Freezing Transition in Decaying Burgers Turbulence and Random Matrix Dualities

We reveal a phase transition with decreasing viscosity $ν$ at ν=ν_c>0 in one-dimensional decaying Burgers turbulence with a power-law correlated random profile of Gaussian-distributed initial velocities \sim|x-x'|^{-2}. The low-viscosity phase exhibits non-Gaussian one-point probability density of velocities, continuously dependent on ν, reflecting a spontaneous one step replica symmetry breaking (RSB) in the associated statistical mechanics problem. We obtain the low orders cumulants analytically. Our results, which are checked numerically, are based on combining insights in the mechanism of the freezing transition in random logarithmic potentials with an extension of duality relations discovered recently in Random Matrix Theory. They are essentially non mean-field in nature as also demonstrated by the shock size distribution computed numerically and different from the short range correlated Kida model, itself well described by a mean field one step RSB ansatz. We also provide some insights for the finite viscosity behaviour of velocities in the latter model.

Maximum of N Independent Brownian Walkers till the First Exit From the Half Space

We consider the one-dimensional target search process that involves an immobile target located at the origin and $N$ searchers performing independent Brownian motions starting at the initial positions $\vec x = (x_1,x_2,..., x_N)$ all on the positive half space. The process stops when the target is first found by one of the searchers. We compute the probability distribution of the maximum distance $m$ visited by the searchers till the stopping time and show that it has a power law tail: $P_N(m|\vec x)\sim B_N (x_1x_2... x_N)/m^{N+1}$ for large $m$. Thus all moments of $m$ up to the order $(N-1)$ are finite, while the higher moments diverge. The prefactor $B_N$ increases with $N$ faster than exponentially. Our solution gives the exit probability of a set of $N$ particles from a box $[0,L]$ through the left boundary. Incidentally, it also provides an exact solution of the Laplace's equation in an $N$-dimensional hypercube with some prescribed boundary conditions. The analytical results are in excellent agreement with Monte Carlo simulations.

The universal high temperature regime of pinned elastic objects

We study the high temperature regime within the glass phase of an elastic object with short ranged disorder. In that regime we argue that the scaling functions of any observable are described by a continuum model with a $δ$-correlated disorder and that they are universal up to only two parameters that can be explicitly computed. This is shown numerically on the roughness of directed polymer models and by dimensional and functional renormalization group arguments. We discuss experimental consequences such as non-monotonous behaviour with temperature.

Free-energy distribution of the directed polymer at high temperature

We study the directed polymer of length $t$ in a random potential with fixed endpoints in dimension 1+1 in the continuum and on the square lattice, by analytical and numerical methods. The universal regime of high temperature $T$ is described, upon scaling 'time' $t \sim T^5/κ$ and space $x = T^3/κ$ (with $κ=T$ for the discrete model) by a continuum model with $δ$-function disorder correlation. Using the Bethe Ansatz solution for the attractive boson problem, we obtain all positive integer moments of the partition function. The lowest cumulants of the free energy are predicted at small time and found in agreement with numerics. We then obtain the exact expression at any time for the generating function of the free energy distribution, in terms of a Fredholm determinant. At large time we find that it crosses over to the Tracy Widom distribution (TW) which describes the fixed $T$ infinite $t$ limit. The exact free energy distribution is obtained for any time and compared with very recent results on growth and exclusion models.

Hitting probability for anomalous diffusion processes

We present the universal features of the hitting probability $Q(x,L)$, the probability that a generic stochastic process starting at $x$ and evolving in a box $[0,L]$ hits the upper boundary $L$ before hitting the lower boundary at 0. For a generic self-affine process (describing, for instance, the polymer translocation through a nanopore) we show that $Q(x,L)=Q(x/L)$ and the scaling function $Q(z)\sim z^ϕ$ as $z\to 0$ with $ϕ=θ/H$ where $H$ and $θ$ are respectively the Hurst exponent and the persistence exponent of the process. This result is verified in several exact calculations including when the process represents the position of a particle diffusing in a disordered potential. We also provide numerical supports for our analytical results.

The longest excursion of fractional Brownian motion : numerical evidence of non-Markovian effects

We study, using exact numerical simulations, the statistics of the longest excursion l_{\max}(t) up to time t for the fractional Brownian motion with Hurst exponent 0 \propto Q_\infty t where Q_\infty \equiv Q_\infty(H) depends continuously on H, and in a non trivial way. These results are compared with exact analytical results obtained recently for a renewal process with an associated persistence exponent θ= 1-H. This comparison shows that Q_\infty(H) carries the clear signature of non-Markovian effects for H\neq 1/2. The pre-asymptotic behavior of < l_{\max}(t)> is also discussed.

