space and to the rate of divergence in the formal group averaging integral. There is no tunnelling into the classically forbidden region of the unreduced configuration space, but there can be tunnelling between disconnected components of the classically allowed region.

Refined algebraic quantisation with the triangular subgroup of SL(2,R)

We investigate refined algebraic quantisation with group averaging in a constrained Hamiltonian system whose gauge group is the connected component of the lower triangular subgroup of SL(2,R). The unreduced phase space is T^*R^{p+q} with p>0 and q>0, and the system has a distinguished classical o(p,q) observable algebra. Group averaging with the geometric average of the right and left invariant measures, invariant under the group inverse, yields a Hilbert space that carries a maximally degenerate principal unitary series representation of O(p,q). The representation is nontrivial iff (p,q) is not (1,1), which is also the condition for the classical reduced phase space to be a symplectic manifold up to a singular subset of measure zero. We present a detailed comparison to an algebraic quantisation that imposes the constraints in the sense H_a Psi = 0 and postulates self-adjointness of the o(p,q) observables. Under certain technical assumptions that parallel those of the group averaging theory, this algebraic quantisation gives no quantum theory when (p,q) = (1,2) or (2,1), or when p>1, q>1 and p+q is odd.
