Supercooling in Radiative Symmetry Breaking: Theory Extensions, Gravitational Wave Detection and Primordial Black Holes

First-order phase transitions, which take place when the symmetries are predominantly broken (and masses are then generated) through radiative corrections, produce observable gravitational waves and primordial black holes. We provide a model-independent approach that is valid for large-enough supercooling to quantitatively describe these phenomena in terms of few parameters, which are computable once the model is specified. The validity of a previously-proposed approach of this sort is extended here to a larger class of theories. Among other things, we identify regions of the parameter space that correspond to the background of gravitational waves recently detected by pulsar timing arrays (NANOGrav, CPTA, EPTA, PPTA) and others that are either excluded by the observing runs of LIGO and Virgo or within the reach of future gravitational wave detectors. Furthermore, we find regions of the parameter space where primordial black holes produced by large over-densities due to such phase transitions can account for dark matter. Finally, it is shown how this model-independent approach can be applied to specific cases, including a phenomenological completion of the Standard Model with right-handed neutrinos and gauged $B-L$ undergoing radiative symmetry breaking.

(Multi-field) Natural Inflation and Gravitational Waves

We provide a detailed study of natural inflation with a periodic non-minimal coupling, which is a well-motivated inflationary model that admits an explicit UV completion. We demonstrate that this construction can satisfy the most recent observational constraints from Planck and the BICEP/Keck collaborations. We also compute the corresponding relic gravitational wave background due to tensor perturbations and show that future space-borne interferometers, such as DECIGO, BBO and ALIA, may be able to detect it. Next, we extend this analysis and establish the validity of these results in a multi-field model featuring an additional $R^2$ term in the action, which allows us to interpolate between natural and scalaron (a.k.a.~Starobinsky) inflation. We investigate the conditions under which the aforementioned future interferometers will have the capability to differentiate between pure natural inflation and natural-scalaron inflation. The latter analysis could open the door to distinguishing between single-field and multi-field inflation through gravitational wave observations in more general contexts.

Inflation and Reheating through an Independent Affine Connection

This paper is based on a talk in which I discussed how a component of the dynamical affine connection, that is independent of the metric, can drive inflation in agreement with observations. This provides a geometrical origin for the inflaton. I also illustrated how the decays of this field, which has spin 0 and odd parity, into Higgs bosons can reheat the universe to a sufficiently high temperature.

Thermal Production of Massless Dark Photons

A dark photon is predicted by several well-motivated Standard Model extensions and UV completions. Here the most general effective field theory up to dimension-six operators describing the interactions of a massless dark photon with all Standard Model particles is considered. This captures the predictions of a generic model featuring this type of vector boson at sufficiently low energies. In such framework the thermal production rate of dark photons is computed at leading order, including the contributions of all SM particles. The corresponding cosmological yield of the dark photon and its contribution to the effective number of neutrinos are also calculated. These predictions satisfy the current observational bounds and will be tested by future measurements.

Model-Independent Radiative Symmetry Breaking and Gravitational Waves

Models where symmetries are predominantly broken (and masses are then generated) through radiative corrections typically produce strong first-order phase transitions with a period of supercooling, when the temperature dropped by several orders of magnitude. Here it is shown that a model-independent description of these phenomena and the consequent production of potentially observable gravitational waves is possible in terms of few parameters (which are computable once the model is specified) if enough supercooling occurred. It is explicitly found how large the supercooling should be in terms of those parameters, in order for the model-independent description to be valid. It is also explained how to systematically improve the accuracy of such description by computing higher-order corrections in an expansion in powers of a small quantity, which is a function of the above-mentioned parameters. Furthermore, the corresponding gravitational wave spectrum is compared with the existing experimental results from the latest observing run of LIGO and VIRGO and the expected sensitivities of future gravitational wave experiments to find regions of the parameter space that are either ruled out or can lead to a future detection.

Inflating and Reheating the Universe with an Independent Affine Connection

It is shown that a component of the dynamical affine connection, which is independent of the metric, can drive inflation in agreement with observations. This provides a geometrical origin for the inflaton. It is also found that the decays of this field, which has spin 0 and odd parity, into Higgs bosons can reheat the universe up to a sufficiently high temperature.

(In)equivalence of Metric-Affine and Metric Effective Field Theories

In a geometrical approach to gravity the metric and the (gravitational) connection can be independent and one deals with metric-affine theories. We construct the most general action of metric-affine effective field theories, including a generic matter sector, where the connection does not carry additional dynamical fields. Among other things, this helps in identifying the complement set of effective field theories where there are other dynamical fields, which can have an interesting phenomenology. Within the latter set, we study in detail a vast class where the Holst invariant (the contraction of the curvature with the Levi-Civita antisymmetric tensor) is a dynamical pseudoscalar. In the Einstein-Cartan case (where the connection is metric compatible and fermions can be introduced) we also comment on the possible phenomenological role of dynamical dark photons from torsion and compute interactions of the above-mentioned pseudoscalar with a generic matter sector and the metric. Finally, we show that in an arbitrary realistic metric-affine theory featuring a generic matter sector the equivalence principle always emerges at low energies without the need to postulate it.