Statistical Mechanics of Logarithmic REM: Duality, Freezing and Extreme Value Statistics of $1/f$ Noises generated by Gaussian Free Fields

We compute the distribution of the partition functions for a class of one-dimensional Random Energy Models (REM) with logarithmically correlated random potential, above and at the glass transition temperature. The random potential sequences represent various versions of the 1/f noise generated by sampling the two-dimensional Gaussian Free Field (2dGFF) along various planar curves. Our method extends the recent analysis of Fyodorov Bouchaud from the circular case to an interval and is based on an analytical continuation of the Selberg integral. In particular, we unveil a {\it duality relation} satisfied by the suitable generating function of free energy cumulants in the high-temperature phase. It reinforces the freezing scenario hypothesis for that generating function, from which we derive the distribution of extrema for the 2dGFF on the $[0,1]$ interval. We provide numerical checks of the circular and the interval case and discuss universality and various extensions. Relevance to the distribution of length of a segment in Liouville quantum gravity is noted.

Avalanche-size distribution at the depinning transition: A numerical test of the theory

We calculate numerically the sizes S of jumps (avalanches) between successively pinned configurations of an elastic line (d=1) or interface (d=2), pulled by a spring of (small) strength m^2 in a random-field landscape. We obtain strong evidence that the size distribution, away from the small-scale cutoff, takes the form P(S) = p(S/S_m) /S_m^2, where S_m:= /(2 ), proportional to m^(-d-zeta), is the scale of avalanches, and zeta the roughness exponent at the depinning transition. Measurement of the scaling function f(s) := s^tau p(s) is compared with the predictions from a recent Functional RG (FRG) calculation, both at mean-field and one-loop level. The avalanche-size exponent tau is found in good agreement with the conjecture tau = 2- 2/(d+zeta), recently confirmed to one loop via the FRG. The function f(s) exhibits a shoulder and a stretched exponential decay at large s, with ln f(s) proportional to - s^delta, and delta approximately 7/6 in d=1. The function f(s), universal ratios of moments, and the generating function are found in excellent agreement with the one-loop FRG predictions. The distribution of local avalanche sizes, i.e. of the jumps of a subspace of the manifold of dimension d', is also computed and compared to our FRG predictions, and to the conjecture tau' =2- 2/(d'+zeta).

Asymptotic behavior of self-affine processes in semi-infinite domains

We propose to model the stochastic dynamics of a polymer passing through a pore (translocation) by means of a fractional Brownian motion, and study its behavior in presence of an absorbing boundary. Based on scaling arguments and numerical simulations, we present a conjecture that provides a link between the persistence exponent $θ$ and the Hurst exponent $H$ of the process, thus sheding light on the spatial and temporal features of translocation. Furthermore, we show that this conjecture applies more generally to a broad class of self affine processes undergoing anomalous diffusion in bounded domains, and we discuss some significant examples.

Creep dynamics of elastic manifolds via exact transition pathways

We study the steady state of driven elastic strings in disordered media below the depinning threshold. In the low-temperature limit, for a fixed sample, the steady state is dominated by a single configuration, which we determine exactly from the transition pathways between metastable states. We obtain the dynamical phase diagram in this limit. At variance with a thermodynamic phase transition, the depinning transition is not associated with a divergent length scale of the steady state below threshold, but only of the transient dynamics. We discuss the distribution of barrier heights, and check the validity of the dynamic phase diagram at small but finite temperatures using Langevin simulations. The phase diagram continues to hold for broken statistical tilt symmetry. We point out the relevance of our results for experiments of creep motion in elastic interfaces.

On the path integral representation for quantum spin models and its application to the quantum cavity method and to Monte Carlo simulations

The cavity method is a well established technique for solving classical spin models on sparse random graphs (mean-field models with finite connectivity). Laumann et al. [arXiv:0706.4391] proposed recently an extension of this method to quantum spin-1/2 models in a transverse field, using a discretized Suzuki-Trotter imaginary time formalism. Here we show how to take analytically the continuous imaginary time limit. Our main technical contribution is an explicit procedure to generate the spin trajectories in a path integral representation of the imaginary time dynamics. As a side result we also show how this procedure can be used in simple heat-bath like Monte Carlo simulations of generic quantum spin models. The replica symmetric continuous time quantum cavity method is formulated for a wide class of models, and applied as a simple example on the Bethe lattice ferromagnet in a transverse field. The results of the methods are confronted with various approximation schemes in this particular case. On this system we performed quantum Monte Carlo simulations that confirm the exactness of the cavity method in the thermodynamic limit.

