Exact $G_2$-structures on unimodular Lie algebras

We consider seven-dimensional unimodular Lie algebras $\mathfrak{g}$ admitting exact $G_2$-structures, focusing our attention on those with vanishing third Betti number $b_3(\mathfrak{g})$. We discuss some examples, both in the case when $b_2(\mathfrak{g})\neq0$, and in the case when the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ is (2,3)-trivial, i.e., when both $b_2(\mathfrak{g})$ and $b_3(\mathfrak{g})$ vanish. These examples are solvable, as $b_3(\mathfrak{g})=0$, but they are not strongly unimodular, a necessary condition for the existence of lattices on the simply connected Lie group corresponding to $\mathfrak{g}$. More generally, we prove that any seven-dimensional (2,3)-trivial strongly unimodular Lie algebra does not admit any exact $G_2$-structure. From this, it follows that there are no compact examples of the form $(Γ\backslash G,φ)$, where $G$ is a seven-dimensional simply connected Lie group with (2,3)-trivial Lie algebra, $Γ\subset G$ is a co-compact discrete subgroup, and $φ$ is an exact $G_2$-structure on $Γ\backslash G$ induced by a left-invariant one on $G$.

Closed G$_2$-structures on non-solvable Lie groups

We investigate the existence of left-invariant closed G$_2$-structures on seven-dimensional non-solvable Lie groups, providing the first examples of this type. When the Lie algebra has trivial Levi decomposition, we show that such a structure exists only when the semisimple part is isomorphic to $\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{R})$ and the radical is unimodular and centerless. Moreover, we classify unimodular Lie algebras with non-trivial Levi decomposition admitting closed G$_2$-structures.

Special types of locally conformal closed G$_2$-structures

Motivated by analogous results in locally conformal symplectic geometry, we study different classes of G$_2$-structures defined by a locally conformal closed 3-form. In particular, we give a complete characterization of invariant exact locally conformal closed G$_2$-structures on simply connected Lie groups, and we present examples of compact manifolds with different types of locally conformal closed G$_2$-structures.

On $G_2$-structures, special metrics and related flows

We review results about $G_2$-structures in relation to the existence of special metrics, such as Einstein metrics and Ricci solitons, and the evolution under the Laplacian flow on non-compact homogeneous spaces. We also discuss some examples in detail.

Convexity theorems for the gradient map on probability measures

Given a Kähler manifold $(Z,J,ω)$ and a compact real submanifold $M\subset Z$, we study the properties of the gradient map associated with the action of a noncompact real reductive Lie group ${\rm G}$ on the space of probability measures on $M.$ In particular, we prove convexity results for such map when ${\rm G}$ is Abelian and we investigate how to extend them to the non-Abelian case.

Closed warped G$_2$-structures evolving under the Laplacian flow

We study the behaviour of the Laplacian flow evolving closed G$_2$-structures on warped products of the form $M^6\times{\mathbb S}^1$, where the base $M^6$ is a compact 6-manifold endowed with an SU(3)-structure. In the general case, we reinterpret the flow as a set of evolution equations on $M^6$ for the differential forms defining the SU(3)-structure and the warping function. When the latter is constant, we find sufficient conditions for the existence of solutions of the corresponding coupled flow. This provides a method to construct immortal solutions of the Laplacian flow on the product manifolds $M^6\times{\mathbb S}^1$. The application of our results to explicit cases allows us to obtain new examples of expanding Laplacian solitons.

On the automorphism group of a symplectic half-flat 6-manifold

We prove that the automorphism group of a compact 6-manifold $M$ endowed with a symplectic half-flat SU(3)-structure has abelian Lie algebra with dimension bounded by min$\{5,b_1(M)\}$. Moreover, we study the properties of the automorphism group action and we discuss relevant examples. In particular, we provide new complete examples on $T\mathbb{S}^3$ which are invariant under a cohomogeneity one action of SO(4).

On the automorphism group of a closed G$_2$-structure

We study the automorphism group of a compact 7-manifold $M$ endowed with a closed non-parallel G$_2$-structure, showing that its identity component is abelian with dimension bounded by min$\{6,b_2(M)\}$. This implies the non-existence of compact homogeneous manifolds endowed with an invariant closed non-parallel G$_2$-structure. We also discuss some relevant examples.

Homogeneous symplectic half-flat 6-manifolds

We consider 6-manifolds endowed with a symplectic half-flat SU(3)-structure and acted on by a transitive Lie group G of automorphisms. We review a classical result allowing to show the non-existence of compact non-flat examples. In the noncompact setting, we classify such manifolds under the assumption that G is semisimple. Moreover, in each case we describe all invariant symplectic half-flat SU(3)-structures up to isomorphism, showing that the Ricci tensor is always Hermitian with respect to the induced almost complex structure. This last condition is characterized in the general case.

Locally conformal calibrated $G_2$-manifolds

We study conditions for which the mapping torus of a 6-manifold endowed with an $SU(3)$-structure is a locally conformal calibrated $G_2$-manifold, that is, a 7-manifold endowed with a $G_2$-structure $φ$ such that $d φ= - θ\wedge φ$ for a closed non-vanishing 1-form $θ$. Moreover, we show that if $(M, φ)$ is a compact locally conformal calibrated $G_2$-manifold with $\mathcal{L}_{θ^{\#}} φ=0$, where ${θ^{\#}}$ is the dual of $θ$ with respect to the Riemannian metric $g_φ$ induced by $φ$, then $M$ is a fiber bundle over $S^1$ with a coupled $SU(3)$-manifold as fiber.

Coupled SU(3)-structures and Supersymmetry

We review coupled ${\rm SU}(3)$-structures, also known in the literature as restricted half-flat structures, in relation to supersymmetry. In particular, we study special classes of examples admitting such structures and the behaviour of flows of ${\rm SU}(3)$-structures with respect to the coupled condition.

Einstein locally conformal calibrated $G_2$-structures

We study locally conformal calibrated $G_2$-structures whose underlying Riemannian metric is Einstein, showing that in the compact case the scalar curvature cannot be positive. As a consequence, a compact homogeneous $7$-manifold cannot admit an invariant Einstein locally conformal calibrated $G_2$-structure unless the underlying metric is flat. In contrast to the compact case, we provide a non-compact example of homogeneous manifold endowed with a locally conformal calibrated $G_2$-structure whose associated Riemannian metric is Einstein and non Ricci-flat. The homogeneous Einstein metric is a rank-one extension of a Ricci soliton on the $3$-dimensional complex Heisenberg group endowed with a left-invariant coupled ${\rm SU}(3)$-structure $(ω, Ψ)$, i.e., such that $d ω= c {\rm Re}(Ψ)$, with $c \in \mathbb{R} - \{ 0 \}$. Nilpotent Lie algebras admitting a coupled ${\rm SU}(3)$-structure are also classified.

Half-flat structures inducing Einstein metrics on homogeneous spaces

In this paper, we consider half-flat $SU(3)$-structures and the subclasses of coupled and double structures. In the general case we show that the intrinsic torsion form $w_1^-$ is constant in each of the two subclasses. We then consider the problem of finding half-flat structures inducing Einstein metrics on homogeneous spaces. We give an example of a left invariant half-flat (non coupled and non double) structure inducing an Einstein metric on $S^3\times S^3$ and we show there does not exist any left invariant coupled structure inducing an ${\rm Ad}(S^1)$-invariant Einstein metric on it. Finally, we show that there are no coupled structures inducing the Einstein metric on Einstein solvmanifolds and on homogeneous Einstein manifolds of nonpositive sectional curvature.