BICEP/Keck data and Quadratic Gravity

The recent results of the BICEP and Keck collaborations have put stringent bounds on many inflationary models, including some well-motivated ones. This is certainly the case when gravity remains described by Einstein's theory up to the inflationary scale, but can be avoided by introducing quadratic-in-curvature terms that are effective at that scale. Recently it has also been shown that these terms can UV complete gravity respecting stability and unitarity. Here the predictions of such quadratic gravity are computed and compared with the BICEP/Keck constraints by focusing on some of the inflationary scenarios that are best-motivated from the particle physics point of view and are already ruled out in Einstein gravity: (critical) Higgs inflation and natural inflation. The first scenario can be considered as the most economical option as the inflaton is identified with the only known elementary scalar field in the Standard Model and the near criticality of the Standard Model is used to remain in the perturbative regime. In the second one a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson contributes to the inflationary dynamics and its potential is naturally flat. It is shown that in both scenarios one can restore the agreement with the observational constraints in quadratic gravity.

Natural-Scalaron Inflation

A pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson (such as an axion-like particle) is a theoretically well-motivated inflaton as it features a naturally flat potential (natural inflation). This is because Goldstone's theorem protects its potential from sizable quantum corrections. Such corrections, however, generically generates an $R^2$ term in the action, which leads to another inflaton candidate because of the equivalence between the $R^2$ term and a scalar field, the scalaron, with a quasi flat potential (Starobinsky inflation). Here it is investigated a new multifield scenario in which both the scalaron and a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson are active (natural-scalaron inflation). For generality, also a non-minimal coupling is included, which is shown to emerge from microscopic theories. It is demonstrated that a robust inflationary attractor is present even when the masses of the two inflatons are comparable. Moreover, the presence of the scalaron allows to satisfy all observational bounds in a large region of the parameter space, unlike what happens in pure-natural inflation.

Axion-Sterile-Neutrino Dark Matter

Extending the Standard Model with three right-handed neutrinos and a simple QCD axion sector can account for neutrino oscillations, dark matter and baryon asymmetry; at the same time, it solves the strong CP problem, stabilizes the electroweak vacuum and can implement critical Higgs inflation (satisfying all current observational bounds). We perform here a general analysis of dark matter (DM) in such a model, which we call the $aν$MSM. Although critical Higgs inflation features a (quasi) inflection point of the inflaton potential we show that DM cannot receive a contribution from primordial black holes in the $aν$MSM. This leads to a multicomponent axion-sterile-neutrino DM and allows us to relate the axion parameters, such as the axion decay constant, to the neutrino parameters. We include several DM production mechanisms: the axion production via misalignment and decay of topological defects as well as the sterile-neutrino production through the resonant and non-resonant mechanisms and in the recently proposed CPT-symmetric universe.

Hearing Higgs with Gravitational Wave Detectors

The relic gravitational wave background due to tensor linear perturbations generated during Higgs inflation is computed. Both the Standard Model and a well-motivated phenomenological completion (that accounts for all the experimentally confirmed evidence of new physics) are considered. We focus on critical Higgs inflation, which improves on the non-critical version and features an amplification of the tensor fluctuations. The latter property allows us to establish that future space-borne interferometers, such as DECIGO, BBO and ALIA, may detect the corresponding primordial gravitational waves.

Dimensional Transmutation in Gravity and Cosmology

We review (and extend) the analysis of general theories of all interactions (gravity included) where the mass scales are due to dimensional transmutation. Quantum consistency requires the presence of terms in the action with four derivatives of the metric. It is shown, nevertheless, how unitary is achieved and the classical Ostrogradsky instabilities can be avoided. The four-derivative terms also allow us to have a UV complete framework and a naturally small ratio between the Higgs mass and the Planck scale. Moreover, black holes of Einstein gravity with horizons smaller than a certain (microscopic) scale are replaced by horizonless ultracompact objects that are free from any singularity and have interesting phenomenological applications. We also discuss the predictions that can be compared with observations of the microwave background radiation anisotropies and find that this scenario is viable and can be tested with future data. Finally, how strong phase transitions can emerge in models of this type with approximate scale symmetry and how to test them with GW detectors is reviewed and explained.