Universal width distributions in non-Markovian Gaussian processes

We study the influence of boundary conditions on self-affine random functions u(t) in the interval t/L \in [0,1], with independent Gaussian Fourier modes of variance ~ 1/q^α. We consider the probability distribution of the mean square width of u(t) taken over the whole interval or in a window t/L \in [x, x+δ]. Its characteristic function can be expressed in terms of the spectrum of an infinite matrix. This distribution strongly depends on the boundary conditions of u(t) for finite δ, but we show that it is universal (independent of boundary conditions) in the small-window limit. We compute it directly for all values of α, using, for α<3, an asymptotic expansion formula that we derive. For α> 3, the limiting width distribution is independent of α. It corresponds to an infinite matrix with a single non-zero eigenvalue. We give the exact expression for the width distribution in this case. Our analysis facilitates the estimation of the roughness exponent from experimental data, in cases where the standard extrapolation method cannot be used

Numerical Calculation of the Functional renormalization group fixed-point functions at the depinning transition

We compute numerically the sequence of successive pinned configurations of an elastic line pulled quasi-statically by a spring in a random bond (RB) and random field (RF) potential. Measuring the fluctuations of the center of mass of the line allows to obtain the functional renormalization group (FRG) functions at the depinning transition. The universal form of the second cumulant Delta(u) is found to have a linear cusp at the origin, to be identical for RB and RF, different from the statics, and in good agreement with 2-loop FRG. The cusp is due to avalanches, which we visualize. Avalanches also produce a cusp in the third cumulant, whose universal form is obtained, as predicted by FRG.

Short time relaxation of a driven elastic string in a random medium

We study numerically the relaxation of a driven elastic string in a two dimensional pinning landscape. The relaxation of the string, initially flat, is governed by a growing length $L(t)$ separating the short steady-state equilibrated lengthscales, from the large lengthscales that keep memory of the initial condition. We find a macroscopic short time regime where relaxation is universal, both above and below the depinning threshold, different from the one expected for standard critical phenomena. Below the threshold, the zero temperature relaxation towards the first pinned configuration provides a novel, experimentally convenient way to access all the critical exponents of the depinning transition independently.

Dynamics below the depinning threshold

We study the steady-state low-temperature dynamics of an elastic line in a disordered medium below the depinning threshold. Analogously to the equilibrium dynamics, in the limit T->0, the steady state is dominated by a single configuration which is occupied with probability one. We develop an exact algorithm to target this dominant configuration and to analyze its geometrical properties as a function of the driving force. The roughness exponent of the line at large scales is identical to the one at depinning. No length scale diverges in the steady state regime as the depinning threshold is approached from below. We do find, a divergent length, but it is associated only with the transient relaxation between metastable states.

Coulombian disorder in Charge Density Waves

When unscreened charged impurities are introduced in charge density wave system the long wavelength component of the disorder is long ranged and dominates static correlation functions. We calculate the x-ray intensity and find that it is identical to the one produced by thermal fluctuations in a disorder-free smectic-A. We suggest that this effect could be observed in the blue bronze material K$_{0.3}$MoO$_3$ doped with charged impurities such as Vanadium.

Non-equilibrium relaxation of an elastic string in a random potential

We study the non--equilibrium motion of an elastic string in a two dimensional pinning landscape using Langevin dynamics simulations. The relaxation of a line, initially flat, is characterized by a growing length, $L(t)$, separating the equilibrated short length scales from the flat long distance geometry that keep memory of the initial condition. We show that, in the long time limit, $L(t)$ has a non--algebraic growth with a universal distribution function. The distribution function of waiting times is also calculated, and related to the previous distribution. The barrier distribution is narrow enough to justify arguments based on scaling of the typical barrier.

Variant Monte Carlo algorithm for driven elastic strings in random media

We discuss the non-local Variant Monte Carlo algorithm which has been successfully employed in the study of driven elastic strings in disordered media at the depinning threshold. Here we prove two theorems, which establish that the algorithm satisfies the crucial no-passing rule and that, after some initial time, the string exclusively moves forward. The Variant Monte Carlo algorithm overcomes the shortcomings of local methods, as we show by analyzing the depinning threshold of a single-pin problem.
