A thermodynamical fiber bundle model for the fracture of disordered materials

We investigate a disordered version of a thermodynamic fiber bundle model proposed by Selinger, Wang, Gelbart, and Ben-Shaul a few years ago. For simple forms of disorder, the model is analytically tractable and displays some new features. At either constant stress or constant strain, there is a non monotonic increase of the fraction of broken fibers as a function of temperature. Moreover, the same values of some macroscopic quantities as stress and strain may correspond to different microscopic cofigurations, which can be essential for determining the thermal activation time of the fracture. We argue that different microscopic states may be characterized by an experimentally accessible analog of the Edwards-Anderson parameter. At zero temperature, we recover the behavior of the irreversible fiber bundle model.

Phase ordering and symmetries of the Potts model

We have studied the ordering of the q-colours Potts model in two dimensions on a square lattice. On the basis of our observations we propose that if q is large enough the system is not able to break global and local null magnetisation symmetries at zero temperature: when q<4 the system forms domains with a size proportional to the system size while for q>4 it relaxes towards a non-equilibrium phase with energy larger than the ground state energy, in agreement with the previous findings of De Oliveira et al. (M. J. de Oliveira, A. Petri, T. Tome, Europhys. Lett., 65, 20 (2004)).

Brownian forces in sheared granular matter

We present results from a series of experiments on a granular medium sheared in a Couette geometry and show that their statistical properties can be computed in a quantitative way from the assumption that the resultant from the set of forces acting in the system performs a Brownian motion. The same assumption has been utilised, with success, to describe other phenomena, such as the Barkhausen effect in ferromagnets, and so the scheme suggests itself as a more general description of a wider class of driven instabilities.

Shear stress fluctuations in the granular liquid and solid phases

We report on experimentally observed shear stress fluctuations in both granular solid and fluid states, showing that they are non-Gaussian at low shear rates, reflecting the predominance of correlated structures (force chains) in the solidlike phase, which also exhibit finite rigidity to shear. Peaks in the rigidity and the stress distribution's skewness indicate that a change to the force-bearing mechanism occurs at the transition to fluid behaviour, which, it is shown, can be predicted from the behaviour of the stress at lower shear rates. In the fluid state stress is Gaussian distributed, suggesting that the central limit theorem holds. The fibre bundle model with random load sharing effectively reproduces the stress distribution at the yield point and also exhibits the exponential stress distribution anticipated from extant work on stress propagation in granular materials.

Boltzmann Temperature in out-of-equilibrium lattice gas

We investigate the quench of Ising and Potts models via Monte Carlo dynamics, and find that the distribution of the site-site interaction energy has the same form as in the equilibrium case. This form directly derives from the Boltzmann statistics and allows to measure the instantaneous temperature during the systems relaxation. We find that, after an undercritical quench, the system equilibrates in a finite time at the heatbath temperature, while the energy still decreases due to the coarsening process.

Crystal vs glass formation in lattice models with many coexisting ordered phases

We present here new evidence that after a quench the planar Potts model on the square lattice relaxes towards a glassy state if the number of states q is larger than four. By extrapolating the finite size data we compute the average energy of these states for the infinite system with periodic boundary conditions, and find that it is comparable with that previously found using fixed boundary conditions. We also report preliminary results on the behaviour of these states in the presence of thermal fluctuations

Lattice models of disorder with order

This paper describes the use of simple lattice models for studying the properties of structurally disordered systems like glasses and granulates. The models considered have crystalline states as ground states, finite connectivity, and are not subject to constrained evolution rules. After a short review of some of these models, the paper discusses how two particularly simple kinds of models, the Potts model and the exclusion models, evolve after a quench at low temperature to glassy states rather than to crystalline states.

Hausdorff moment problem via fractional moments

We outline an efficient method for the reconstruction of a probability density function from the knowledge of its infinite sequence of ordinary moments. The approximate density is obtained resorting to maximum entropy technique, under the constraint of some fractional moments. The latter ones are obtained explicitly in terms of the infinite sequence of given ordinary moments. It is proved that the approximate density converges in entropy to the underlying density, so that it demonstrates to be useful for calculating expected values.

Cumulants of the three state Potts model and of nonequilibrium models with C3v symmetry

The critical behavior of two-dimensional stochastic lattice gas models with C3v symmetry is analyzed. We study the cumulants of the order parameter for the three state (equilibrium) Potts model and for two irreversible models whose dynamic rules are invariant under the symmetry operations of the point group C3v. By means of extensive numerical analysis of the phase transition we show that irreversibility does not affect the critical behavior of the systems. In particular we find that the Binder reduced fourth order cumulant takes a universal value U* which is the same for the three state Potts model and for the irreversible models. The same universal behavior is observed for the reduced third-order cumulant.

Glassy behaviour in short range lattice models without quenched disorder

We investigate the quenching process in lattice systems with short range interaction and several crystalline states as ground states. We consider in particular the following systems on square lattice: - hard particle (exclusion) model; - q states planar Potts model. The system is initially in a homogeneous disordered phase and relaxes toward a new equilibrium state as soon as the temperature is rapidly lowered. The time evolution can be described numerically by a stochastic process such as the Metropolis algorithm. The number of pure, equivalent, ground states is q for the Potts model and r for the hard particle model, and it is known that for r or q larger or equal to d+1, the final equilibrium state may be polycrystalline, i.e. not made of a uniform phase. We find that in addition n_g and q_g exist such that for r > r_g, or q > q_g the system evolves toward a glassy state, i.e. a state in which the ratio of the interaction energy among the different crystalline phases to the total energy of the system never vanishes; moreover we find indications that r_g=q_g. We infer that q=q_g (and r=r_g) corresponds to the crossing from second order to discontinuous transition in the phase diagram of the system.
