Super-resolution Control of Two-dimensional Quantum Emitters

Localized interlayer excitons in semiconducting transition-metal dichalcogenide heterobilayers are quantum emitters with a static electric dipole moment, making them excellent nanoscale charge sensors to probe correlated quantum phases in a proximal layer. These emitters are electrically tunable and inherit spin-valley selection rules, yet their deterministic spatial control remains challenging due to subwavelength confinement. Here, we present a platform that combines cryogenic optical spectroscopy with scanning probe microscopy to investigate trapped interlayer excitons in WSe$_2$/MoSe$_2$ bilayers. By exploiting AFM-based local Stark shift, we achieve super-resolution localization of emitters separated by only a few tens of nanometers and demonstrate deterministic control of individual charge states, including trion formation, opening a path towards coherent inter-dot coupling. Time-resolved measurements reveal tip-induced modification of the electromagnetic vacuum around individual emitters, thus controlling their radiative emission. Our multi-point charge sensing platform with optical readout is particularly well-suited to study fractionalization and anyon dynamics in semiconducting FCIs.

Growth of Large Crystals of Janus Phase RhSeCl Using Self-Selecting Vapour Growth

In recent years, interest in 2D Janus materials has grown exponentially, particularly with regard to their applications in spintronics and optoelectronic devices. The defining feature of Janus materials is the ordered arrangement of different layer terminations - creating chemically distinct surfaces and an inherent out-of-plane polarity. Among the few known Janus materials, RhSeCl is particularly intriguing as a rare example of an intrinsic Janus compound. Owing to its exceptional chemical stability, RhSeCl offers a promising platform for exploring the physics related to the Janus-structure. However, synthesising large, high-quality crystals of this compound remains a significant challenge. Here, we report a novel synthetic pathway for growing crystals up to 6 mm in lateral size via a two-step self-selecting vapour growth reaction. We further present a comprehensive comparison of newly developed synthesis routes with all previously reported methods for RhSeCl. During these investigations, we identified a previously unreported impurity that forms in specific growth pathways and demonstrate how it can be avoided to obtain phase-pure few- and monolayer flakes. We showcase the reproducibility of the process to obtain high-quality, large single-crystals and flakes.

Observation of flat $Γ$ moiré bands in twisted bilayer WSe$_2$

The recent observation of correlated phases in transition metal dichalcogenide moiré systems at integer and fractional filling promises new insight into metal-insulator transitions and the unusual states of matter that can emerge near such transitions. Here, we combine real- and momentum-space mapping techniques to study moiré superlattice effects in 57.4$^{\circ}$ twisted WSe$_2$ (tWSe$_2$). Our data reveal a split-off flat band that derives from the monolayer $Γ$ states. Using advanced data analysis, we directly quantify the moiré potential from our data. We further demonstrate that the global valence band maximum in tWSe$_2$ is close in energy to this flat band but derives from the monolayer K-states which show weaker superlattice effects. These results constrain theoretical models and open the perspective that $Γ$-valley flat bands might be involved in the correlated physics of twisted WSe$_2$.

Nanospintronics with carbon nanotubes

One of the actual challenges of spintronics is the realization of a spin-transistor allowing to control spin transport through an electrostatic gate. In this review, we report on different experiments which demonstrate a gate control of spin transport in a carbon nanotube connected to ferromagnetic leads. We also discuss some theoretical approaches which can be used to analyze spin transport in these systems. We emphasize the roles of the gate-tunable quasi-bound states inside the nanotube and the coherent spin-dependent scattering at the interfaces between the nanotube and its ferromagnetic contacts.