Gravitational Waves from Fundamental Axion Dynamics

A totally asymptotically free QCD axion model, where all couplings flow to zero in the infinite energy limit, was recently formulated. A very interesting feature of this fundamental theory is the ability to predict some low-energy observables, like the masses of the extra fermions and scalars. Here we find and investigate a region of the parameter space where the Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry is broken quantum mechanically through the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism. This results in an even more predictive framework: the axion sector features only two independent parameters (the PQ symmetry breaking scale and the QCD gauge coupling). In particular, we show that the PQ phase transition is strongly first order and can produce gravitational waves within the reach of future detectors. The predictivity of the model leads to a rigid dependence of the phase transition (like its duration and the nucleation temperature) and the gravitational wave spectrum on the PQ symmetry breaking scale and the QCD gauge coupling.

A Fundamental QCD Axion Model

We construct and study a fundamental field theory of the QCD axion: all couplings flow to zero in the infinite-energy limit realizing the totally asymptotically free (TAF) scenario. Some observable quantities (such as the masses of new quarks and scalars) are predicted at low energies by the TAF requirement in terms of gauge couplings and a vector-boson mass. Here the minimal model of this sort is explored; the axion sector is charged under an SU(2) gauge group and a dark photon appears at low energies. This model can be TAF and feature an absolutely stable vacuum at the same time.

Horizonless ultracompact objects and dark matter in quadratic gravity

We show that in quadratic gravity sufficiently light objects must be horizonless and construct explicit analytic examples of horizonless ultracompact objects (UCOs), which are more compact than Schwarzschild black holes. Due to the quadratic terms, gravity becomes soft and eventually vanishes in the high-energy limit leading to a "linearization mechanism": light objects can be described by the linearized theory when their Schwarzschild radius is smaller than the Compton wavelength of the new gravitational degrees of freedom. As a result, we can analytically describe UCOs with a mass-to-radius ratio higher than for a Schwarzschild black hole. The corresponding spacetime is regular everywhere. We show that the Ostrogradsky instabilities can be avoided and discuss the relation with the Higgs vacuum metastability. Due to the lack of a horizon, light UCOs do not evaporate. Therefore, they may play the role of dark matter. We briefly discuss their phenomenology.

Quasi-Conformal Models and the Early Universe

Extensions of the Standard Model and general relativity featuring a UV fixed point can leave observable implications at accessible energies. Although mass parameters such as the Planck scale can appear through dimensional transmutation, all fundamental dimension-4 operators can (at least approximately) respect Weyl invariance at finite energy. An example is the Weyl-squared term, whose consistency and observational consequences are studied. This quasi-conformal scenario emerges from the UV complete quadratic gravity and is a possible framework for inflation. We find two realizations. In the first one the inflaton is a fundamental scalar with a quasi-conformal non-minimal coupling to the Ricci scalar. In this case the field excursion must not exceed the Planck mass by far. An example discussed in detail is hilltop inflation. In the second realization the inflaton is a pseudo-Goldstone boson (natural inflation). In this case we show how to obtain an elegant UV completion within an asymptotically free QCD-like theory, in which the inflaton is a composite scalar due to new strong dynamics. We also show how efficient reheating can occur. Unlike the natural inflation based on Einstein gravity, the tensor-to-scalar ratio is well below the current bound set by Planck. In both realizations mentioned above, the basic inflationary formulae are computed analytically and, therefore, these possibilities can be used as simple benchmark models.

Metastability in Quadratic Gravity

Quadratic gravity is a UV completion of general relativity, which also solves the hierarchy problem. The presence of 4 derivatives implies via the Ostrogradsky theorem that the $classical$ Hamiltonian is unbounded from below. Here we solve this issue by showing that the relevant solutions are not unstable but metastable. When the energies are much below a threshold (that is high enough to describe the whole cosmology) runaways are avoided. Remarkably, the chaotic inflation theory of initial conditions ensures that such bound is satisfied and we work out testable implications for the early universe. The possible instability occurring when the bound is violated not only is compatible with cosmology but would also explain why we live in a homogeneous and isotropic universe.

Critical Higgs inflation in a Viable Motivated Model

An extension of the Standard Model with three right-handed neutrinos and a simple invisible axion model can account for all experimentally confirmed signals of new physics (neutrino oscillations, dark matter and baryon asymmetry) in addition to solving the strong CP problem, stabilizing the electroweak vacuum and satisfying all current observational bounds. We show that this model can also implement critical Higgs inflation, which corresponds to the frontier between stability and metastability of the electroweak vacuum. This leads to a value of the non-minimal coupling between the Higgs and the Ricci scalar that is much lower than the one usually quoted in Higgs inflation away from criticality. Then, an advantage is that the scale of perturbative unitarity breaking on flat spacetime can be very close to the Planck mass, where anyhow new physics is required. The higher dimensional operators are under control in this inflationary setup. The dependence of the cutoff on the Higgs background is also taken into account as appropriate when the Higgs is identified with the inflaton. Furthermore, critical Higgs inflation enjoys a robust inflationary attractor that makes it an appealing setup for the early universe. In the proposed model, unlike in the Standard Model, critical Higgs inflation can be realized without any tension with the observed quantities, such as the top mass and the strong coupling.
